I had a home warranty issue with our water heater slightly leaking and the company directed me to local contractor Smith Mechanical. Based on the other reviews on here, I was VERY afraid of the quality of service. I left a voicemail and they called back within 2 hours to schedule the apt for several days later. They came out, replaced a metal pipe plug with some quick welding work after quickly identifying the issue and were out in less than 30 min, problem solved. David Smith came to my home on behalf of the home warranty company. Ultimately trying to get the warranty company to charge me an astronomical amount to replace a water heater. He also tried to tell me that my family and I were drinking contaminated water because my " geothermal system and hot water heater were incorrectly hooked up." I personally believe he is extremely rude and unprofessional, and does not have the knowledge when it comes to things such as geothermal. We had three separate licensed plumbers come out after David was here to ensure us that everything is hooked up correctly and to code - we are not drinking contaminated water. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. He exaggerated the amount of work that needed to be done, which would have cost me more out-of-pocket. Typical scammy contractor. 0/10 We ultimately got our deductible back from the home warranty company (after explaining David's lack of professionalism and his exaggeration on the work that needed to be completed) and chose a reputable/HONEST plumber for the job. read more

Cinch Home Warranty Company sent a rip off company by the name of Smith Mechanical from Covington Ky. to my house for a hot water heater not working. David Smith responded and took one look at the unit and said it needs replacing and is still under manufacture warranty and refused to touch. Therefore I had to pay another 150.00 for another company to come and light the pilot light. It turns out all Smith Mechanical technician had to do was just light the pilot. Also their customer service is horrible. I'm a senior citizen and it cost me $300 to get a pilot light lit. Avoid them at all costs. read more

Via my research teams findings this company has been developing a pattern of over diagnosis of jobs such as water heater replacements, the added cost for things such as shut off valves or replacement of flu's costs the customer double the amount resulting in the company receiving a larger profit. I would like for anyone to Find me and please contact me if this has happened to you, I had a reputable company come to my home 24hours before Dave K. Smith came out diagnosed multiple things that were checked professionally, he states these items need to be replaced/repaired again raising the cost of the job drastically but the work load minimally. read more

The worst customer service ever! Avoid at all costs. Was assigned them by our Home Warranty Company. Submitted costs to Warranty Company that were not performed to drive up the cost. When asked about it he quickly tried to cover up. They had concrete pad listed - no concrete was poured. Ect - Ect - Ect. Very rude when asked simple questions. This company was sent to my house by a home warranty company to address a leaking hose faucet that flooded my basement. The plumber showed up to my house and spent about 2 minutes "diagnosing" the issue and took payment and left. He reported to the warranty company that the leak was happening outside of my house (mind you water was clearly entering my house from an internal pipe visible to even an untrained eye) therefore the warranty company wouldn't cover the issue. After spending hours on the phone I decided to fix the pipe myself. In doing so, I easily found the crack and fixed the issue for a fraction of the deductible cost. This "business" is what gives tradesmen a bad name. He either lied or is so incompetent at his job that I was put in a position to deal with the water damage and cracked pipe myself. Avoid this company at all cost. They will scam you of your deductible payment and not work to fix the problem. They need to be put out of business and charged for fraud or negligence. They do not have your best interest in mind and must operate entirely on taking deductibles and not performing work. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I had a terrible experience with Smith Mechanical Company. They were sent to inspect a sink faucet leak through my home warranty company. They looked at the sink for less than 10 minutes and deemed the leak was an issue with the dishwasher hose and made a note in the report submitted to the home warranty company as "dishwasher hose not installed correctly". We had a dishwasher repairman sent out later that week. He did a much more diligent review and inspection and ran 2 drain cycles on the dishwasher and confirmed with me watching that the dishwasher hose or any dishwasher components were NOT the source of the leak. He showed me the leak coming from the faucet itself. My home warranty company will not re-send out a service provider to fix the faucet leak because of Smith Mechanical's note about the dishwasher hose. I called Smith Mechanical to politely let them know that in the future they should not write down statements like "dishwasher hose not installed correctly" without properly confirming this, because that note caused me to waste $275 and still have a leaking faucet. When I tried to provide that feedback the Smith Mechanical employee hung up on me. I will never work with this company again and will never advise this company to anyone. read more

Avoid at ALL COST. Our home warranty works with Smith Mechanical. Smith was sent out to give us an estimate on our hot water heater. Smith wrote an estimate for hundreds of dollars worth of work not covered by our warranty they claimed we needed before they would do the warranty work. Sears wouldn't allow a second opinion so we were stuck paying hundreds to Smith before using our warranty or accepting a check for what Smith estimated was the cost of the warranty work. It should come as no surprise that Smiths estimate for the the warranty work was significantly less than the up front work Smith wanted out of pocket. We paid out of pocket for a second opinion that acknowledged the same need for a replacement hot water heater part as Smith (and our original need for repair) but they didn't quote the hundreds of dollars for additional unrelated repairs. The actual hot water heater repair was a fair price that was more than Smith's estimate for warranty work. We paid out of pocket for the work done by the second opinion and we have a working hot water. We won't renew the sears home warranty and we leaned our lesson. We also won't ever deal with or recommend Smith Mechanical. We emailed Smith Mechanical to address the issue and were sent threats of lawsuits in response. Definitely a good sign of a reputable business. read more

Our toilet was leaking around the base when flushed and our faucets in our master bath were leaking at the base so I contacted 2-10 Home Buyers Warranty which in turn turned our claim over to Smith Mechanical Plumbing/Hydronics. We were told by Smith that a representative would come to our home to check out the situation first before actually doing any work. When the tech arrived I showed him the toilet and he asked me to flush it. When he saw the toilet flush he said the way that the toilet flushed led him to believe that maybe something was stuck in the pipes although we have never had any problems with the toilet backing up. Then he indicated that it would probably need to have a camera inserted in the pipe to see whether there was something there but that Smith did not do that type of work. He took a picture then asked to see the faucets. He asked where the faucets were leaking and I showed him that they were leaking around the base. He said that that indicated that the faucets were old and the insides were worn out and the faucets needed to be replaced. Again he took pictures and said he would submit them to the insurance company. He then asked the the $100 fee. That was the last we heard from Smith Mechanical. When we reached out to the warranty company we were told that Smith Mechanical indicated that our faucets were installed improperly and that the claim was denied. We have tried on numerous occasions to reach out to Smith Mechanical and we have not received a call back. I would not recommend this company! read more

Smith Mechanical was assigned to me by my home warranty company. There service tech came out to look at my water heater. Other than taking a few pictures & spraying soapy water on my gas lines he didn't inspect anything. They wanted to replace the WH in lieu of servicing it since it was still under warranty and suggested that we lie to the warranty company so that they would replace it. The warranty company was smarter than this and figured out the WH is under warranty. Now I'm starting over from scratch with the warranty company to get my water heater serviced by a company authorized to handle the manufacturer's warranty service calls. And as far as I can tell Smith Mechanical is two guys named Mike and Dave. read more

I wish that i would have read reviews prior to allowing my home warranty company to send them to my house. They spent 3 minutes at house, wrote an estimate that was more than $1500 above what warranty company pays for the hot water heater. When I called to question the quote, he refused to return my calls and ultimately refused service through my warranty company without notifying me. Unfortunately, this company and the warranty company(Sears Home Warranty) have the system down to cover the least amount under warranty and force the customer to may a lot out of pocket and if they don't; he will refuse service. Once I emailed him and told him that I would not be recommending his company to anybody I work with or associate with he threatened to sue me. Zero stars (or negative) should be a choice, because these guys earn it. My home warranty folks sent them out due to a leaking toilet. They sent a guy out who took about 4 pictures and said they'd submit the findings to the warranty folks and collected $100. The issue was not covered under the warranty (which I understand). None the less I asked to have Smith make the repairs, thinking the $100 would be applied to the cost of repairs (which is normal for most trades). Smith told us they were too busy to make the repairs. We had to call another plumber (Pioneer Plumbing - very good by the way) who made the repair in less than 2 hours charging $125. The reason Smith was "too busy" in my opinion? They already made $100 for taking pictures, so the actual repairs would of only made them another $25. Avoid these guys like the plague. read more

Update: The next day there was some small leaking. Called Warranty company again, found out flushing WAS covered under the warranty but they wouldn't send a different company out, so Smith came back. Said I needed a new hot water heater, told me how I needed all these things that wouldn't be covered by warranty. Gave warranty company an estimate, and I would have paid another $500 out of pocket after warranty paid their part - and another $200 on top of that to remove the old hot water heater. Called another company (Jolly Plumbing) to get an estimate. Total price $843, including removal. All covered under warranty. Since they weren't contracted with HMS I had to pay it out of pocket and get reimbursed but instead of paying $700, I paid $0 after the reimbursement. like many of these other people, I fell victim to Smith's ineptitude and unprofessionalism while dealing with them as contractor for my home warranty. On WED, June 16rth, Cinch sent Smith Mechanics as a contractor out for an inspection and he filed his report. On thursday, June 17th my wife (her phone number associated with the cinch account) called them 6 times with no response  and 3 times on Monday, the 21st of June. They failed to contact us back. No one contacted us to tell us the claim was denied or what issues the contractors found. In Indiana, hot water is considered an essential service.  This is troubling as we have a household of five. This includes 2 children, ages 6 and 3, as well as a disabled OIF Veteran (90% service connected) as the head of household.  After my wife tried to call them on the 17th and was ignored, I called from a different number and they answered promptly but was rude when confronted with ignoring our calls and informed me that the claim was denied because there was high pressure due to an improperly installed pressure valve. He also stated that he was doing us a "favor" by stopping outside his service area. I called Cinch and they verified that the reason for denial. Why would a company go outside their service area with no intention of completing the job (we still needed the service regardless of wether the home warranty paid for it or not)? Thinking it was weird that no one was following up so we could get hot water back on, we went ahead and hired Arlinghaus to come and take a look.  Arlinghaus came today, June 23rd, and fixed our issue. They explained what was wrong and verified that all plumbing components were properly installed and that the issue was a wear and tear issue with the pressure valve inside the house Their findings did not support the denial claim reasoning that there were "improperly installed components" as stated by Smith Mechanics and, subsequently,  Cinch Home Warranty. I have open claims with both Cinch and Smith's now. Worst customer service I've ever received. I went through my home owners warranty to schedule an appointment. Apparently the appointment I was given was unavailable so I had to pick a day that was more convenient for them. 45 minutes before my new appointment I got a call from smith mechanical asking me to reschedule because the plumber that was going to come to my home was "sick". When I refused, all of a sudden I was able to keep the appointment and they decided to send a different plumber. Originally I was quoted a 4-5p arrival time. So while on the phone, I asked if the new plumber could show up at 4:30p and the representative told me "that was pushing it." I reminded him that my quote time to begin with was 4-5p and he agreed to 4:30p. Upon his arrival around 4:45p, the appointment felt rushed and he mentioned his boss wanted him to get back. when I made my claim, I said I had issues with my master shower and 2nd bathroom toilet. He hastily looked at the shower and told me they didn't have the part for it in stock without even knowing what kind of part I needed...maybe he's a magician? Then after telling me repeatedly they don't handle stoppages (my toilet is flushing slowly), he said well I have some time to check out the toilet. After looking at it, apparently whatever was stuck in the pipes passed, but he mentioned if the problem persists they CANNOT fix it. Why look at the toilet in the first place if it's something you can't fix? Makes you wonder... After they replace the part in my shower I will never be using them again. 2 thumbs way down! read more

After a sewage backup in our basement, we were told by our home warranty company that we had to use Smith Mechanical for our plumbing needs in order for it to be covered. We called their 24 hour emergency line, only to get a voice mail message instructing us to leave our name and number and someone would contact us within 24 hours. 72 hours later, they still have not contacted us, and if we hadn't called a different plumber, we'd still be sitting in a puddle of sewage. I really can't rate their performance, since they utterly failed to perform. If we were in a position where waiting 24 hours was a viable option, why would we be calling their 24 hour emergency number in the first place? read more

Smith Mechanical is a good , no nonsense plumbing company, I beg to differ with the previous post. I too have a home warranty, and home warranties are what they say that they are, the more you pay them, the more benefits and coverage you will receive from them. I had a problem with my water heater as well, and Smith Mechanical was assigned to me by my warranty company. Yes the technician DID take pictures, and he also checked my gas lines before any work was started. Lo and behold he found (2) gas leaks, which I promptly paid him to fix. The water heater was installed that same day as well. In conclusion, some CHEAP HOME OWNERS purchase these home warranites, and expect the warranty companies to correct code violations and basically rebuild their houses for them....and when their claim is denied, they quickly blame the contractor. they should really learn to read their contracts CAREFULLY! read more

The service technician was at our home about 15 mins, took pictures, asked for the $100 deductible and proceeded to tell us that someone from our HWC would call us tomorrow (mind you we have been without hot water for 5 days at this point)! Like many others the home warranty company sent out Smith Mechanical to deal with a water leak from my bath tub. The plumber they sent spent 5 minutes taking some pictures and didn't really tell me anything. It turns out after talking to the warranty company, he wrote a very detailed description about how some of the plumbing wasn't up to code and refused to do the work. I called a different company and they found and fixed the broken pipe in about an hour. I would give less stars if possible. read more

If I could give less than 1 star, I would. This company is extremely incompetent. They were assigned to me by my home warranty company as well to inspect a leak underneath the kitchen sink. When the technician arrived he demanded his $100 immediately , performed a quick inspection under the sink and determined the leak to be coming from behind the wall. They said the cabinets would have to be removed but that they would not be able to perform that service and we would have to hire someone else. After consulting another (competent) company we determined the leak to be coming from a valve that just needed to be tightened under the sink. The warranty company confirmed Smith's incompetence by refunding the hundred dollars. So anyone reading this review who is out $100 to Smith mechanical complain to the warranty company and try to get your money back. It is possible. HORRIBLE - do not use! Smith was assigned to us by our warranty company as well. First of all, they do not answer the phone. Ever. And they don't return calls. After my warranty company called them for me twice, they finally called me and told me they would have someone out within an hour - I was at work - good thing my husband was home! We paid our $100 deductible only to find out the service wasn't covered under the warranty. So I called Smith and left a message to call me back to schedule the service anyway. Waited three hours, no call. Called again and left a message, no call. Three more hours and I had my husband call and leave a message. No call. Finally decided to eat the $100 and go with someone who actually answers the phone. Ridiculous. read more

Useless. I got suck with them because of my HMS warranty. They insisted on coming out even after I told them the leak wasn't exposed and then told me they couldn't do anything because exposing the leak wasn't covered. Then gave me horrible advice about how to proceed next. read more

Buyer Be Warned...After a hot water heater issue, this company was assigned by our home warranty company to provide service. The dispatcher who set up the appointment instructed us that the plumber would "take down the model number, serial number and do a brief diagnosis and...(most importantly) collect the check for the deductible." He instructed that it would likely be a few days before they could get parts for the repair (without ever seeing the water heater). After the plumber was over an hour late without a phone call, he was in the house for 3 minutes including the time required to write a check. His determination: the water heater was old, the gas valve was bad and the water heater would most likely need to be replaced because parts would most likely not be available. The plumber was rude and refused to phone the authorization center for the warranty company as they asked me to have him do in order to expedite the claim. His excuse: "If I call at this time of day, I'll wait for an hour to talk to a person. It's faster to go back to the office and file the claim online." Which, the warranty company had stated that filing online would delay the claim. After complaining to the warranty company about the plumber's behavior, rudeness and his lack of evaluating any issues with the water heater, they have now assigned the claim to Home Depot who was able to fix the problem same day. Significant thanks to KW Mechanical who spent an hour diagnosing the problem, determined it was NOT the gas valve but was a dirty and misaligned burner causing the problem. He then cleaned the burner, realigned it and we had hot water back immediately. I wish I would have found the comments on Yelp before I every allowed Smith Mechanical in my house. read more

Smith mechanical was also assigned to me by my home warranty company. They decided we needed a new water heater and that was covered by our warranty. They took our $100 deductible check and said they would be back Friday to replace WH. On Friday after several calls to them and warranty company they said Monday was the best they could do. I called them back again to beg for the WH so I did not have to go all weekend without hot water and Dave yelled at me repeatedly that it was my insurance companies fault, not his. I had enough and hung up. Within 2 minutes Dave called my husband and said find another company because he was "not dealing with your wife," mind you he already cashed my $100 check. After several calls to the insurance, they made them replace the WH. The day of the service my dad (a plumber himself) was there with the extra needed parts and such and they refused to use them or let my dad install it himself. We had to pay them an extra $220 over the deductible for parts my dad purchased at Home Depot for less than $30 bucks. They also wanted $175 to haul the WH away! We took it to the local recycling center ourself and they gave us $10 bucks for it! These guys were jokes and are totally running a scam to people who have the cost of the WH covered by the insurance. read more
