This place has long lines to kingdom come! It's really annoying that only 3 cashiers are open and the lines are so long!! It's not okay, not sure what's going on but this creates a stressful shopping experience. This is a very common occurrence. Management should step in and help when this occurs, at least for a moment. So even tho my experience was a wonderful one! My 72 year old cancer patient mother misplaced her debit. I immediately called. The manager says no one has brought a card to me. I said is it OK if you walk around to the floor at least ask me what register something and go see if it was dropped. It's only us to hear. Don't go here. It's hard to get into because of only one inlet from a one-way street. Lot is too small and crowded and always has people who solicit you for money going into and out of the store. Feels unsafe. Store: dirty and crowded and disorganized. Staff: unknowledgeable. Told me they didn't carry the item I had just checked on their website. Then another told me they were out of it. I have been blessed to have a job during this pandemic, so I have been using Door Dash to order from local business to support the local economy... This Smart and Final usually has 1 or 2 items out of a 5 to 15 item order... they are constantly out of stock of items I ordered. I tried to call them to ask them about their inventory and the customer service girl hung up on me. I found out the name of the manager and called back and asked for Sergio Rodriguez, he wasn't there so I was offered any other manager. The manager happened to be the Door Dash manager. She was rude and deflected blame back into Door Dash as being responsible for their inventory. I'm going to pursue this because this serious lack of any sense, not to mention customer service is not okay. I was annoyed when I called, for sure. Considering the circumstances, it's not out of pocket. But to be hung up on? No. Not okay. We are ALL going through it and some more than others, but that is not an excuse or reason for common decency to go out the window! For your own safety, do not buy meat from this store. (read on) This location has the potential to be a gem. Its literally the only grocery store in this area, they have all my regular staple items, but parking is a nightmare, there is ALWAYS long lines and the cashiers are less than friendly. Not to mention, the meat is suspect. On 2 occasions now I've been shopping at smart and final and smelled a foul smell coming from my shopping cart, and to my surprise it was coming from the package of meat I picked up in the meat department. The first time, I actually noticed green spots in the boneless chicken thighs. The 2nd time, the liquid leaked out of the package on to my hand and the smell prompted me to inspect the meat and sure enough, that's where the smell was coming from. I told a store associate who gave me a paper towel to wipe my hand. Today, 6/20/19 at approximately 3:25 pm, I passed a woman standing in the meat department with a young boy and they were both smelling their hands. I had to ask. I stopped and asked "does your meat smell foul?" She replied yes. I shared my story with her about the two instances where it happened to me, and felt the need to finally bring it to someone's attention. I asked the young lady in the produce dept. to point me to the manager and she did. I went over where she was and waited patiently for her to acknowledge me but another employee did first and she asked, how can I help you? I mentioned that I was waiting for the manager and she said she could help me too. I asked her her name, she said it was Danikka, which was also the name on her name tag. I told her about our experience and she said that the smell comes from meat leaking onto other meat packages. It should not smell like this. There is a bigger issue, be it refrigeration or otherwise, it definitely warrants immediate attention. I will be reaching out to their corporate office, health board and whomever else needs to know about this. We deserve quality food and service in urban neighborhoods! Don't buy the meat! read more

I come here when I don't want to drive too far for groceries, but I wouldn't say it's my first choice grocery store in the area. The parking is always limited and the store itself is a little difficult to get to at the intersection it's at. Last time I went was to pick up some alcohol after I checked a few nearby stores for a specific bottle, Smart & Final had the best variety to choose from. During the shelter in place it seems lines have been longer than average. The customer service is meh. After search on internet. Here is the calculation for the sugar tax. 180 servings x 8 (added to 8 oz coffee) x 1 cent = $14.4. It's over 25 calories per 8 oz need to charge sugar tax. But most of these calories came from milk fat not sugar. Typically busy all day long and be aware carts area bit scarce there and can be difficult to find. Produce section is decent has the major veggies and fruits one person needs. I love Smart & Final, a solid four-star business across all outlets. I shop San Pablo, Hayward, Pleasant Hill, Pleasanton, South SF and Southern California locations regularly. Last trip to this location. Yes, they were out of some things I wanted, but it's S&F, so it happens. But the things they had were far more expensive than any other location I have been to. Carrots, $5.99, sometimes $4.99 at other nearby S&Fs, $9.99 here. And they were partially rotted on the ends. Canned beans, shelf priced at $0.79 like every other S&F, rings up at $0.89. I think everything I bought was 10-20% higher. I can't blame the store for things like half-eaten cookie packages on the shelf and smash-and-grab auto burglaries in the parking lot (prior visit), but these things don't make the overall experience pleasant. read more

The location is super convenient, and the store is usually well stocked. They also open really early which is great if you're an early bird or need to get things for your business at 6am. Unfortunately, because of the location of this store though a lot of people find it easy to come here and steal and that makes me a little nervous because lately I've witness the employees arguing with people who they catch stealing and you just never know if that will escalate. About a month ago the security and an employee chased a woman out, she had a big packet of diapers under her coat and they struggled to take them back right behind my car as I was trying to leave, and then the woman's companion rushed (in his vehicle) towards the employees and threatened to get out if they didn't let the woman go. Needless to say I felt scared that the guy might have actually pinned them with his truck, thankfully they left though and nobody was harmed. Anyway, the store itself though is great, you can always find great deals & quick assistance on the floor. To fill up our brand new "dorm" sized fridge, we came here to stock up on beverages. Where are the carts? HMMM...? He had to go on a fantastic voyage to find one. The Mister got himself some Vitamin Water, Crystal Geyser bottled water, Snapple, and Capri Suns. All I wanted was Capri Suns. :) Prices are reasonable. I think the 24 pack of Vitamin Water was $12? Either way, not bad. BUT MAN, there was this lady who was in front of us and she was seriously ON SOMETHING. I forgot what household item it was, but she had gotten two of them, decided that she didn't want them anymore, then decide she wanted one of them, but wanted the other one that the cashier put away. I like Smart & Final but I always end up getting more things than I need! But to think about it, I don't mind getting things on sale/discounted. Unlike other discount places, I don't find rotten/spoiled goods here. They have a few locations, and though not in the "best" of neighbourhoods, at least they've got parking and some have security patrolling the car park. Their prices are not always the best, but cheaper than other places, so it is at times worth it to go out of my way to go here. You do have the option of signing up for a Smart & Final Discount Card... not really sure what it's for, but just another card to have..... Would I suggest you go there? YES! Why not try it out? It's better than Costco in the sense that you end up buying more than you need (in terms of other things not on your grocery list), but at least it's better to have variety rather than being stuck of buying like 2 cartons of the same thing as you would often do at Costco. Now if only Smart & Final would sell the cafeteria hot dogs and pizza like Costco! read more
