Purchased a new briggs stratton 17 hp to replace the kawasaki on my old j deere 240 garden tractor The stator was installed incorrectly without the spacing ring and the lead wire frayed and shorted everything Because it didn't happen during the 1 year warranty I got stuck paying for their incompetence A new battery, because I assumed it wasn't charging a replacement stator at full price plus shipping and labor Close to $400 all together plus a lot of time wasted. Our shop has ordered many engines from this company of all brands. All the V twin Briggs (25hp) we ordered are NOS engines. Everyone of them have been damaged because the company does not inspect them before shipping, smashed vale cover, broken starters, smashed shrouding etc. They blame the shipping company but in reality they are not checking them because the boxes show zero damage. Company sends out replacement parts but wont compensate labor cost for repairs.(if you buy an engine from Briggs they compensate labor rates for repairs). Requires more invested time for replacements going through the return process, causing customer wait times to extend, requires us to package and sometime transport to shipper. Shipping material and labor is not free! All the v twin Briggs we have installed for our customers have prematurely failed or have had costly repairs in a matter of one year in service. Small Engine Warehouse will not stand behind them. Briggs and Stratton gives our shop problems for warranty because there old surplus engines. We are a shop that has spent 10's of thousands with this company, and it does not seem to matter with Small Engine Warehouse. When we sent the company a invoice for our lost time caused by them they blew us off. We wont be spending another dime with this company. We will pay a small higher price and purchase from manufacturer distributors because they understand our time is not free for someone else's in lack of. read more

I have found that to be far from the truth, they never return emails, they don't do anything that they say. They don't have any wiring diagrams and can't answer any questions. Ordered a part on their eBay store. Item was shipped in reasonable time. Tracking showed item as delivered, I checked within 30 min, however it wasn't there, nor was it in the neighbor's boxes. I waited several days to see if it would arrive. When it didn't, I contacted seller who advised me to contact shipper. I called USPS and gave them the tracking info. I never received a return call. I contacted the seller again, who advised me to go to USPS with the tracking number as they could track the package with GPS. As I don't have time to take off work & go to the PO, I appealed to eBay and was denied. I'm sure if you have a positive experience with this co it will be fine. If you have an issue, their customer service is terrible & you may end up paying for something & not receiving it like I did. They don't have any interest in solving issues. Buyer Beware! read more

I am not giving 5 stars because there was a long delay on their end, which was apparently an internal communication error. Do not buy from these people. Ordered an engine for my 175 John Deere. Was assured it was a drop-in replacement, WRONG. not even close, nothing lined up, wanted to return it, that is when the Sh7t show started. I returned it on Fed ex, supposedly when they received it the box was ''damaged'' resulting in over $200 in damage, to the engine FUNNY THING no damage report logged with FED EX. My Toro Grandstand Kawasaki disasters engines once again failed both again low hours. Burned oil all the life of this Japanese disaster engine that the put a three year warranty and do not honor warranty claims!! So I repowered the Toro Grandstand disaster with a Briggs and Stratton Vanguard engine. Works great!! Thanks for the great work Small Engine Warehouse!! Second engine repower on commercial mowers!! I ordered the JD 400 Briggs Vangaurd repower kit at 9AM or so Monday 14th, Tuesday 9:30AM the 15th I had the kit. With about 5-6 hours installation, the kit was in place. Thursday AM16th I mowed the yard. My lawnmower had the engine out and everything put away when the engine arrived. Had I known it would be delivered that quick, and left the tools out, it would have been installed an hour quicker. I read all the negatives about communications from this company. I made a call a few hours after the purchase to properly have the mower ready for the install. After a shuffle I got information. I then called to talk to Seth, he returned the call twice in a fairly timely fashion. I could not receive the calls on my end, not his fault. As far as being left hanging like others have stated, that was not my case! Would I buy another? I might buy another before the day is over. YES! read more

Bought the 35HP Vanguard (613477-Bobcat-610-R6) to replace a dead Wisconsin VH4D in an old Bobcat M610 skid steer. New engine's been in there for six months, used roughly twice per week on my forested property in CT running attachments from a bucket & log grapple to a Titan excavator attachment and a homemade log splitter attachment. Plenty of good & bad parts about the new engine. The good: Arrived at my home in fine shape. It went into the machine fine. It fits, engine mounting holes line up, new pulley setup driving the hydraulic pump lines up where it should, variable speed sheave went on fine, drive belt lines up with the driven sheave on the jackshafts. Wiring the electrical went fine. New choke control fit perfectly. Seems fine in warm & cold weather. The bad: A longer list than I'd hoped for, but at the end of the day, this engine did resurrect an otherwise deceased machine. - The new belt-driven system for the hydraulic pump that came per-assembled on the front side of the engine SHREDDED its two Kevlar-lined V-belts in six months. Finally figured out it was because the tensioning pulley that was installed at the factory had a 1/2" spacer on the WRONG damn side of the pulley, so it was pushing the belts WAY out of alignment. And after I fixed that, I needed a belt size 1" shorter than what was on there previously. - The engine's underpowered and underweight. Full throttle (3700rpm) feels like about 80% of what the VH4D had, and the machine is much more front-heavy and likely to tip over. A little inductive tachometer is a worthwhile investment to keep the engine running in its sweet spot. - The throttle cable assembly they sent was a joke. Just a 5ft piece of standard control wire with no fittings to attach the ends to the throttle control either on the carburetor or the hand lever. Honestly I've spent more time fighting the damn throttle control than almost anything else. Attaching it to the little lever on the carb end interferes with the governor spring movement. Gah. Even with the issues above, I'm still glad I bought the engine. I'm especially irked by the tension pulley & throttle cable, but I think I've finally fixed those. And I've got my Bobcat back. read more

I recently had a great experience with the Small Engine Warehouse. My Dad needed a new Briggs and Stratton engine for a 15 year old craftsman log splitter with an odd shaft length and only a three bolt pattern versus four. I tried to find something compatible searching high and low through Briggs catalogs, web sites and thought I found a few good options for $350 on Amazon. I called 3 places before spending that much to see what they thought and S.E.W. instantly had a model number and it was listed for only $115. I was hesitant because they came up with the model so quickly and everyone said they couldn't find a compatible engine for me. Needless to say the bolt pattern was identical and the odd 1-13/16" shaft was a perfect length like the original. It arrived from Fedex in no time and is up and running in minutes. I'm very happy that they not only sold me a good priced replacement motor but they knew which motor I needed when other large engine warehouses had no idea. I'll be back if need be in the future. After salesman Bruce Buchanan sent me a broken engine with missing parts he ignored my requests for assistance and no longer responded to my emails or phone calls. I sent a complaint to Better business bureau and they did nothing as well. The company has repeatedly lied and stolen from their customers. Once the transaction is complete they can care less about their customer service and their fake warranty which covers nothing. I ordered three of these innertubed tires: http://www.smallenginewarehouse.com/t9x3-50-4-Ken2.html. The position of the valve stem is critical to their use, and the photo on their website shows it with the stem pointed off to the side. That's what I ordered, but not what I received. One they got right. Two of them had the stems centered, which makes them useless. I very politely explained my issue in an email exchange, with pictures, to which I was immediately told that if I wanted a special fit, they couldn't help me. Case closed. Here is the last bit of their email to me: "...I would think if you need them special to fit your rims you would have call in and spoke with the parts department. I don't how what I can do at this point. Mark Winningham Technical Support Manager and Master Service Technician" How about walk down the aisle of your warehouse and look for the product I need? There's a start, genius. This is the "Master Service Technician" we're talking about here. I finally called in and got connected to him by phone. He told me that since they don't make a lot of money from these, he couldn't help me get the right product, but had I called the sales people and specifically told them about this issue ahead of time, then they might have been able to get me the right ones. What a joke! It's not about the money; I couldn't care less about $30 worth of rubber. It's the principle of doing business this way that bothers me. They did give me the option of sending the items back for a refund. That is, after I pay shipping both ways, which is the same amount as the items themselves, so I might as well keep them as dog chew toys. I have bought a few engines from this company, the last engine i purchased was a Honda engine. I called to tell them it did not fit my Honda mower. After being hung up on once, i was told that Our "Honda Engines DO NOT fit Honda equipment. You have to go to Honda for that." Great, so now i am stuck paying shipping and a hefty $40 restock fee. Apparently this is how they make their money, deception. Why would you not disclose that to the average joe? I have my own Small Engine Repair shop and i did not know that. I do now, NO More Hondas at my shop, and NO More engines ordered from Small Engine Warehouse. Save yourself the grief, order Elsewhere. Update: After getting approved for return of my engine that wont fit my lawnmower i find out i have a $40 restock fee and $142.00 to ship it back at my expense. $182.00 to return, do the math-$258.00 to buy the Engine, $182.00 to return-I get a $76 return on my $258.00 investment. I now have a 60 Pound paperweight on my bench to remind me to never order from this company again. Sad as i have several machines to repower, any advise on good companies is welcomed. read more

Most people write reviews because of the poor customer service. My experience was quite the opposite. Stuart was very helpful in advising me as to which Briggs & Stratton engine would be a drop in replacement with no modifications needed and he was right on. I received the engine three days after placing the order. When I opened the cardboard box that the engine was shipped in I observed that it had sustained shipping damage. The plastic blower housing covering the top of engine was broken and the plastic air cleaner cover was cracked. It was about 5:30 pm and Small Engine Warehouse was closed for the day but I still emailed Stuart about the problem. Stuart had responded to my email before 7:15 am the next morning. I contacted him about 7:30 am and less than three hours later I received an email that the replacement parts had been shipped and at no cost. Customer service does not get much better than that. Bought a Kawasaki FD750 "drop in" replacment for my John Deere 425. It was anything but "drop in". I get the impression that a couple college kids stood around with the design phase and dropped in a motor....scribed some lines with a sharpie.....drilled a few holes and called it good. 1)The mounting holes were all off. 2) The wiring harness was wired backwards 3) the radiator hoses were way too big 4) the muffler outlet wasn't positioned right, so consequently burned the plastic side of body 5) the choke cable does not have enough travel to fully activate choke. 6) the float in carburetor sticks open letting raw fuel full the cylinders if the key is on but the engine is not running. 7) poor technical service. Needless to say, I had to do a lot of modifying to get this to work correctly. Steve in Tech support said he would hook me up with the proper fixes after I emailed many times and attached lots of photos. Never heard back from him. Last time I buy from these yahoos. read more

Bought a Briggs & Stratton Vanguard engine to replace the Kawasaki in my John Deere gator. It was supposed to be a straight swap, but ended up needing longer clutch bolts, which didn't come with it. It was sold to me as being specifically prepped for this use, so I lost the gator for an additional week and a half waiting to get the bolts. I sent them an email and never heard back. Don't like businesses that don't tell you that their engine doesn't include everything they say it does, and don't stand up for what they sell. I bought what I thought was a brand new engine. When I had it installed the push rod was bent and wouldn't work. I called and complained and was told if you put gas and oil in it the warranty is void. How are you supposed to know if it runs if you can't start it. I then call Briggs and Stratton ,they said to take it to an authorized dealer for which I did. After calling five of their dealers who didn't even want to look at it. One of the dealers said he didn't want to work on it because of past dealings with Briggs and Stratton not wanting to pay the their cost. So a year and a half later and I still can't cut a blade of grass with my zero turn. What a piece of junk!!! The last Briggs and Stratton dealer said he thought the engine was bought previously and residual oil was left in it and the engine was put back on the shelf causing the problems. So I'm out $869.00. Nothing but the opposite the regulator on my original engine had 5 prongs this one they sent only had 3 after comes to find out the new engine can't charge the battery system so the battery will never charge during operation, 5 phone calls and emails later they said let's open a claim!!!! Be careful!! Sales is great but in my very first interaction with support I was treated very poorly. Our motor was received with very minor damage (dented air cleaner lid) that was not immediately evident when the package was inspected. Mark Winningham the Technical Support Manager admonished me for missing the damage and refused to replace the air cleaner lid on the freshly opened motor. I'm pretty shocked at the aggressiveness of his response to a customer and refusal to rectify the issue, especially over a part that's only a couple dollars on a motor that cost 1300 dollars! I'm super disappointed over the treatment and plan to file a grievance. I don't expect a resolution so my only course as a customer is to pass on my poor experience to others and never ever do business here again. I ordered a choke cable for my side by side. When it arrived it was clearly a used part. The nut was rusted, paint peeled off the knob and the housing that held the cable was busted. When I tried it to see if it worked... you guessed it FROZE UP. This should never happen, it was clear looking at the part it was used. Horrible, and they still have not contacted me back. Bought a small Briggs engine from this place. I filled it with the recommended gas and oil to the specified level. It started on the second pull.... and immediately started blowing out white smoke... more and more so I turned it off. I waited a few minutes, started on the first pull... and the white smoke again started immediately. Well... that OK... no company mass produces equipment with zero defects... I was just unlucky. I called Small Engine Warehouse to return it for a new one... and I was told that THEY DO NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS... I needed to deal with a local service center to see if it would be repaired under warranty. I called our local Briggs service dealer... and given the season.. they are running 5 to 6 weeks on service. He also told me that it isn't uncommon for low-cost engines sold online to have some form of problem. The main point is that I will never deal with Small Engine Warehouse again. Bought the Generac motor to replace my Kawasaki FE290D out of my Gator. This motor is awful. It vibrates so bad that the bolts come loose on the motor and components daily. We spend the mornings wrenching on the motor and its loose by the end of the day. Been through two starters in less than 10 hrs. of run time. Its not a direct drop in either. Buyer beware. I purchased a reengine kit for a Gehl 2500 (which was a rebadged Hydro-Mac 8A). This kit used a Honda engine. I've had this now for over 3 years. The manual they sent with the engine, is for a vertical not horizontal shaft Honda product. Which uses 2x the oil (very frustrating at 2am to find the dipstick indicating overfilled oil sump). There are many packaging problems. The adapter that bolts to the Honda, which then the auxiliary hydraulic pump stand attaches, was drilled with an offset error of .1 inch (in one direction). As the engine shaft to this pump uses a jaw coupling, this offset would eat the rubber spider within a half hour of running. This took me a bit to figure out as an issue, and I purchase the hard plastic versions until I could find time to fix. I remade this adapter part on my vertical milling machine as jaw couplers can not have more then .005" of shaft mis-alignment. The Honda engine shaft diameter is 1.0" (with 1/4" keyway), but the old Onan being replaced used a 1-7/16 shaft (with 3/8" keyway). The kit had a "T" shaped square keyway to convert the Honda key size to the larger Onan key. Also included was a sleeve that had the larger keyway machined, that slid over the 1" Honda shaft, resulting in the 1-7/16" shaft. Then the original 3-vbelt pulley is slid onto this. However the jaw coupling for the pump, caused this cantilevered keyway section to rotate and damage this "T" shaped keyway They should have provided a new Vbelt pulley for the Honda shaft, and a mating jaw coupling as well for a 1" shaft. This gets rid of all this clap trap attempt accommodate the old shaft diameter, and reusing what are replaceable parts. The base plate that modifies the Honda mount to the Onan, put this shaft at the correct height for the skid steer. Only issue was the drilled hole size of 3/8" with paint was too tight, and I had to run a 13/64" drill to give some clearance. My current issue is they added an oil drain which has and extension tube with drain valve (so you don't have oil running down the side of the engine base), which has leaked from day one, I thought I tightened it enough to stop this, but after this summer, the oil sump is empty, and the oil-dry is soaked. So before I use this for snow removal, I have to figure out why this is leaking. I'm guessing it's missing a copper washer or equivalent gasket (see below as to actual problem found). I do like having an engine that STARTS. As the onan was very warn out. The major issues with this is the low tech packaging they used. They did have some machine shop produce the PTO adapter plate and engine mount plate, but they should have charged a bit more for a new Vbelt pulley and jaw coupler to not make what I know will be a problem down the road, and I bet the Honda shaft will be compromised by the twisting torque issue of the jaw coupler. So with the issues I've had, I give it a 3. For those that don't have a fully equipt machine shop, you can hope that your skid steer and kit are simpler to accommodate. Follow up 11-27-2015. Oil leak problem was traced to an engine accessory. This appears to be a Honda engine option of a drain valve with a hose barb connection. It is in my engineering observation a design error by Honda. They used a rubber O-ring as a gasket. This was squooshed out between the engine oil sump, and a washer on this drain valve add on. Using O-rings, requires there to be a groove machined into one of the mating surfaces to limit how much compression the O-ring is subjected too. In this case one side of it squirted out and allowed oil to leak past the M14x1.5 threads of this drain valve slowly. But over the summer, it emptied the oil sump. Even if the groove was machined, there still is a clearance around the washer and tube of this drain valve, that would have leaked oil. My solution was to procure and automotive drain plug. Yes now when I change oil, it will flow down over the engine mount bracket and skid steer frame. I did run into another packaging issue with this drain valve, the engine mount bracket provided by small engine warehouse had interference with the removal of this drain valve. But there was just enough compliance in the barb hose to get it past this engine frame but with lots of force. If a flat washer type gasket was used this would limit the problem some. But it needs to seal the pipe neck of the barb hose fitting if all oil leaking is to be stopped from the engine crankcase. read more

I went to their website and they charge $3.99 shipping. Small Engine Warehouse told me they would not adjust their bill. I called again and was put on hold for over 10 min. I decided to call back an hour later and was on hold again for another 10 min with no answer. I called right back to talk to a parts manager or parts lead to get this part ordered. I left a voicemail for him to give me a call back. I never got a call back. This is my first Yelp review. I was so unimpressed with these guys, I will NEVER give them my business. If they can't manage to pick up a phone, how are they going to get an order right? I would suggest trying German Bliss. I need a short block for a kroler engine. I got one from Small Engine Warehouse. First thing happen was a spring broke in the engine. Next the head of the valve broke off. I then ordered a Brigs to replace the Kroler. I put in my lawn mower and drove it about 400 feet and the rod broke(it is an engine with a oil sensing switch, that won't start without oil). Small Engine Warehouse or Brigs wouldn't stand behind it. I bought it as new and found out it was a ten year old engine. Also I found out that the block was broken and something like JB weld was put over the hole. Also the vale guide was broke. Now I know why they wouldn't stand behind it. read more

Bought a Honda GX35 for my bike as it was advertised for bike motors, expected great things but it died in under a year, Spoke with the sales rep. Dylan Markum who suggested either return the motor or take it to a local dealer for warranty work. local seem the best option because I could avoid shipping costs. Honda declined the warranty because it was "not used for its intended use" once they saw it on the bike. I have requested how to return it to SEW but have not return received any return communication since I told them what Honda stated. Honda is trying to avoid liability of the motor on the road and SEW is not backing up their advertisement of a bike engine. I just want a replacement engine so I can get back on the road. How could any one blame a 35cc engine for injuries or death, unless it blew up and burned me to death but that would be more likely to happen holding it next to my body using it to trim my lawn. read more

NONE OF IT FIT!!!! When I spoke to the Salesman when purchasing (Stuart Phillips) he assured me this was a 'bolt and go' engine. He said it was specifically engineered for the Grasshopper 1822 I was needing it for. He told me that if we had any problems we could call and get help. Long story short he will not answer his phone now or call me back. As soon as I mentioned that nothing was like he said he would no longer speak to me. DISAPPOINTED beyond belief with this company. You would think when paying $1459.99 for an engine they would at least respond right? Nope!
