I was referred to Bay Periodontics by Valencia Dental in the Mission District, under the impression that this office was within my insurance network. For context, the surgery costs approximately $5,000, but with my insurance, my out-of-pocket expense at my previous in-network periodontist would have been around $600. To my surprise, I was quoted approximately $5,000 out of pocket at this office because they were out of network. What makes this experience even more frustrating is that I essentially paid for a consultation to be told something I already knew and had previously discussed with another specialist. On top of that, I'm now being charged $150 for the visit. I understand that medical and dental consultations come with fees, and providers have every right to charge for their services. However, I also believe patients deserve to know whether a provider is in network before committing to an appointment, especially when insurance coverage is a major factor in their decision. Why would I knowingly agree to pay $5,000 out of pocket for a procedure that would cost me approximately $600 with an in-network provider? My frustration isn't with the recommended treatment or the need for surgery. It's with the lack of clear communication and transparency throughout the referral and scheduling process. Patients should not have to waste their time and money discovering insurance limitations that could have been clarified beforehand.
