This is a coffee roaster, not a coffee shop, though they have samples out of some of their roasts. It's an industrial building with a lobby that is the coffee 'store'. We stopped in to find some interesting coffee beans, and we received very personalized service. We picked up a bag of decaf (which is getting harder to find in whole bean), and a bag of regular. There is a huge variety of beans to choose from and of course, they know their stuff! They provide coffee to many restaurants in the area and have a big operation. We will definitely be checking out more varieties, we tasted the ones we bought in comparison with a bunch of other roasters on the Central Coast and they are the winner for variety as well as quality. Instead of willy nilly picking up a bag of beans from the grocery, come directly to this family-owned roastery and you will have the opportunity to gaze inside at the roastery and warehouse. The highlight of our visit was having a chat with the owner. There is a small shop in the front to buy your beans, ground or whole. The nice thing is, instead of buying the 12 oz size bags they distribute to their local vendors, they can make you a bigger, 16 oz bag of freshly roasted beans of your choice. You can also try a couple samples of the Coffee of the Day while schmoozing. My personal choice was the Morning Fog Lifter that we had this morning over at Celias Garden Cafe in Los Osos. This roast is smooth, dark, and very special. It makes drinking my coffee black completely delightful without feeling any need to add anything. They are down the street from each other. How convenient, how fortuitous! Worthy of a big bear hug for finding both! We met with Chris, part owner along with his sister, a very friendly and knowledgeable coffee bean pusher, full of valuable tips and information. Their father was the original owner of the business. Keep him talking and you will leave a better person, not to mention a well caffinated, happy coffeeholic. While they do not have an auto ship, Coffee Club membership, as of yet, there are plans in the works. Meanwhile, you can still make an account and order online. I love this coffee. Years ago when I was in San Luis Obispo county I saw boxes of Keurig K-cups from this roaster and got a few boxes. I was hooked and now I'll frequently mail order their products just so I can pretend I'm on vacation and I sip the coffee. They have three varieties of K-cups. Morning Fog Lifter which is a full bodied medium roast (also has decaff version), Darn Good Coffee which is a blend of light roasted beans, and Pirate's Grogg which has a buttery, rum, spicy, vanilla flavor. I'm not usually into flavored coffees but Pirate's Grogg is fantastic and that's with me drinking it black. Other offerings are coffee in premeasured filter pouches for drip coffee, and a large variety of beans to grind yourself. Besides coffee they've got a variety of gifts, food items, coffee making products, etc. They usually have good sales and have free shipping if you spend enough. I had a tiny issue with the order I received yesterday and they were so friendly on the phone and quick to resolve the issue. But the predominant style here is medium roast, while I prefer dark roast -- but not so much a French roast which is often bitter due to the acid content. SLO Roasted aka Central Coast Coffee to the rescue! They have a broad variety of blends from light to dark, as well as various flavored blends. Their blends include two non-acidic dark roasts: Stormin' Norman and, my favorite, Col. Austin. But if you want those, or most other of their specialty blends, you have to go to the roastery in Los Osos. There, you can buy any blend you want and have it ground as you want. The little lobby has two kinds of coffees brewed you can try while you wait for the roastery staff to get and grind your coffee. (This is NOT a café.) The employees are always nice, and because they actually make their blends themselves know all about them. I frequent SLO roasted to go and buy a bag or two, but this last weekend was the first I'd attended an open house. Adam, the roaster is a really great guy and gave a detailed demonstration of how they roast the Columbia Supremo. The coffee here is always good and being able to actually see how they roast it was a treat. It was surprising to see how small the batches are that they produce considering that they deliver coffee to just about every market in SLO county. At any given time they have numerous single-origin coffees from all over the globe which each have distinctive flavor and profile characteristics. They're really good on full-bodied dark European roasts though, and you have to try their Vienna dark roast - our standard morning brew. read more

I'm a bit picky about my coffee. While most people like their coffee burned beyond recognition, I like a nice medium roast so that you can taste the complexity and nutty notes of the brew.. SLO Roasted has a lot of options and does a great job of creating coffee that tastes like coffee instead of ash. I can't speak to their darker roasts, so if you like your coffee with flavor (a medium roast) I can say that I've tried a lot of medium roasts and theirs are awesome. I make my own half-decaf blend of Central Coast regular and Colombian medium roast decaf. Their service is awesome (I pick it up at the store) and they know me by name now. I also prefer to buy local, so this is a great option. It's great to have such a high quality establishment in our little neck of the woods. read more

I've been drinking SLO coffee since visiting friends 15 years ago who live in Los Osos, just up the road from San Luis Obispo (SLO). I still remember my first-ever cup of Morning Fog as one unbelievably great cup of java. I was hooked on it and have been ordering fresh-roasted coffee from these guys ever since. ( It was definitely a plus that I happened to be looking at the Morro Bay rock out a kitchen window with my first sips of SLO coffee...) Some of the best coffee on the planet made by an indie operation, with relatively small-batch roasting; dozens of quite tasty coffees, both flavors and unflavored (whole beans or grind); easy online or phone-in ordering & shipping; and important to me, very nice people to deal with. Morning Fog is the starting point for many in the SLO area where it's sold locally, but numerous flavors can be found on local store shelves as well. I only wish they would find a way to fill k-cups, but I decided to turn over a new leaf and revisit my epicurean coffee past: I ordered a few pounds for family and friends and myself tonight. In about 3-4 days when it shows up on my porch I'll crank up our other coffeemaker downstairs. Yessiree, I'm going the full pot route in the KitchenAid drip machine for the first time in a couple years and looking forward to that moment. Out with the uber-convenient Keurig k-cup contraption for the Holidays (at the minimum, I swear it) and in with the slow comfort of drip grind coffee. They make the entire LOVR area smell wonderful when they fire up the roasters, so ***** stars even though their coffee is generally lighter than my preference. But, you can't go far wrong with beans that are literally fresh from the roaster. This coffee is fantastic. We have family and friends out of town that are addicted to SLO Roasted Coffee so a pound or two as a gift is always welcome to take along on visits. I am super sensitive to caffeine so I almost always buy their decaf. Some flavors of decaf they don't keep in stock but if you call 24 hours ahead they will make any flavor for you. I love keeping their Chocolate Raspberry decaf or their Sugar Cookie decaf around to go with late night dessert. If you visit the warehouse you can purchase directly from them; I've almost always seen Julie who is a kind and friendly person, always a pleasure to see. When business people put their heart, soul and passion into a business it is translucent and the business thrives. The employees are proud because they have a job that is something they can brag about and flourish. I experienced such a business, called SLO Roasted Coffee first by a cup of coffee freshly made in a French press and then at the annual open house. I received an invitation from Julie Galloway to attend this innovative experience that included a coffee and pastry pairing, a tour of their facilities, a live roasting demonstration and finally a "cupping" tasting of the coffee. She promised that this event would increase my coffee IQ and she was right. I was thrilled and had no problem recruiting Mr. Bayus to accompany me. SLO Roasted Coffee is lodged in a warehouse in Los Osos, with a retail showing of their coffees, coffee infused edibles and other items made with a coffee base including lotions, soaps and shampoos. I grabbed a large glass mug and quarried into the pairings. SLO Roasted Coffee picked four categories to showcase their brews with awe-inspiring pastries from the Apple Farm Restaurant. Executive Pastry Chef Willette "Willie" Vey produced a spread of tasty treats that complemented the coffees impeccably. I started with the North American pairing with a Mexican Fino Coffee paired with a Dulce De Leche cupcake that led you to believe you were siting on a café in Cabo San Lucas. The cupcake had a crunchy top, caramel swirl through out and abulieta chocolate harmonizing perfectly with the mellow brew. The Mexican Fino was a surprise with mocha hints and nutty traces. They also had a white chocolate dipped almond biscotti (this was my favorite pastry). It was soft with a touch of almond paste, drizzled chocolate and sliced almonds, a taste that was simply delicious. Next was the African Coffee Pairing with Kenya AA bean. This coffee had a light body and a silky texture. Its earthy implications and hints of spice and fruit worked well with the Pumpkin Spice Cheesecake. The cheesecake had a muffin bottom, with a mildly spiced real pumpkin filling and a dollop of whip cream. This coffee was bold and strong and I took some home for my Sunday breakfast. It was also paired with aptly named Lemon lust Bars, a tart lemon tart that surprised delighted all who tried it with the coffee. The Central American pairing featured Costa Rican beans. This coffee was mild, but bold with a hint of floral undertones. It was like swimming in a Cenote of flavor. The pastry was a vanilla cheesecake with tangy cherries drizzled on top. Gary really liked this combination. I preferred the chocolate truffle cheesecake with three layers of different chocolate throughout with white chocolate curls placed on top. The last was a Dark Roasted pairing. The star of this liquid test was a Vienna Dark Roast and it was perfection. Rich texture with light acidity and full bodied chocolate undercurrents made me happily reach for the creamer. The Apple Cardamom Pecan Cake with salted caramel was a winter delight.
