The limited selection of drinks and a few sides besides chips
Ivan J.

First time visiting. Was brought by a coworker for a lunch meeting. The sandwich I had was amazing! I didn't pay so I can't comment on price. I ordered the tri tip sandwich and it was delicious! The vodoo chips and the soda I had were also great. The sandwich was a decent size. The few negatives... Not very many choices period. The items they do have are done extremely well. I was able to look at the meat selection and had sticker shock. Maybe if I purchase in the future and justify the price I will change my mind. No fountain drinks either I think. It's a little to fancy for my taste for a deli. I prefer the true deli experience like Gino's. I'm still not sure I would bring the fam.

Got a few sandwiches from the deli inside. All the meats and fillings were amazing. Each one had some type of homemade sauce or chutney.Ours were toasted and warm. The meat market inside had some really great choices, and rubs and sauces. There were also some pre made sides in containers.Something I would bring to my brother to switch it up at our next grill. They had a beef enchilada sausage that seemed interesting.

All I want to say is please go try the Delicatexan. The food is amazing. I have had two sandwiches from here, the pastrami and the Italian. They are both so fresh and the staff is always sweet. The food is simple but yet so so so gooood. It's a great sandwich with simple but fresh ingredients that's full of flavor. Go check is out.

Butcher meat was good! But the burger I ordered was inedibly burned, then they remade it and it was just as inedibly burned. These photos are of "remade" one. Almost as if it were on purpose both times

Who makes the best sandwiches, you know the kind that you remember for a lifetime? The answer varies for everyone but I think we can all agree if a butcher serves food, start there. As a child growing up in Charleston SC, I would visit my Italian relatives in Connecticut who owned a butchery. If you're thinking the mob & Goodfellas, unfortunately you're not far off. That said I still remember the smells, all the charcuterie, the fresh mozzarella, meatballs, etc. They would slice slivers of meat and sometimes blindfold me so I could tell the Soppressata, Mortadella, Proscuitto, apart. Their "grinders" are the reason I'm so picky about my cold subs to this day. Back to the review. After leaving Witte museum across the street my kids and I were hungry. Generally, I let them chose what to eat when I have the chance to see them, but today they didn't get a vote. We were going to Smokeshack Delicatexan. We crossed the intersection which fortunately wasn't that busy and walked up to the front doors. A couple things to note, first this isn't a bad part of town and they have a larger sit down restaurant beside it that focuses on BBQ. Opening the door, the aromas instantly hit the nose, tickling it with all kinds of cured meats, exotic cheeses and fresh cuts of premium quality meats such as steaks, pork loins, etc. Being a former chef, I engaged in some banter thinking I would pick up a rack of lamb while there. Alas they're cutting down on their variety and lamb seems to be one of the causalities which is a shame b/c lamb is so darn good. I'm somewhat kicking myself b/c I eyeballed a perfectly marbled ribeye for 5 minutes and didn't purchase it. The butcher was kind enough to slice a little of a couple meats for me and the kids to sample. It was simply bliss and perfection. Also note there are lots of other items to purchase, stacked to the ceiling that one can't find at HEB such as local sauces, honey, wood chips, etc. I highly advise taking a while and let your imagination run wild with possibilities. After our small talk all three of us ordered the cold Italian as it had the most homemade meats all on freshly baked hoagie rolls and dressing. The food came out quickly and we all acted like the dinosaurs at the museum. The bread had a nice crunch while pillowy soft in the middle. The meats were proportioned right as they weren't just a brick, rather perfectly sliced layers and marbled with fatty cured goodness. My kids opted for the provolone however I got the fresh mozz. Both were great but I believe mine was divine. I will admit the sandwiches could have been elevated even more if they were to opt for 100% shredded lettuce rather than a whole leaf and some shredded. The reason is shredding adds a certain familiar texture while a whole leaf, might be trendy, but it competes with the meat rather than elevates it. As a personal preference I like a miniscule amount of thin cut red onion. Those huge chunks of onions are too much and dominate the heat and crunch. Side note, my kids don't like tomatoes, so on a 6" "sub" I had 6 tomato slices and since the produce was so fresh, it added even more moisture which was fine by me. Unfortunately, I don't live in SA but close to Austin which means I have pretty good options closer to home. Otherwise, this establishment might be my go-to sub shop and butcher. While I can't offer much insight on many of the other options, I can say with pretty good confidence that I believe all menu items will be a fantastic choice. Please note the prices are ever so slightly higher but that's b/c you're getting premium quality meats as apposed to any other sandwich alternatives which utilize meat glues and preservatives in their products to last longer. I definitely recommend dropping by Smokeshack Delicatexan for a sandwich experience unlike any other or to splurge on the best cuts of meat you can buy anywhere.

Tri tip sandwich

I got the tri tip sandwich. I added an extra garlic aioli mixed with there homemade hot sauce that was on the table. The sandwich was delicious. It had a healthy amount of steak and the arugula was a nice touch. My only complaint is that the tri tip was not cut against the grain which made the sandwich harder to eat and less tender to chew.

El jefe

This place is a gem! I love a good deli sandwich and this place had me dreaming about my next order. The shop was clean and one of the staff was friendly, while the other was... rude and dismissive (the only reasons for 4 stars instead of 5). Either way, the sandwiches were fresh, made to order, and so delicious! Highly recommend and I can't wait to go back!

I absolutely adore this meat market. Their in house sausage making is amazing. My favorite is the enchilada or the chicken broccoli rice. The smoke shack sausage is a classic too. The side choices, can't go wrong with twice baked potatoes or the casserole. Brisket Mac n cheese yum! Today tried the El Jefe sandwich, while sooo good, was wishing for bigger sandwich. Lol to be fair i was starving and could have had two. Lol Was really good, toasted bread, I'm not sure what was on it, because i was hungry and asked the guy behind the counter his favorite he recommended this, and not wrong!

This place is pretty darn cool. I hadn't checked it out until now, but you better believe I'll be back. This place is quaint with a selection of meats that are sourced from within 150 miles. The people who work here are well informed about the products they are selling. They have multiple cuts of beef as well as chicken and quail when I went in. They even have jalapeño poppers!! Grass fed options are available which is great if you are looking for something a little healthier. The butcher added that bone is available if you want to make your own stock. The biggest surprise is that they have pre-made side options. I went with the creamed corn and twice baked potatoes on this visit. After a long day of work, this is a quick, easy, and delicious thing to pop in the oven. My husband said the poppers he's ever had...I guess I will find out.

Not worth the price. Ordered a large charcuterie board that was supposed to be large enough for 10-12 people. While I understand this is not meant to be a full meal. I still don't feel this was worth the $95. Meats were ok.

Brie, Turkey, & Apple Chutney on Ciabatta roll.

The Smoke Shack Meat Market has always been top-shelf for its sides (creamed corn, parmesan risotto, twice baked potatoes, etc), beautiful cuts of rib eye, pork chops, a huge assortment of homemade sausages, and other butcher shop must-haves, BUT now, they have expanded to include a great deli-style counter with a thoughtful menu of lunchtime sandwiches. The sandwiches are definitely elevated to SSMM's high quality and very flavorful standard that is found in all their other offerings. Today, I had the Turkey, Brie, & Apple Chutney on Ciabatta... It was fantastic! The turkey was smoked, the brie was ample and gooey, and the apple chutney was the x-factor, giving the sandwich an element of sweetness that pulled everything together. I'm thrilled to have to have this lunch (even dinner) option available, and it is now my first, go-to lunch option.

Burnt Patty Melt

Patty was dry and overcooked, bread was burnt. I guess there's a reason why they're only always out of the good stuff. I would stick to the Texas Reuben or else skip this place overall.

Great variety

What a great unexpected one Stop shop for dinner! I absolutely didn't realize all they had. My husband sent me there to get steaks better than the commissary quality and we were not disappointed. Yes it's expensive but you could compromise and get some thing like the Denver cut for only $14 a pound or really splurge for a nice waygu beef for $50 a pound. They had more delicious sides than I knew what to do with including bacon mac & cheese and smoked baked beans. They had a great selection of complementary wines and local beers. They also had some fun local jellies, honeys, and trucker hats. There's something for everyone here even during a pandemic. Good luck guys!! #meat

Great market and great location. For those of us that live in town this is a super place to get Akaushi beef.

With Bolners still shut down due to COVID I had to venture out of the comfort zone and decided to try Smoke Shack meat market.
