TV Dinner
Joy G.

Adorable little place. Staff was very nice. Food was good. The TV dinner was a perfect portion. I wasnt fond of the beans - but thats just my preference. The corn bread was amazing. The burnt ends were tender. Didnt need extra sauce but I did try a little of the spicy - tasty.

Smokin J's BBQ is a straight up legendary place. I can't speak on the venue or customer service because I ordered via DoorDash, but the food was on point. I had the brisket which was Smokey, juicy and tender as they come. Those Texas Twinkies were top tier! Overall, a great spot for your BBQ cravings.

Came here because our friend was gifted a gift card to come here. The bbq was good, the bark on their brisket was actually pretty impressive. Service was cool, nothing special the girl behind the counter was a young introverted young lady that answered questions. Plenty of outdoors seating here bathroom is located right in front of the smoker which is cool to see. I highly reccomend the brisket melt. It comes on sourdough bread and it was greasy and delicious. Great spot to bring the kids after the park or train ride and plenty of parking across the street. We'll be back

This is beginning to be a habit! Smokin J's is located in the Old Poway Village Shopping Center. A beautiful and historic part of Poway. It's the exact type of place I look for when I travel. Fortunately for me (but not my waist line) it's close, convenient, and open seven days a week! They have an extensive menu of delicious barbecue items that will satisfy everyone in your party. My go to is the pork belly taco. Although it's not prepared consistently (sometimes the pork is one large piece and other times it's chopped). I prefer it whole, but it's always tasty either way. I also like the brisket sandwich. My new favorite sides are the crack beans and cornbread (perfect texture and density). They don't have beef ribs on the menu but I was told they sell it once in a while. Bonus: gift cards are sold at Poway Costco.

***take out review*** The TV dinners are small. Any grown adult will need to add more meat. The BBQ sauce is super tasty and needed for the dry chicken. Corn bread was very dense and a bit bland. My wife loved the potato salad and brisket. My favorite part was the sausage. So yummy. I'll go back to dine in and hope for a better experience. I have faith. Worth the try!

Been wanting to try some great BBQ for a while and heard this place was just that! A little drive for me, but what the heck. If its great, they will come! Nice place with good outdoor seating in the old area of Poway. I had the brisket, mac and cheese, cole slaw, baked beans, and the beef tallow fries! The winner of the day was definitely the fries, but the brisket came in a close second. Melted in your mouth brisket. Mac and cheese and cole slaw were formidable and the baked beans were tasty. The only downfall was the BBQ sauce which seemed kind of watered down. Not much flavor. All in all good BBQ. Will definitely be back!

Poway location, solid BBQ!

Top 2 best BBQ in San Diego. I've tried 'em all. These boys have got that authentic bbq flavor that keeps everyone coming back. Not gonna tell you who is tied with them, you can do your due diligence. For the record, I never thought in a million years that I would order and then absolutely love a bbq burrito, but holy fudge so bomb. And huge. Cool brothers that own it and the downtown spot is on point too. Maybe some better brews on tap tho, that hazy gives me bubble guts. BBQ is life! Keep it up fellas.

Everything here is absolutely delicious. Quick, friendly, counter service where you take can take your food to one of the shaded tables outside to enjoy.

Our group of about 30 came on a Sunday afternoon. Seating is very limited so keep that in mind if you come with a big party. They don't take reservations and it is open and outdoor seating (no indoor seating is available). Lots of free parking available in the lot or street parking. It's the type of place where you order at the counter and the staff brings out your order. There could be a long line depending on the day/time you go. I opted to order the 3x3 which ample enough for 2 people to share! I shared my entree with my daughter. Since we aren't fans of beans and cole slaw, I requested an upgrade to the Mac n Cheese and they were able to accommodate. My meal came with brisket, pulled pork, chicken leg and thigh, cornbread, and mac n cheese. The flavor was real smokey and the bbq had a nice flavor - not spicy and not sweet. Surprised that everything was delicious! The brisket is my favorite and in fact I ordered 1lbs of brisket as takeout. I paid about $80 which isn't cheap but a solid spot as an option to eat out in the area.

Pretty sweet bbq place outside seating with a good view of the historic poway train yard. I had the pork belly sandwich which was really good. They were out of corn bread to i went with the baked beans they were okay. Beans with celery kinda leaves a funny after taste. Bbq sauce was okay spicy could be more spicy but its poway soo ya know. Over all pretty good.

This is a small jewel in a old neighborhood in Poway. People working in the restaurant are friendly with family like vibe. They are one of few places that offers dry rub BBQ around here. The BBQ is good. I guess was not how I wanted to be but, there was many customers taking togo so, I guess is popular here.

Breakfast brisket burrito

We heard their breakfast menu returned to the Poway location so we just had to come back to see if it was as delicious as we remembered! But I have gotten accustomed to their regular burritos at this point, so which burrito would I choose? Well, we came at 11AM and both the brunch as well as the lunch menu were available, so we ordered from both menus! We ordered the breakfast brisket burrito ($18), Cali J-rito ($19.25), and cajun fries ($6.50). - Breakfast brisket burrito: I did not take a picture of the brunch menu (to provide you the specific ingredients), but there was a hefty portion of brisket and a runny egg inside. It was just as delicious as I remembered. - Cali J-rito: If you can't make up your mind regarding whether you want pork belly or brisket, don't worry about it. There is a giant helping of both stuffed into this burrito. - Cajun fries: I always order these because the seasoning is out of this world, but I never understand why the fries are not crispy? I generally take them home as leftovers to reheat and crisp up in my air fryer. ONE DAY, I will try the other items that I am desperately wanting to try (brisket hash, melted bird, boneless rib sandwich, brisket chimi fries), but when I show up I automatically crave the burritos. The main drawback from the whole dining experience is the only option for outdoor dining. WHY is it so hot yet the outdoor fans are not turned on? I was sweating from the spicy BBQ sauce (TOO spicy. I much prefer their regular BBQ sauce and homemade ketchup) and the oppressive heat. Also SO MANY FLIES. I don't know if they grow them bigger in North County, but the flies were huge, had no fear, and kept trying to crawl into my paper bag of fries. I don't think I can come back this summer for dine-in, only take-out. The bathroom is for the entire shopping center (doesn't belong to Smokin J's). There is only a hand dryer so for those of you who do not like touching the door knob with your bare hands after you've just washed them, I would recommend bringing a paper towel with you.

This was the best bbq I've had outside of Texas. The place is so cute and all the workers were sooo friendly! Worth my 1.5 hour drive there! I will absolutely be back. My daughter has celiac and safely ate the ribs and chicken salad!! Everything gluten free was clearly marked. They were so sweet and gave me a free dry rub!!

The potato salad is gluten free

You can substitute a rack of ribs for the chicken or extra pulled pork or brisket

Do they have Shiner Bock?

YES!!

It's mostly all outdoor dining. We brought our dog.

Any vegetarian options?

Salads, succotash, potato salad, quesadillas (not on the menu, but just ask and they will make it), and a bunch of sides.

We do not have call waiting. If we are on the phone with another customer please wait a few minutes and then try back.

They serve beer but I don't think they still have the shiner bock anymore.

Is there gluten/dairy/soy free options?

Aside from the obvious items (buns, Mac n cheese, pecan pie), everything is gluten and dairy free. The only thing we have that has trace amounts of soy is our bbq sauce.

I was surprised that they don't have beans or rice available for purchase. They advertise themselves as a "Tijuana Style Taco Shop". I have never eaten anywhere in Tijuana so I don't know if no beans or rice is a Tijuana thing as well. My Carne Asada taco was really, really good. It had plenty of meat and toppings - guacamole, onions, cilantro and salsa. The salsa had such great flavor and just enough heat. My Adobada taco was just plain awful. The pork had no flavor, tasted old and stale. I think it old leftover Adobada meat. When I say it had no flavor it had NO FLAVOR. The meat looked like someone collected all the scraps and saved them to use sometime later. The meat was about the size of a match stick. The meat was really old, hard and completely flavorless. After a couple of bites I threw the taco out. Adobada means "marinated" in Spanish. It's is usually made with various cuts of pork - shoulder, pork butt, Boston butt, boneless ribs or thin pork loin slabs. The meat is usually soaked in a rich adobo made of dried red chiles, orange juice, vinegar, garlic and other spices before being cooked on a flat top grill, skillet or on a vertical spit. I have already gone on too long. However, today I had an appointment at a business that shares the parking lot with Tacos Asadero. After my appointment I thought let me try the tacos again. I ordered one Carne Asada and one Adobada taco to go. I was hoping for a better experience. Again, I really enjoyed the Carne Asada taco. They do it so well. Don't skip getting the little cups of their red salsa. In fact, ask for several. It is totally on point and has nice flavor and good little kick to it. My Adobada taco was still not very good. I will admit the meat tasted fresher, the pieces were definitely bigger but there still was no flavor. I will still swing by but I will be sticking with the Carne Asada or trying some of their other menu items. Love the inside of the restaurant. It's very clean, neat decor and about 8-10 tables. They also have 2 or 3 tables outside. During both of my visits there was a constant flow of customers. When I was leaving with my to-go order there was a party of 4 people who had just finished eating there. I asked them how their lunch was. They loved everything they ordered which was quite bit of food EXCEPT the Adobada tacos. They said that it had no flavor and the meat was really TOUGH, CHEWY and way over cooked. He equated the meat to shoe leather.

It's got a fun San Diego surfboard vibe mixed with sports jerseys and pictures on the wall which makes it a fun place to go with friends. I was definitely underwhelmed by my California burrito - it was a little undercooked for my preference - no melted cheese on the inside and the tortilla seemed like it was just taken out of a bag and slapped on and it was actually a little tough to chew. The French fries didn't taste that good to me either and I felt as if I'd be better going across the lot to McDonalds and ordering a few fries to add in there. I was a little surprised the burrito wasn't cooked more because my to go order took a little bit longer than I expected to get to me and there wasn't that many people inside the restaurant so I thought at least it would be really hot and ready but I was a bit bummed by the overall taste when I bit in due to the way it was cooked and just overall taste.
