When you find a professional who knows their profession and treats their customers well, you have…read morereally found someone to be treasured. That is exactly what I have found in all the professionals who work at Dr. Melanie Vallejos' dental offices. For the past 19 years, I have seen Nora for my dental hygiene and periodic cleanings. Nora is THE BEST. She is delightful to know as a person and she takes great care of my teeth. She really knows her stuff and always does a thorough job cleaning my teeth and letting me know how I can improve my dental health. Because Nora does such a great job taking care of my cleanings, I rarely need to have cavities filled, or any complicated dental work done by Dr. Vallejos. But on those occasions that I have needed dental work from the doctor, I will say that I actually have enjoyed it. Melanie is always careful to make sure she is not causing me any discomfort. Just sitting there in the chair and watching her and Mara work on my teeth is like watching a master watchmaker and her apprentice build a watch. They are so precise and compassionate in the work they do. I always feel confident that my teeth are being given the very best dental care possible. I am sure, like everyone that Melanie, Nora and Mara have days when they feel down and things are not going their way, but you would never know it from how delightful they are when you come to their offices. A real professional group, who are truly a treasure to me. You cannot go wrong getting your teeth cared for here. But please, keep it our secret, because I want to be able to get an appointment whenever I need it.

Trash was overflowing onto the countertop in their patient restroom and toilet seat looked like it hadn't been sanitized in quite awhile. Ick. *Office claimed they all wear their masks all the time, but that's not true. A couple of employees quickly put their masks on when they saw patients walking in. *Staff that remained after 5:00 pm had no clue about what was arranged with staff from earlier in the day. * Assistant was very rude. Brought my family member out and made it very obvious she was not happy when she spoke with the receptionist about the next appointment. When I asked her a question she just walked off. I've worked in dentistry for over 27 years and I am surprised that our experience was as bad as it was. I truly thought that the Uehara's would have a well -educated and professional staff. Hopefully, it's just a few bad apples. However, we won't be returning.

Here to comment that I was an unfortunate victim of the Ueharas over a decade ago when they claimed…read moreI got 10 cavities in one year using their 'fancy predictive equipment'. My parents and I chalked it up to me getting braces off and maybe not brushing properly with them, but now that I see it's happened to many others...yikes. We should've gotten a second opinion. They took about 5 hours for a couple fillings they said would take only 1-2 hours and kept messing up my anesthesia. They also didn't believe me when I said I needed more anesthetic than most due to genetics and I felt every. single. thing. They originally gave me the absolute bare minimum anesthetic and I had to ask for more probably 3-4 times. They didn't believe me until they decided to drill and I flinched/yelped so loud that they finally gave me more injections. Then they left the room for so long it wore off by the time they returned and had to redo the process from scratch. To top this off, in a later appointment they fit one of my crowns so horrifically I couldn't bite down properly for a year and I've had lasting TMJ and asymmetrical muscles in my face ever since. In retrospect, my family and I probably should've pursued legal action, but it's so long in the past now that I'd just severely warn everyone to stay away.

I had Wi-Fi so I searched up emergency dentist" in Kahului even though I was going to West Maui. This place looked good and super close to the airport. While I was still on my flight, they told me they could squeeze me in when I landed. Meanwhile I texted them my insurance card and they gave me an appointment and said if I was late I could go between patients. When I got there, I only had to wait a few minutes before I was taken back to see Dr. Lena! She was so nice as was her dental assistant and the receptionists. She saw that in fact it was not only my crown that came off... but also part of my tooth! So she told me to make sure to see my dentist at home when I get home, and she took a picture to send him. Within a few minutes, she had cleaned off my crown and then she carefully and skillfully put it back on and cemented it. And they take Delta Dental! I paid $120 on top of what insurance covered, but it was totally worth it. The errand to come here from the airport only took about 30 minutes, and then I could start vacation. This is an incredibly thorough and responsive office. I'm so glad I found them on Yelp and they could set me up while I was still on the plane. Dr. Lena is super nice also and makes a patient feel at ease. Highly recommended, even if you're not going to start your vacation this way lol!

JUST AN FYI FOR DENTAL PATIENTS…read more.. Re: Hawaii Family Dental at Kaahumanu Center... Last month our regular dentist in Kihei put a temporary filling in my husband's front, lower tooth that was bothering him and said it needed to be extracted. It would need to be done surgically because of the condition of the tooth and the fact it was impacted, so they set up a referral appointment for Dec. 19th at Hawaii Family Dental at Kaahumanu Center. They gave us an estimate of a little over $300 for the procedure. We live on limited Social Security income, so started saving for the appointment. Last week the filling came out and the tooth broke off. There wasn't much pain except for the sharp edge which was cutting the inside of my husband's lip and tongue. We called the Kaahumanu office and they nicely arranged for the extraction to be done on Oct. 10th. When we arrived, the nice ladies in front collected $150 because we told her we didn't have the full $325 or so needed, took my debit card info and agreed to run it on Oct. 29th for the balance owing. After a bit of a wait, the nurse came into the examination room to take 2 X-rays, and Terry told her he would need Nitrous due to the fact he had gone through a dental surgery many years ago where the doctor crushed a molar while extracting it and, as a result, Terry is a "white knuckle" patient. She informed him that would be an additional $158, due and payable prior to surgery. Terry told her we are having to save up for the procedure as is, and couldn't come up with that much that day. Since we couldn't pay the $158 that day, Terry asked that the doctor just grind down the edge that was cutting his lip and tongue, as we had originally requested for that day, until the extraction appointment, so he would be okay until the scheduled appointment Dec. 19th. The doctor walked into the room, struck a rather comical pose and very snottily informed him, "I am a SURGEON and I don't do that!" So we left... with the broken tooth still gouging Terry's mouth inside the lip. We asked them to apply the $150 already paid towards the original appointment for Dec. 19th, then went home and used our Dremel ourselves to grind the sharp edge.................. since we AREN'T surgeons and we DO what is needed to relieve pain and damage! On Oct. 13th I called their billing dept and complained. I also requested the $150 we prepaid be refunded since Dr. Sahdev didn't do anything. After a bit of a delay the woman came back and informed us they could only refund twenty some odd dollars since the doctor DID "consult" with the patient. I informed her that was unacceptable. She said she would have her supervisor call me back. I still had not received the promised callback by the 15th, so called once again, after discovering through my online banking app that the charge had posted to my account on Oct. 14th, in full ($150). Once again, I was told a supervisor would call me back. Here it is, Oct. 16th. My husband still has a tooth that needs to come out. We've filed the sharp edges ourselves so he's not in pain. We are out $150 for nothing and their billing department supervisor STILL has not seen fit to return my call. Would we recommend this practice to anyone else? Absolutely NOT!

Whatever you do - don't go here…read more My insurance was expiring at the end of the month. I called to see if they could accept me as a patient before that. I took OFF work because they could only get me in for X-rays at 8am and a cleaning at 11am. I went in for the X-rays and the dentist said it looked pretty good, but asked her assistant which Doctor I was seeing at 11am. When the assistant Dee replied which Doctor (Nancy) it was the one I was seeing said, "oh no, she'll probably want to do a deep cleaning, she doesn't need it but she'll probably want to do that." The assistant and the woman checking out gave me the option to do the deep cleaning for $500 out of pocket total (in two phases) or to stay with the cleaning. As a paycheck to paycheck, I can't just shell out money for a reason that oh this doctor is going to want it. I opted to stay with the cleaning. They said, thank you, see you at 11. I came back at 1045am and sat there until 1115am. The front desk called me up and said the dentist will not take my appt because I've been recommended for a deep cleaning. I told them the other Doctor gave me the option and I was losing insurance at the end of the month and took off work today for this. They said Dr. Nancy and the hygienist wouldn't take me unless I did the deep cleaning and paid. Told me to call back and reschedule when I have other insurance and a new job. This is absolutely horrible practice, I felt like it was a shake down. I will never go back to them!! For a lot of people paycheck-to-paycheck, you can't expect people to pay and refuse service for a "recommended work" because one doctor will let the other "hear it" Avoid.

That's not the norm nowadays so I appreciate how well I'm treated over the phone as well as at the front desk. In fact, I visited another office that I would never go back to based on how rude the woman at the front desk was. The office is equipped with top of the line equipment and it's kept immaculate. The dental hygienist are thorough and I'm very pleased with the results of my cleanings. About Dr. Mike, he has a sense of humor and is personable. I felt confident with him and his proficiency from my very first visit. He is thorough in his examinations, and explains to you while showing you on your films, what your dental issues are and he discusses with you a treatment plan to include an estimate of the services needed before you begin the work. I've never felt any discomfort, pain, or anxiety while Dr. Mike is working on my teeth, and I am always pleased with his work. I just so happen to have needed to have very extensive work so I visited with three other dentist on the island, and although two others were quite good, I've chosen to stay with Dr. Mike. I have every confidence in him and his office. I highly recommend Dr. Michael Miyamoto :)
