If you have an older car, take it somewhere else! I came by and they refused to test my car since it was built in 1987, saying it was too much work. They seem to only be interested in the 2 minute jobs where they plug in to your car and get an instant pass/fail from the ECU. EDIT: In response to the owner's comment on my review, apparently according to the CA Bureau of Automotive Repair Health and Safety Code, Chapter 5, Article 2, Subsection 44012 allows for refusal of inspection due to vehicles that "cannot physically be inspected", which I assume may mean a lack of equipment on the test station's part: "The test procedures may authorize smog check stations to refuse the testing of a vehicle that would be unsafe to test, or that cannot physically be inspected, as specified by the department by regulation. The refusal to test a vehicle for those reasons shall not excuse or exempt the vehicle from compliance with all applicable requirements of this chapter." https://www.bar.ca.gov/pdf/Laws_and_Regs_Manual_2014_LegReg_20140718.pdf So it seems that they're just not equipped to handle older cars. For the record, my car is fairly standard: front-engined, water-cooled, tailpipe facing straight out the back. Every other test station I've taken it to has had zero issue testing it. read more

Super fast, friendly, cost effective and efficient! I called this morning to make an appointment, but was told that an appointment wouldn't be necessary. I waited about 30 seconds for the car in front of me to back out, and began my smog check service almost immediately. I stepped out of the car and was told it would take about 10 minutes, but the whole process was finished in 8 minutes or less. Remember to show the coupon from the website! I did a Google search for smog stations in my area and Berkeley Green Smog Check was one of three stations I called. This station had the best price, beating others by over $10.00, and just as important, the gentleman who answered the phone was very nice and informative. Actually, I live in El Cerrito, so really it was the way the gentleman came across over the phone that motivated me to head out to Berkeley, and not the $10.00 savings. This is the BEST SMOG STATION I have ever used! The Gentleman over the phone turned out to be the technician to test my car. I told him I was required to do a smog check because of an ownership transfer (I bought the car from a friend). He asked me if I had any DMV paperwork, which I did and showed him. He immediately noticed a mistake on the paperwork but said he thought he could still smog the car, and sure enough it work!!! Afterward, when I went to the DMV to finalize the transfer, the DMV worker even noticed the error and commented that "your smog place really knew what they were doing, most companies would have sent you back to us to fix the error. I had a very good experience here from my first call through driving away. Mohamed was extremely helpful and warm. Quick efficient service while I waited. And, when I didn't pass the test (not a big surprise as my car is very old and I knew might be in some trouble) he gave me good info and websites for the vehicle retirement and vehicle repair assistance programs through the bureau of auto repair, and made sure I understood the timing I needed to follow not to lose my opportunity.
