About one month ago, I needed custom upholstery for my van project. I called Soam and set up an appointment to get an estimate, pick a fabric, and type of cushion from his store. Soam only sees customers by appointment so it's necessary to speak with him. When I came to the store, he showed me a variety of fabrics as well as cushion firmness options. After choosing, he gave me an estimate of how much and how long it would take. For those that have never had upholstery done, it's not cheap. I was a little surprised by the estimate but I wanted good quality work as opposed to cushions on Amazon or something like that. Long story short, my cushions came out great. Soam did/does excellent work and I would definitely get more upholstery work done by him. read more

Soam helped me refurbish a mid-century chair with detached cushions that belonged to my grandfather. I'm leaving a 2 star review primarily because the quote I originally received was incomplete and the final project turned out almost double what I thought when I agreed to move forward. Had I known the final price, I likely would would have looked for another solution as the price is not worth the value. First, the good: - Soam is friendly, was on time for appointments, and helped me pick out a good fabric and color for the cushions. We discussed how to preserve the integrity of the chair while making it usable again. What led to my two star review: - Price: when I decided to move forward with the project I thought the cost would be $650, inclusive of the fabric/foam. Later I was told fabric and foam were extra, plus shipping (for the fabric?), and sales tax, which made the total $1105. I would not have moved forward with this if I had known the price would be this high. So for anyone looking to get work here, I strongly recommend you get a complete estimate with all the lines on his invoice form filled out even if it says they are estimates subject to revision. - Communication: to my surprise, I was informed when I picked up the chair that the original cushions had been thrown away. I was not asked whether this was my preference, and indeed it was not as they had sentimental value for me given that this was my grandfather's chair. He suggested that I should have informed him of this preference (!!). I'm still shocked. Also despite having discussed not wanting to make any new holes in the chair frame, I discovered two new hooks drilled into inside corners to which a protective cover was attached over the chair slats. I don't think the placement of them did any serious damage to the frame, but again I wish he had discussed it with me first. - Design choices: I think the cushion are well made, but the design is not ideal. The shape and thickness deviated from the original cushions (thickness we discussed, shape we did not - again with assumptions), and ultimately it doesn't work as well as the original design, both for how they lock into the chair, and for the overall aesthetic. So you should be very specific with him about what you want, and also trust your own sense of design rather than placing complete trust in his opinion. Ideally you go to an expert to get advice and years of experience to inform your choices, but it doesn't always work out. read more

My first review in MONTHS is five stars for Soam's. I was referred to him by the ladies at Satin Moon fabrics, where I bought new material for a chair I loved that needed an overhaul. He quoted me a fair price at the time, but I still wanted to check around. I spent almost a year (I had a baby in between to be fair) calling around and got a few quotes that were lower, many that were higher, but none that seemed as reasonable as his. When I finally pulled the trigger he offered me free pick up and delivery at no additional charge and the chair was done almost a month before we agreed to--he was busy but since his guys were in the neighborhood they picked it up to work on when he got time. The chair is awesome (check out my before and after pics with this review). I'm really happy with his work, his responsiveness, even his delivery guys were really nice and remembered I had a baby so they were quiet when they dropped it off. LOVE! read more

I have never, ever been treated so rudely over the phone. First off, business phone etiquette 101, when answering you tell the person calling your business name. I asked for a ballpark estimate of what upholstery costs for a sofa. I gave the person a fairly good description with dimensions, fabric, etc. He asked what fabric I was looking for. I told him that I wasn't sure but if he could tell me the average price or a ballpark range (given the dimensions), that would be helpful. He persisted to push back rather than help me at all. Every time I asked a question he'd cut me off and towards the end became very hostile. He insisted that I email him or go into the store to see fabrics. Rather than trying to work with me at all he barked at me over the phone and said "wow you're giving me a hard time lady!" and hung up. Awful business practice. This review is not based on the quality of their work (I did not get that far) but rather their appalling customer service. I typically do not write many reviews, but when service is this atrocious, I feel compelled. I walked into Soam's to inquire about framing. (I was planning to go to a large retailer but was in the neighborhood and decided to support a local business.) The man behind the counter asked if I had an appointment, to which I replied no. Without offering any other help, he said, "If you don't have an appointment, no service, see the sign," and returned to the back. There was no one else in the store! Only when I walked out did I notice a sign about appointments. This policy is fine, but why keep your door open if you are not taking walk-ins? This is one of my rudest customer service experiences ever. Needless to say, I will not be returning and telling everyone I know not to patronize Soam's. read more

Mr. Chang has been doing upholstery for me for years. I bought a fairly intricate dining room armchair and took the seat cushion to him to be redone. It was faded, dirty and generally ugly. Got the cushion back two days after dropping it off. My husband, says it's stunning. I happen to agree. We bought the chair itself at an architectural salvage (junk) store for $35. With the upholstery charge (I am assuming $75 for each cushion since I had more than one done at the time) the chair cost me $105. You cannot get ANY dining room chair now, new, for less than $250. I tell all my neighbors and friends about Mr. Chang.. Thank you, again, for being an artist, and honest, and your delightful self. I have an older recliner chair that has always been my favorite. As it began to wear out I tried to find a new one that would be as well made and comfortable but could not find one. Soam just reupholstered my old chair for me. It is so beautiful and just as comfortable as ever. My friends all think it is a new chair. The cushions in my Sunset home breakfast nook desperately needed to be replaced. Soam has a variety of color vinyls to choose from. We removed the back cushion and only replaced the bottom cushion. The quality was great and matched perfect with the style of the kitchen. We gave him our old cushions as an example but he called us when he realized that the original cushions would be too small since we removed the back cushion. This saved us some money and hassel if the cushion were created as the original size. The final product is a perfect fit. read more

I recently had my sofa upholstered and rebuild at Soam's. I am very very particular and he exceeded my standards. The fabric had was a complicated strips and the sofa was all loose bottom and top pillows. EVERY stripe matches up PERFECTLY!!!. And I wanted the pillows with a more firmer pad and more stuffing in the back pillows. He did exactly what I wanted. I had gotten three bids and his was the most reasonable and as I and my friends have used him many times in years past I decided to continue to use him and he was as EXCELLENT now as he has always been over the years. We had Sloam reupholster our dining room chairs that we had for over 15 years. The chairs were still in excellent condition but in much need of new padding, etc. He did an excellent job on our chairs and completed the job on the time as promised. It was expensive, but worth having him do it. He has tons of experience and takes pride in his work. He ordered the material for us and has access to all sorts of fabric. Wow, I had a terrible result. I came on Yelp here, saw these reviews so I went to Soam to get new cushions for my slipcovered couch. I brought him the original cushions, now 10 years old, looking to replace them. I would have been better off buying foam and dacron on my own or just buying a cheap new couch. His price to replace the cushions was as much as to buy a cheap new couch, but I was looking for quality, so I was willing to pay. He assured me I would get a better quality result than buying a new couch - but I think I ended up with the same foam used on cheap couches. It gets worse, when I came to pick them up, he added $100 to the original bid, said he mispriced them. At the time, I didn't realize I was being lied to, so I went along, even at $100 more, I figured it would be fine, so long as I get another 10 years out of the couch. It has been only a month and the bottom cushions are already showing sag and wear. The top cushions are stiff and weird looking. Plus, remember I mentioned they are slipcovers? Well, I went to wash the covers today only to find out little tufts of Dacron battling stuffed in between the cushions and the slip covers. One has a whole lot of extra loose Dacron stuffed into it on one side, looks like he made the cushions too small and rather than even taking the time to sew the Dacron into the lining, he just jammed it in there, for me to deal with later, random clumps around the cushions - even the dacron sewn into lining is done poorly, with ends on done, and some of the sewing already breaking. What a total drag. This is just so not cool. read more

I needed six dining room chairs and a living room couch and chair reupholstered. I checked Yelp for recommendations and made an appointment with Soam's. I brought one of the dining room cushions and Mr. Soam described the fabric as being chintz. I looked through several books of sample fabric and found something close to what I had. Unfortunately, the material is on backorder because it is rarely ordered nowadays. I was out of luck on the dining room chairs but a week later I returned with one of the cushions from the living room couch. Mr. Soam recognized the material as being tapestry. I again looked through several books of samples but didn't find the material. Mr. Soam was very helpful and took the time to assist me in finding the fabrics. I want him to reupholster my dining room chairs and living room couch and chair so I will go to a large fabric store, find the fabric, and give Mr. Soam the information so he could order what I need. read more
