The hotel I stayed at had an inoperable gym due to construction, so I got day passes to this place during my stay. I don't really have any complaints. The layout of the gym was interesting, but it's New York, so maybe this is how gyms are out here. I had no problem finding working treadmills, and I appreciate that they were facing the windows to keep me stimulated during mundane treadmill runs. The workers were kind. No complaints there. I will say I absolutely hated the bathroom. Outside of that, it did what it needed to do.

Admittedly I only go there when I'm in town from time to time, and only use it for working out using weights, so I have no experience with classes or trainers. Given the relatively small space, I feel the variety of equipments suits my needs very well, and they are by and large in good working order. Sometimes I had to wait a bit for my turn to use an equipment, but usually it's not a problem. The place is clean enough, and people tend to be there for workout not socializing. Certain areas are roped off unless you speak to a trainer/staff so that's probably what put some people off, although gyms in the suburbs often have large classrooms locked except for specific classes, so it's not unusual practice. Location is convenient for me. Hours could be more flexible but I am OK with it.

Out of the 4 NYSC locals I hop from on the UWS and UES, this gym is hands down last in class. I'd…read moreadvise any friend to not sign up, or drop out, if this is their only location to use. I go only when I am so short on time that I am forced to go close to my place. Issues? Management is powerless to change a thing, and corporate ignores all Communication. This gym was wonderful (with one exception) before renovation; then they ruined it. In a location that used to, and should, have thrice as many, 73d shockingly installed FIVE--total FIVE--ellipticals, and even fewer stair mills. No variety in cardio: use treadmill instead of Central Park (boring), ride a bike (only THREE), climb stairs (almost always taken), or fight to get one of the four functioning ellipticals that are, by the way, all the same variety. To all those considering this gym, I say Buyer Beware!

I scanned in using my phone, grabbed a towel,…read moreand began walking around the gym to familiarize myself with the equipment before heading to the locker room. While doing so, another member approached me and made inappropriate comments, saying, "I won't tell if you won't tell." she repeated this a few time She went on to imply that people often walk in and take items without permission and suggested I should go to a gym closer to my home. I explained that I live in Brooklyn and do not have a gym in my area. She then insisted on walking me to the locker room. A few minutes later, this same member entered the locker room and questioned whether I intended to work out there. This interaction left me feeling uncomfortable, judged, and unwelcome. Shortly after, a male employee approached me regarding a complaint about people "laughing and screaming." I wasn't aware that speaking or expressing joy at the gym was against the rules, and I strongly suspect the complaint was made by the same member who confronted me earlier. This entire experience has left me feeling unfairly targeted and profiled. As someone who chose NYC Sports Club for its reputation and accessibility, this incident was both disheartening and unacceptable. Everyone deserves to feel welcome and respected in a gym environment, and my experience today fell far short of those expectations.

I'm in my mid-sixties, and for most of my life, my body was just a means to transport my head. But…read morewhen overall wear-and-tear began to creep in, I decided to join this neighborhood gym to delay the ravages of time. Since the last time I did weight machines was in the Jack LaLanne/ Bally Total Fitness era, I decided to hire a trainer to give me a kind of orientation and help me launch a fitness routine. Liam came highly recommended. He customizes our sessions to reach my goals, and modifies them as my goals change. Liam knows my medical conditions, which he works with, and weak areas, which he helps me to strengthen. He suggests exercises I feel comfortable doing on my own in the gym, or at home. Liam can point out details of how a position or motion should feel, so I know when I'm doing it correctly. I have the attention span of a flea, yet he designs routines that are challenging and entertaining. He checks in often during a session, yet he can somehow inspire one or two more reps out of me than I believe possible. Befitnyc has a variety of classes which I've just begun to check out, from barre-pilates and tai chi to cross- and interval-training to zumba, all included in the very reasonable cost of membership. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and the facilities are clean and well designed for a relatively small space. Best of all, the laid-back, diverse clientele makes me feel like I belong.
