JUST AN FYI FOR DENTAL PATIENTS…read more.. Re: Hawaii Family Dental at Kaahumanu Center... Last month our regular dentist in Kihei put a temporary filling in my husband's front, lower tooth that was bothering him and said it needed to be extracted. It would need to be done surgically because of the condition of the tooth and the fact it was impacted, so they set up a referral appointment for Dec. 19th at Hawaii Family Dental at Kaahumanu Center. They gave us an estimate of a little over $300 for the procedure. We live on limited Social Security income, so started saving for the appointment. Last week the filling came out and the tooth broke off. There wasn't much pain except for the sharp edge which was cutting the inside of my husband's lip and tongue. We called the Kaahumanu office and they nicely arranged for the extraction to be done on Oct. 10th. When we arrived, the nice ladies in front collected $150 because we told her we didn't have the full $325 or so needed, took my debit card info and agreed to run it on Oct. 29th for the balance owing. After a bit of a wait, the nurse came into the examination room to take 2 X-rays, and Terry told her he would need Nitrous due to the fact he had gone through a dental surgery many years ago where the doctor crushed a molar while extracting it and, as a result, Terry is a "white knuckle" patient. She informed him that would be an additional $158, due and payable prior to surgery. Terry told her we are having to save up for the procedure as is, and couldn't come up with that much that day. Since we couldn't pay the $158 that day, Terry asked that the doctor just grind down the edge that was cutting his lip and tongue, as we had originally requested for that day, until the extraction appointment, so he would be okay until the scheduled appointment Dec. 19th. The doctor walked into the room, struck a rather comical pose and very snottily informed him, "I am a SURGEON and I don't do that!" So we left... with the broken tooth still gouging Terry's mouth inside the lip. We asked them to apply the $150 already paid towards the original appointment for Dec. 19th, then went home and used our Dremel ourselves to grind the sharp edge.................. since we AREN'T surgeons and we DO what is needed to relieve pain and damage! On Oct. 13th I called their billing dept and complained. I also requested the $150 we prepaid be refunded since Dr. Sahdev didn't do anything. After a bit of a delay the woman came back and informed us they could only refund twenty some odd dollars since the doctor DID "consult" with the patient. I informed her that was unacceptable. She said she would have her supervisor call me back. I still had not received the promised callback by the 15th, so called once again, after discovering through my online banking app that the charge had posted to my account on Oct. 14th, in full ($150). Once again, I was told a supervisor would call me back. Here it is, Oct. 16th. My husband still has a tooth that needs to come out. We've filed the sharp edges ourselves so he's not in pain. We are out $150 for nothing and their billing department supervisor STILL has not seen fit to return my call. Would we recommend this practice to anyone else? Absolutely NOT!

Whatever you do - don't go here…read more My insurance was expiring at the end of the month. I called to see if they could accept me as a patient before that. I took OFF work because they could only get me in for X-rays at 8am and a cleaning at 11am. I went in for the X-rays and the dentist said it looked pretty good, but asked her assistant which Doctor I was seeing at 11am. When the assistant Dee replied which Doctor (Nancy) it was the one I was seeing said, "oh no, she'll probably want to do a deep cleaning, she doesn't need it but she'll probably want to do that." The assistant and the woman checking out gave me the option to do the deep cleaning for $500 out of pocket total (in two phases) or to stay with the cleaning. As a paycheck to paycheck, I can't just shell out money for a reason that oh this doctor is going to want it. I opted to stay with the cleaning. They said, thank you, see you at 11. I came back at 1045am and sat there until 1115am. The front desk called me up and said the dentist will not take my appt because I've been recommended for a deep cleaning. I told them the other Doctor gave me the option and I was losing insurance at the end of the month and took off work today for this. They said Dr. Nancy and the hygienist wouldn't take me unless I did the deep cleaning and paid. Told me to call back and reschedule when I have other insurance and a new job. This is absolutely horrible practice, I felt like it was a shake down. I will never go back to them!! For a lot of people paycheck-to-paycheck, you can't expect people to pay and refuse service for a "recommended work" because one doctor will let the other "hear it" Avoid.

This happened quite a while ago but it has a lasting impact on my life and I have gone back and…read moreforth about sharing it. When I had my braces with Conmy he told me that I was missing an adult tooth on the bottom right side and that in order for him to continue treatment I would need it removed. My mom told him we would rather just have the braces removed and discontinue treatment but instead he then said he wouldn't remove my braces until this was done. My dentist even advised against removing my "baby" tooth as it was perfectly fine and healthy and could last for years to come if not the rest of my life. However, the decision was made by Conmy to have it removed. Conmy them said I would need to go to an oral surgeon to have a screw placed to try and pull my remaining molars forward into the space where my tooth had been. This was traumatizing to say the least as it was extremely painful and failed TWICE. I had a screw loose and moving around in my jaw bone cutting into my right cheek and causing me pain for absolutely no reason because this whole "treatment", or what I would call experiment, didn't work. I now have had a hole in my mouth for almost a decade and due to this my teeth have shifted significantly, despite wearing my retainers religiously, and I will need braces or Invisalign again in my 20s. I am personally impacted by this decision for the rest of my life both financially in having to pay for another round of orthodontic treatment and the several thousand dollar titanium implant I will have to have placed in my jaw as well as physically by the pain of this experience which has continued to this day. I would love to note that a friend of mine went to Conmy around the same exact time as me and had the same issue but on the bottom left side of her mouth and guess what? Conmy didn't remove her tooth. I've been wondering for years if he just decided to use me as some guinea pig without my consent...I guess I'll never know. But having Conmy as my orthodontist was one of the worst experiences of my entire life and my experience matters so here I am sharing it. I hope this will help at least one person consider asking more questions and standing up for yourself. I was only 15 at the time, I wish I had used my voice and said no...but I trusted that he knew what was best for me. Thanks for reading this, I appreciate it.
