I love Smart & Final. The only reason not 5 stars is because the neighborhood is gross late at night. Probably the run off from Peter D's a few doors down..... Anyhow, I am a water snob, and I like Evian. I used to be able to buy in bulk from Price Club.....errrr Costco, (aging myself here) but they stopped selling Evian, and I stopped buying it in bulk. That said, I found it here in the Case boxes, and it's cheap. Once I started coming once a month or so, I started to buy snack stuff in bulk for my kids lunches. Now it is on my errand list and I come by to stock up on everything from said water, to cleaning supplies. I recognize a worker or two from theri old PB store. I think they are helpful enough. I like that one no longer needs to have a card to shop here and get the "discount". I also think this is a great place to buy for parties. read more

They have just about everything you can think of for a grocery run and prices are fair. They keep a lean staff so the place is not always as tidy and the lines don't move very fast when it's busy, but overall a great spot. Go here if you need to buy in bulk! read more

Smart N Final is a great alternative to the membership stores where you don't have to pay for a yearly membership. The products are high quality and fresh and well-organized. They just completed a remodel and realignment of the floor plan to be in line with the rest of the company. It's a lot brighter and wider aisles which makes shopping a pleasure. If I don't eat out I make it fast and easy and they have a pretty good selection here of quick and easy meal, and dessert of ice cream. The place is clean and well stocked, shelves are usually well organized and I can find someone to help me most of the time. I've found them pleasant even when I'm asking a dumb question or standing next to the item I'm looking for. I'll keep coming back. read more

Like for instance, paper cups for coffee drinks, English muffins, laundry detergent, etc., all of which are reasonably priced. However, the employees are not helpful and I know this as I was in line waiting. The cashier could not of been more sullen and hostile. Robyn-Ashley grunted and placed my 4 items into two bags. "Do you want a bag?" Miserable at best. The person behind me she knew and greeted them with normal and respectful responses. I don't want fanfare. When I come in and literally had the longest day ever, don't put your negativity and resenting thoughts onto me or others. I'm sick of being treated like this when I go here. If you're a cook by profession or a Foodie, you will love certain items, for instance, 3/1 lbs. block Sweet/unsalted butter for baking/or gourmet meals, Colossal frozen Shrimp that taste as if they were fresh, 5 lbs bag peeled garlic which you can process as you like - be it roasted, crushed or whole in a jar filled w/olive oil - does not have to be cold pressed. Key is to process it immediately after opening the package and Voilá, you eliminate the hassle of peeling! Because Smart & Final caters to restaurants, they also have a variety of cooking utensils and pots of many sizes, from tiny to big Pasta pots. It's a great place to shop. Smart and Final is our go-to headquarters for everything tailgate. They have all the crap that you remember eating at your middle school cafeteria, and lots of it! Since we roll with a crew of at least 20 people for our tailgate parties, myself and a few others are on nacho duty, while others are on BBQ patrol. We get all the nacho cheesy goods at one stop, Smart and Final. 79 gallon tub of artery-clogging queso? Check. Bags of chips that resemble the sleeve of a wizard? Check. Enough jalapenos to ignite a 3 alarm fire? Check. Of course, their speciality isn't necessarily nachos (even though the concept of a nacho-centric business model makes me giggle), they've got everything to make a party kick ass. I went today at 11:00 am two cashiers and no help on the floor I am told after waiting I needed someone to help me find an item I ask the cashier can you call for some help for me ? He's very busy of course lines are long I'm waiting and waiting so I go back up to the cashier hey did you call for help ? He says there is no help I'll help you when I get off the register I say why didn't you tell me that ? So I say to the young man your never getting off that register How can you not have anyone on the sales floor ? My boss asked me to go this Smart & Final location to check if they had the jumbo size boxes of raw sugar. He threw some money at me and told me to buy three boxes if I had found any. I laughed and said to him, "You want me to go to Fart & Sminal? Don't you need a membership card or something?" He replied, "No, they won't ask you for nothing." He was right, I didn't need a card. My husband and I went snooping around there later that day. They didn't have the jumbo boxes of raw sugar my boss requested so that left me free to look around the store at my leisure. I don't usually buy things in bulk because I'll never get through them before they expire and to be honest I wasn't that impressed with the prices in here. We try to go to Smart and Final for almost all of our groceries. For laundry detergent, soap, etc. Target is cheaper so we go there for that. A nice store, the staff is pretty friendly if you need help with anything or can't reach an item that is not on the shelf because of a rush. read more

And the associate Lauren went beyond my expectations by helping me trying to find chocolate zico water and climbing up the scary ladder. Another young lady helped me at check out she was very nice bagged my stuff and placed it in the cart for me and all, with this new bag policy a lot of cashiers think we have to bag our own stuff that I don't mind but at least offer to help and she did it all for me for that I thank you smart and final you gots are awesome!! My Mothers vehicle was badly damaged yesterday in the parking lot at 2:30pm. The manager was not the least bit interested in helping. I realized this is not the "best" environment, however the store has cameras. We did not file a Police Report so Smart & Final won't assist in finding the "Hit and Run" driver. I looked everywhere for *cheap* chinese takeout boxes for favors I was making for my friend's bridal shower. Restaurant supply stores, craft stores, etc and they were ALL overpriced (considering I needed about 30 boxes). I was about to scrap my idea for the favors until I read online somewhere that someone got cheap boxes at Smart & Final. I'd never even been there before and discovered there's one right down the street from my house. Holy cow, this place is ah-maazing. It's like a smaller version of Costco and a hoarder's delight. If you own a business or need supplies for a potluck, BBQ, party, etc, this is the place to go. Everything is really cheap and in bulk sizes. And, of course, they happened to have chinese takeout boxes I needed in packs of 50 for a few bucks. I think they ended up costing me 10c each vs 80c each at the crafts store. YIPPEE! There are rows and rows of candy and cookies there too. I couldn't resist and went home with a giant bag of smokehouse almonds. read more

I came here to pick up some party supplies for my daughters birthday. They have a great selection of tableware and serving dishes. I didn't realize they had great prices on bulk items as well. When I wanted to buy the 50lb bag of flour...and employee saw me looking hesitantly at it and said "I'll pick it up for you". She kindly put it right in the cart. Check out was fast and I was tempted on more deals in the baked goods and cookie section. After paying the cashier asked if I needed help out to my car (50 lbs of flour...) and when I said yes a young man promptly pushed my cart to the car and loaded the flour into my car. Not the cheapest grocery store in the area but their staff is the nicest. If you're buying in bulk, it's a great place as they have their club deals with the larger bulk items having a good discount. If you're stopping by to pick up a few items for dinner, you might pay a few bucks more. I will say though they've probably got the nicest people working here. I'd give them 5 stars if I could get my computer to to work the stars or 6 or 10 if I could. The manager & staff go above & beyond for the customers. I've been shopping here for years. Prices R reasonable. Staff is friendly & helpful. I'm a dog breeder & do rescue for homeless dogs for the county. I get the best dog food from them on a regular basis. The price is half of what famous brands with the same ingredients, cost. I've been using it for more years than I want to admit that I'm alive. My dogs R so healthy, they never go to the vet for health issues. My friend feeds it to her winning show dogs & they win consistently. All the dogs, hers & mine, R sleek & shiny. Before the birth of a litter or incoming groups of rescues, I tell the manager & he increases stock to be sure that he has enough food for my puppies. : - )) He totally understands what serious problems would arise if I run out & have to switch food, He even hides some in back for me : - )) because I recomend it to my puppy parents & rescue rehome parents & then they buy it & there's none left for me :-(( :-)) They don't mind my training my service dog puppies however I'm careful to be sure they R properly trained before bringing them. They pour my dog food into my large containers so I can lift 2 containers of 20 lbs instead of one bag of 40 lbs & always carry it out to my car for me. I also buy eggs, milk, soda, when it goes on sale, vodka (although Rite Aid is a dollar cheaper but I don't buy much anyway) & energy drink by the case which lasts a couple of monts & is cheaper than buying individually. The selection of frozen fruit for smoothies is amazing. They have an excellent selection of salsa. Be sure to check out the fresh frozen avocados. Reasonably priced, already peeled. Great for guacomale. Cheaper than fresh & much cheaper when they're out of season. I've never seen them anywhere else. Ask bcs they're kind of hidden at the bottom of the frozen section. When I broke my foot & couldn't walk, the staff took my order by phone & brought it out to the car for me. Several Clairemont businesses helped me during that time. They were the largest to go out of their way to give me that special help. Thx guys. I don't know if I ever properly thanked you. Everyone knows me & my dogs. I know them. If I don't show up for a few weeks, they ask where I've been & if I'm okay. Its like having a Costco crossed with an old fasioned corner store. It used to be more like a restaurant supply store (cups, lids, cleaning supplies, bulk candy, chips) and now is becoming a bit more like a mainstream supermarket. It still has restaurant supplies but now I find it a bit more user friendly and it matches my needs more frequently - kale salads, high quality chorizo at better prices than my go to supermarket. read more

Bad cashier, good manager. I normally don't go to Smart & Final stores, but a friend is a regular customer. She invited me to accompanied her while she bought a few things. At the register we noticed that only one was open (it was around 11am) with a relatively big line. While we approached to the line an attendant called a sir who was the last in the line and started to help him on another register; we asked if she was opening and she said no and we proceeded to the big line; less than a minute later she opened the register and started helping a lady. I then went to her and asked why she said she was closed when she was not. She mumbled that she had just opened and that could help us if we wanted and I refused and stayed at the bigger line, the sir behind us was as upset as we were. When it was our turn I asked the cashier helping us if the manager was present and she indicated me a sir. I told him my experience and the attendant approached us while we talked, he told her to go back to work, apologized profusely and told me that he would take care of the situation. I don't know what he did or did not after we left, but I want to people to know my experience. read more

I had my worst ever experience at Smart & Final at the Clairemont Mesa Blvd location EVER. First let me explain this is my go to store.. I have been a fan of this store for the past 9 years my main grocery shopping place. But the last couple times in the store it as not stood up to its standards to me. 1) Last night was at the store it was not all to busy but when we approached the cashier only 2 lanes was open. One being a lane for 10 and under items and the other of course 10+ as we drew closer we looked at our cart and decided to hit the 10 and under since just before hitting the lanes a customer in line 1 had dropped a liquid product and YES it had made a mess every where broken glass and product all over the place.. Cashier 2 looked at us and said 10 and under, the repeated 10 and under only so we looked down and counted our items and we had 12 items...cashier could not have known since 3 of the items was in a freezer bag.. she repeated again 10 and under only SIR...given a very evil look at the same time we decided to back out of the lane. We proceeded out of the lane and stepped over to wait for clean up on lane 1.. to say the least a customer behind us had 11 items heard the entire conversation between this cashier and us and was to scared to enter lane 2 since the cashier was so rude to us... about 4 customers had went through the lane then as lane 1 opened this cashier had the nerve to say sir you can come through now!!!! Of course at this point way would we even give this lady the time of day! I am a repeat customer at this SMART & FINAL at least 2 maybe 3 times a week shopping at this store. After last night it could and might be the last time I spend a DIME at this store... We arrived at cashier number 1 "whom by the way kept herself very composed throughout the spill and the behavior of cashier 2" she was very friendly and even tried to keep a smile. I had asked the cashier 1 if their was a Manager on Duty... to my surprise YES.. and it was cashier 2 whom was the manager.. POOR management SKILL's to say the least... CUSTOMER SERVICE in any store I have ever worked was the 1st lesson ever learned so your customer will then come back...This cashier/manager went far and beyond to give an ounce of customer service to not only us but to the customer with 11 items whom stood in line behind us. By the way I also want to mention in this store so many times only 1 register is open and so Many times I have let a person with 2 or 3 items cut in front of us to not make them wait for us to cash out.. read more

Since ive finally moved closer to one of these, theyve been competing with my business to costco. They have on special pork shoulder for .99 cents a pound, even if costco were cheaper im only a block away from this one. They are always stocked and have most of the things that i typically pick up in bulk, suck as meats, rice and household items. read more

The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is they really need to have an express (10 items or less) check out. This place is LITERALLY for the DOGS! I don't appreciate dog hair with my groceries!!! Don't get me wrong. I love dogs. I just don't want them in my grocery store. Three times in the last year, there have been dogs in the store and these were NOT service dogs. The first time, I complained to the cashier and he told me that he doesn't like them either but his manager won't do anything about it. After the second incidence, the manager said he would handle it but did nothing. I contacted the headquarters after each of those times and they said that they would talk to the managers after I threatened to contact the health department and I have to say that it's been really good for the last 6-8 months. Then today, there was a guy who brought a puppy in the store, who was literally dragging his puppy through the store by the leash. I talked to 3 employees and they said that they don't like it either but, even though it clearly wasn't a service dog and there was no identifying vest, the employees weren't allowed to even ask if it's a service dog because it might "offend the dog owner." I didn't believe it so I talked to the manager and she confirmed that they can't do anything about it. Please keep in mind that I totally understand about service pets and I would be the first one to allow and defend anyone with a legitimate service dog. But this store is so into allowing any animal in, legitimate or not, into the store. This is truly a disservice to the legitimate service dog owners. I guess this means I can bring my pet cat into the store? Or if I had a pet monkey, could I bring that in too? So people, feel free to bring your pets, any pets, into this store because they won't do a darn thing about it. But don't complain when you get dog fur in your food, fleas or, even worse, dog bites. This store clearly doesn't care about 99.9% of its customers but they'll defend any pet owner for bringing their pet in the store. (Legitimate service dog owners are absolutely immune from this report.) read more
