Inside, nicely decorated. The railroad motif matched the building. Halloween decorations were strung from the ceiling. Good timing for us. The café cleared out quickly. These ranchers had to get back to work. The kitchen staff is fast; we had food in just a few minutes. My usual. My wife had pancakes and an egg. Very good food, good coffee. The building is a genuine old train depot within a few inches of an active rail way line. While I was enjoying my bacon and eggs, all that I could think of was a derailment. A frickin' big devastating derailment; like you see on the national news. What if? Could we get out of the building quickly enough if we had to? And then it started. At first a low-pitched rumble. A little vibration felt in the floor. Ripples appear in my coffee cup, Then the ear-splitting train horn, a warning of your last chance to clear the track. That train had to be rolling at 60 miles an hour. The windows on the track side of the depot were covered. You couldn't see the train. Only the flash of the sun between each car as it screamed by. Each rail car had its own signature sound. Some smooth, and then an occasional skreich form a worn wheel bearing or locked brake. That's the sound that worries me. The clatter lasted a few minutes, faded, and vanished. Quiet again. Café sounds return. Tableware clanking together and plates rattling as the tables were being cleared. (Check the video and turn the sound all the way up.) That was pretty darn neat! A real railroad depot café, that features an actual train rumbling past while you enjoy the food. Disney World can't beat this. You have to try the Nowata Depot Café. Call ahead to get the schedule for the next arriving train.

In true fashion, I went with the 2-meat plate and two sides: sliced brisket, pork ribs, mac and cheese, and potato salad. Portion sizes were generous--plenty of food for under $20, which is a solid value. The ribs were the highlight: smoky, flavorful, and even better with the BBQ sauce on the side. The sliced brisket, on the other hand, was underwhelming and reminded me more of roast beef than true brisket. As for the sides, the potato salad tasted like something you'd pick up from Walmart--nothing special. The mac and cheese, though, was delicious: thick, cheesy, and comforting. I even mixed in a little BBQ sauce by accident, and it turned out to be a great combo. Overall, Smokey Joe's scratched the itch for some BBQ, but it didn't completely hit the mark. I'd give it 3.4 out of 5 stars. Next time, I'll swing by their actual restaurant in Nowata to see if the full experience lives up to the name.

One young woman was working all alone at this restaurant! So careless of the owners--not only bc customers' experiences suffer, but that poor girl! Nobody should be left to run a restaurant alone. Also, the brisket sandwich had the toughest and least flavorful brisket on it that I've ever had. One bright spot: the sides were not terrible. Save your money and go elsewhere for BBQ. Owners need to step it up and staff their restaurant appropriately and find someone who knows how to smoke meats. I don't plan to return to Smokey Joe's.

One stars are for if the place fails at almost everything, or if the service is so rude and bad that you can't enjoy the place at all. Giving a place 1 star because they don't have your kind of ice cream is ridiculous. Ok rant over. As for this place. It's got a good selection of ice cream. I think it was about 12 flavors or so. I don't really expect every flavor on the planet in a small town or it wouldn't last. Unless you're super picky, It's got something for everyone. The service is super friendly, and prices are very fair. Multiple cone options / cup sizes. They sell banana splits, shakes, Italian sodas, root beer floats, all sorts of candies, taffy and more. The place is super clean and very very nicely decorated. Maybe more on the girly side, but I'm sure if you brought young boys to eat ice cream, they are not complaining the place had more of a girls room feel. Seems like a great place for a group of kids to go with parents at any time. Lots of little things to touch and get their hands on, so maybe not so great if you have a grabby kid under the age of 3 unless you want candy all over the store. . They do have crayons at each table though to help keep kids occupied. Overall nothing I could really complain about. When my kids good at school all week, it's a great place to reward her with.

No signs declare its existence. My wife and I found ourselves there for a meeting with her coworkers, one of whom has been a longtime frequenter of this establishment and recommended it as the site for the group's monthly dinner. She had made the reservation (required, for parties of at least 15) and had also been the one to choose our meal. I'm told the business can accommodate for many different allergies or diets and that they have a wide selection of meats, vegetables/sides, and desserts from which you can take your pick. The dining hall is in a nondescript white building across from the main house. It is far from fancy in keeping with the lifestyle of its proprietors. As in tin-metal walls, concrete floor, and gas-powered lights/heat. Metal folding chairs flank two long rows of folding tables covered in plastic tablecloths; our party of 12 sat in one row with a few seats to spare. The atmosphere is that of having a Sunday supper after church with kinfolk at grandma's. The (rather adorable) children of the (hardworking) women preparing and serving our food played along the borders of the room and ran through the doors, the air ringing with their laughter. Drinks (water or unsweetened tea only) were served as we arrived. Once everyone was present the food came out family-style - one large platter or bowl at a time, passed from one person to another. And now what you've all been waiting for: the food! The coleslaw wasn't very good; then again, I'm not a coleslaw fan and so might not be a good judge of it. The green beans could've come from a can for all the good they tasted. And the roast was dry, tasteless. That's where the negatives end. The baked chicken was tender/moist/juicy, all those words that make some people uncomfortable when talking period, let alone about food. The mashed potatoes were creamy, the white gravy perfectly rich, the country noodles expertly flavored, and the turkey dressing pure cheesy goodness. I can't forget the rolls, too, which when paired with homemade apple butter were the best I've ever had. After a brief rest to digest, we were served one kind of coffee and two kinds of pie - cherry and coconut cream. The cherry pie filling reminded me of a Pop-Tart but more intense, which wasn't a bad thing at all. Typically I don't like even the word coconut unless it's followed by "rum and pineapple juice", but that particular pie was delicious. It may have made me a convert. I haven't mentioned the service, but it was fantastic. Glasses never more than half-empty before being refilled. Constant questions of whether we needed anything else. Smiling faces and good conversation. We ate until we were stuffed and several people took home heaping to-go boxes, yet there was still a ton left of each food item. On the way out I picked up a loaf of banana but bread from the bakery side. The damage to my wallet for all of this? $27.59! Yep. All-you-can-eat comfort food for two in a place that feels like home for under $30. I'm definitely going back. Just as soon as I can round up 10-12 likeminded foodies so I can make a reservation.

That's exactly what we did to visit The Pioneer Woman Mercantile, and overall, it delivered a really enjoyable experience. The Experience We planned ahead and made online reservations (highly recommended), especially when you're traveling that far. We arrived about 30 minutes early, checked in, and spent some time browsing the retail shop. It's well-stocked with plenty of Pioneer Woman flair--fun to look around, even if nothing made it into our cart this time. We were seated right on schedule, and our server, Tatyana, set the tone immediately--friendly, attentive, and professional throughout the meal. The Food Let's start with the surprise... Biscuits with butter & peach jam -- I'll be honest, I'm not usually a biscuit guy, but these were soft, warm, and downright addictive. Chicken Fried Steak -- This is what you come for. Crispy coating, tender inside, and covered in a rich, peppery gravy that hits all the right notes. Classic comfort food done right. Ribeye Steak -- Well-seasoned and cooked properly. My wife originally wanted a loaded baked potato (they were out), so she pivoted to loaded mashed potatoes--which turned out to be a solid backup plan. Side Salads -- Fresh, simple, and a good balance to the heavier entrees. Don't Skip the Bakery (Upstairs!) We passed on dessert at the table and headed upstairs--and this might have been the best decision of the day. * Pecan Pie Cookie -- Absolute standout. Rich, sweet, and unique. Don't leave without one. * Snickerdoodle & Iced Lemon Cookie -- Both excellent and gone quickly. Atmosphere The space feels exactly how you'd expect--warm, inviting, and comfortable with a touch of that signature Ree Drummond style. The lighting, decor, and layout all make it a place you don't feel rushed to leave. The Verdict Was it worth the drive? Yes. Would I do it again? Also yes--especially as a planned day trip. It doesn't quite hit that 5 level for me, but it's a very strong 4 experience with great service, solid food, and a memorable setting. @cheft_2469 Scorecard * Food: * Service: * Atmosphere: * Value: Pro Tips (Read Before You Go) * Make a reservation - This is a destination spot and fills up fast, especially on weekends. * Arrive early - Gives you time to browse the retail shop before your table is ready. * Skip dessert at the table - Head upstairs to the bakery instead... trust me on this one. * Get the Pecan Pie Cookie - Non-negotiable. It's the standout item. * Chicken Fried Steak is the play - If you're on the fence, this is the safe bet. * Have a backup side in mind - Items like baked potatoes can sell out. * Plan it as a day trip - Pawhuska isn't just lunch, it's the whole experience. * Go before peak tourist season - You'll enjoy it more without the heavy crowds. "Sometimes the best meals aren't just about the food--they're about the road trip, the experience, and who you share it with. This one checked all those boxes."

It's a great stop. We have been there multiple times throughout the years. To suggestions of course as you must go there to have their breakfast you will tremendously enjoy it their biscuits homemade fresh. You will truly love their biscuits. You most definitely have to try out their bakery. It's up the stairs, but I tell you one thing you are going to love it and regret it at the same time so many great options to choose from made fresh right there and you can even watch them make it and it's actually pocketbook friendly on their bakery items which I wasn't expecting. I was thinking it would be a little bit more pricey but I think about five or six items and spent less than 40 bucks in each item is a good portion size. Last thing I would suggest is make sure to see if they have any samples cause it doesn't hurt to ask and usually they do have samples coming out every hour or so so you could enjoy and even try it before you buy it So if you're here in that area, I suggest you stop in. You won't regret it. It'll be fun and a great place just to grab a goodbye to eat
