SmartyPup! Is amazing!!! Two of my dogs attended classes, and my youngest puppy, Skye, attended their Day Camp (I call it pre-school); this was the best decision I made for my ten-week-old puppy! Skye was my second puppy, and I KNEW I needed her in their day camp for all the early development training I could never give her. My first pup, Luna, was too old for day camp, so if you have a young puppy under 13 weeks old, I highly recommend enrolling your puppy in their Puppy Day Camp! They make camp fun while keeping them safe, helping them learn how to play with other pups, and much more! Social skills, obedience, and problem-solving exercises help to make your pup the best he can be. When she left day camp, I enrolled her in Puppy 1, 2, and 3 classes because the consistency of what she learned in day camp was essential to her continued growth (and mine!). Skye also attended a lot of the socials, both puppy and small fog socials. I have the highest regards and accolades for the staff: day camp and all trainers are amazing! Skye just graduated from Puppy 3, and I'm so proud of her! I want more puppies to experience a little piece of heaven on earth at SmartyPup. We adopted an 8 week old puppy, and I had forgotten just how much work puppies are with chewing, toilet training, and getting into trouble if not exercised and properly supervised. I quickly realized that we were in over our heads and needed a lot of help. I asked several dog trainers I know in SF and they all said to call SmartyPup SF. The school uses only positive reinforcement training and specializes in puppy socialization. It's a combination of Day care and Day Training. The trainers were brilliant. We could see the difference in her confidence right away. She began giving auto sits, going to her mat, and seemed more relaxed. Her play skills developed quickly. She graduated a couple of weeks ago now she's in adult daycare with a wide variety of adult dogs. That daycare tells me that they can see how well developed her play style and confidence is for a dog her age. She was exposed to many different people, objects, sounds, situations and now has the curiosity to explore and try new things, without being held back by fear. We signed up for a class after hearing rave reviews about the place. Being a dog owner for the first time was intimidating and we were looking for a class to train us so we could train our new pup. The owner, Fawn, was our instructor. I was hoping the classes would be a little more structured but she seemed disorganized. The material we received online was helpful and most of it was not covered in person when we were in class. In a few classes we spent half the class letting the puppies play, which was nice but for the cost of a class I was expecting more instruction. They offer puppy play dates too which are much cheaper than the classes and I knew I could go to those if I wanted play time. I stayed after class a few times to discuss issues I was having with my puppy, and Fawn never seemed to remember week to week who me or my puppy was. This made it harder to follow up on previous conversations about my puppy's behaviour. Fawn also had her own dog at some of the classes, he was crated behind a wall but escaped his crate at one point and attacked my puppy. Her assistant came over and immediately checked my puppy for injury but Fawn didn't say anything or apologize. It scared me and my puppy! We also attended puppy play dates and those were awesome. I recommend those. Tyler was our host when we attended and he was great, very knowledgable. read more

So disappointed to write this. I have tried to reach Smarty Pup multiple times by email and text to resolve this, but they do not respond. We signed up for Puppy I Catch Up. 5 classes for $350. The final class was cancelled with very little notice. They said it was an emergency. A week later, they sent a mass email saying the make up class was that day in a couple hours. That simply wasn't enough notice for us and we couldn't make it. We were sad to have missed the final class and "graduation." I emailed and texted multiple times over the next few weeks to see if we could make up our final class since these weren't cheap. They refuse to respond. The lack of professionalism is disappointing. I no longer want to return to a place that behaves so rudely. That said, the classes were disorganized. She had little recollection from one week to the next what had been covered the prior week and she jumped from one command to another haphazardly. So a disappointing experience all around. She wouldn't want to leave when I would pick her up. The staff truly love dogs. The pups have monitored play and the staff spends the day introducing the pups to various noises and various large objects like wheelchairs skateboards etc. Facility- not a huge facility but it is enough and does the job. I love that you're able to tune in and watch the pups throughout the day. If you have a new pup, just do the puppy daycare. It's so worth it. Our pup is so well socialized and great with new experiences and I thank this program. Wish they had a teen dog program !! We also did pup1 and pup2 more for the socialization again and to allow our pup to still see her beloved trainers. We took Mochi who is a Havanese to SmartyPup because my cousin highly recommended them. My cousin took her small breed dog to Smarty Pup for their Puppy 1, Puppy 2 and a class to learn tricks. We took Mochi to Puppy 1 and Puppy 2. Fawn and her assistants are amazing. Exceptional and so informative on all breeds. Learned so much in these classes. We now take Mochi to their Small Dog Socials. Socializing for all dogs is so important. And the humans get to socialize as well. Pups have so much fun. Smarty Pup is SO very clean. It never smells bad inside. And it doesn't smell like bleach. Just clean. They're always right on it when a dog has an accident. We took the 5-week puppy series class. 5 stars for Kelly! She was very positive and helpful to myself, my son and our puppy throughout the class. 5 stars for the content. We covered a lot and learned a lot, in general. Some of the way the content was taught was clunky and challenging (for me) to follow, but it is a distracted environment and I think Tyler did a decent job, overall. These type of classes are general and since each pup is so different (with their own strengths and challenges areas), I understand it's difficult to have a one-size-fits-all kind of class. We've taken our puppy to two puppy socials here. They do a great job. The guy who runs them definitely knows his stuff. The dogs have two different areas - the small, shy and very young dogs on one side, and the bigger and older pups on the other side. It's up to the owners to figure that out. Goes pretty well. We can't wait to take our 13 week old back there again. One thing to know - the class is not too short at all. We worried it would be, but even our energetic Aussie is pretty darned tuckered out by the end. He's till playing at the end, but slowly and with tongue hanging out. And he sleeps deeply on the way home, the instant he gets into the car. I'm not one to write reviews, but the staff at SmartyPup were so wonderful and accommodating that I wanted to share my experience. Similar to a lot of other reviewers on here, our puppy had not been socialized or met many other dogs outside of her litter mates. As much as my boyfriend & I wanted to dedicate ourselves to exposing her to new puppies and experiences every minute of the day she isn't napping, work schedules at home made that a little difficult. But most importantly, our main priority (especially being in a pandemic) was to figure out how to socialize/introduce her to other pups since she wouldn't have her shots for some time. In comes SmartyPup! Our Joey started out as a terrified thing who didn't know how to use her voice (truly, she hissed in a corner when we first dropped her off and she was introduced to a larger golden puppy) and who has become so much more confident and open to new dogs, puppies, people, and experiences since her graduation. SmartyPup exposed her to pool time, hair dryers, rain booties, skateboards, and so much more. They also set up a Puppy Cam so you can tune in throughout your day, and see how your pup is doing at school. And the hours were actually reasonable - we could make it work around our work schedules! Drop off was 8am - 9am with pick-up any time before 4:30pm. In addition, we had to miss a day of school unexpectedly and SmartyPup worked with us to reschedule and find a day that worked best for us. I am very picky and hard to please - I will shop endlessly for places until I am 100% happy with something, and I don't have enough good things to say about SmartyPup. We've attended their socials and are currently taking their classes - Fawn and Tyler are so knowledgeable and their tips WORK. I've attended so many socials and been to other "training" daycares where I try to ask the trainers for advice only to get a shrug or ignored completely. My first social at SmartyPup, Fawn walked right over and advised me why what I was doing wasn't going to work, and gave me tips on doing it differently. And this wasn't even a class! Tyler and Fawn are not there to sugar coat, they are trying to make sure you and your dog are set up for success. They will not hesitate to tell you what mistakes you're making, and that is a GOOD thing. Classes are easy to understand and they really take the time to explain why this/that works and why it's important to do certain things. I've researched so much training on my own, but Tyler and Fawn managed to help me train my dog better in two 1 hr sessions than I have been able to in the 6 months that I've had her. My favorite thing is that Tyler will send follow up emails after every class to summarize the work we did and homework to prepare for the next class. He is also very responsive and willing to help on specific issues you have with your dog that isn't covered in class. My little one has a long way to go, but I'm looking forward to continuing her training at SmartyPup and I will recommend them to EVERYONE that's looking for a trainer. We signed up for a few puppy socials through SmartyPup! and needless to say the experience we had was just okay. The space is pretty big which on one hand is nice because it gives all of the pups a chance to play and run around; on the other hand the amount of space they have, in addition to all of the props (puppy toys, tables, wheelchairs, boogie boards, etc) they use, can sometimes be a distraction for the pups. I would often see a lot of dogs stop what they were doing because they got distracted by a toy or some other object. This is fine if you have a shy or timid pup, who maybe isn't quite comfortable playing with others, but I found it to be kind of detrimental to our pup who has a lot of energy and who is very social but had a hard time interacting with other dogs because of the way the space is set up and thus still had some energy to burn off afterwards. It kind of takes away from the whole socialization process, but I'm sure this type of setup can be ideal for many dogs. The classes also felt a little disorganized. The staff didn't really announce themselves and at times were very passive in handling the dogs or talking to the owners. In addition, the owner of SmartyPup! was very quick to try to poach my partner and I when we told her that we had gone to other puppy socials in the city. Her immediate response was something along the lines of: "Where did you go? Do you know if they're certified trainers? You know not every company is qualified to run a social. You should come to more of our socials instead." Mind you she didn't even really wait to hear our response, she immediately downplayed whatever other socials we may have gone to and deemed them as unworthy, which came off a little tacky - I know she meant well, but I felt like this interaction came off a little strong. SmartyPup! may not be our cup of tea but I wouldn't discourage folks from going, I think it just wasn't the right fit for us. read more

Puppy socials, classes and a day school...SmartyPup does it all and well. I have a now one-year-old cavalier who is a proud SmartyPup graduate. (Full disclosure: I have known Fawn, the owner of SmartyPup, since she trained my last dog 13 years ago.) Training here is all positive reinforcement-based and fun (for both dogs and their humans). I have a 9 year old daughter who has participated in many classes, and kids of all ages are clearly welcomed. Which is good since having a dog is a family affair! The space here is large, light and bright. And well, I have to mention it, it doesn't reek of previous puppy accidents. Parking is no problem in this neck of the woods. It's a bit of a drive for us, but seriously, we'd drive anywhere for SmartyPup. Fawn is a truly gifted animal trainer who clearly loves what she does. The rest of the SmartyPup staff does not disappoint. Lilian at the Day School is a gem. Sylvia, Martha, and really everyone I've encountered here is first rate. Her first day, she was a nervous wreck, and it was hard for me to drop her off seeing how nervous she was. But fast forward, she completed the program about a month ago and is now 5 months old, and I have to say she is an extremely well socialized, well adapted dog. SmartyPup! is the greatest place for puppies in the Bay Area. We've sent two puppies through the Puppy Play School, and I can't say enough nice things about how amazing the experience has been. The first dog we sent through the program turned out to be the best dog we have ever known, and now our second puppy is showing signs that he'll turn out the same. We're now at the end of our play school session, and I'd almost consider getting another puppy just so that we could just keep going to Smarty Pup! It's just that good. Enzo has learned good manners with us, other people, and all sorts of dogs. Now that he has had all of his vaccinations, when we take him for walks in the city and around the Bay Area, he's calm and receptive in all situations, and everyone remarks on what an excellent disposition he has. I know every dog has their own disposition, but we credit a lot of what a great dog Enzo is becoming to SmartyPup! I never write reviews, but today I have to because I had an amazing experience at a SmartyPup! puppy social! My 15-week-old puppy has been showing signs of aggression - barking extensively at dogs and people. I was nervous to take him to a puppy social because of his behavior. The staff at SmartyPup did an amazing job helping my puppy get out of his shell. In 55 minutes, he went from being a moray eel (barking at everyone) to being able to independently walk around the room. A huge improvement! The trainers here are amazing and hilarious. If you are considering group training, go to SmartyPup!! Cannot say enough good things about these classes. We rescued a German shepherd mix at 4 months and our little girl had a lot to learn. She was overwhelming for us so we started up Pupdog1 and eventually took puppy 2. we left every class feeling so proud of the progress Ella was making and felt equipped with the tools we needed to continue training at home. These classes go over a lot of basics, but one of the most helpful parts is how Fawn corrects your own training techniques to make sure you are properly communicating with you pup. We had no idea what we were getting into with the energy and brains of a German shepherd and these classes helped so much. Our dog has shown huge improvements in her maturity and impulse control. We will probably take her to puppy 3 too. Group training is what you make of it and the responsibility to continue training is on the owner so show up to every class even when you don't want to, listen and try even when your dog is struggling and I promise you won't regret it! read more

The whole Smartypup! team is incredibly knowledgeable, personable, highly available and goes the extra mile for their clients. My Golden Doodle Darwin was part of the 5 day a week day training program and has had a significant shift and jump started puppyhood with world class training. He knows more than basic tricks but is incredibly obedient and has created a never ending list of surprised/impressed. Being in San Francisco, I'm sure you are aware that 95% of units are not dog friendly. Our pup Darwin is an emotional support animal and is allowed to live at our place with very a very strict nuisance clause. When Darwin started having barking problems, Smartypup gave us an exact plan to implement to limit that behaviour as well as worked on him 1x1. In addition, they take pictures and videos of your pup and share them with you throughout the process. Finally, they wrote a letter of recommendation for Darwin as per my landlord's request.
