This has become my preferred Long Island beach. What's that? Why is it my preferred beach you ask? Well... 1) Parking is $4 for Suffolk County Residents who have a Green Key! Green Keys are easily accessible... just bring proof that you're a resident to the building that's located next to the toll booths. I've been known to hit up the beach 3-4 times a week-- $4 makes it easy on my wallet. Without a Green Key, it'll cost you $9, which is still cheaper than parking at Robert Moses. I don't know where Jerry H. got $12 from? Maybe they've lowered it since last year? 2) It's "One of the World's Safest Beaches!" ...If you knew what I did for a living, you would know why this brings me great joy. 3) Socially responsible beach goers! Most people pick up after themselves AND... I once watched as an elderly man stopped in the middle of his swim to catch a Lay's Potato Chip bag that was floating around in the water. He then proceeded to get out of the water to place the trash in its proper receptacle! I think I fell in love. 4) Lots of food choices: The Beach Hut offers a pretty large selection of items on their menu. It's reasonably priced and reasonably portioned for beach food. They also serve alcoholic beverages! PLUS... there's always a Mr. Softee parked right in the parking lot. It's the perfect treat after a day of sun and surf! 5) It's far enough out east on the island to keep city people away! They can easily make it to Exit 38 on the LIE for Jones Beach, or be convinced to drive to Exit 53 for Robert Moses, but to drive ALL the way out to Exit 68 for Smith Point is preposterous to them. Camped here over Labor Day weekend and we had a blast. The beach is beautiful and clean. You can't beat the location. The reasons for not giving the camp grounds 5 stars (I wish I could give it 3 1/2) is because the camp sites are kind of tight. Because it's the beach, the land is flat and there are no trees separating the sites so your neighbors are really close. The other downside was the bathroom was without toilet paper often, and it was not very clean. This was the bathroom in the center of the camp ground and closest to the little camp store so it probably got used the most. However, the shower buildings were very clean and well kept. There is a shuttle available to take you to the public beach and Tiki Joes that came in handy. We definitely plan on returning. Ps - love that dogs are allowed in the beach! read more

OK, so today was a perfect June day, and I decided to take a ride out to Montauk and say hi to the lighthouse. Of course, being me, I got going too late in the morning, and ended up getting stuck in the Friday "lemmings steeplechase to the Hamptons" traffic. I have not one iota of patience for bumper-to bumper traffic at any time, but wasting a gorgeous afternoon in traffic is a sacrilege. So, I stopped at a diner, grabbed lunch, and headed back west on Sunrise Highway. I haven't been down to Smith Point in eons, so I decided to take a ride down there instead. Hopped on the William Floyd Parkway and headed south. I had in mind visiting the Flight 800 memorial, a slow cruise along the boardwalk of FINS, and maybe even going down to the waters' edge to check things out. Here's what stinks: parking is $10. If I were not still barely existing on unemployment, and I was planning on spending the day, I would have paid. Still wouldn't have been happy, but I would have paid. I know if I had bought an Empire Pass earlier in the season i could have parked today for nothing, but again, I've been unemployed. Question to the state: How come you don't want poor people at the beach? The end result is that I drove around a bit, and then went home to sulk. Maybe if I get another chance (after the paychecks start coming in) to get down there this summer, I will go back, and then revisit this review. As it stands now, I'm pissed. read more

I remember when there was more beach to this beach. Even as it has eroded away, I was still able to raise my children, taking them here. Inexpensive parking, reasonable refreshments, lobster specials in the evening, listening to bands play, outdoor shower, and the Flight 800 memorial. I have seen deer cross the bridge in the morning, and graze near where my car was parked. I had once gone four wheeling. And once we were stopped as we were leaving, for an alcohol check (we drank coke). Lots of memories, great beach! It's a shame how it has been affected by erosion. read more

awful ! beautiful beach. BUT. made camping reservation 3 months in advance for spot for my camper. When we did not come the first day, due to bad weather, then the next day had to work, when we called the 3rd day, they said, sorry we gave away your space. WHAT? I paid in advance, and they simply gave away my space. so I asked the lady on the phone, did anyone else not show up, we could take their space? oh, no..sorry...and btw, their reservation system is the WORRRSSSST ever...extremely annoying to deal with. Oh, and no refund. Now I know why my friends who camp recommend going to a privately owned facility, not a state or county facility. Guess that's what I could expect for a County run facility. I would give no stars if that was an option. GRRRR! read more

Ten years ago there was a lot more beach, the food was better, the parking fee was reasonable and the outer beach was more accessible. Today the food is "meh", the outer beach is closed much of the time and the parking fee is outrageous, ($15), I am a resident so I get a discount with my green card, but it's still lousy to pay that much money to go to a "public beach" and i feel sorry for those who don't have a discount The lifeguards are very good - they always have been, although I doubt they're being adequately compensated despite the obscene amount they charge now for parking and food. A business owner can run his business into the ground by reaping the profits and not re-investing/ keeping up with maintenance & making improvements accordingly. I like this beach because its closer, cheaper and not as touristy as westhampton beach. The class of people is definitely lower than what you'd find in the hamptons, but in a way thats good because you don't get all the snooty rich people all over the place. The only thing I don't like is that the beach is closed at night. Westhampton beach you can go at night and walk on the beach, here they have cops and you are not allowed on it. read more

I'm not from Long Island so this might seem like a stupid point but I never thought of New York having beaches. So when this obvious fact was shoved in my face, my mind was blown!! Being used to South Jersey shore towns (Ocean City, Wildwood etc) I thought I knew what a crowded beach was. Boy was I wrong. Even on a Wednesday, this beach was so packed that no matter where I looked there were PEOPLE. But the awesome thing was, it never seemed too much as the lifeguards were always opening up new towers so that the swimming areas kept getting expanded. Yay to not being on top of random strangers while in the ocean!! Plenty of parking with tunnels that go right under the main road for safe walking. There is a pavilion with a snack bar and restrooms right in the middle of the area. I feel like if I lived on long island I would definitely come here often. read more

I liked Nova G.'s review and liked this place. The beach was beautiful and the waves were really wild to the point that I saw a few people, myself included, get knocked down by the waves. Warning: If you are bringing little kids, like mine, then I would highly recommend you watch them constantly since the waves did take a pail and other misc sand toys never to be seen again. Fortunately, my kids stayed away, but there were a few times that the waves was so high that water reached them. My three star rating may seem unfair, but there was a few things that made me drop it down: - General Public=$15 parking fee. On the Suffolk County web site, it's still listed at $10. - The seagulls were out of control there and there was another group that made the mistake of leaving their food out and leaving their space unattended. Basically, it was a scene from The Birds. - The access to the beach is on one set of stairs and one side entranceway (the one opposite of the TWA memorial). The side entranceway isn't clear, but after you pay the parking fee, go to the end of the lot. If you don't do this, you end up walking through the sand and it is thick. read more

Came across this place while exploring Long Island. I thought I was at Fire Island Seashore (never been), but after some investigation, I realized I was only on a barrier beach of Fire Island (same water though). Either way, this place is pretty cool. On one side there is the Wilderness area, on the other side an expansive beach, lot's of people, umbrella's and seagulls, lots of seagulls. A little further down the beach there seemed to have been a restaurant, but I didn't make it down there. I spent a little while on the beach and in the water. Walked for awhile and found some really great shells and rocks and talked to a few people. Seems like a nice, unpretentious beach where you can surf, swim and relax. It was a great experience! The waves were a bit scary as was the undertow. The sand was clean and you could walk out into the water quite far without getting in too deep, maybe thigh/waist deep. No rocks or anything like that. Clean and beautiful beach that is pretty family oriented. A bit crowded for my tastes. A lot of children around, so beware, haha. My friend and I both got hit in the head by inflatable beach balls and frisbees, so choose a relatively emptier location to sunbath. This beach is not even worth the trip, 9.00'for a green key, and 18.00 for the day without one! The bathrooms were gross and disgusting! Plus the food and drinks were pretty pricey. I won't be coming back. read more

I just wanna say this place is very underrated my hubby and I never went here cause you can't smoke even tho we live 1 min away but the guy who runs it and his wife are sooooo amazing very personable and there rooms are to die for sooo nice the guy literally came to are door 2 seconds after walking in just to make sure the beds were comfy omg so sweet we been really missing out you guys have to come here wow And when I told him about the smoking he said you can smoke in bathroom let me tell you these people are amazing they actually care if you wanna come here and just have a one night stand or have fun with your wifey or hubby they understand a hotel is a hotel they got your back even tho my hubby and I are happily married I like how they say they won't give are info out so if you wanna cum f your side chic /dude this wonderful couple has your back or just get away from your kids dogs family they got you and it's right by the water I wish I came here long time ago other then going to midway or 112 hotel hell noooo guys this is the place to go they are amazing and the rooms are to die for just please respect them like they said smoke in bathroom and that is exactly what we did cause you don't f up something that is good ayyyyeeee read more

Went there yesterday because I didn't feel like dealing with the thots and tarts at Jones Beach (long story). The parking for non-residents is $15. Residents are $8. Fee is per car. I didn't like the cost; why do non residents have to pay twice as much? (We are Town of Babylon residents but we didn't have a Green Key---didn't even know that we could prove residency by showing a license. We just moved here two years ago but everything is still under our PA home. I, on the otherhand, have a NYS license so I could have saved us $7) Lots of parking available despite the crowded beach. My hubby had been there before, I hadn't, so I didn't know what to expect. The TWA800 memorial is nice. RIP to the victims. The boardwalk is gone. Hubby says that is a result of Hurricane Sandy. A lot of the erosion is apparent. The dunes are a short distance from the shoreline. The water comes up pretty far; three times we had to move back because the awesome waves came ashore. The beach is clean by NY standards with shells and kelp debris. I had a hard time finding a cigarette butt or food wrapper---and trust me I searched because I'm a smoker but I don't believe in subjecting people to my smoke, especially on the beach (please see earlier Jones Beach comments). Radios are allowed but I didn't hear any, which means that we were dealing with a reading crowd (signs clearly posted asking folks to respect the noise levels), and we were dealing with a respectful bunch. The beach was *LOADED* with kids (camp trip? pre-back to school crew? last hurrah college kids?) but no one was noisy or rambunctious. Nice beach neighbors, we had. They also had to move when the waves came in and we kicked up an awesome conversation. The Beach Hut has a lovely selection of seafood. I had fried scallops and fries; hubby had a cheeseburger and fries (yeah, at the beach...who does that?) The scallops tasted like the sea, which to me means fresh. It's a bit overpriced, in my opinion (the water is RIGHT THERE---no overhead, you'd think). THEY ONLY TAKE CASH! A band called Soul Patch--they play R&B, funk, soul--was setting up before we left. Seems that Friday evenings are fun there. Very family friendly and the restrooms are kept somewhat neat. The outdoor showers are a plus. I just hate having to trek through the tunnel to get back to the car (I'm spoiled--I'm used to Field 6 at Jones Beach) Fortunately, there's an ice cream truck (the light?) at the end of the tunnel! If the proceeds from the parking fees are going towards repairing/restoring the beach, then after this great experience, I don't mind paying. It's worth it! read more

I just don't understand. I arrived at the beach at 7:00 pm to watch the band and need to use the restroom that was closed for cleaning, that was fine. At 7:45 I returned to the restroom that was "supposedly cleaned and re- stocked to find in the stall thaI went into had only 1/2 of one roll in it, where 3 full rolls could have been added. I know three and a half rolls did not get used in 46 minutes. Is anybody managing the workers at this beach. I pay taxes. Even though you don't have to pay to get in after five, I frewuent this Suffolk County beach oaying20$ to spend the day. Y he least I should get is a properly maintained clean beach read more

This is a pretty good beach! The bathrooms could be cleaner and I mean really cleaner by the campgrounds. It grosses me out to use the sinks because the sinks are growing mold. When I am camping and I pick people up from the parking lot and bring them in, it is very annoying that I have to be sure to bring them back to the parking lot by 10:00 PM or else they will get a ticket. I think that is messed up. Now with the positives. It's very nature friendly and no matter what campsite you get you will have a view of the water. I like that I can just bring my kayak to the bay side and just go around there and have some fun. The beach hut is really nice and they always have a good band playing there. And the Atlantic side of the beach is actually pretty clean, the water is clean and there isn't too muck litter. It's actually my favorite place to camp! read more

Let me start off by saying this the best motel I have ever stayed at. Excellent service, with workers who you can tell take a lot of pride in the work. Now let me take a second to talk about the location of this place. The location is absolutely incredible; it is right next to the beach, and a matter of minutes away from any restaurant imaginable. From what I have heard, the old owners of this place were not so good, but the new owners have made a complete 180 degree turn around. I am someone who usually is very skeptical about sleeping in motels because of all the news articles about them not being cleaned properly, but these rooms are newly renovated, and spotless. May I also add that these rooms are inexpensive, they are absolutely underpriced, I mean talk about bang for buck! read more

My favorite Long Island beach. It is so close to my house, they have a Beach Bar Hut all summer long with free music and fresh seafood!! The beach itself is beautiful, the waves are great!! There is a campground right there and the best part of this beach is the outer beach where you can drive onto and hang out if you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Don't miss the Flight 800 Memorial - it's beautiful and moving! read more

Smith Point is one of the best beaches on Long Island. It's sandy, unlike the rocky beaches on the north shore, so you can go around barefoot. There is a fee for parking, which is ridiculous. As a long time, diehard fan of Beach Hut, I was counting down the days until the start of summer and the beginning of Beach Hut season. Sadly, our experience on Day 1 of the summer season had us counting down the minutes until we left. Overpriced beverages, inedible food, poor customer service, and a readily apparent corner-cutting attitude have turned the restaurant that we loved for years into just another subpar beach dive. The new management has abandoned what made Beach Hut a staple of our summer fun in favor of a low budget, low quality approach at higher prices. Two plates of cold rigatoni with an obviously canned sauce, $15 specialty drinks reminiscent of cough syrup, and fish that had a freezer burnt aftertaste collectively sent us back to the car early in desperate search of something to take the taste, both literally and figuratively, out of our mouth. If you're looking to be disappointed on a summer night in Eastern Long Island, then the new Tiki Joe's is for you. read more

After checking other reviews on Smith Point Beach Park, we decided to take the ride to exit 68 on the LIE for some fun in the sun at Smith Point Beach Park. After all, one reviewer stated that the city people would never travel that far. Little did she know. What we found was that the beach was overcrowded and the lifeguards were rude to other beach goers (one guy's blanket was wet, and he hung it over the lifeguard chair that was not in use - see the pictures - that's what it looked like - the lifeguard came over, the guy stated it was his and the lifeguard proceeded to throw the wet blanet in the sand). It was totally uncalled for. He thought he was the king of the beach. Also, I found that ladies room to be somewhat dirty. I say for all the people from the city, either go to the Brooklyn Beaches, Rockaway or Jersey. It's a much better atmosphere. At least the lifeguards are nice and they act like professionals. read more

If you live out this way seems like a decent beach. The beach hut had a full bar and ice cream counter along with the usual fried and raw fare one expects at the beach. Huge parking lot informs you of the crowds And traffic that are possible. Didn't experience too much difficulty with either. The beach is a little dirty, Capri sun pouches and corona caps washed on shore and people smoke... Large bathrooms are relatively clean. One thing this beach gets 4 stars for is the lifeguards. They are all smoking hot, men and women and look fit as phuk. Take a few minutes to watch the surfers. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here but if you are close check it out! read more

Great spot with live music, clean beach. Overall fun! Just minutes away from Mastic Beach

One of my favorite beaches in LI. Large parking lot, although the walk is a little long. But still not as bad as Jones Beach field 2. I love that they pretty much have live music throughout the day and some evenings. They have different festivities at night, such as lobster night, Italian night ect. The facilities are clean. Food is the usual average expensive beach food. The sand is clean, and unlike other beaches, people aren't on top of you and blaring their music. The water is super clean, with some decent waves. They also have the Flight Memorial that crashed on the beach, a site definitely worth paying tribute too. My only complaint is parking has gotten so ridiculous. It is now up to $18. read more

Great place to go for a nice beach. Every year for the past five years, I've been making this beach my start to the summer beach. I love to go in the morning or early afternoon. Its best to go befor the crowds. Parking chrge is a bit much but hey it helps for something there. read more

Smith Point is a great beach for families. You cannot bring anything into the water, such as boogie boards, but it is a very safe beach. The life guards are vigilant. Without any passes, parking is $12, at least as of 8/24/2011. Most people clean up after themselves, but it can get a little dirty with used food packaging and assorted litter. There are many seagulls and they get extremely close, especially at the snack bar. read more

Came from California to go one the hike to the breach. My experience was over shadowed by the female usfs ranger that's short with curly black hair. She had zero guest service skills. Screaming at people from the deck then openly starts complaining about what the people were doing in front of other guest. Clearly someone doesn't enjoy their job anymore. Instead of enlightening the guest like a ranger should do she was demeaning and rude. I would pass on going here again. read more
