Wonderful selection of healthy foods, staples, unusual drinks, liquors, ciders, beers, frozen desserts and meals, local artisanal foods and products, honestly so much more items than this small store should be able to contain. The staff and owners are all fantastic people and very community minded. They also have fairly regular evening events such as liquor tastings. They are also offering online ordering and deliveries now, it appears, and are open to requests for bringing in products they don't currently carry. It's like having a sophisticated European epicerie in the neighborhood but with reasonable prices. read more

I stopped in here by accident. The new Oakland location of Senor Sigsig is right next door. I glanced inside and saw a cooler of craft beers and decided to grab a few to have with my burritos. They offer single can choices that you can make into your own four pack! Very cool. The gentleman organizing the beers informed me that they were going to be offering local bay area craft beers along with speciality non beer beverages. He was very nice and excited to share with me their organizing techniques. They also have ciders and kombuchi drinks. Check in with YELP and you get a small coffee too! I saved mine for next time. Because there will be a next time! The cute little market also had a plethora of other items that include, vegan snacks, produce, a small area with other miscellanous necessities. The store was practicing safe COVID rules and asks customers to sanitize their hands prior to coming in. A big bottle of hand santizer is at the door for this. I love accidentally finding gems. Came in here for some alcohol while waiting for our Senior Sisig dinner. This is such a cute and tiny market. They have a coffee bar, they sell local beers, Japanese items, vegan stuff, etc. Definitely things that are aimed at the gentrified group in the area. You can probably find anything you're looking for in this market. It's a one-stop-shop! read more

Howden Market is owned by Spice Monkey (the business next door, which has recently partnered up with Señor Sisig) It's a solid spot for picking up healthy basics and discovering new food products. I peered into the window recently and smiled at their Laika Rice crackers and foam rollers. You know a place has to have an affinity for "healthy" - when you see foam rollers randomly displayed in the window. Not only does Howden carry grocery basics - but they also have a convenient deli and they serve up artisanal coffee. In fact - I believe they currently have a Yelp Check-in Offer - for a tasty coffee. From CBD Kombucha, RAW cold pressed pressed juice, wine, local produce, house-made sauces, teas, spices, darling mugs, gluten free cookies, and an array of other fun finds - Howden Market is worth stopping into. This is a cute little independent market in a nice area, where I can get a nice bottle to go with my meal. They have wine, cider, beer, sodas and more. They also have snacks and sandwiches. I haven't been here in a while because someone drove through their front window and there were some repairs that needed to be made. It took a while, and when in the area, picking up a snack, I actually missed going over to them to see what I wanted to drink with my meal. This place isn't divey, which I really appreciate and the people who work there are very nice. You have to be careful as you are walking through the aisles, because it's a bit cramped. But, the good news is that I haven't broken any bottles or anything, and I'm clumsy, so that's good! I'm looking forward to coming back when I'm in the area to grab something to drink with my meal. read more

A cute little upscale market that carries a little bit of everything. You could probably find what you need in this little neighborhood shop. I come here specifically for Capital Juice, I'm not sure if they still carry it, but it was a convenient location right near Senior Sisig. I passed by the other day and they are definitely monitoring the quantity of customers entering/exiting to maintain their capacity limit. read more

PROS: - Solid inventory of organic, natural, and otherwise better-for-you ingredients and items. - Cool stock staff that treat you like a decent human being. (Even if you're not.) - Accessible location in downtown offers an alternative to Souza's Liquor and the other random spots that smell like urine and sheer hopelessness. CONS: - Almost breaking your ankle (or doing the damn thing and actually breaking/fracturing/spraining that bad boy) on the unabashed plethora of cardboard boxes and random inventory strewn about the floor every morning. - Counterfolk (not to be confused with the lovely gentleman I always see stocking... It had been a while since I went to Howden market. For a long time their prices were super unreasonable and their hours seemed to fluctuate. But I went by over the weekend, mostly out of necessity and not wanting to drive further just to get some eggs, and I was pleasantly surprised. First of all, they seem to carry far more useful items than the last time Iw as here. Second, the prices seemed to be far more reasonable. Sadly I no longer live nearby but if Im in the area and in need of something, I wont hesitate to stop here! read more

First time I've been in since they reopened and it was a totally different place from what I remember. It definitely is more booze-heavy, which is a bummer since it was a nice place to grab a lunchtime snack and drink. Also appears to be way more expensive. I saw an ice cream sandwich that was almost $10! Same one at a grocery store costs around $6; quite the mark up. It's very convenient which is why I give it half points, but definitely caters to a bougie crowd. I'll likely walk the extra two blocks to a convenience store next time. read more

Love Howden market! They have fresh coffee and vegan donuts. Guy in charge is super nice and accommodating. I go in to grab milk and avocados and always leave with coffee and donuts too. Nice neighborhood shop and historic decor. Sad that spice monkey next door closed :( read more

Love this place. Is it weird if I walk in here just to hang out/peruse even if I don't need anything? Cute little neighborhood grocer with a lot of alternative food selections/options for those with allergies. We get most of our groceries at Whole foods, but this place was within walking distance to our apartment and carries a handful of our staples when in need. They kinda just have a small selection of everything- produce, freezer stuff, plants, gifts/knick-knacks, books, greeting cards, booze, kombucha, ready-made deli food, bulk, pasta and boxed stuff, cleaning supplies, a deli/sandwich counter, spots to sit and read and soak up the sunshine - all in one little cute shop that doesn't feel crowded, but honestly artfully laid out. The staff is friendly and like I said....I just like to walk through it- it brings me peace. I like to check out what new interesting stuff they have. Like they started carrying CBD kombucha and I'm like, "OK, I'll try that." We often forget that they aren't open on Sundays- a prime grocery shopping day- so sometimes our walks here were just a dry run. Parking is a bit of a challenge on the street, so I suggest walking here if you can. read more

Quirky neighborhood market which has a lot of flavor inside. Parking is both street and a narrow side lot. Both are not likely to have spots available, although people do come and go, thus every once in awhile you'll get lucky. The odds are however that you'll be parking a few block away and legging it on in. This is a medium to small store focusing on higher end organic or otherwise unique/healthy items. Due to the size, there is not a large selection of dry goods. There's enough for you to make/bake any given meal but overall this has the feel of "I forgot something and don't want to drive back". What this place has a large focus on is the ready to go items. There are various salad/tofu/sandwich/soup/rice/noodle dishes made fresh and ready to grab 'n go along with a better then expected can/bottled drink cooler.. They have an excellent selection of coffees for the coffee bar, and this is a credible espresso/cappuccino spot-including front window counter seating for ten peeps or so and two outside tables. Great baked fresh local bakery selections as well. Really nice looking and clean modern store with a small euro feel. There is a nice mural covering the back wall. Pricing is premium- higher then the equivalent items at whole foods and it's really easy to drop ten bucks or more here without really trying, and if there are more then three people ordering coffee from the one or two counter workers service time starts to drag out more then you'd like. Overall it offers a healthy quality, if expensive food experience. read more

Cute, gourmet-corner store with deli items, organic items such as Strauss milk, cheeses, sandwiches, etc...and i noticed they carry Firebrand products like pretzels... A solid little market offering up all your needs for a quick cocktail/dinner party, a quick lunch or just something to mask those bare cupboards. This market has 2 parts: a deli and a grocery. I didn't mess with the grocery, but they have sandwiches, pastries (that looked real legit), as well as prepared healthy salads. Definitely perfect for on the go, and since there is no seating, it's all meant to go. The grocery has an ample selection of meats and cheeses, crackers, and so on. I can attest, if you are having people over, this is an easy fix to get enough to put a platter out, and they aren't charging you super premium prices. They also have a large selection of your basic day-to-day needs: produce, cereals, spaghetti sauce, frozen burritos. The space isn't large, but it packs a punch with product variety. I love this place! The people who work here are wonderful, the owner is wonderful - and the food selection is fantastic! For a small shop I continue to be amazed by things I find here that I haven't been able to find in way bigger places. They have my favorite rice crackers, which I discovered here, and my favorite vegan ice cream. It's a half an hour walk for me, not big but not small, but I'd walk an hour to shop here! Decided to browse the store on my break and was utterly shocked at some of the prices. Also, there were no workers in site. As I proceeded to the door, I noticed I was being followed, so I said "hello," to which the worker had no reply. I can't make this stuff up. If you live or work in downtown Oakland near Lake Merritt be sure to check out Howden Market. The store has tons of natural and organic snack food, much of it locally produced. On my first visit I scored Sun Cups - sunflower butter cups - which cost the same as in Big grocery stores. You can even get organic Farmhouse Culture sauerkraut there to go with your chocolate (if you're pregnant or you're me). They make prepared foods like salads and sandwiches next door as well as house-pickled vegetables in jars. The market may be small but it packs in a lot, from staples to cook with to a really wide variety of ready to eat foods to go including a killer tabouli. I attend a few classes and/or workshops every month at East Bay Meditation Center at Harrison and 17th, which is close to Howden. Yesterday, Sunday 2017-03-11, I decided to have lunch at Howden. The salad plate I had was good. I gave a two (2) star rating because: - the manager sitting outside had to come in after me to tell the clerk to wait on me. - the salad bar was inside a glass case so the clerk had to put the items on the plate, I had no direct control over quantity - there was no cost per pound listed that could see - the salads had a sweetness -- sugar? - no labeling of additional ingredients such as dressings, seasonings, ... - along with other reviewers, I wonder about the freshness of the salads read more

I mean they have shelves for them that say "kale" "potatos" etc... but they are totally empty on like my trip to Havana. The only quip is that they have $5 minimums for food and their delicious curry tofu is only $3.99 so most often than not I find myself overspending at Howden. Mostly canned/boxed stuff from whole foods. Like really, seems like they walk 5 mins around the lake, pick up boxed/canned stuff from whole foods, then add 20% to it - as if whole foods wasn't already pricey enough. That's pretty much it. There's some aging overpriced produce, some hilariously overpriced stuff from the restaurant next door. Paid $10 for 1/2 lb of ground beef that seemed essentially all old smelly fat. I love the concept of the place, however the prices are too high. On average everything seems to be about 30 percent more at this store. I think if they had more competitive prices that they would still be profitable...u know that I would shop there more. The staff were friendly and the place was clean. After months of teasing, Howden Market is finally open. And it's very good! It's got a great selection of staples and specialities: milk and eggs; pasta and sauces; fancy dips; quality frozen foods (a lot of Amy's); and tantalizing deserts. Prices are generally comparable to Whole Foods, maybe a bit pricier on some fancier items. The staff are still working out some kinks. Some items don't have price tags, and some aren't in the system yet, which slows things down a bit at the register. But they're clearly working to iron those out. Plus, they're taking suggestions for items that shoppers would like them to carry, which is excellent. So, not yet ready for 5 stars, but well on their way, I think. Howden Market is a great addition to Uptown, especially for those of us who like near the Lake. I expect it'll become a staple in my shopping life. read more

I like this place. It has a small town feel in the big downtown city. I had the scone, single espresso and Bundaberg guava drink. The total was around $9 and service was good. I really appreciate everything this store is offering fresh, organic, Whole Foods at a reasonable price in an area where those things are hard to come by. So why 4 stars and not 5? The sandwich prices ($10) were a little pricey in my opinion. However I would come back because I love the variety of good fords they offer. Put good in, get good out. Cheers read more

Delightful and unexpected--makes me not miss being in San Francisco. Wish there were more little gems like this--a very small, very dense collection of the most flavorful and healthful* things on the planet. It had everything I had to search for at major grocery stores--and then some (I was especially impressed by the Torani syrups sitting there on the shelf)! It's a convenience store, though, and like most of them you pay for the convenience. Bring lots of cash (but it's even better if you charge it!). I'll be coming here often for lunch, and to pick up various sundries to help me survive the workday. A small but mighty local shop that carries everything you'll need from the morning coffee to the finishing touch for dinner. I was eagerly awaiting Howden Market to open as I work across the street and I find myself in there more than I would like. They have a great selection of niche items and a friendly staff who are probably sick of me already. Pricing is varied. Some items are very inexpensive, others climb into that whole foods territory. Overall, its worth a visit and is a welcomed respite from the selection of 'drug stores' that tend to be the only other option in downtown Oakland. read more
