Smart and Final is always hit or miss at this location, but the latter is usually the case. Thankfully it is much better than others in the county, but not by much. While they do have great pricing on bulk items, you have to be careful and inspect some of it, namely veggies and fruit. When it comes to staff, they are usually missing in the store minus the checkout staff, which is always understaffed, so there are long lines. I mean it is what it is, but just a bummer as the brand and store has potential. read more

This is a very good score. i give them 5 stars. they are in a very good neighborhood, so the atmosphere is very pleasing. the customers and the employees are easy to be around. no one is rude at all there. i can spend an hour there just slowly filling up my shopping cart full of prepper item and not feel like i am being watched. it's a great experience. they also have all the items needed for a serious prepper. they have giant bags of beans and rice and flour for an excellent price. so cheap that it feels like they are giving it away. people like to complain about high food prices but I think those people are just shopping at the wrong stores and buying the wrong things. Honestly, ever since moving up to petaluma I have not had one good experience here. The staff and workers are all rude. Not one of them provides friendly service. We went up to someone to see if they worked there and they were stocking bananas (we had previously asked someone else who was stocking and he responded that he didn't) and he said "what do you think?" The costumer service is just horrible, no where else would a worker respond like that. He then proceeded to follow us around the store apologizing and started to record us because he didn't like our response to how he talked to us. This was probably the last straw for me of ever going back there. Unfriendly people and even slower and suckier service. Don't recommend this place. Go to safeway for you products or Trader Joe's, but not here. I recommend the management hire new friendlier people who actually want to help and work there. read more

Hadn't been in ages but need to pick up 3 items (nitrile gloves, a lighter and Dave's Killer Bread). I quickly remembered why I hated coming here. It doesn't matter if you only need a handful of items. You will be waiting 20 mins plus easily to checkout. It is a disaster and so poorly managed. I'm all for people keeping jobs but in this case, this store needs either more cashiers (so pay people more), even one auto checkout or to shut down. Every time i go in there the people working the registers are rude. Thery don't smile, They act like they hate their jobs. Their prices are great They are out of a lot of stuff a lot of the times. This past weekend, I placed my first online delivery order with Petaluma Smart & Final Iris because they had a huge sale on 2-liter soda. They charged me a $10.00 delivery fee and $5.00 driver tip (which I increased to $7) but I did not receive MOST of the items ordered. My shopper was in contact via SMS while shopping, and even sent me a message asking if it was OK to send .88 lb instead of a full pound of Bok Choy. They NEVER mentioned that about 2/3 of the other items would be left off my order. The driver brought the order to the wrong door on the side of my house when I'd given clear instructions to leave it on the floor in the open garage (he walked right past a sign that says "leave packages here"). I have emailed Smart & Final Iris about sending me the missing items, since I had already paid the full delivery fee & tip but only received 2 small bags of groceries. They keep arguing that I wasn't charged for the missing items, which is NOT THE POINT. So much for customer service - I will never order from this scam center again. read more

Not exactly like playing food jackpot at the Grocery Outlet but they have a good selection and prices can be competitive. Ribeye was delicious and at under $6 a pound was a killer deal. Got some Sockeye salmon too but wife said it tasted fishy. So win one, lose one, I guess. Floor staff were not very helpful. read more

Watch the dates when you shop - I didn't realize until I got home but an item I bought in the refrigerated deli case was over a month expired. (A pre Halloween date at almost thanksgiving) It was an item that should have had a relatively long date on it too which is why I didn't think of checking it in the store. The produce area - had to dig through the bagged salads to find ones that were not slimy looking inside. The edges of the wet rack in front of the stacked veggies could use a wipe down too. For such a new store they shouldn't look so dirty. The worst part about this store is usually the checkout experience... Busy right before thanksgiving shopping and they only had 1 checker open, when the line was long a second came and opened. Sure you might save money shopping here, but is that worth the 20 mins in line - not always. read more

I shop here after going to the gym next door. The prices on avocados are great, this week they are 59 cents. I also get the grape tomatoes for $2 per container. The organic beets are good and reasonably priced. Bargain area has some good finds. Greeting cards are $1.99. Lots of parking. They are hiring if anyone is looking for a job! read more

I've been in this store several times since it's opened and have even used their home delivery which ends up being InstaCart (more on that later). Most everything seems to be pretty well stocked and by that I mean you really never see much empty space as it seems they monitor the produce, shelves, frozen section, alcohol, etc., to make sure they are always fill & no empty areas. About the only thing that has a label and an empty shelve space all the time is Campbell's Homestyle Italian-Style Wedding Soup. Since the first time I went in there and every time after that, the shelf has never had one can of this particular soup yet the label says there's a space for it. Not sure what is up with that. When I came in the first week in December they were having issues with their registers. Considering it is all brand new equipment you wouldn't think there would be any problems but I guess it can happen whether it be an electrical problem or operator error. But on this particular day the store manager was at the check stands checking customers groceries out (I just happened to be in his line) and he would have to stop and help the other cashiers as they didn't seem to know what they were doing. Not sure if it was due to lack of training, lack of experience with cash registers, or what but it did make for a much longer then usual time to get out of the check stands. I've seen their signs saying that they deliver so I asked someone inside about it and they said it was their own delivery service. Nope, it's InstaCart. I decided to give it a try and order half of my Christmas items from Smart & Final and the other half from Safeway as doing it this way saved me money or so I thought (first time using either companies delivery service and both offered free delivery for first time ordering). I actually did get charged a "fee" of almost $10 which I guess is a per item fee (didn't see that anywhere online as to what it was or why) and then you have to be aware of the costs. The person who was doing the shopping text and said that the parmesan cheese I ordered was not available and was picking up a different brand. Well the one I had in my online cart was 20 ounces of shredded parmesan at $7.99, what was given to me was a 10 ounce container however this container was $4.99 but I got charged the $7.99 price. Next thing was 2, 2lb bags of carrots at $1.99 a bag, what I got was 2, 1lb bags at $1.99 each so I was shorted 2 lbs of carrots. Then there was the mayonnaise which was a 32 ounce jar, I put a comment on that line item that if it has to be substituted that I needed a minimum of 32 ounces, no less. What I got was a 30 ounce jar and unfortunately I had to go out and get more mayonnaise as my recipe called for 32 ounces as well as buy more carrots. And then theirs the last thing which was I put down 2 lbs of ham (not sliced like the deli but a chunk of ham) at $2.58 per pound. What I got was a $17 ham instead of $5.16 worth of ham. What gets me is "they" quickly adjust the ham price but the other items are not adjusted. When I did the survey for the order I put all this info and what I got was an email from InstaCart saying they would credit my account $3.00 not the $4.99 that should've been refunded, and by account they meant my InstaCart account. I don't plan on ever using InstaCart again after this because it's a big pain in the ass! So my review is not a 3 but not a 4 star review, more of a 3-1/2 star review for the store only. The above information regarding their online delivery service is not factored into my review star-wise, it's just an added bonus for you, the reader, to consider if you decide you want to use their delivery service. InstaCart is not easy to deal with, they do not charge you according to what is purchased by the person doing the shopping for you, but they are more then happy to adjust the prices higher if it benefits them instead of lower for items that are cheaper then what you have in your online cart. read more

First day of grand opening today. They offer many fresh veggies and fruits. The frozen food aisles are great - many selections. The service is excellent. Do not shop here. Take your business elsewhere. I work right across the street from here and won't go here anymore. I went in this morning to use my WIC benefits. The WIC program allows whole grain cereal to be purchased. The tag on the isle had a WIC label next to it. When I was completing my transaction the cherrios were not coming off. The manager then told me I was purchasing the wrong item and it was not allowed. When my APP is telling me yes I can get the item( I scanned it) and your isle clearly says I can redeem it for that item ‍‍. He refused to override it for me. read more

I have been using the Petaluma store since it opened & up to the last few weeks I have been happy. Late last month I posted a comment about the sanitizing effort. People were stealing the wipes, first by the handfuls than the entire display! I am aware there are some pretty dispcable people during this pandemic, toilet paper being an example. But it was Smart & Finals reaction that bothers me. They eventually put a cardboard display unit by the entrance with a spray bottle of disinfectant, paper towels & a SMALL trash can. About 18 inches tall. Not too bad except 1) the bottle was often empty. 2) the trash can was not emptied enough, so it overflowed, thus blowing paper towels around the parking lot. 3) paper towels were often missing completely. In addition the floors were so dirty, especially in the line for checkout, that I noticed a few distinctive spots from one week to the next! I posted this comment and it disappeared! Smart and Final did clean up their act, except for the size of the trash can, after I posted but does that give them the right to take down the comment? Regarding the trash can, on 2 occasions I have gone into the store and picked up a hand shopping basket and left it by the overflowing trash can. Over the weeks I have told the managers, checkers and ANY other people working in the store, probably a dozen times or more! Considering the urgency and importance of sanitation it is appalling behavior by Smart & Final. I am well aware of who's responsible for this situation and the chain of command so I did write to regional management. After a month I still have not heard from anyone, just the previous post being removed! It says at the top of the page that that never happens. We will see what happens next. read more

Smart and final is absolute garbage. Their check out is a complete nightmare. You could wait in line 45 minutes easily just waiting to check out. You are better off taking your money to Costco or even Safeway for that matter. If you use the just for you coupons and Safeway will save you tons of extra money. You don't need to go to Smart and final and treat yourself to low quality meats, fruits that are about to go bad, and the most stale bread out of any grocery store. read more

This particular Smart & Final experience today was horrible! The store was dirty, poorly stocked and then there were 18 people in front of me to check out by one checker. While my husband stood in line I found someone and asked if there was a manager That could be told that the line was all the way around to the back of the store. A few minutes later another checker appeared. Then, after driving 20 minutes to get home, all of the radishes I purchased had black crud running through all of them. I cook for 35 guys at a Sober Living Environment in Oakland once a week. I do virtually all my shopping at Smart & Final here in Petaluma. * I like the range of sizes vs. trying to shop at CostCo AND Safeway * I like the prices big time.. especially the "by the case" prices for veggies when I make something like sausage and peppers * The staff is great. I've had someone ask if I was having trouble finding something. I've had people "check in the back" and when it was important I ask them to hold a key item (it was a case of sweet red peppers) from the next days delivery. I've had people at check out be pleasant and carry on a conversation. I've had a person no only tell me where the bathrooms were but give me the combination. * the place is very clean, the shelves are stocked, and the parking spaces near the front door seem to always be open. * the store is focused on selling food and not adding a huge internal drug superstore like Safeway has done that has me exhausted from just hiking around * and, unlike CostCo, it's IN PETALUMA. * I have only two reasons to go elsewhere... I had to get 12# of ham hocks and have them cut into four pieces. That requires a butcher onsite. I went to Petaluma Market for that. The other reason: When I make something with sausage I really like to use New York Style brand Hot Italian Sausage (It's made in Fremont). I have to go to Safeway for that. I have to do that when I'm shopping for the SLE and when I'm making sausage and peppers or sausage and broccoli raabe or sausage soup or or or... I think the manager here has done a great job. read more

Are they all like this? In Petaluma I just walked out after cruising the produce department. Almost 25% of the bins were empty. Plastic bag dispensers were empty. Potato bins with 10 picked over potatoes left. And that's at 10am Saturday A big shopping day coming. I normally like this location. It's clean, well stocked and nicely decorated. However, I am sorely disappointed in them at this moment. During this pandemic most grocery stores have stopped allowing you to bring in your own bags for health reasons which is understandable however they are giving free plastic bags to help. Smart & Final are NOT allowing you to bring your own bags like others and they ARE charging $0.10 per bag. I've stopped in a few times since the Grand Opening. It's OK. Prices are not necessarily cheaper than other stores. Raley's has lowered their prices and now has things cheaper than Smart & Final. The weekly specials at Smart & Final are good deals. Nice selection of produce. There is usually a little cart of 50% off bakery items which is tempting. CONS: Narrow aisles blocked with numerous kitty-corner stacked displays sticking way out into the aisles. Whyyyyy? So irritating and I sometimes push them out of the way. Manager: Please have at least three checkstands open. Two is not enough. read more

If you shop at Smart & Final, be sure to read the tiniest print in the ads, especially for sale items, which require a digital coupon or multiple purchase. This store is noted for deceptive flyers. It likes to point out that prices are comparable to big box stores, however Costco has one price for one item. Sure some are bundled or a larger size, but you don't have to purchase 4, which does not work for single household shoppers or those who are space compromised. Smart & Final doesn't have any real bargains so be careful with your $$. Quality of produce is usually good & employees are super customer friendly. read more

Never more than one line open (Express 10 items or less) and everyone in line has basket full. The cashier will never call for back up and manager just stands around shoot the breeze. My boys and I recently visited this grocery store for the first time Saturday a little after 12is noon , it was ok but some things could be better, no one really walking around to ask questions 1 and 2 the cashier didn't even acknowledge me or greet me when I got to register, she just started scanning my groceries making me feel rushed and didn't even ask if I needed or have any bags with me. I actually was the one that greeted her ! and she ignored me not ever look at me once . Rude rude and really bad customer service I was really disappointed , I bagged my own and helped myself basically she just kept pilling up my stuff on each other with out giving me a chance to bag with time or caring if she smashed my stuff either . She actually just told me what I owed and took it and handed me my change and receipt that was it , No thank you or anything . I'm surprised at the low rating for this store. I think their prices are cheaper for the most part. They have a great variety in produce and my fruit doesn't rot or spoil by the second day after purchase. The store is clean and tidy. I rarely have trouble finding what I want. I heard their rotisserie chicken is very good and will try that next visit. I've always gotten nice checkers at the register. This is my grocery store of choice. read more
