I was driving from the DMV to Atlanta and decided to check this place out. I ordered 4 piece chicken with hush puppies from the drive through. The chicken was perfectly seasoned and I couldn't stop eating the hush puppies. In other words the food was on point!!! I will definitely stop again on my way back!!! read more

Smithfield's is about as Eastern North Carolina as they come. I stopped in on my way home from a trip up north and couldn't wait to get some authentic Eastern North Carolina-style barbecue. The restaurants are very consistent in their Carolina-style design--homey, comfortable, and straightforward. The wall art adds character and reinforces the local feel without being overdone. The staff was very friendly and attentive, making sure every need was met. I ordered the large BBQ plate with slaw and baked beans. A generous portion of hushpuppies was sprinkled on top. The pulled pork is seasoned in classic Eastern North Carolina barbecue fashion--thin, tangy, vinegar-forward, and lightly seasoned. That same vinegar-based sauce is on the tables, along with Texas Pete. The portion size on the large platter was substantial enough that I asked for a to-go box and took leftovers home. Since they offer banana pudding--a North Carolina favorite of mine--I ordered one and enjoyed it there. The 'Nilla wafers are mixed directly into the pudding, exactly where they belong. I don't even know where to begin this review, this place is absolutely fantastic!! What's so great about this place? - everything!! You walk in and you're warmly greeted, you notice how clean the place is, and of course you smell that great fried chicken - which is why I'm here! The front of house staff are really pleasant, whether it's taking your order or giving you complimentary drink refills. The chicken- amazing - great breading with just the right amount of salt, and always freshly fried even if that you'll need to wait for a few minutes for the latest batch. I ordered the chicken and shrimp combo. The line was long but quick, we came in with a busload of men and a sprinkle of wives who were attached to the hip of their husbands. Anyway, the service was quick and the food was hot! The chicken was seasoned, crispy, hot and delicious. The shrimp were itty, bitty, baby shrimp like you would find in a cheap shrimp fried rice. Hot fires and sticky baked beans. Overall I give this meal a 6 out of 10. The service here was exceptional, fast, polite, and service at your table! Nice family restaurant, right off the exit. This BBQ is flavorful ,moist and delicious. The baked beans are excellent as is the coleslaw. My hubby said the potato salad was good. The service is excellent. We were in and out fairly quickly. The decor is old movie stars pictures on the walls and nice old music playing. The workers at this location were very quick to serve you and they were busy. This place was packed, yet the servers had smiles for all and were very nice. This is s great place to eat. Stopped on our way to Durham. Ate at the hotel so I didn't get any pictures, but everything was very good. The service is definitely what made me give it a 5-star rating. The girl at the window was very friendly and accommodating! We had to make a change to our order and she was so polite about it. We liked our entrées. The barbecue was very good and the chicken strips are working, juicy and humongous. The hush puppies were tasty, but we weren't such a fan of the potato salad, which we both thought was too sweet and for some reason my boyfriend did not like the coleslaw. This is the go-to place for real country homestyle meals. My favorite item on the menu is the full-size bag of Fresh Skins for a nice price of $5.99 per bag. You won't find Fresh baked Skins anywhere that is cooked to perfection like it is at Smithfield. As far as I am concerned Smithfield Fresh Skins are a high-end delicacy. What hurts the most about the Smithfield Fresh Skins is when they have sold out for the day. To get them you have to get there early in the afternoon to avoid being disappointed when they have sold out. My next favorite food item is the chopped pulled Bar-B-Q. Tasty, tender, and full of sweet pork goodness. If you love country homestyle food then Smithfield is the place to get it. Just wasn't what I was expecting I guess. Fried chicken is great. Super crispy outside, super juicy inside. BBQ chicken I didn't enjoy consistency or taste. That's on me. Cole slaw was just ok. Hush puppies were good. Portions are very generous. Customer service was ok. Not friendly, but not impolite either. Floor was sticky and gross in many spots. Bathroom not really clean either. This location had the most courteous and kind employees I've interacted with in a very long time. Everyone was super friendly and kind. I stopped by to purchase 10 pounds of bbq and 4 pints of slaw. I requested several bags of pork skins however they did not have any at the time. The amazing manager, Ms. Seabrooks, asked if I had time to wait for her to get some prepared, and I said of course! Ms. Seabrooks was so kind to prepare the fresh pork skins for me. I was traveling to Maryland to visit relatives and they requested Smithfield's bbq and pork skins. My relatives loved all the food, but especially the freshly cooked pork skins. Thanks to Ms. Seabrooks and her staff for some delicious food. You are Awesome!!! So for a fast food place with chicken and barbecue in North Carolina, this place is pretty good. The cashier lady was not friendly at all, but the prices were pretty good. The person that brought us our food was actually really friendly and considerate, which was nice. Barbecue sandwiches Tasted pretty good, slightly dry, but not bad with a little vinegar sauce and the coleslaw. The kids chicken tenders were juicy on the inside, which they enjoyed. Smithfield's is always a quick stop to get good BBQ. I opted for my usual which is a Value Pack - a BBQ sandwich with coleslaw, hushpuppies instead of fries and a Sprite. I was disappointed that they were out of butter for my hushpuppies but the service was really good at this location. read more

We always stop in when we past by (going and coming), we've actually just make the hour long trip JUST to come here. This time we stopped going and coming from Charlotte. Passing through on our way back home from a trip and found this place just off the interstate. Absolutely phenomenal customer service. The potato salad was very good and their ranch was a perfect pairing to dip the hush puppies in. They have two types of sauce, one straight vinegar and another "red sauce" that's a little more thick. I liked the latter the best. The jumbo chicken tenders had a really good flavor on the skin and was a lot of meat. Great atmosphere. Service was above and beyond! We ordered at the counter and this nice young man brought out food out to the table and went back and got ketchup for us. The food however was mediocre. I ordered the regular bbq plate with potato salad and cole slaw. It also come with hush puppies. The bbq was good but i didn't care for either of the sauces so I ate mine naked. The potato salad is sweet and very watery. Same with the coke slaw. Very watery. The hush puppies tasted like sweet cornbread. Yuck!
