I got too much work done here, some of which has been causing me pain for the last year. I went back to Dr. Hart repeatedly to try and address the pain, but when it became apparent to me that Smiles by Hart was more interested in making money off me rather than fixing their mistakes, I decided to leave their care. After some time, I discovered that the crown Dr. Hart had placed on one of my molars was loose when it eventually fell off. The whole time I had been repeatedly told that all I needed was a few more bite adjustments to make it fit right. Naturally they would say this when they were making money off me for these bite adjustments. Seeking the aid of another dentist, we recemented the crown in place, but my mouth still doesn't feel right. My bite has been permanently and, in my opinion, unnecessarily altered causing me daily discomfort and pain which I did not experience before. I feel like a shell of my former self living with the damage done to my mouth and my bank account. Therefore, I'd recommend seeking out another more affordable and, most importantly, less invasive dentist. read more

Going to Smiles by Hart for dental care (starting in 2023) was probably the poorest heath care decision I ever made. I believe I had A LOT of unnecessary work done on my teeth. So far, two of my capped teeth Dr. John Hart worked on fractured, resulting in extractions and EXPENSIVE dental implants (from other practices, of course). The Smiles by Hart office is clean and high-tech. The staff is very friendly. Every examination room has a big screen TV. The staff will take brightly lite, high-resolution photographs of your teeth to show you all of "your problems" on the big screen TV. Dr. John Hart's sales skills are excellent. Dr. Hart believes he can do a root canal on any tooth; no need for an endodontist (root canal specialist). Dr. Hart believes he can make your dental cap in the office, while you wait; no need for an outside lab for crown fabrication. The first signs of trouble were that my Smiles by Hart crowns started coming off. This happened multiple times. I got my very first crown in 2016 from a different dentist and it never came off. Now I am left wondering how many other teeth that Dr. Hart worked will fail, resulting in more dental implants. read more

I would not recommend this practice based on several experiences that left me feeling uneasy and questioning whether patient care or profit was the priority. The dentists are very personable, which initially made it easy to trust their recommendations. The office also features impressive, high-tech equipment that gives the appearance of a cutting-edge and trustworthy practice. However, my experience did not align with that impression. At one appointment, I was told I had a cavity based on AI detection from my X-ray. This surprised me, as I've never had a cavity and take excellent care of my teeth. Wanting to be cautious, I sought a second opinion. The other dentist thoroughly reviewed my X-rays and confirmed that I did not have any cavities and that my teeth looked great--consistent with what I've always been told prior to coming here. That experience significantly undermined my confidence in this practice. Additionally, my husband, who has never needed extensive dental work in the past, was suddenly presented with a lengthy treatment plan. The pattern of these recommendations made us feel uncomfortable and concerned that unnecessary procedures may have been suggested. There was also an issue at the front desk when I was told my insurance did not cover an X-ray and that I would need to pay out of pocket. After I questioned this and pushed back, they later reversed course and acknowledged that my insurance did, in fact, cover it. That interaction added to my concerns. After multiple instances that made me feel pressured and uncertain, the AI-detected "cavity" was the final straw. I value transparency and conservative, patient-centered care, and unfortunately, that was not my experience here. read more

My office experience was disappointing to say the least. One of the secretaries attempted to placate me by using dental terminology. However It didn't deter my disposition on the business as a whole. I needed to see a new dentist because my old dentist who was real good retired and he referred me to Smiles By Hart. I met both Dr. John Hart and also his daughter Victoria Hart who are both very nice and professional. John did my procedure when I had an inlay filling and made the procedure very comfortable with giving understandable instructions. The whole staff there made me feel at ease and were really friendly. I have to also give kudos to the receptionist Ashley including all the staff who are also friendly and easy to deal with. It was very convenient to work around payment arrangements too and communication was great. As far as the quality of the job from the dental hygienists of Alicia and Shannon, A+! One thing about this office compared to any other dentists are they are extremely thorough and would be honest if you really had a condition and not overlook your health of the gums/teeth. In fact, they even had updated technology that catches any issues with the entire mouth, gums, and teeth with thorough X-Rays. They will determine if there are any concerns/issues with the mouth and will recommend the proper treatment knowing what can be fixed, not just cavities. My past dentists have never even told me anything that I had problems with my gums all along. I have been seeing Dr. Hart for over a month now with a few visits but sadly it was for getting gum disease treated and to get an inlay which wasn't really on pleasant terms. However, I have yet to get a great cleaning which next time I am going in for. With that being said, I definitely trust how they will do the cleaning, and they seem to do a great job checking everything. I don't think I ever want to change dentists now! For anyone who has dental fear and are afraid to go to dentists, please go see Dr. Hart! This is recommended. However, the only con I have is this dentist is not cheap. It does get expensive even with dental insurance but that is expected and it's totally worth the cost to take care of your health. Money buys great quality care. read more

I don't think I have enough room to type all the goodness of this dental office. Smiles by Hart is the most through dental office this city has to offer. The entire staff is friendly, personable, & extremely knowledgeable. I have never been asked so many questions of how I want my smile to look; that in of itself spoke volumes about their customer service. Your entire dental experience is customized in such a way that you feel comfortable about your experience. My first visit was during the Covid pandemic. The office was surgical grade clean and all precautions were followed. You even enter the facility one way and leave out another. I felt extremely protected & safe during my visit. This is a dental experience that I highly recommend. Dr. Hart has earned a patient for sure. Smiles by Hart is absolutely outstanding!!! read more

While the staff and service are nice, this dentist over-diagnosed cavities. I'd never had one cavity in my entire life, and after going here and being persuaded that "small cavities need filled now before they become a problem" -- I walked out with multiple fillings and a hefty bill. I heavily regret taking their advice, and have never gone back. Fair warning to all, I'd either avoid or get a second opinion. read more

Dr. Hart is the best! For the first time I was actually comfortable at the dentist. I was initially scared to get my teeth looked at especially with the current pandemic but the staff took every precaution and made me feel very safe. The office itself is definitely fancy and everyone has smiles on their faces. HOWEVER, it could be unnecessarily expensive and they tricked you into paying more and more. They never give you an estimate before the office visit even if you give them all the info and X-ray scans. That's still okay. What's not okay was that at the office after Dr. Hart saw me, they still couldn't give me a quote for my tooth extraction UNLESS I get an extra 3D X-ray (CT scan) that costs $250 at their office. I totally understand the rationale for a CT scan, and the decision was formed after seeing my X-ray. Then why wouldn't they tell me I probably need this scan once they saw my X-ray? I could have saved the $70 office visit fee and my time where I got nothing done rather than filling out some forms and smiling at a camera. If you are rich and don't care about money, this is the fancy place to go. Otherwise choose other places. read more

I've used them as my dental care provider for several years now and have been extremely satisfied. They may not be the cheapest option around, but in this case, you get what you pay for. I called and explained exactly what I was looking for and that I didn't have insurance, and they gave me an acceptable quote, so I scheduled an appointment. Spent an hour registering as a new patient, and only after they already had me in the chair did Dr. Hart tell me he couldn't do anything without an additional $200+ in scans. It was going to cost me over $300 to have a small fixed retained removed. I just couldn't pay that, but they still charged me $70 for the office visit, which consisted entirely of filling out forms and glancing at the retainer once. They absolutely could and should have told me over the phone that they wouldn't do any work without those scans. It felt inconsiderate at best, dishonest at worst, and put me in a very frustrating and embarrassing position. read more

I went to John Hart a while ago. He has a fancy machine that finds small variations in tooth structure; he then calls them cavities and wants to fill them. I got suspicious when he said my mouth had multiple cavities when I had had only one or two before in my life. In my view (and in the view of the dentist I went to afterward) he wanted to drill into what were perfectly good, cavity-free teeth. Don't let him do it--stay far away! read more

Dr John Hart And his entire staff at Smiles by Hart are the greatest most caring team there is! So much that I felt compelled to write this review. My worst insecurity growing up was my smile. I honestly couldn't talk my whole life without feeling embarrassed. I've gone to multiple dentists and had multiple consultations...and nobody had listened to me or cared about my concerns like dr Hart. In such a gentle manner, he had my teeth evaluated thoroughly with radiographs and intra oral images to really look at my dental health all around. His team was able to schedule me the same week for some fillings I needed! Then we got down to what I really value in my dental health which was always to have a nice smile. (You seriously get it all here, orthodontics, restorative, all of it!) I've never felt so safe and cared for before by a dentist! Truly. Dr Hart and his team heard me out and really worked with me to get me the results I wanted. Now only halfway through my Invisalign treatment I can honestly say I've never felt so confident and happy. I cannot wait to see the end result!!! Thank you SO much Dr hart for making my dreams actually come true. It took 25 years but I finally found a winner! I will tell you our experiences and you decide: my 22 year old son is now on his own and living in Pittsburgh. He had seen the same dentist for his entire life, but he is not able to get back to our home for an appointment, so he is finding his own docs and dentists, as he should. My son, B, works at UPMC and asked around for the best dentist. We have great dentists in our family and he was proud that he found a great dentist, Dr. Hart, in Pittsburgh. B told me all about the fancy office and upscale equipment and the staff. His initial appointment was REALLY expensive, 3D x-rays, etc. I was surprised by the cost but ok (I am still paying at this point). B had one cavity when he was 7 and he had his wisdom teeth out and that was the extent of any dental intervention he had needed up to the age of 21. He got excellent care from our home dentist. B called me after the appointment with Dr. Hart and said the new dentist had found that some fillings were needed. I was fine with that because that sometimes happens. I saw the charge before they did the fillings-- four of them, which I thought was a lot, and they charged top top dollar. Our insurance covered a small part of any of this. That was ok, because it needed to be done and was being done. But, then, when I logged into the insurance website to check on the first bill, another "pre-approval" was posted for another four fillings for B. I called B and he said, yeah, unfortunately, the dentist found 12 teeth in all that needed filling and it may go as high as 16. The dentist isn't also isn't sure whether one of my back molars needs a crown, B said. This seemed very odd to me and I was worried about B's losing valuable tooth material unnecessarily. I called Dr. Hart's office and asked to have the Xrays and treatment plan forwarded to B's home dentist for a look. After some back and forth, they agreed to send the Xrays but would not send the treatment plan "that's proprietary information" (that alone ordinarily would send me running; why not send a treatment plan if it is sound? all I was looking for was confirmation that the work needed to be done.) It seemed very odd to me that a child who had fluoride in his water from birth, checkups with the dentist every six months and with a lifetime history of 1 filling would suddenly at age 21 need 12 or more full fillings and perhaps a crown. The receptionist at the home dentist said that it would take some time for B's dentist to take a look at the films and he probably could not give that much of an informed opinion since he hadn't seen B in a year. However, she called back about five minutes after the films were sent to them. My experience is that health care professionals NEVER criticize one another. There may be some kind of professional code. The home dentist said was, "it's possible that this dentist doesn't get B's teeth the way I do after working with B since he was 3 years old. He may be misinterpreting some ridges and pits that are natural to B's teeth as cavities when they really aren't. The teeth in these films look like what we took a year ago." I asked the local dentist's office what they advised and they said "find another dentist, don't do the work until B can have a 'more conservative' dentist give a second opinion." B cancelled the other fillings and is probably not going back. He will find another dentist in his area, and of course, it is possible that he needs work done. That is not the question. The question is how it is possible that a kid who has had no pain and no issues with his teeth could SUDDENLY need 12 or more teeth drilled and filled. I totally believed four teeth might need it but the higher number begs examination. I am NOT advising anyone else about what to do with this information, just describing my family's experience. And by the way, we live very close to San Francisco, our local dentists are among the best in our area. We are not living in a backwater. read more

I typically went to a different dentist; however, he was on vacation and I was hoping to get a quick filling before the July 4th holiday and Dr. Hart had evening availability. His office is rather lavish with hardwood floors, stained glass windows, I-pads to sign in and chic black uniforms. An X-Ray, was taken and Dr. Hart came in and spoke in a grave tone. He identified that X-Ray revealed a crack and that the old filling was broken (His diagnosis was accurate). He stated he was unsure if a cap or root canal would be needed and would not know until he removed the old filling. He also insisted upon also doing a Panoramic 3-D X-Ray. I asked about the cost of it and he said it is $500. When I objected he said he would do the X-Ray for free despite it's cost. A staff member took the Panoramic 3-D X-ray and I went back into the exam room. Dr. Hart looked at the Panoramic 3-D X-Ray; however, he again stated he doesn't really know if the tooth required a root canal or not unless he removes the old filling. Thus, 3-D Panoramic X-ray revealed nothing more than the standard $100 X-Ray. I got the feeling he wanted to show off his $50,000 dollar piece of equipment and his second floor. He said he was leaning more towards the tooth needing a root canal. Additionally, he said he could do it in one day and they have a lounge to wait in. I asked about the cost of such a procedure and he said "I don't talk about cost." You'll have to meet with a financial representative. I played along (Said: "Well I guess you're a doctor not a cost estimator"). At this point I was directed to a fancy office with a mahogany desk wto speak with the financial representative. She quoted $2,900 for a cap and root canal. I thanked her and said I would get a second opinion. At this point I saw a different dentist (Dr. Certo). He informed me a Panoramic 3-D X-Ray is only valuable in implant dentistry. He expressed that the tooth is probably healthy and referred me to an endodontist (Dr. Czonstkowsky). The endodontist tested the tooth and recommended having the old filling replaced and the new cavity filled and expressed little concern regarding the crack. In the mean time Dr. Hart's staff sent a thank you card, an online survey, and called me twice. In the end talking to other dentists saved me around $2,700 and the pain of an aggressive treatment plan. Dr. Hart did correctly analyze the X-Ray he took; however, he proscribed an aggressive and expensive course of treatment. Additionally, he took an unnecessary X-Ray that did not help him with his diagnosis. Dr. Hart has a fancy and high-tech office, which I presume is made possible by his aggressive treatment recommendations and high cost methods. Dr. Hart is likely a good dentist and does good work; however, I feel his focus is more on being state of the art and lavish than the patient, which is why I took my business to Dr. Certo. If you seek affordable and good dental care I advise you to do the same. read more
