The staff is friendly and quick despite normally only having one person working at a time. While there is indoor seating, most customers choose to order takeout. Pro tip: go in the morning to get them while they are fresh and ensure all flavors are in stock. The cupcakes are pretty good, but they are a little pricey for what they are. This is somewhere I would go on occasion to get a friend a birthday cupcake or thank you gift for a teacher. However, it can be expensive for a regular visit. The crumb was coarser than I would have liked, and I felt that the frosting was too sweet. If you like the sickly-sweet, children's frosting though, this may be okay for you. As the mom of three now grown kids, I've made my share of cupcakes over the years. After visiting Smallcakes today, I realized I should've been charging for all those class sets of cupcakes - apparently you can get rich charging premium prices for tiny cakes. Smallcakes is a very small store for very small cakes. Karen, the lady who waited on me, was friendly and accommodating when I asked her a bunch of questions about the different flavors of the cakes. I settled on 4 flavors, a chocolate with chocolate icing, coconut, German chocolate cake, and vanilla. These four cakes costs just under 17 dollars. As the cakes are actually very large for cupcakes, I cut each one into 2 or 4 pieces and shared so my friends and I could have a sampling of each. The cakes were good with a nice texture. Usually I don't care much for any kind of store bought icing but the different icings on each cake were all tasty. My favorite was probably the German chocolate cake with the coconuty icing. The presentation of the cakes is very upscale nice, right down to a classy looking box with added insert to keep each cake separate. You could easily give one of these little boxes as a special hostess gift or just a small "I love/appreciate you" type offering. I have been to this place more than once, this might be the last straw. While eating my chocolate cream cupcake I found this fine, blonde/gray hair. I know it isn't mine because I have thick black hair. I used to live and Columbia and the Smallcakes there is amazing, the cakes are great and each one is done with care and intention. This store has a smaller selection, each cake has different frosting amounts and they aren't done as well. I'll also mention that the Columbia store has the punch ticket option to earn a free cupcake. This store doesn't. Overall, finding the hair has confirmed that I will not be back. read more

I have to say I was quite disappointed with this place. This place is a really nice spot presentation is on point and the prices are right. However, the cupcakes were just not up to part. They had a variety of cupcakes that looked very appealing. I ordered the cookies and cream, red velvet and lemon cupcakes. They all were okay nothing special or to go crazy about. The cakes them self were light but dry and all of the butter cream Icings were not flavorful taste more like powder sugar then anything else. I would not come here again I believe that the other cupcake place I went to in Kansas City were better. Cute place with delicious cupcakes. The flavors are pretty classic, but there's nothing wrong with that. If you make good lemon cupcake (which they do) you don't need to create anything odd or bonkers to get attention. I ordered a pink chocolate (chocolate cake with pink buttercream frosting), peanut butter chocolate (chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream frosting and a little peanut butter chocolate candy on top), lemon (lemon cake with lemon buttercream frosting with a lemon candy on top), and chocolate cream (chocolate cake with vanilla fluff inside and chocolate frosting). The cupcakes were HUGE, delicious and had just the right amount of richness. They weren't like air but I wasn't wiping a film of grease off of my lips, either. I would have liked a little bit more texture in the cupcakes, especially in the cake batter. Some chocolate chips, pieces of peanut butter, or some lemon curd going throughout the cake would have made the cupcakes a little more fun to eat and given the cake a little more flavor. But otherwise, they hit the dessert spot. Smallcakes is a nice addition to Parkville. It'd be a great place to hit up after dinner or if you're looking for a treat after walking around town. read more

This is the most overpriced BS I've ever witnessed. First, I walk into a shop that is completely devoid of any customers. I pay around $20 for (what I'm told) is six cupcakes. I get home, make dinner, open the box to surprise my family, and find...only five cupcakes. Not six. Which means I've just spent roughly $4 per cupcake for everyone to have one except for me. When I called the store to let them know their mistake, I encountered a "this mailbox is full and cannot take messages" recording. Big surprise. This is a chain and I won't be back. My boss insisted I buy for a thank you gift for another at work so bought two for myself; again, how is this place in business? One of the cupcakes we'd ordered was out, and the lady apologized profusely and gave us two free day-olds and replaced the missing flavor with something else. Our guests were really excited at all the variety, and everything I sampled was great. I had parts of the PB&J, Decadent Fudge, and Peanut Butter Cup. I am docking them one star because there was almost too much frosting on some of them--namely, the birthday cake cupcake with sprinkles. The ratio of cupcake-to-frosting was a little off on those. Delicious!!! Went in on a Thursday afternoon and they had a special, buy 3 get 1 free. Umm... Sign me up! Took the four back and hit the road. Had to taste one before we got home. We decided on the Red Velvet-thought it might be the least favorite. We'll... Turns out it was Da Bomb. Frosting on top was top notch delicious and the cake portion was very moist and fresh. Haven't tried the other three yet but based on the red velvet awesomeness, the fabulous greeting and explanation of the cupcakes they had on display (by the young worker) and the cute feel of the bakery inside, this place is excellent. The frosting is amazing. They have regular flavors every day, but i usually go in just to see what their specialty cupcakes of the day are. Best option for baked good in Parkville. I'm not a big fan of buttercream frosting but they have several cupcakes in rotation with whipped frosting, and I do like the cream cheese frosting. The cupcakes are pretty but they could improve the flavors of the actual cupcake. I expect the cake to at least stand up to the strong flavor of the frosting so that is something they could improve on. The flavor like pineapple and carrot that I tried had very weak flavor.
