Banks and Son-BUILDERS

Banks and Son-BUILDERS

Sam Banks Jr will charm you and give you a very fair quote- it might even seem like a steal. Don't…read moretake it. We hired Banks and Son to redo our shower and the lack of attention to detail was atrocious. The final product was sloppy, there were cracked tiles left on the wall, our shower door was installed slanted leaving a large gap at the bottom, the grout was cracked, and there were parts of the shower that were left unsealed. When I emailed Sam about these issues, he was aggressive, misogynistic, and dismissive. He told me the shower door slanted because I didn't get a custom one, the grout came up because I was cleaning wrong, and that glass tiles break and are a poor choice (um you could have mentioned that- but also Reddit exists and they in fact do not crack when you install correctly). We love a paper trail though, thanks Sam. After a few exchanges- his assistant came over and I showed him the worst part of the job-THE DIVOT IN THE FLOOR WHERE WATER POOLS- and told him if he didn't fix all the other issues I'd have them rip up the marble and redo the floor. Magically, all the issues Sam said were my fault got fixed. We had another contractor re- grout our floor after Sam's second chance because it was still coming up. They also cracked a floor tile and just didn't mention it... We planned to use him for our other bathroom but were done after the shower. The grout on our walls still comes off it you rub it with your finger... 0/5 stars

We worked with Banks & Son in 2021 to renovate our first floor. From the very beginning, Sam Banks…read morewas responsive, helpful, and courteous. When I contacted him, he replied the same day, offering references from recent jobs, and was flexible as to meeting time. Throughout construction he was hands-on with his workers and met weekly with us and our architect to make sure everything was going smoothly. When we ran into problems like very old plumbing or supply chain issues Sam promptly provided options to solve the issue. His workers were tidy, competent, and professional. It was obvious that they had good communication with Sam and his foreman. We were dubious about being able to renovate during a pandemic, but Sam was very well connected with suppliers and when there was a backorder (specifically, there were supply chain problems with procuring cabinets) he was very flexible about making deliveries and finishing up around our schedules. In the end, the finished product is GORGEOUS. Sam and his crew produced a beautiful, well-crafted, renovation for a reasonable price with minimal disruption to our family. They gutted the kitchen, knocked down a wall to join it with the dining room, raised the floor in the den, created two new doorways to improve flow through the entire first floor, and put down new, hardwood flooring throughout. They also installed a gas line, moved radiators, replaced antiquated pipes, created a special alcove for a treasured neon sign, and rewired the entire kitchen and dining room. They completed this project in under seven months which would have been sooner if not for pandemic glue shortages. We honestly cannot say enough positive things about Sam and his crew. If you want a beautiful renovation with pleasant, professional, highly skilled craftsmen to work with, Banks & Son is your contractor.

Absolute rip off. They changed the date without my consent and when I canceled upon receiving the…read morenotification, they tried to keep $50 as an admin fee. First - We had a few date discussions but selection could not be made until after deposit was paid. Once deposit was given, I asked for one date change, with a week notice, which we went back and forth on due to them not working Fridays. Second - No where in the estimate or any other communication, written or verbal, did they convey any admin fees other than actual paint related. Third - As I was moving into a new home from out of state, the painting date had to be moved to accommodate furniture placement. This was only done with their consent (one time) and at the time of request, I told them any day a particular week would work. They confirmed the change to 14 Sept. However, approximately a week and half later, as we approached the date, I received a confirmation for 15 Sept. I immediately reached out and said the date was 14. Ms. Jathiya responded that yes but since I stated any day that week (over a week ago) they took the liberty of changing the date. I explained that a lot has happened since you confirmed the 14th with work so I couldn't accommodate the 15th due to me planning meetings around the 14th. With COVID, work schedules have been crazy and trying to coordinate availability for multiple peers is difficult so to move a few days before wasn't possible. Anyway I asked for a deposit ($750) refund so that I could find someone else to paint. They agreed. Nearly three weeks later I didn't see the credit on my Amex. I reached out and Jathiya stated she'll get right on it. Well she sends me a receipt and it's for $700! I'm like what the heck. I call and she proceeds to tell me there are admin fees. I replied that you can't charge fees that the customer didn't know about nor agree to. Additionally you changed the date. She replied that the date was changed a few times, I said once, that was agreed to by both parties. She kept talking and I was done. I'm disputing this madness. After receipt of copies of the written estimate and email conversation, Amex refunded the full amount of $750. BEWARE OF THESE FOLKS!!!!!!

Peppermint gave us a good bid, booked us promptly, handled the payment smoothly online, and did great work. They have excellent Covid precautions, and everyone wore masks the entire time, which I'm sure makes for uncomfortable working conditions, but it saves me fretting of everyone's safety, theirs and ours. The room looks terrific, and we will definitely hire them again.

J&G Contractors - Bathroom sink cabinet and fixtures and wall painted

Unfortunately my husband I had an overall negative experience with J&G Contractors & feel that…read moreJimmy is not trustworthy. I originally found J&G through Nextdoor -- I had posted that I needed a bird's nest removed and some minor exterior repair. Jimmy came right over, assessed the issue, and it was gone in the week. This was an easy, small job -- but I was impressed by Jimmy's quick response and asked if he could handle the bigger job of repainting the entire interior of my home. Jimmy assessed the overall size/rooms of our home and gave us what we thought was a fair quote. They started the job the first week of Feb 2023. I was working from home during the contracted project, so I was able to observe the work. There were a series of issues: - Jimmy used a sample of paint from Benjamin Moore to color match at Sherwin Williams. There was an issue with the color matching, but Jimmy purchased 5 gallons up front, which was a waste of about $500. I always recommend color matching a single gallon first so you can double check that the colors are correct on the wall patch before moving forward. Jimmy wanted us to pay for the full cost of the 5 gallons of incorrect paint, but we talked him down to 50%. - Jimmy wasn't correctly communicating with his painting team, so they painted several ceilings that they were not supposed to. Sure, the ceilings looked nice, but it was a waste of labor time and paint, which meant that the painting project lasted longer than it needed to. - At one point there was an argument between Jimmy and half of his painting team. Those few guys refused to continue working for Jimmy, which meant the painting team was reduced by half--adding to the length of time it took to finish the job. Jimmy inappropriately told me about the argument (which had something to do with him paying or not paying half of them up front) and referred to his crew as "a bunch of girls." Unfortunately he repeated this story to my husband, which also just made us feel like he wasn't doing a good job of managing his team. - The 3 guys who were left painting appeared to start rushing to get the job done. There was a lot of paint left on our floors, which we've been slowly scraping up in the months since they finished. - We also discovered after the project was over that they had smashed a lamp in our den & tried to hide the evidence. Unfortunately the lamp was clearly missing its glass cover and we were vacuuming shards of glass for several days. - The guys also clogged my bathroom sink with a ton of paint because they were washing their paint brushes off there instead of in the kitchen. I asked Jimmy to unclog the sink, which he did. And then he POSTED A PICTURE OF IT to his Instagram with a caption like "We do it all." Yeah. You clog people's sink with paint and then unclog it? Okay, Jimmy. I'll also add that he posted other photos from my house that I did not approve and I would like him to take those photos down. - We asked Jimmy if he could remove one of our railings and he seemed utterly confused by the railing bolts. He went to the hardware store and I think spent $40 on various bits and told me none of the bits fit and he couldn't do it. My husband went to the store, bought the right bit, and just did it himself in 30 minutes. - The kitchen cabinets were to be lightly sanded, primed, and painted. Jimmy's team did not do this. They also didn't remove all the doors from the cabinets to really do a careful job with the details. The paint is thick with drips, there are areas where they clearly missed painting entirely, and it is peeling in some spots only 3 months later. Jimmy seemed confused as to why the paint wasn't gripping to the cabinet doors and we requested again that the team sand, prime, and paint. I'll note here that our original quote indicated that the team would use a paint sprayer (which allows for even painting) and Jimmy said they didn't have a sprayer and wouldn't use one. - Jimmy recognized that the cabinets were done very poorly and sent us an email before he left that had a 1-year guarantee specifically for the cabinets. We pressed him about what this meant and he said "Oh, any time you have an issue - a scratch or something - I'll send a guy out to fix it. Any time during the year." Since Jimmy sent us this guarantee, he is GHOSTED us. For awhile I received some weird excuse emails, but now it is radio silence. He had also agreed via email to replace our lamp or reimburse us the $100 (luckily it was a cheaper lamp from Target). Nope -- no reimbursement for the lamp, no reply to our requests to discuss the issues with the cabinets. We are likely going to end up re-doing all the cabinets ourselves because Jimmy did such a bad job. Truly, the worst part of this situation is that this review would probably be 3 or 4 stars if Jimmy were a better business owner and offered to re-do the cabinets correctly and reimburse us for the broken lamp.
