Loved checking out this farmer's market on a dreary Saturday a couple weekends ago in Amsterdam!…read more Located in the Jordaan neighborhood, this market has a history of being located in this public square since 1623, when it was renamed after the newly built Noorderkerk, a church which still stands today. Its prior name was Prisenmarkt (named after Prinsengracht (Prince canal)). The earliest version of the market sold everything from pottery, textiles, household items, second-hand goods and pigeons. There's a detailed accounting of this market's history on their website. The current iteration of the market consists of 1) a farmer's market with many local and artisanal producers of farm produce, meats and dairy, baked goods, etc. and 2) a "general goods" market which consists of stands selling housewares, art, vintage clothing and accessories, antiques, textiles and household furnishings, and more. The former is held on Saturdays 9-4pm, the latter on Saturdays same time as the farmers market and Mondays 9-2pm. From where I was walking around, it looked like about three dozen vendors with stands of varied sizes gathered here to sell on a Saturday morning. I also arrived around 9:30am, so there were still vendors setting up too. What a bustling atmosphere and certainly lots of locals doing some weekend food shopping--saw plenty of veggies, fruit, bread, placed directly in bicycle crates (on the front or back of this popular transportation method Amsterdam is well-known for) and biked away. So many yummy looking items! It made me wish I had a kitchen there so I could buy and prepare food from this market. If mister (racist right wing politician) Wilders wants to arrange for less Maroccan people In the Netherlands, then he has never been here. Very small indeed but packed to the ceiling with more variety of food ware than you can imagine. If you need something from a recipe and you've never heard of it before: Mabrouk has it. The most kind and cheerfull guys are working here, working their butts off and fast as humanly possible :) The check-out line goes through the shop and is sometimes very very long (almost the whole shop) but don't you worry, you'll be next to pay in minutes. Also: do come here when your budget is low, the prices are really moderate. Fresh fruits and vegetables are increasingly biological, the meat still isn't but since Mart Smeets buys his meat here, I guess it's the best! Check the pictures. I just love love love Mabrouk!

I would pass Mabrouk multiple times, completely oblivious of what a a gem it is. I decided to wonder on in here out of curiousity, and loved everybit of it. My eyes lit up over so many of their products. The only downer about this market, it can get real tight in here. Never the less, Mabrouk has some great products worth checking out and the majority of the items are price reasonable. Surprisingly you will also find a few gluten-free products in here as well.

A deliciously fresh bottle of juice for under 3 euros! You put your bottle under the spout, push the button, and watch as your fresh juice is squeezed into your bottle. The juice is fantastic and you can taste the freshness of it. The oranges are just sweet enough and it's so wonderful to know it's all juice with no additives. The bottle is about 6 oz., but you can also purchase a larger bottle (can't remember the cost). There's no way you can get a bottle of fresh OJ in the states for this little bit of money! The food they carry seems to be pretty much on the healthy side. They have ready made meals you can get for a quick dinner. There are also the regular grocery items for those looking for more. Lots of different ready made salads, a meat market, fresh veggies, a fish/seafood section, and a bakery are also here. Their offerings are extensive and it's a great place to pop in for a quick meal or snack item. I got a container of soup and a margarita focaccia at the bakery that our nice hotel clerk reheated for me. Great for a quick and inexpensive meal! Sorry, no pictures!

It is in an ideal location for tourists looking to grab a cold drink or stock up on essentials, while in the city, especially due to its location being very close to public transport links, and museums. It is located in a basement but you can get a decent mobile phone signal inside, even after heading down the escalator. For tourists, Albert Heijin is the largest supermarket chain in the Netherlands, it's pretty much a brand you can't hide from and it seems they have stores everywhere you look with almost 1000 stores in the Netherlands. Unlike some AH stores, they do accept foreign Mastercard and Visa cards here, which seems to have changed in the past couple of years, as some older reviewers did state this wasn't possible. This specific location is pretty large and carries two main benefits over the AH To Go stores dotted around the city: - Product Selection (Larger store, so has many more products including the freshly squeezed orange machine, which was turned on and functioning) - Price (Reasonably cheaper compared to AH To Go stores, meaning you can save some money here compared to their stores nearby, in general I noticed prices were slightly more than back home, but prices were good compared to other stores I visited in the Netherlands) Most of the checkouts here are self-service, but there are a couple of manned checkouts. The self-checkouts were reasonably easy to use, with an English language option, and a staff member on hand to help. I did experience an issue where I required a staff member's approval for my product, I did only purchase a bottle of freshly squeezed orange juice, so I'm not sure if they offer random checks or if it was some sort of verification. You will also need to save your receipt, or request a short barcode to leave the store, so make sure to take it with you! 4*
