There are not enough stars in the world to describe Dr. Temlock and Nashville Periodontal Group! I went to go see Dr. Temlock at Nashville Periodontal Group in his Nashville, TN office (they have a Brentwood, TN location too) after I went to another local periodontist that my general dentist referred me to. The experience with the other Periodontist felt rushed, uninspiring, and it felt like they just wanted my money and required a deposit to schedule my surgery after 15 minutes with the staff and maybe 5 minutes with the doctor. So, I wanted a second opinion, and I am so happy I did! First, I want to talk about Dr. Temlock. He spent an entire hour with me at my initial consultation, and he really took the time to explain everything to me in terms that I could understand. I've never seen a doctor or dentist spend that much time with me! His chair-side manner was a 10/10, and I felt totally educated about my periodontal issue. He was there to answer all my questions, and he helped guide me through the anticipated surgery so I could make the right decision for MYSELF! He was so kind, patient, and genuine. This was almost the exact opposite of what occurred at the first periodontist's office. Second, his staff was super nice, and they helped me out every step of the way regarding the logistics. They need to be mentioned here too because they were so awesome too! I was very anxious about my surgery, but Dr. Temlock's knowledge, skills, confidence, and experience really put me at ease. I chose to be sedated for my procedure (and this was the best money I ever spent throughout the whole situation!), and I do not remember anything! I needed a really bad/cracked tooth removed, a sinus lift, and bone graft so I could get a dental implant. Sounds scary, right!?! Not with Dr. Temlock and Nashville Periodontal Group's staff! Everything went just as he explained it at the consult. He even called me the next day to ask how I was doing and answer my questions. I've couldn't believe the doctor actually called me instead of the nurse! Dr. Temlock really does care about his patients, and he even gave me his phone number in case I had any more questions over the weekend. Lastly, I returned to the office for my follow-up appointment about 3 weeks after the surgery, and Dr. Temlock saw me, took time to personally evaluate the surgical area, and answered all my questions again. I thought I was only going to see the assistant/nurse from Nashville Periodontal Group that day, but Dr. Temlock was the one who entered the room. I couldn't believe it! Dr. Temlock reassured me that I was healing great and right on schedule, and Dr. Temlock explained that everything was on course which helped calm down my anxiety too. Overall, I cannot thank Dr. Temlock and the staff at Nashville Periodontal Group enough! Everyone is so professional and understanding. From the first time I met Dr. Temlock through the last goodbye, I cannot thank him enough. Now that everything major is complete, I am going to get my teeth cleaned with Dr. Temlock's hygienists and alternate between my dentist's office and Nashville Periodontal Group. Highly recommended periodontist! I'm so glad I found Dr. Temlock, totally worth the flight from LA to SF. I needed to extract two teeth that was all the way up by my sinus and bone grafts after, maybe a sinus lift. To be honest, I had anxiety about it. Thanks to Dr. Temlock the process went super super super smooth. I am a hygienist, so I had specific expectations for my future surgery. Like most people, I did not want to go through more surgery than I needed. I have been in the dental field for 10 years and have heard of Dr. Temlock's good reputation through other dental providers. I didn't feel comfortable with local periodontists I consulted with in LA. I had to do something fast since I had an infection near my sinus. Dr. Temlock is the best periodontist ever! :) After two years of putting off getting a lateral gum graft, I decided it was time to take the plunge and do the surgery during my time off this past winter break. All of the periodontists that were listed under my insurance, United Healthcare, had low reviews and I decided with a surgery this serious I needed to go with a periodontist that is credible and that I could trust. After my procedure, I was in pain for ~7 days but the pain meds I was prescribed by Dr. Temlock helped greatly with that. Update (2/24/22): biz's reply is a clear attempt to remove a genuine patient's experience and IMO is dishonest. I re-reviewed the business to be 100% correct. Front desk has a receptionist by the name of Lindsey and recognize the office. The correction is the Dr is a periodontist, not an oral surgeon. --------- Based on Yelp's reviews, I decided to visit Dr.Temlock for my oral surgery but it turned out to be one of the most dramatic and horrifying experiences of my adult life. I do not recommend coming here for oral surgery. Outside of the botched surgical procedure and how the staff initially handled my request, most of everything else was acceptable. This review will be brief with details redacted. The dental office presented a sound oral surgery plan but when I insisted on taking a cautious approach, they didn't take it well and kept insisting it couldn't be done. After much wrangling, almost to the point of having the appointment cancelled, they finally agreed to my approach. Now, this is where the whole thing went sideways. The night of the surgery when my anesthesia wore off and having already taken the recommended pain killers (Oxy), the pain was still so tremendous and unbearable that for a brief minute suicide was considered. I recognize this may read as a hyperbole but there reaches a point the human mind can only withstand so much and just wanting to give up - this was it. The level of throbbing/shooting pain was a constant 8 or 9 out of 10 for three days. In those three days I was completely bedridden and immediately lost 5-7 pounds due to not being able to chew/eat (on the good side). It felt as if the surgery had severely injured a part of my mouth/throat where it wasn't suppose to because even swallowing my own saliva was extremely painful. My new periodontist performed the same work on a larger area and the pain was very moderate. The difference was day and night. I hope no one else has to go through this. read more

Lindsay continues to talk about the second treatment (where I confirmed that I had changed my insurance from Cigna to Delta Dental and there were mix messages from Delta Dental. I've never had an issue with any dental service providers or Cigna Dental in 11+ years till that first and only time with you/Temlock. I stand by 1 star. The saving grace is the others that work there and Temlock's skill. A month ago I had major extractions and he did superb bone grafting on my jaw to hold implants that will eventually give me my high-wattage smile back. He's a wonderful person as well. These were the first times I ever experienced conscious sedation. One minute I'm selecting a show to watch on Netflix, and then the next minute I'm at home in bed. No memory of the procedure itself. I had and continue to have such great experiences at Dr. Temlock's office. I came in for an emergency wisdom teeth extraction. Dr. Temlock's team was extremely empathetic of my situation and made the time to see me that same day despite me being a completely new patient. His team of nurses and Dr. Temlock himself made me feel really comfortable and safe. They outlined the procedure in a very transparent manner, including all the expenses that I would have to cover. They gave me clear instructions on what to do post surgery (down to the tee!) before my procedure and after with a handy folder of information. I opted for conscious sedation, and I couldn't be happier with the choice! I felt no pain during the procedure despite being conscious (I took photos of myself without remembering) and have no recollection of the procedure itself. I was able to get all four wisdom teeth extracted and even a deep cleaning (which can be painful) while sedated. Dr. Temlock is my dental hero! During the pandemic my oral health issues seriously escalated as I hadn't had a proper cleaning in 2 years by the time I finally found myself back in a dentist's chair. They immediately sent me to Dr. Temlock to treat my advanced periodontitis. I was so lucky to get that referral and become under his excellent care. He guided me through an intense overhaul of my mouth with osseous surgery and tons of bone grafts with ease. My healing went so smoothly. And, I only needed ibuprofen! His bedside manner is as impeccable as the quality of his work. I have never had another dental professional take so much time to reassure, explain things, and listen as deeply as he does. I had put off treating my gum recession for a few years and finally sought treatment at Dr. Temlock's office, who I was referred to through my dentist. Dr. Temlock and his staff were phenomenal throughout the process. Dr. Temlock is very upbeat and personable, and makes what could otherwise seem a daunting experience positive and comfortable. He's a great communicator, and I felt very much "in the loop" at each step in my treatment. Lindsay Salsman (who will likely help you schedule your appointments and navigate any pharmacy / insurance specifics) was extremely helpful and attentive, and answered all my various questions leading up to and after the surgery. She called to check in on me the next day after both my procedures. The frenectomy and gum graft procedures went smoothly. The frenectomy had a very short healing process. I had heard gum grafts were pretty uncomfortable, but I was completely numb the first day and when I woke up the second day I wasn't in any pain. Other than sticking to soft foods for the first 3-4 days, the healing process was unremarkable -- I would have taken care of my recession much sooner had I known this. My only recommendation would be to ask for another local anesthetic if you feel anything (at all) immediately post surgery. I didn't do this for my frenectomy, and the same day recovery was fine, but I did for the subsequent gum graft and not feeling anything for the rest of the day was better. My outcome was great: I had a pretty significant recession and I was able to recover my gum tissue. I've had a number of medical and dental procedures over the years and can't think of a better experience than the one here. I would strongly recommend Dr. Temlock's office. read more

Let me start by saying that Dr. Temlock is the best periodontist I have seen by far, and trust me, I've seen a few. He is very reassuring and personable, which definitely helps when you are having something as nerve wracking as a gum graft done. His hygienists are also top notch. Sandra helped me with a deep cleaning, and I've had very little pain or sensitivity after. Not to mention she completed the deep cleaning in under an hour, a task which my dentist was trying to tell me it would take two different two hour appointments. Dr. Temlock helped me with my third round of gum grafts, and his was by far the least painful and quickest to heal, compared to the other two periodontists I saw in the past. Shirley and the rest of the front office are also exemplary. She is always very prompt, and more than happy to answer all my questions. Every time I have gone into the office she has always been really nice and very attentive to my needs. She even gets an extra star, since I have not once had any kind of billing issues with the office. Which is a lot more than I can say about the other two periodontist offices I have been to. I found this office the same way you are now: through Yelp. San Francisco Periodontics and Implant Dentistry (SFPID) is a very modern office. The staff is extremely gracious and very knowledgeable. They do everything possible to be accommodating to my needs. I was amazed at how nimble they are with scheduling. Dr. Temlock is very affable and down to Earth. He dispenses with jargon and explains procedures in plain, easy to understand terms. Dr Temlock's easy-going chairside manner belies the expertise of his work. But those are vanilla descriptions. The real assessment of a practitioner's skill is work in progress and lasting results. I came to have a troublesome molar extracted and renovated with a dental implant. The extraction was performed swiftly with sensitivity to my concerns. I had never had to undergo an extraction before. I harbored a lot of anxiety about what would happen. Well, I was surprised at how quickly the procedure took place, the lack of pain, the concerned follow ups, and the overall handling of that phase of my dental work. After a suitable healing period following the extraction I returned to have a routine inspection and assessment to proceed with the implant. I ended up badly needing a lingual gum graft. After seeing a few other periodontists some wouldn't even attempt it on me, others were preparing me for a botched surgery job, and one said I was a going to lose my teeth immediately! I checked online and decided to go to Dr Temlock's office for a second opinion after seeing all the positive reviews. I'm so glad that I did. He had a better treatment plan with some the latest technology. He also has great beside manner and he and his entire team were able to calm down my high anxiety about the procedure. For the gum graft I elected for conscious sedation option. It really works. I don't remember much of the rest of the day after I got to their office for my procedure. Anyway I'm a few months out and my recession looks about 50% improvement as well as the tissue regeneration in the area is a huge improvement. This is a way overdue review :-) I was referred by my dentist to Dr Temlock for my gum recession on all four quadrants. Dr Temlock explained the process patiently pre-op. The operations for two quadrants were done successfully (the only discomfort I experience is the anesthesia jabs) and I healed quickly. The staff Shirley was so nice that she texted me the night after the surgery to make sure I'm doing ok... so sweet and thoughtful! Billing was done transparently as I was billed what I expected. I am having teeth cleaning with Ruby in the same practice. Ruby is always gentle and very detail during my cleaning. The fluoride vanish she put on my teeth greatly reduce my teeth sensitivity. On the day when I had my surgery I had a difficult case and everyone stayed late on a Friday night to make sure it finished fine. They texted me later in the evening to check up on me and make sure there were no problems. So super prompt and helpful! Even during off-hours! Even when they're supposedly on vacation and it's also the weekend and it's late at night! I've literally sent insane long lists of crazy questions at 11pm on a Sunday night... and then within minutes I receive a response saying "I'm on vacation, so please talk to X, but here's a super detailed and careful response to everything you asked." Everyone on staff is so well prepared and warm! I have been going to Dr. Temlock for about 1.5 years now. My general dentist recommended I go to a periodontist. When I came in my teeth were in bad shape. Dr. Temlock described the issues and the procedures required to improve their condition. After the initial procedures, my teeth were in better shape. I also had Dr. Temlock put in implants. Without exaggeration or pride, I am every dentist's worst nightmare. I have extreme dental PTSD and as a result am a highly anxious patient. Even getting into a reception area (let alone in the seat) takes a great deal of coaxing. Dr Temlock saved my teeth! I had impacted wisdom teeth and my molars were in really bad shape so he used bone marrow to save my molars while also bringing my gums back to health. This was no easy job it required 2 long surgeries and I'm an anxious and high-maintenance patient. Shirley was an absolute angel and so is Dr. Temlock's whole team. Lindsay the office manger is lovely and the hygienist I followed up with post surgery Sandra is also extraordinary she did an amazing job cleaning my teeth. I will never be able to thank Dr. Temlock and his amazing team enough for everything they did to help me heal and regain my self esteem. Thank you so much! I have pretty severe gum recession (have had multiple dentists and perios tell me so), so I've now done three gum graft surgeries with Dr. Temlock. I truly wouldn't trust anyone else. Dr. Temlock is one of the kindest humans you'll ever meet, and he really cares about his patients. He never pushed me towards a procedure unless it was absolutely necessary, and for each one, I had multiple appointments where he walked me through the prep, surgery, and recovery to make sure I was completely comfortable, informed, and prepared. I've met with other perios and haven't come across another that holds your hand every step of the way like that. Dr. Temlock has grafted over hard-to-reach teeth in the back of my mouth, and teeth front and center, and all surgeries have been extremely successful and look great - you'd never know I had the procedure done. His team is also incredibly nice and responsive. Really, really hope that I'm done with these surgeries, but if I have to do it again, it'll be with Dr. Temlock. read more

I can't imagine a better practice than Dr Temlock's. I went in today for two wisdom teeth extractions as yet another step in rebooting my oral health. Shirley has such pleasant and thorough bedside manners in addition to a deep compassion for her patients that really goes above and beyond from one might expect from front-office staff. I was referred to Dr Temlock's from another dentist because I was in emergency pain and she has consistently provided the best care for me ever since she picked up the phone that first time. Everything from texts about appointments and consent forms via email set a new bar for patient responsibility. I did not make my acquaintance with my hygienist for today's appointment but she had the competence and character to make sure I was well taken care of the entire time, even as she was off the clock and walking out the door. It was such a kind and wonderful gesture that she took the extra time to ask about me and volunteer her service when I was in the lobby waiting out traffic with gauze in my mouth when she absolutely didn't have to. I especially liked that I wasn't rushed out the door when it was over. I appreciated the opportunity to chill out as long as I had to. Dr Temlock himself turned the entire procedure into a non-event. He's such a likable guy and he clearly knows what he's doing. He scheduled wisdom teeth extractions as a precursor to how I will do with periodontal surgery because despite his proficiency he doesn't let ego get in the way of a sound medical practice. The two wisdom teeth he yanked out was nothing compared to the last time I had the last two taken out. I have been so pleasantly blindsided by my experience here and find it hard pressed to be short of recommendations, especially after recent dental appointments with others. 11 out of 10. I wish every medical experience was a pleasant as mine has been with Dr. Temlock and Shirley! Dr. Temlock has raised the bar for what I look for in a health practitioner. He is professional, articulate, informative and proficient- I couldn't have asked for better results with the work that he has done. Shirley, his front office staff, is amazing! She's the main reason I decided to go to Dr. Temlock in the first place. I first spoke with Shirley when I was shopping around for a practitioner to perform a gum graft. I appreciated her no-nonsense explanation of what to expect with a gum graft (cost, healing time, success rate, etc). Her willingness to answer all of my questions (there were many) over the phone without requiring me to first schedule a consultation to talk options was refreshing. I scheduled the exam/consultation and I could tell even before going in that I would have them do my gum graft. Many appointments later, Shirley became even more impressive. She was thoroughly communicative, always followed up when she said she would, delivered all paperwork as stated and went above and beyond to help me and difficult schedule. Over the next three months, I ended up having a teeth cleaning, frenectomy and gum graft with Dr. Temlock. Every interaction with Dr. Temlock and his staff has been nothing short of stellar. Cleaning- The cleaning was pretty standard, but necessary because I hadn't had one in many years. The woman that performed the cleaning did an excellent job and I will happily have her do it again in the future. Also, she probably gave the pleasant cleaning I've ever had- past cleanings with other hygienists have always been a little rough. Frenectomy- This was performed exactly as stated by Dr. Temlock and I had better results than I expected. Basically, it's the surgical removal of the frenulum that connects the bottom lip to the bottom gum. I had no idea what a frenulum was before my exam, or the damage that was being done. However, once the procedure was finished and I healed up, there was a massive difference in the tension on my gums. The healing process took a little time, but it was completely worth it! Dr. Temlock did a great job; I didn't feel any pain during the procedure and he made the process as relaxing as possible. Gum graft- This was the "scary" procedure that I put off for 10 years. The procedure was exactly what they told me to expect. I didn't experience any pain during the procedure, the healing process was totally manageable and the results have been better than expected. I'm extremely happy with my results. I couldn't be happier with my experience working with Dr. Temlock and his staff or my results! Let me start by telling you why you should trust my review: I'm an oral surgery connaisseur, not to brag or anything. This was my 5th significant periodontal surgery and my second implant (I can thank a combination of genes and small town dentistry for that). The short version: Dr. Temlock is the best person for the job, and makes the experience as pleasant as possible. He's the real deal. Want to know why? I can sum up three main reasons that make him the best in his field, though I'm sure there are more. And remember, I'm uniquely qualified to break this down with several experiences to compare this to [she stated with the weakest reason to be smug]: 1. Patience and empathy: he spent as much time as I needed to talk through my concerns, why I had put this off for so long, and got into the nitty gritty of the process (thats a bone graft joke for you). I never felt like he was annoyed or that I was insulting his abilities to do the job well. He listened and then gave me plenty of insight until I felt confident in my decision. 2. Craftsmanship and confidence: his confidence in his staff was assuring and the respect he granted everyone on his team was encouraging, which can be rare. He was positive and focused, even when things were particularly challenging (again, thank you genes and previously terrible work). I knew that I was getting the best possible care from start to finish. What's more, the shots were so expertly administered I was using all that prime laughing gas joke telling time to express how shocked I was. It was almost completely painless. The man is an artist, everyone. 3. Comfort: During my visit, I was truly made to be comfortable in every regard, extending to even being offered a blanket so that I wasn't chilly during the procedure (always a yes). I was prepared for major pain, based on previous work, but through some magical process, the healing period has been very mangeable. I was back at work the next day because I was feeling so good. On day two? For me? That's utterly unheard of. I also had a painkiller combo that made me feel comfortable without being too sedative or strong- opioids are too much for me, and so he set me up with a combo of NSAIDS. I am thrilled by all of this. I'm still so surprised to see my mouth on such a pleasant rebound after some pretty extensive work. (See: craftsmanship, above) Add to this the clean and light-filled office, the kind staff, the willingness to accommodate the fact that my insurance was not picking up very much of the bill (that's for another review entirely); I am almost bummed that I won't be making my regular visits there. *Almost bummed*, because I'm not dying to get many more surgeries, folks. All this to say, if you're putting off periodontal work or if you're looking for the best provider or if you're anxious about a needed procedure - Dr. Temlock is the first person you should see. read more

I am not much of a Yelper as you can tell by my lack of reviews but I had to write one for Dr. Temlock and Shirley. They are a dynamic duo! I will make this short and sweet. Hands down one of the BEST dental experiences I have ever had. Super clean office. Dr. Temlock is hilarious and very thorough. He answered all of my questions (and trust me there were many) in such detail that I felt really confident going into surgery. Even his assistant the day of the surgery was awesome. They made it so easy from start to finish. Dr. T even made time out of his busy schedule to see me today 6 days post op super last minute because I had questions. I would highly, highly recommend Dr. Temlock and his practice! One more thing..Shirley his Receptionist..OMG this girl is the best. She is the sweetest person EVER!!!! After my surgery, during off hours and even over the holiday weekend, Shirley was emailing me, checking on me making sure I was doing well. Going above and beyond her call of duty. I have never had someone be so caring and sweet from a dental practice. She didn't have to go out of her way to do any of this but she did and without hesitation.
