Love having this Mediterranean Market in Alameda! Super friendly staff and affordable pricing. Buying spices here is a great savings and they also have a great selection of hard to find spices. Alhamdulillah, always wonderful to shop here. The clerks are super friendly and knowledge. The quality of the meat is excellent and the selection is very good as well. According to the friendly owner of this business, Al-Jazeera is Arabic for "The Island". This market is definitely a great improvement of the previous business. The market is very clean, brightly lit and the aisles are wide. They sell a variety of Middle Eastern products, fresh produce and fruits, breads, baklavas, halal meats, etc. Since I didn't have a lot of cash on hand, and I didn't see a scanner for debit/credit card purchases, the only thing I bought was three lemons for $1.00. I will return to purchase the chicken in the meat refrigerated case, the breads and other items. read more

Turkish coffee pot and coffee with cardamon flavor. Make your own from now on. Great deal of weird stuff like German sauces. Iraqi date molasses, lebanese honey, freshly baked Afghan bread, Iraqi dried dates, lebanese olive paste, brazilian corned beef, lebanese spam, and Indian rice. Find Turkish delights. Lamb shank and lamb legs, or fresh ground lamb, cheese spread, rice puddling package. Fresh baklava. Light on Moroccan. Sort of absent really. German candies and biscuits. Loose tea. Different kinds of grain (aside from rice). Well organized shelves and lighting. Very clean and selection is abundant. Odd location because I don't see Alameda as an ethnic town, but this saves me a trip to Telegraph Ave if I really want to get serious with Lebanese cooking. The immediate save is Turkish coffee. I make them now at home. Pretty certain it's close to Istanbul. Ah... I do miss Turkey so. read more

Oooooh, this is a good one! I came across Al-Jazeera market when I got my veggie fix at the West Alameda Farmer's Market one sunny Tuesday morning. Do you know the excitement, when you enter a grocery store that carries stuff you have no idea how to pronounce let alone how to use? I simply love it! And I found quite a few things I love and have never seen everywhere around here... I got frozen Manti dumplings, labneh (kind of a Lebanese cream cheese/yoghurt), super fluffy pita bread and some Milka - and already picked out the stuff I will buy next time (Turkish delight anyone?). Also - and this is very important for the Germans amongst us - they have German instant coffee (Jacob's Krönung - aint that something?) and a few German sweets and baking ingredients! The place is small and pretty packed, but every inch is used wisely. Also, it is very clean, I love that, too! Checkout was fast and friendly, I'm a fan. read more

Came in for ground beef yesterday and literally all they had in the display case is just one single goat kidney! So SAD! And then two teens/men behind the counter didn't even turn to help me even though we tried to get their attention... what is this??!! This little market carries a wide variety of exotic spices and groceries at reasonable prices.

I could walk to a Kosher market near my home when I lived in Los Angeles. I could ride a quick bus to Ethiopian and Indian markets too. Nothing like this existed in Alameda when I moved here seven years ago. I eventually discovered a Filipino market of note nearby, but I needed something more. Now all of a sudden I can walk to a Bosnian market that sells Southeastern European products, a discount store that sells Middle Eastern products and Al-Jazeera, a halal and market. All of this is happening along the same street, very close to where Alameda Farmers Market sets up on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Al-Jazeera is delightfully sunny and well stocked with Coca Cola in glass bottles, dried fruit and spices and halal versions of chicken nuggets and tinned meats. I can't wait to try the butcher. What a wonderful and culturally rich experience for Webster Street! read more

I love this place. I'm able to find some of the staples of Indian cooking without having to drive to Berkley or San Leandro. There are many different types of dal,beans,rice, ghee etc. There are fresh veggies/fruits which is nice when I am just out of cilantro or need a couple bananas or apples and don't want to drive anywhere to get them. They also have quite a variety of sweets and chocolates, including a couple I had only found in Persian specific markets previously. Other notable points: the owner is very friendly and helpful, always smiling they have pretty great hours considering most of the other small shop places on Webster (I've not ever tried to go at 8:45 but I have tried going to the Diaper Connection ,locate nearby and now renamed Sweet Charlotte Boutique,during their business hours and on several occasions there was a post it note on the door that they would be back in 15min or they had changed their hours) the store is very clean read more

THE BEST place to get quality halal meat and most middle eastern things. There is a vast collection of frozen parathas, roti, a read made foods. Also, I think they have the biggest collection of masala packs of Pakistan: Shan, national, and laziza. You'll mostly find what you want here. There Fresh meats, butchers are knowledgeable about different cuts of meats and every cut of chicken, veal, and lamb that I have purchased is fresh and the highest quality. Love this meat market. This is a great little grocery store! I have started stopping by when I need milk or some sort of produce and want to avoid the schlep to Lucky's or Safeway. They have a nice selection of produce, once providing a ripe avocado when I needed one for a dinner party (score!). They also have basics and a nice selection of Indian and Middle Eastern staples, and prices are really reasonable. My favorite thing about this place, however, are the thoughtful and friendly people who run it. A few weeks ago when I was waiting in line with a single item behind a woman with a cart full of groceries, the young man manning the register offered to let me pay cash rather than wait for her. Today, I went in to buy a few groceries and the cilantro was wilted, so they proprietor didn't charge me for it. That is so nice! I happened across this place on opening day and have been back a few times since. It's ok. They have an interesting variety of stuff. Interesting drinks, meat/chicken counter, wide array of grains/rice/beans, sweets/cookies, fruits and veggies, etc. But I have to knock 2 stars off for their employees. They claim to close at 9, but 3 times now my husband has tried to stop in on his way home at 8:45 and they are closed. Now it's your store, close at noon if you want. But if you say 9 - YOU NEED TO STAY OPEN UNTIL 9!!! I've also called twice to see if they had a specific product before walking over - and both times they hung up on me. Like not intentional, but because they either can't figure out how to operate a telephone or can't figure out how to get a broken one repaired. Either way, it is super annoying. read more

We sought this place out and stocked up on Arabic foods & bread. The store has great selections and fair prices. I wish it were a little cleaner...there was a box of (I think food) propping up the cover to the motors under the refrigerator. The hummus sold here is just like home, though! read more

Al Jazeera market is THE PLACE to shop for middle eastern groceries in Alameda. I shop here oftentimes and specially when I need an ingredient for middle eastern recipes I know that I can find it here. The owner is alway pleasant, courteous and very helpful. Once I was looking for a product which was hard to find and he didn't carry it at the store and when I brought it to his attention, he said he will definitely order this product . I am so happy to have a fresh, clean market within walking distance. This place is even worth a drive if you want to support local small business. Fresh Halal meat. I bought two chicken legs and cooked them for dinner. Delish. Loads of spices and yummy Middle Eastern cheeses. Fresh fruit. A much needed little supermarket on webster. I usually go here for meat (it's always fresh, especially more than at Lucky's in marina village) and prices are very reasonable. This place also has awesome international products (Mars bars!!!!!!!) and cookies/treats from all over. Great new addition to the neighborhood love it. read more

This was my first time in this market. I love that there are so many items that you can't get anywhere else. Also, for those diabetics or people like me with cane sugar allergies, they have a good selection of sugar free cookies!!! It's normally hard to find sugar free anything and I didn't check out all of them but they had, I think more than 3 types. They have no sugar added oreo's (not the actual brand but a knock off, they taste good!). Also, best price for Farina products too. I'm not from this area so I'm going back again tomorrow before I leave to pick up a few more things. The prices are good and they have lots of stuff. This grocery store is fantastic. Conveniently located across from the Alameda Farmer's Market (Tuesday and Saturday). They have an amazing butcher for things like lamb, beef shanks, healthy looking chicken and other more unusual products like goat. If you're making a lamb or chicken tagine, this is the place. They also carry things you can get in Trader Joe's but cheaper like couscous and hummus as well as staples like carrots, celery and onions. If you're a fan of Turkish delight, they have a good selection of that too. Spend your money here!! read more

This is a sweet corner market with many specialty items I love, like Bulgarian feta, jam, and spices, at really reasonable prices. I've bought chicken and beef there and have been super impressed with the quality and freshness. Next I'm going to try their house-made merguez sausage. read more
