Yikes! $60 for a smog check! No organization. Nobody seemed to care when I pulled onto the property. I pulled up to an empty garage where I found a technician. Yelling across the passenger-side, I got the attention of the tech and he showed me where to park. I wasn't sure if I should visit the front office, or stand there waiting for instructions. The tech took my car and pulled it into the garage. The tech went straight to work, barely looking up to say, "It'll be about 15 minutes." "So do I wait in the lobby?" I ask. "Sure." He answers. So I head for the lobby where I'm greeted by the front office manager, I guess. "Can I help you?" "Oh, your tech has my car in for a smog check.". He seemed to be alright with that and I carry on assuming the tech will fetch me, or call the front desk when he's finished. I sit in the lobby reading my book for 30 minutes. I'm thinking my car should be done by now, so I ask the guy at the front desk, "Will they notify you when my car is finished?" "No." He answers. "So I just deal with the tech and pay him directly?" "Yes." That would have been nice to know. Zero communication happening here. I make my way to the back of the building where I see my car all set and parked in the parking lot again. How long has it been sitting there finished? Trust me, with the smog or cigarette smoke (I'm not sure which) wafting through the lobby, I'm definitely not sitting there for my health. So I go to pay the tech. He reveals the total: $60! I was expecting to get the $32 online price. After a bit of discussion it turns out I'm at the wrong shop. I had missed Joe's Smog Check by just about a block. "I've made a huge mistake!" I admit, "Can you honor Joe's discount price of $32.00? I was totally not expecting to pay $60" "Well, you walked away before I could give you a quote." Says the tech, "I didn't know where you went!" "Are you serious?! I went to wait in YOUR lobby! Like YOU told me." A manager (the owner?) was retrieved. A bit more discussion took place in a foreign language (Israelli? To keep me out of the loop, I suppose) and to the manager's (or owner's) credit, he finally offered me a price of $40. I realize it was my stupid mistake to pull into the wrong smog shop. That doesn't negate the lack of communication and organization this business displays. It also irks me that it took so much effort to get them to $40, when the previous poster had a coupon for $26. I see that their website claims "We guarantee the lowest prices in town." So much for that guarantee. Joe's has a standing discount price of $32. No coupon required. Smog Experts would not match that price. The upside: There really isn't any waiting at Smog Experts. I didn't see another customer come through the lobby the entire 30 minutes I was waiting. When heading out to Joe's Smog Shop, be sure you're not pulling into Smog Experts -- a few driveways too early. read more

Great experience with this place, and I never even had the smog check! I was in the process of selling my car and went to have it smogged in preparation for the sale. I drove in and was stopped immediately by the mechanic there, who told me "you don't need to have a smog check" -- what?? Yep, it's true, I drive a hybrid and I had no idea that didn't have to have smog checks (another perk of the hybrid vehicle!). Guy could have EASILY taken my money, but didn't. I would highly recommend this place for his honesty alone. Also, they were polite on the phone, and told me to "come on down," even though it was close to closing time. Been here about 4 times in the last 3 yrs. Best prices, no hassle. In and out no problem. Tip: use the web coupon (just search google) Better prices than Joes for earlier model cars. I also found a coupon on smogtips for $24.75+state fees or $35 net. With smogtips, if only a % or $ off is shown, what I found out the previous time (2 years ago?) the merchant is probably trying to hide the actual cost, that is why I picked this place over others in the area. Anyway, since I was already in the area it beat going to the ones near me at $50-60 net--after coupon. The service was impeccable and took less than 10 minutes, but depends if there are others waiting as it is just 1 person working the station. That explains why the other reviewer was upset when he wasn't in on time (I think he said he had a doc appt); if you are in the area only during a small window then I suggest calling ahead, like "what time are you closing today and is it OK to come at 2pm." That is how I found out he was open--a national 4th of July holiday falling on July 5th--a Sherlock Holmes deduction well maybe not exactly. When my car was done and I was ready to drive away, I mentioned Yelp and he said he doesn't know why the guy down the street gets more reviews when he has been in business for 10 years. I think it is because the other place advertises on Yelp (and @ slightly cheaper --depending on car) so, naturally, this should be expected. read more

WOW, Super fast prob. less than 15 min. So far it was the fastest smog inspection I've ever had. Only $35 dollars for my '99 Toyota Camry, and magic words at the end: "All you have to do now - is to pay your registration fees at DMV". HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!! read more

i wish i had known about joe's smog check down the street before going to this place. it was such a huge waste of time. they said they opened at 8:30. i called the day before. so i thought i could go before work. they have 2 smog stations. smog checks take about 20 min. i could be in and out before 9 and get to work on time since it's just down the street. well, i got there at 8:20 and waited. 8:30 rolled around and i saw no signs that it was open. so i asked one of the other mechanics if they were the smog guy. they said no. they just shared the space. but that the guy would be there soon. maybe 9 or 9:30. WHAT? they advertise they are open at 8:30. not 9 or 9:30. "it just depends on the day" the guy said. so i waited a few more minutes. a guy came. i asked "are you the smog guy?" nope! "but he'll be here soon." that's when i bolted. the area was not very pleasant to wait around for. i didn't care if i had a cheap coupon to get the smog check. i was taking my business elsewhere even if it cost me more just on principle. later that i day i found out that joe's smog just down the street was the same price. i took it there today and the service was SO GOOD. so don't even think of going to this place. they are horrible. read more

I was in need of a quick smog test, as I only had 2 days until my DMV renewal was due. I read about Joe's and tried it, but they were too busy. Then I went back the next morning at 11 (opening time) and waited until 11:30 and no one ever showed! Turns out the guy (Joe?) didn't come in due to family emergency. So, nothing against them, but I was still in need! I found this place through another website that helps you search for approved smog locations and there was a coupon for $26. I called at 5PM, drove there in 5 minutes, and was out by 5:30 or maybe sooner. Took only 15 mins, no waiting, and grand total came to $35 (with electronic filing). So, this is a definite great alternative to the more "popular" joint. The guy who helped me (Zareh?) was very nice as well. read more

Very nice guy. I called before I go to make sure they're open and will honor the coupon I printed online. I arrived @ around 11am on a Friday morning. Took about 15-20 minutes. No wait. $35 including certificate and ETF. Definitely cheapest I paid for Test Only station (I paid $60 on Sepulveda and Venice and $40 on Venice and Robertson before). I usually look for station that is about 15 minutes away from me to let my engine run smooth before I take it in for the test. He's the cheapest I can find around the area as long as u bring in the coupon (I found the coupon on www.smogtips.com). The only thing is that it is slightly tricky to find as it's in between 2 shops in an alley/driveway. Otherwise everything was great. read more

Fuck this place. Had smog done there 4 months ago to renew my registration and have been waiting for the license plate sticker.. never came. Printed up my deposited check for the dmv and was planning to go down and ask what was going on when I get pulled over for expired tags and turns out.. they are waiting on the smog check. ??? Wtf? Go down to this smog check today to get a reprint, and they have no record of me being there at all since last year. The fuck? No wonder the dmv didn't renew. Fuck this place. Now I have to pay another $50 to have it done and fix this mess. As soon as I find my receipt I'm going back to get a refund.
