Beautiful orchard to spend time out in nature with friends and family. Very cute farm animals,…read moreincluding a herd of friendly goats. My friends had the cider donuts and said they're fantastic. I had the mulled hot cider, which was a bit too sweet...but that may have just been the apples. They have a corn maze for $5 per person and a peck of apples is $19 pp. Great time!

Overall it's a decent spot for apple picking and getting your cider donut fix. It can be busy but…read moredoesn't seem to get as crowded/chaotic as some of the more touristy spots, and you can probably see and accomplish everything that you want to do here in a few hours. The apple crisp, cider donuts, and apple cider are all really good here. The donuts are still warm if you get them on a weekend. The only downside is that you have to wait in a long line to order your donuts and then wait another 30 minutes or so for your donuts to be ready. They sell the apple crisp + cider inside separately, so if your group wants one of each your best bet is to split up and wait separately otherwise you'll be spending a good chunk of your day waiting in lines. Apple picking here is decent, not the greatest, but the trees are labeled properly and the paths are well maintained. I've had no issues filling a bag of healthy apples. There is also a hayride that brings you to and from the apple orchard but I believe you have to pay for it. They have some animals that you can see, a pumpkin patch, and a corn maze. The corn maze is the perfect size IMO. It's not too big where you could be lost for hours, but its challenging enough for 30 minutes or so which is good for kids.

Sugaring off is a quintessentially New England activity. Normally I wouldn't offer this as something to do in mid-February. Maple sugar weekend is usually in mid March. But, I read an article in The Union Leader written by Allegra Boverman. She titled her piece, " The sap is running at Babel's Sugar Shack". This is how I discovered Jeff and Paula Babel's Sugar Shack! This is a small, wood fired maple sugar producer located at 323 Hurricane Hill Rd in Mason NH. The Babels (pronounced Bay-bell) are both wonderfully friendly, knowledgeable, and interesting to converse with! Jeff is passionate about maple syrup and is happy to share his wealth of knowledge. We viewed the entire maple barn, equipment, and enjoyed all Paula and Jeff shared with us about their maple syrup production. They have a shop behind the sugar shack where maple syrup, candies, and other delights are for sale. The sugar shack is very new and clean. The equipment is gleaming stainless steel. The shop is super welcoming with tables and chairs for customers to sit and enjoy treats. Babel's is an award winning maple syrup producer! Most recently they won second place in the NH Maple Producers Association Carlisle Award competition! They were competing against the best of the best and won second place! If you go to their Facebook page you can see the other awards they've won, including Best Sugarhouse in 2021 from WMUR! Babel's Sugar Shack LLC has earned the New Hampshire Seal of Quality from the NH Dept of Agriculture! They have an adorable, young golden retriever, Winnie; she is happy to greet you and loves to chase snowballs! We purchased two containers of dark amber syrup because we love super maple-y maple syrup! The Babel's are readying the sugar shack for Maple Weekend this year, March 16 and 17! I called ahead to make sure they were really open. Even though they weren't making syrup today it was still a wonderful outing! I highly recommend visiting Babel's Sugar Shack, if not for award winning syrup, then go for the lovely ambiance and great conversation!

For the first three weeks, they had no idea who I was, and I had to argue with the attendant about how I had already purchased a CSA. At least then, the attendant got to know me and after a few weeks had it straightened out with a CSA share ready for me to pick up. For the last six weeks though, there is never a CSA share prepared... instead the new attendant tells me that I can pick anything from the store up to $20. Except not the breads. Or any of the jams or jellies. Or the flowers. Or the pickles. So not 50% of the store. I can pick from the meats and the veggies... which in theory would be ok... except that by the time I get there in the evening, it's all pretty picked over, and there's little left except bruised and stunted leftovers. In addition, the share they put together the first few weeks was a lot bigger than the $20 allotment they're telling me I can have now. The whole point of a CSA is that I get a SHARE of the harvest! That's the agreement! That's why it's a preorder! I should be able to come after work, pick up my sectioned off share, and be out of there in 5 minutes, not spend 20 minutes trying to pick through what's leftover after a busy day. I feel ripped off and duped, since I specifically did not choose the voucher system because I know I can't get to the stand until the end of the day, and I knew I would be left with just leftovers if I was left to choose for myself. Calling the business line gets you nowhere. No one ever picks up. This place is great if you're just stopping by, early in the day, while the pickin' is still good. But avoid the CSA. Their pick-it-yourself patch might be great. But late in the day? Or using the CSA? Go somewhere else.

This is Townsend at its best! * We walked around and around and around and found several candidates.. we wanted a large tree (bring your measuring tape).. they didn't mind that it took us 1 hour to find a tree.. yes we were picky... * Found one ... and got assistance from the very friendly attendant driving the tractor (he might of been owner's son or relative).. very attentive and professional * They wrapped the tree up for us, twine is provided.. paid with the lovely and friendly ladies in the store and were off... * Lots of crafts and other things in the store as well. The tree is absolutely lovely and healthy! It drinks a large container of water a day.... very natural.. I'm just thrilled this year! From our experience in 2015.. we threw our tree out in our yard for composting after Christmas and it was green still all winter.. our neighbors store bought tree went BROWN a week after New Years! It looks like they have more tree fields just outside the barn growing too for future picking! A++

They will respond to emails within a day or two, so be patient. Their operation is top notch and Covid-careful. You sign up in advance to either tag your tree (October to early November) or to select your tree for them to cut down for you. The pre-tagged trees are all in a particular area, so there are plenty remaining for those of us who don't think of it until Thanksgiving, including 9 foot and higher, as well as loads of smaller trees. And since they cut for you, the pre-tagged trees are saved for the people who tagged them. To cut a large tree, you walk down the road and down a path (yes it's a bit of a walk) to the taller tree area with a flag on a stick to summon the staff once you find your tree. A friendly guy comes by in a cart to cut down the tree (and yes there is a label and number that matches your ticket so no trouble picking it up), then you hike back to the little barn where your tree is already baled and ready for your car. They will help place the tree on top of your car and provide twine for you to tie it on. The staff are super friendly, including the grandpa who showed me the epic "horn" they sell to let you water your tree from 4 feet above. The "workforce" at the baling station includes some school-aged kids who are earnest and helpful. And in the barn (open only to pre-signed up folks to avoid crowding) they sell not only a small selection of cute homemade quilted items and holiday decorations, but maple syrup and their own scrumptious blueberry jam - made with wild blueberries right at their farm. Well worth the drive out to Townsend.
