As you can see.....lies, followed by indifference and low grade hostility

We were excited for this stay, but that waned quickly Positive: it's a replica lighthouse, has a jacuzzi tub and room service from a decent restaurant is available. There is also a marina there if needed. You're not far from the James River bridge and most anything else in the Hampton Roads area. Negative: this is an expensive place to stay, especially on weekends; once you're past that, it expressly says "children are not permitted for overnight accommodations in this suite"......lies. We spent both nights up at random times due to a very unhappy infant (who wasn't supposed to be there in the first place). My other half was met with low grade hostility from the front desk staff the next morning when she brought it up. That pretty much killed us recommending it to other people or most likely coming back ourselves.

The view is everything!! I was a little disappointed in the dish I ordered because it was overrated. I ordered the Lasagna dish which was mostly cheese and not a lot of seafood and I don't recall there being much at all. The service was okay but with it being as hot as it was, we had to continue asking for water service. The fries came out cold and I ordered a drink that I didn't like and our waitress quickly took care of those issues for us. The view is absolutely amazing, especially at sun-down!!

We stayed here for the second time. The 1st time the 3rd floor King with oversized shower. The second time with a jacuzzi tub. Problem was the tub was way too small. I'm a bit taller and it was too short for me. Views are pretty, staff friendly. The balcony was very nice. The bed wasn't very comfy. Room was clean and spacious. My only knock is the CONSTANT air fragrance being blown in the lobby. We both have asthma/allergies. It gave us a headache. It gave my husband a runny nose. Not everyone can handle smells. When we checked out their were two infusers going. The smell seems to travel everywhere, on the towels, elevator.

Excellent service, great location, and phenomenal Oyster Rockefeller, ham sweet potato biscuits (ham rolls), flounder sandwich, and bourbon street chicken. the flounder was fresh and fried to perfection. The bourbon St chicken was well seasoned and large enough for two. the Oyster Rockefeller was just amazing with the bacon, spinach, and fresh oysters.

Heard great things about Smithfield Station and tried it for a special occasion. Beautiful views, great service, delicious food. Will be back as there are many more dishes to try.

View from our room--beautiful!

We had a pleasant one-night stay at the Smithfield Station Inn. The staff at the front desk were friendly and helpful. We stayed in the fly fishing room in the boardwalk cottage, which was well appointed and very clean. The view from our porch was so pretty! It was a bit too cold to enjoy it but there are chairs on the porch for nicer weather. We slept great on the very comfortable bed. We would stay here again. The inn loses a star because we realized when our neighbors arrived back home to their room (there are three in the cottage) that it had shockingly thin walls. We could hear every word and even the "plink" when they put their room key down on the table. Awkward! Also, while this wasn't noisy or bothersome to us, the bridge runs directly behind these rooms. I'm only mentioning because it was surprising!

BUT it wasn't good enough for us to go back. UNTIL tonight. We came out to Main Street for New Years dinner. The new local pub was full, the Wharf brewery was closed for a private event, and Taste of Smithfield was closed altogether for the holiday (fair enough). Smithfield Inn was the only other option so we figured we'd try it again. We were immediately greeted by the hostess and shown their special New Years menu. Menu looked fancy in terms of offerings but the prices were reasonable. I ordered the salmon and my hubby got the rockfish Wellington. Both were absolutely amazing! The meals came with soup, salad, and complementary champagne (New Years special). But the real star of the show were our main courses. Salmon was baked in parchment paper with two slices of lemon. I've never had such succulent salmon before! The favors of garlic and lemon were present without being overpowering. I would 1000% get this salmon again if it appeared on their regular menu. The rockfish Wellington was such a unique dish. The fish was buttery and flaky and the Wellington batter was light and crispy. The sides for both dishes was rice pilaf and roasted veggies. Couldn't get enough of the sides either, they were so flavorful! The head chef came out to speak with each the patrons as we finished with our main courses. He was so sweet and knowledgeable. He mentioned he had only been with the restaurant for two weeks and was working on revising their menus. The latest being for Sunday brunch, which he gave us a sneak peek of and looked so good! This was, hands down, a night and day different experience from 2022. We will definitely make Smithfield Inn a regular stop in our restaurant rotation on Main street. Highly highly HIGHLY recommend this place!

We were booked into the inn by a client who wanted to make our first visit to Suffolk a memorable one. The home is a true Southern belle - a grand dame of historic mansions. It has been so lovingly restored and is perfectly appointed. We had so much fun exploring every inch of the home and absorbing its character. The proprietor (and very talented chef) Ruth has mastered the art of hospitality, inviting us to truly make the home our own. She didn't mind one bit that we planted ourselves in the reclining leather chairs in the stately octagonal library with another couple and yakked enthusiastically until the wee hours. After a blissful night sleep, breakfast the following morning was a marvelous affair. We prepped a coffee for ourselves at the Nespresso machine (fantastic!) and meandered around the grounds until the heavenly smell of baking croissants lured us to the elegant, light-filled breakfast room. Usually an eat-and-run proposition for us, we lingered for over an hour enjoying the delectable food and the conversation with the other guests. The charm of the house and its gracious owner had worked its magic - we were refreshed, satiated and inspired. We departed with great reluctance but the spirit of the Truitt house hung about us for the rest of the day and onto the next as we traveled home. You do not want to miss this unique and unforgettable travel experience - 5 gold stars!!!

The mansion, built long ago, has been restored and updated in every category. I've stayed at lots of B&Bs to find them "charming but in need of modern updates." This place has that without losing its original charm from 1909. Because I'm here for work, I'm purposely spending all my time at the house when not on location and I love to be able to move from study to library to the atrium and other rooms in order to read and for a change of atmosphere. Every room is unique and has a story. You'll love Ruth who will make your stay feel like you've come home to the family estate. Breakfast is made to order and she loves knowing what you like. Casual and comfy. Two words to describe the experience in this amazing, palatial mansion.

The pictures online absolutely do NOT do it justice. Our family of 3 (2 adults and a teenager) spent EIGHT days at this B&B and the location was beyond expectation! This place is a nature lover's dream. We listened to red wing blackbirds, cardinals, and great crested flycatchers sing to us from the trees. A Momma turkey brought her line of tiny babies out to walk across the yard several days in a row. Little boxed turtles scuttled across the yard. Deer popped in and out, frolicking around the property throughout the day. We watched a bald eagle sit in the tree nearby. Fish would jump in the water, herons would dive in and kayakers and small fishing boats went floating by. The pool was beautiful and immaculately kept. We stayed in the two bedroom Roosevelt retreat. It was beautiful! Beds were incredibly comfortable and the rooms were very spacious. The shower had cascading upper showerheads and mid level jets (similar to a high end luxury spa I once visited in Arizona). There was a jetted tub, luxurious shower products, comfy robes and slippers. Rooms were made every day and we were left mints on our pillows. What we loved even more than the beautiful location was the owners themselves. Paige and Mark felt like family by the end of our stay (the kind of family you LIKE to spend time with). They were incredibly generous, thoughtful, and kind. We found ourselves lingering over breakfast with them because they were just such lovely people. They made suggestions on restaurants (including the half price fish and chips!), places to see, things to maybe avoid. Watching them in the kitchen was like having a personal chef for an amazing breakfast every single morning. Everything from eggs benedict, breakfast quesadillas to a traditional English breakfast - never the same thing twice. On our last day, Mark asked our son if he had any special requests and our son opted for a second round of Frank Sinatra's favorite breakfast sandwich (who knew - but it was AMAZING!). They even wrapped up our leftover breakfast food each day so we could snack on it later. They offered hot coffee and orange juice every morning. We also had access to coffee, tea and various tasty snacks throughout the day. I ate way too many yummy brownies and cookies, and my son inhaled Paige's banana muffins. She even made an extra batch so he could take some home on the day we left. This was Southern hospitality and high class luxury at it's finest. Everything about this place was top notch. It was actually HARD to leave because we loved Paige and Mark and their little slice of heaven so much. I cannot recommend this place enough!!

We were welcomed the moment we arrived, and that didn't change the whole time we were there. Our thanks to them for all the advice and help making our vacation a relaxing one. The room was, in short, gorgeous and spotless. No loaner beds for kids, but we just brought an inflatable one that was promptly ignored by our little one who preferred to join us in the comfy, king-sized bed. Can't say I blame her. The room had a full kitchen stocked with plates, pans, glasses, large mini-fridge, etc. We could see parked trains from the window, which made our daughter happy. the bathroom is big and also gorgeous (though as a practical matter a couple more hooks to hang up wet stuff would have been helpful). The hotel offers a complimentary breakfast of cereal, yogurt, and coffee, which was perfect for us. The bright breakfast area turns into a gathering space for the rest of the day, with games and a big section of wall set up for dry erase markers. If you want to go to the beach, they have beach chairs and towels you can borrow and outdoor showers if you want to avoid bringing sand into your room when you get back from the beach. If it's pouring rain, they have umbrellas you can borrow. (Did I mention the staff is awesome?) The beach is walking distance from the hotel, and we went there often. Lots of sand. Lots of beach, and plenty of room to set up and chill. The water is warm and shallow enough for a good distance out that it works well for kids. In town there's not a huge number of restaurants, so that kitchen came in handy. There is pretty a good ice cream shop though, and they do a baby cone for little ones. There's also a playground and park within walking distance of the hotel if you need a break from sandcastles and seashells. I'll also say that as a multiracial family we fit in around just fine. The 4th celebration was fun, with music, food, a fishing competition for kids, and fireworks. A crowd of people, but not overwhelming at all. Even though it was late enough we watched the fireworks from our hotel room (kind of awkward, but it worked), it was a lot of fun. So, both the town and hotel are recommended for a visit. Good times.

Having stayed at boutique hotels here and in the UK, the skimpy breakfast option provided was disappointing.....well, it was nonexistent. Cereal and fruit were empty. I don't expect a European spread, but a simple continental breakfast was, in fact, part of the reservation. We finally just left. Post-survey, nobody followed up. I made reservations for me and my friend. It was a lovely drive ... At first... the gps directions are awful. I was taken down a road which was designated as peace hill - but we ended up at a red house, no one there, then we called and got even worse directions. The woman on the phone told us to go by the "red hen house" and through the woods... it was barely a road, full of tree roots, dirt path, and rocky terrain. After a 1/2 hour, we finally made it and end up at the back of the building. Come to find out, if she had just told us to go back to the main road and keep going 1/4-1/2 or so, we'd see the other entrance to the main house. Not a great first impression. The grounds were lovely and the farm animals gave a pastoral vibe. Inside was pretty too, but we were led to a rather secluded back room full of wool and yarn. Not that it wasn't cozy, but quite different from the dozens upon dozens of tea rooms I've been to. The lady who was "minding the store" didn't seem like she knew what she was doing. It took ages to get our teas and the tea (earl grey) tasted bland and stale, the soup was a putrid green (inedible) and while we were waiting we heard her chatting on the phone. Anyway, she wasn't the owner, so maybe she was new or just helping out?? The tea tier arrived and it looked nice... the sandwiches were good, basic cucumber, egg salad, and a pesto, with a mini ham biscuit... the scones were not good - sorry - but they were served with loads of cream and jam yet they should be served plain and the "condiments" on the side. My friend who can't have the toppings and preferred a plain scone, asked for a plain one. The lady said it would take 20 minutes . Which it did, and longer. All and all, it wasn't a very relaxing experience. I took some nice pictures, and we enjoyed the surroundings, but the afternoon tea service itself was mediocre. Sadly, we were disappointed, and I really wanted to love this place since I had heard good things... I'm sure the bed and breakfast side of the experience is probably much better. The sheep, the goats, the wool, the crafts, the pasture raised products, the farm life... that is your best bet from the other reviews I've read, but maybe you'll have a better tea time than we had. We might have to give this place another try and see if it improves.
