Following up on Sol Up, absolutely the best solar contractor in Reno. We've been having bird…read more(pigeon) issues with our four-year old Sol Up system, where the birds have been using the PV cells for protection. Spoke with their office folks, who sent out a representative to assess the condition, and prepare a strategy to make the system bird proof. I wish I could give 10 stars. There is a good reason their reviews are high…read more Yes, it is a long review, yet there is a lot to mention about Sol-Up. First to say, I know a lot about this stuff. I've been an electronics and software engineering consultant for over 40 years, designing all sorts of electronics such as medical, scientific, high energy, and even solar inverters for many corporate clients. The wife says I over-analyze everything, but I want to make sure there are no regrets when making a big electrical change on the home. Sol-Up did not ask for this review. I contacted 5 companies in the area to ask questions about installing a Tesla PowerWall (whole home backup power). The previous owner had already installed solar panels years ago (a company now out of business). The one place that impressed me most was Sol-Up as the pricing was good and they were smart. More importantly, the initial contact "Matt" knew what he was talking about and had instant answers to many detailed technical questions. Matt smoothly passed me to the project Coordinator (Colleen) whom was always on top of the process and informing me about the status and schedule. They first came to review the situation and gave me pricing. I ordered the PowerWall installation and paid a reasonable small deposit and signed the online agreement. At installation time, I got Fernando and Cody; two young, smart, experienced men whom were confident, careful, respectful, and considerate of the property. A Powerwall is a complicated installation to tie into existing solar production and the electrical panel. They did a fabulous job working in really cold weather. Then David "Handyman" came to patch and paint things to perfectly blend with the wall. Afterwards, Colleen had the building inspector and Roman come together within just two days to make sure everything got approved. No problems and the inspector was pleased. Yea, NV Energy had to put in their 2 cents worth. He came a few days later to inspect to his satisfaction and install the meter. I asked if things were by him. His reply was... "Yes, this is a nice installation, and I wish every company would do this well". There was a small hiccup during operation where the Tesla App wasn't showing the flow of energy properly although everything worked. Joe came out immediately to do a minor reconfiguration of sensors and all was well. Days later, Matt followed up again to see if everything was ok. When there is a power failure, the lights don't even flicker and no indication the power was ever lost or came back on. Just a text message to give an update. Fabulous. Bottom line is that Sol-Up did the best job of any company I have ever had to do a big electrical task. Other companies could learn a lot from their process. When it comes time to upgrade solar panels in the future or to install an additional backup battery, there is no doubt who I would call or recommend. Thanks Sol-Up team.

I was told that it would be a teardown and rebuild of the 2 solar panels. In fact, when the 2 guys got here it only took them about 20 minutes to disconnect the 2 end panels and put them on the ground. After the roof was repaired, they came back and put them back in place and reconnected them. This took another 20 min. The right thing for Great Basin Solar to have done would be to adjust the cost do to the limited amount of time the job really took to complete. I will say that the 2 guys who did the work were great and easy to work with. The cost of this simple job cost me about 5% of the total amount I paid for the whole solar system. I would not recommend Great Basin Solar.

Travis faked his way along, until I paid him for the design and permitting phase. Then he ran off, ignored our project, and failed to complete the required HOA permits, failed to complete the solar system design, and failed to apply for County building permits. A real scoundrel, not to be trusted. We filed detailed complaints with the Nevada State Contractors Board, Better Business Bureau, and his Bonding company. All of whom said we need to sue him in court. Warning: when his lips are moving, you know he's telling false stories. Same for his slime-covered attorney. A nasty company.

I also had a negative experience with Tesla Solar and I wish more people would post their reviews…read moreof their experiences so that I wouldn't have made the mistake of using Tesla and instead gone with our local solar company, Great Basin. First, my interactions with the Tesla team was positive once they got past missing their assessment appointments or their constant rescheduling. But I didn't much mind that because I know how short staffed and busy companies are. Once the assessor showed up, he was great and helpful. He didn't make it seem like a quick process. He said expect it to take about four months once we submit all our paperwork. Great! It was really fast once all the forms were submitted on both sides. Then, out of the blue and a month earlier than expected, we get a call saying the solar panels can be installed. Amazing!! The installers were fast and professional. The panels look great! The city inspected and signed off within a few weeks and I was excited to think we'd have solar running in only three months from when the process started and we'd be enjoying that lucrative summer sun! But nope! A big NOPE!!! Once the city approved the permits and we paid Tesla $31k, we never heard from them again. It has been now two months the roof weights, solar panels, have been installed and if the PM, who apparently lives out of state, does respond, his responses are, "we are backlogged" or "60-90 more days." Tesla is unethical, unresponsive and once you pay them, they don't care about you at all. On top of that, our go to electrician came out to install an EV charger this week and he inspected the Tesla battery and electrical work and said it was not good and was shocked the city of Reno's inspector approved and permitted it. Which made a very frustrating experience with Tesla now more frustrating. Do NOT use Tesla! Go with Great Basin. I am so over anything Tesla, we went with the Ford MachE for an EV over the Tesla Model Y.

The latest snag is that they're asking me to get engineering documents for our roof. These documents are public record and can be downloaded by Tesla (or anyone), so I told our project manager (Torri) that and she canceled our order and made us eat the deposit. I have a 2013 Model S and I've steadily watched the service attitude and capability decline over the years to the point at which I would not buy another Tesla, and I definitely would recommend looking elsewhere for residential solar.

On 3/6/25, we lost all power with an alarm on the Solark inverter. i contacted Shawn who put me in touch with his incredible employee, Vince who called within an hour to help troubleshoot the system. He asked me questions to understand the situation and said he would be out to assess and hopefully repair, 3/7/25. Vince arrived and within minutes diagnosed the issue and made the necessary repairs. He even allowed me to video a tutorial on what to do if we are ever faced with a failure again. Before I retired I was in the customer service business for over 40 years and have to say I have never met a vendor and team who cares about their customers in the way that Aspen Electric!
