I have such mixed feelings about this company. Their product is amazing when it works and their staff are very capable and friendly. My reservations are that their Television and Theater system is very complex and if anybody plays with the specialized remote, it will stop working. It's so complicated that the technician needs to bring in a computer to hook up to the system to fix it. It can't be done by someone who's not professionally trained to fix their unique system. Add to that the fact that they are often very busy and it can take time to get an appointment depending on how slammed they are. Presently in my theater the screen is stuck and won't come down and the TV just stopped working all on its own and in the TV room the television is not working either. It has audio, but no picture. It just stopped working. I've called them 4 times. I was told by the receptionist I would get a call back, but have not heard from anyone. In the meantime I have no TV and can't do anything about them until SST finds the time to take care of me. Like I say, when it works it's great. But it stops working at least twice a year and their customer service is slow and unfortunately absolutely essential. read more

SST did the pre-wiring for our brand-new Lennar home, so we decided to go through them to purchase a surround sound system. When the installers came, they botched up the drywall in our ceiling in two places that are very noticeable (see attached photos). They also didn't bother testing the speakers, so we discovered that night that one of the speakers didn't work since they didn't attach it to the right wires. When I emailed SST to come out and fix the speaker and drywall, they said that our contract clearly states that they don't cover damage to drywall. Our house was only ten days old before we ended up with these very noticeable damaged places on our ceiling. Luckily, our builder was kind enough to send their person to fix the drywall damage. It took a week for SST to send someone back out to fix the speaker that wasn't working, but it did get fixed. We paid a lot to have a professional-looking surround sound system installed, and ended up with results that were far from professional-looking in our brand new home -- and SST wouldn't take responsibility for the damage that they did. The system itself is great and puts our nice sound, but the installation process was frustrating. read more

We puchased a home already wired with SST hardware. We tried to use ADT, but the hardware was so proprietary that they couldn't work with it. We signed a 2 year contract with SST but quickly found the system ineffective. If an alarm went off, It took SST about 3 minutes to try to call our phone number to check if it was a false alarm. After that, it took them another 10 minutes to call the police, so about 15 minutes in all before police had our address and info and were in route. Police took an additional 15 minutes, so thieves would have half an hour before a response. After our 2 year contract was up, I called to cancel. I was told that our account had already rolled into another year contract and that I missed this in the fine print of the agreement I signed. I would now have to pay a termination fee equal to all the remaining months of a year!!! I thought this was really dirty. No renewal notices. No warning that my contract was coming to an end. That's not how a good company does business. read more

We paid $20,000 for a package of services when we built our condominium. We could never contact a single point of service atSST. Instead we had to hunt down a different individual for each one of the services. For two of the services we could never find the right person. Finally we found one of their employees who offered to write computer code to integrate in the additional services provided that we would hire him to write the code. I have been a home security customer for over 20 years. I've moved into 4 different homes in that time period and used Brink and then later ADT for my service provider. I recently moved into a home that had SST prewired by the builder when it was first built. Researching the site we were intrigued by the smart home system and asked a representative to evaluate what we had and what we could expand into. The technician was fantastic, informative, and personable. We still had other home security systems and smart home systems to vet and couldn't commit at the time to SST without seeing what else was out there. Our initial experience made us call SST back and that's when the interactions fell apart. The customer service representative advised us that we would get an over 100 dollar charge for a technician to come and attempt to install a cellular antennae for the wireless monitoring we were interested in. I asked if this didn't work, would we be charged for the visit. They said, YES, we would still be charged if we didn't choose to default to their land phone based monitoring which does NOT allow mobile phone or app access. I was concerned about the yelp reviews here, the limited customer service hours they provide, and the need for repeat technician visit expressed by yelpers. The customer service representative Victor said that if we did agree to any of the services, we would be bound to a 3 year contract. I asked: If we end up moving would we still pay the difference? I was advised that we would owe the remaining 3 years balance. Needless to say I canceled my appointment. I emailed the company to confirm my appointment cancelation a I wanted written proof of the visit cancelation and I expressed my concerns about their policies and the fact that the customer service representative was more interested in these fees and the contract than setting up a system that would satisfy our needs. I asked that this complaint be escalated to their customer service managers and instead I got a response in writing from Victor, the person I was speaking to earlier saying that because the original guy had come out to do a smart home assessment without charging us, they were going to charge us for the second visit for the security set up no matter what. To be fair to SST, they can have whatever policy they want in place to support their business needs and I respect that. But, I have to say, that with the increasingly growing home monitoring systems available out there that don't need hardwiring, the potential home security service market share for companies like SST and Brinks is dramatically shrinking. Restricted customer service hours, recurrent service fees for system resets, restrictive 3 year contracts imposed despite the fact that MINIMAL work has to be added to the current intact system, and the less than helpful customer service responses I've experienced by phone and by email have shown me that SST is not a security company I'd entrust my home or family security to. Customer loyalty is invaluable (just ask any MBA graduate) and costs more to recover than it is to garner. I'm clearly a customer that gets comfortable with people who have provided reliable convenient service (just ask Brinks ADT to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars over a 20 year period). SST, all I have to say is... You need to try harder. read more

I was forced by the builder to use these clowns for the wiring of the new home. It must be nice to have a close relationship with the home builder who offers their company as the only option offered. I wonder how much SST paid the builder to get that gig. It would not have been an issue had the company been a great company or knew how to do things right. The problem is when you have a monopoly in an area, you could care less about the customer because you are the only game in town. The company is a joke. ABSOLUTELY NO! No, no, no. No. Here is the primary issue. When you have a problem expect literally MANY WEEKS to get them to address anything. I recently called because my cameras were offline, Alexa wasn't working, the thermostats were not registered in Alexa etc. So basically NOTHING was working. It took SST A MONTH get an appt to get someone out here. Then when they showed up they only PARTIALLY fixed it. Only a quick check and left. (One camera is so bad and the thermostats not registered in Alexa and Alexa not knowing any device). SST wants to drag it out for ANOTHER 2 WEEKS to get someone right back out here to fix it correctly. MONTHS TO FIX SOMETHING, ARE YOU SERIOUS? read more

I worked very closely with Brett and he was amazing to work with. He is knowledgeable, informative, responsive, and he went over and beyond with his level of customer service. I was able to get a new hard wired system change with new monitors and I changed my thermostats that I can control on an app. The SST crew were timely, followed Covid regulations by wearing their masks the entire time, they cleaned up afterwards, and explained my service. I've had a fantastic experience with SST. My home didn't have a security system previously installed, and the technician who came to my home took great care with the installation process and training me on my new system. I had shopped around for home security quite a bit, and their pricing and product was competitive with the other services I saw. On top of that, the technician who came out to install the system was funny, friendly, and seemed to genuinely care that I felt comfortable with the system and safe in my home. Most importantly, any time I've had questions or concerns the customer service has been stellar. I moved into a home with a SST system installed. I have had three customer service questions and all were resolved with excellence and care by SST. Appointment times are held, they are patient and willing to listen to your concerns and think through situations to resolve your questions. Most recently, we needed to fix a faulty sensor and during the visit the service technician renamed some rooms. Would never use them again or recommend them to anyone for anything. We bought a new home and our builder had partnered with them for the alarm and AV systems. They make it real easy to sign up for expensive gear but once it is installed and doesn't work properly they will ignore you and point fingers at everyone but themselves. Thermostats, Sonos systems, cameras - you name it. It will all malfunction and they will never admit to crappy work. Luckily we had one of their techs tell us that they install equipment that the know doesn't work and then charge you $190 each time you call to have them come out and try to fix it. You will be 100 times happier if you install your own equipment (Nest, Google, etc) . If you price out the routers and cameras they install you'll find them for about 50% of the price online (Amazon, Newegg). If you call or email too many times, they just ignore you. I bought a model home in Camarillo and moved in 2 weeks ago. SST send a technician to train me on the smart system but the system wasn't activated so he showed where all the wiring was so I could instruct the Time Warner tech when he installed phone, cable, and internet. Since I had to wait for a return by SST to hook things up I rebooted the air extreme so I could use internet. No problem..download speeds over 100 Mbps. Plus I have cable TV. The SST took about 5 hours to hook up lighting in 4 adjacent areas, thermostat, and cameras to an iPad control in the wall and remotely to my phone. Kind of neat! Didn't have a phone and bought one at Frys, plugged it in and had no dial tone in any of the 9 wired outlets. Did I say it was a big house? I reversed all the connections from the LAN and hooked them to the phone splitter and had dial tones in only 4 of the 9 hookups, but who needs a wired phone anyway? The thermostat didn't work for a few days I played around with it and got it to turn on for a couple of days but now it stopped turning on even though the thermostat says it is on. So I just wear sweats around the house. So far the temp in the house has only gone down to 62 degrees. The cameras at the front and back doors work fine and record to a dvr. I had already installed my own Canary security cameras and just need to put in either outdoor Canary or Ring cams which are an upgrade since they record to the cloud... there is a service fee. The lights are nice in the kitchen in the Great room and the kitchen but I think there were other hookups around the house for lights that would have been useful. No hookups to outdoor lights which is a problem. I again already installed Phillips Hue lights in all the rooms in the house which I control from my phone and have several routines fro lighting. Much easier. Another problem was hookups to TVs in the great room and the den. There was an existing plasma conduit for the tv in the great room but that was bypassed and cables were put through another hole in the wall behind the cabinet to the TV. Someone ran an HDMI connection from the Great room downstairs to a switch to a Cab 5 cable which then ran through the wall upstairs to a TV in the den then reconverting to HDMI so a bluray could be run on that TV from downstairs. What? The sales people still had to go upstairs to turn on the TV. All I want now is for the thermostat to work. I have my own cameras and lights. If the heat doesn't come on soon, i will call an electrician and switch out the SST thermostat to a basic one that works. Did I mention that the download speed dropped to 25-30 Mbps on the engenius access routers wired to the Air Extreme? Had to connect my wireless products to the Air Extreme which is good throughout the house to get back over 100 Mbps. read more

When we purchased our new home it was wired for SST security systems. This is the first home I have had that had a security system. It really has given me peace of mind knowing I have it. I needed to add some extra items including a new lock and camera. Alvin can out today and spent 6 hours installing everything. He took extra care so he would not have to cut any more holes than necessary. He showed me how to use every thing before leaving. I had reviewed them previously after they had performed some work at my house and I was very happy with their work at that time and I can only say they once again have exceeded my expectations. I was having an issue with my front door sensor, I contacted customer service, we tried a couple things over the phone and when that didn't work we set up an appointment for first thing in the morning. The tech showed up right on time switched out my sensor, tested it, had me test my phone to make sure I can see the sensor as well. By the way, the tech did show up with booties for his feet as not to walk on my floors with possibly dirty shoes. I thought that was great!!! I bought a home in Irvine with ELAN smart home system. SST is taking care of this system. I called to schedule an appointment and they took my information and told me they will call me back to schedule it. After a week I called them again and there were no record of previous communication! Any ways we scheduled an appointment for two weeks later! They work only Monday to Friday 8-4 so I had to take a day off and stay home to meet them. The technician was very uncompetitive. He didn't know the answer to any of my questions. The ELAN app is useless and unfriendly and does not give the user any admin right so for any changes in the system they have to come over again and they would charge me $95 for stuff like syncing their system with Alexa. He wanted to walk with his dirty shoes all over my bedroom so I gave him a pair of shoe cover, he wore them and kept going in and out on the dirt( new development area) with the same shoe cover and walking on my bedroom carpet. When he left the heavy chest that he had pulled was in the middle of the room. I wonder if he had any training on going to customer's house. I'm not going to use their system and will just get rid of them. read more

Purchased a New former Model home in Ontario Ranch. We were very excited that the home would be coming with all sorts of upgrades including cutting edge Smart features. During the sales process we were informed that the Elan system was not working but SST would be out to fix the issue before we moved in. This did not happen, which was not SST's fault, the builder did not let them know until days before our close. Once we had our keys SST made an appointment quick to get a tech out to fix our Smart home. The tech came out with really no idea of what was wrong, he had no parts or the tools needed to get started on the fix. He left and came back with a few new tools, fiddled around for a few more hours and said we would have to reschedule after he ordered some items. Appointment number 2 tech shows up, still missing some items. fixes a few wiring issues and lets us know he will stop by again the next morning and finish up. The third appointment comes and now all the parts are in. However the tech can not get all the cameras to upload and the smart app is still not working properly. The next week I get an email asking if a tech can come by that day between 1 and 3, which I agree to, as I want my home to function. No one ever shows up, at 3:58 I miss a call, later I find out it was from their tech. At 4:26 I get a call from Roger, whom is a supervisor or manager of some level at the least, asking for a chance to fix the issues. I told him his company has already had $ chances none of which they have fulfilled their commitments during. At his point I am looking elsewhere at my own expense to get these items fixed, as I have zero interest in dealing with SST further. I hope anyone considering SST runs to another company, and does not have to go through anything like what we have dealt with. read more

I was "drive by installed" - This has been the most frustrating experience I have ever had with a contractor/vendor. I had security system installed at my home that include a couple of cameras (front&back) a doorbell camera (Ring) and very high tech NVR system. The two guys from Smart Systems Tech who came to install were in such a hurry to leave. I got no explanation on how to use the equipment, and if it is not for me holding on to the original boxes, they were prepared to throw away manuals, remotes, etc...They were just interested in dropping off the equipment and to leave. When I called with a list of about 10 things that were either wrong or not working as promised, Smart Systems Tech sent the same guy who drove for over an hour to tell me that there was nothing he could do. ~ So, I still get a terrible echo on my ring doorbell, it has about 12 second delay, so when someone is at my door, they are gone before I know it. I still cannot use play back for motion video, the two way sound features of my cameras have a 15-30 second delay only when it is working. And the most annoying part is how the camera lights come on and off with very little movement. Light wind or very small gnats can trigger the lights. So, when a person approaches, I am no longer sensitive to the lights. The lights are going on and off all night long. The two products Smart Systems Tech used were Bolide and Ring... I will NEVER use them again. I bet you have never heard of Bolide? Very disappointing, as I have never worked with any company with this level of disregard. Unless I am home looking out the window, my security system is USE-LESS. - read more

We bought a model home with SST features (wired camera, automated thermostats, automated lighting, etc). SST has been out to our home several times to setup / work on our home network. They seem to get the system working each time while they are here and within 24 hours of them leaving, nothing works. This time we tried calling their service to get in touch with an emergency technician...we are still waiting for a call back an hour later and counting. Each time we are also told that the system is temperamental with all of our service providers. My question is what service providers do work well worth the system.... read more
