It's awful because it's in a shared parking lot and it's a nightmare to find a spot. For some strange reason, the whole town of Oak Lawn decided to go to that shopping area where Baba Saj is, on a Wednesday night close to 8 pm. Let that sink in. Just a warning, people here can't drive or walk, I wouldn't be surprised if accidents occur here weekly. Aside from that, they have plenty of parking spaces when available. Baba Saj wasn't busy at all. The restaurant is beautiful. I love the interior and I like that they have a patio area to eat in front of the fountain. We ordered a mixed shawarma meal, steak shawarma bowl, and a sfeha flatbread. The staff here is nice. I forgot the name of the older woman but she gave us an extra bowl for free. They gave us a chicken shawarma bowl instead of steak. They didn't want to take the chicken shawarma bowl back so they just put it in a bag and gave it to us. Prices aren't bad. -mixed shawarma meal 4.5 - the mixed meat (steak and chicken) were both very moist and tender. A lot better than Haifa in Orland Park. The fries weren't bad but I would have preferred them to be crispy. These leaned more on the soggy side like McDonald's. I gave it a 4.5 because I wished the shawarma portion was bigger. -steak shawarma bowl 3 - I told my gf this but stop getting bowls. If you want to really experience the shawarma, always get it in a flatbread or pita. Never in a bowl. The meat loses moisture in the open air thus making it taste dry. -sfeha flatbread 4.5 - this was pretty tasty. The meat is moist but the bread on the outside can get slightly dry.

The place is very busy so parking can be a bit hard to find but they do have an overflow lot. Inside, they have a seating area where you can wait until you're seated at a table. Both times I've been there the wait time was around 20-30 minutes but trust me, the food is worth the wait. Even though they were busy, our server was attentive and the food didn't take too long to come out. I went with a group and for our appetizer we tried the platter that comes with hummus, baba ganoush, grape leaves, and fresh pita bread. For my drink, I had the lemon mint smoothie...very refreshing. The plates that my husband and I got were the chicken shawarma sandwich with a salad and the filet plate that comes with rice as well as grilled tomato and grilled onion. They give you generous portions which made it possible for me to share some of my meal with someone in my group to try and I still had leftovers. Finally, we could not leave without having dessert. We had knafeh which is made fresh. Everything was amazing and I can't wait to come back next time I visit the Chicagoland area.

Fun concept, generous portions, but this is not Mexican food…read more I tried Holy Peno because it advertises itself as a "Halal Mexican Grill," and unfortunately, that description is what disappointed me the most. In my opinion, this is not Mexican food. The food may have the appearance and presentation of Mexican dishes, but the flavors, seasoning, spices, and preparation of the meat are much more reminiscent of Middle Eastern cuisine. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Middle Eastern food -- but if you're specifically looking for Mexican food, you should know that you are not getting that here. The flavors simply aren't there. The meat wasn't prepared or seasoned in the way I would expect from Mexican cooking, and overall the food tasted more like Middle Eastern food presented in a Mexican-inspired format. It was also a little salty. Because the restaurant specifically uses the phrase "Halal Mexican Grill," I found the labeling frustrating. As someone who was expecting Mexican food, I felt misled by the description. In my opinion, calling this Mexican food does a disservice to what Mexican cuisine actually is. If you're craving authentic Mexican flavors, I'd recommend driving a little farther and going somewhere that specializes in actual Mexican cooking. I also tried the hibiscus agua fresca, and unfortunately, that was a complete miss. It had an extremely strong chemical smell and taste that reminded me of nail polish. I'm not exaggerating -- that was genuinely the first thing that came to mind. I couldn't finish it, and it didn't resemble the hibiscus water I'm accustomed to in either flavor or appearance. That said, there are definitely positives. The portions are very generous for the price, the customer service was good, and the overall branding and presentation are fun and kitschy. If you're simply hungry and looking for an inexpensive meal with a substantial portion, you may enjoy it. But if you're going specifically because you're craving Mexican food, don't. You are getting something very different. Bottom line: Good portions, reasonable prices, and friendly service. But despite the "Halal Mexican Grill" branding, I would not consider this Mexican food. If that's what you're looking for, I'd go elsewhere.
