Absolutely love this place for the owner, then the food! Back in the late 90's and early 2000, I had a boat docked near Pedro. I've always passed this place, wish I'd gone in earlier! As soon as I entered, I looked a bit confused and the owner immediately gave me a sample of their potato and chicken nugget. I was already hooked, not by the food, but by this sweet older gentleman. I had already glanced at the menu on Yelp and knew I wanted the gizzards and liver. Since he had already given me the famous potato and chicken nuggets, I asked what else he had. He offered the cevapcici and explained that it was a sausage with ground beef, lamb and other meats, which I didn't catch. I was already going to order this because it had lamb. He also said I can get 1/2 n 1/2 of the order of gizzard and liver if I did the pint size. When I got my food, he said if I liked the cevapcici, then come back for the Croatian plate. I took my food to the nearby beach and tasted the food! So much sausage and potatoes! The ayver sauce is like a red bell pepper base. The onions on the sausage were sweet. Yum! Eat the liver and gizzards hot! I added a honey mustard sauce for 35 cents more. But I did take the leftovers home and bake it in the toaster oven. The inside is minimal. Brian was fantastic. He is all about his brand and getting the word out about their delightful food. He let me try samples of a few things while I was making my choice which I didn't ask for. It was extremely nice he did that. I ended up getting the pulled pork sandwich. It was delicious. The sandwich with a side of potatoes for $11 was massive. I got two meals out of it. The ambiance is super cool. You can tell the place has a been a local neighborhood spot for years. And it's very clean despite being around for decades. You can tell they keep up on the cleaning. The Croatian Plate, for less than 17,99$ had my name written on it. Mostaccioli red pasta with meaty sauce, cevapi which is usually ground beef ground veal ground lamb ground mutton that instead of meatball round are skinless sausages shaped like thick two inch length cylinders with seared caramelized onions, sauerkraut with onions chopped ribs and something like Polish kielbasa skin on chopped sausages but Croatian instead, plus four thick slices of white fresh bread. (Freshly baked Croatian baguette?) With two containers of special thick red condiment Croat sauce, made with special vegetables? I learned this dip called ajvar is made of roasted vegetables and is called pepper caviar. Such large portions! Yaaay. A wait of more than ten minutes, less than fifteen. So. Worth. It. Previously all I knew of the culture was the singer Lorde. Who is also New Zealander for Croatian. I am sure you are familiar with the expression- do not judge a book by its cover. Meaning that you should not assume value by the exterior of a person or, in this case, an establishment. I think this place is not more frequented by customers because it gives tattered and forgotten vibes. But this place is a treasure-- so hopefully this review lets others know that this place can be the valuable Pokemon card that you can find at the neighborhood flea market. I say this because the food is fried goodness at a reasonable rate. This is a breadth of fresh air in an atmosphere that is thick with high inflation-rates stench. When you enter prepare to be underwhelm by the decorations. The place is certainly not chic. The knick knacks that are around the restaurant are mostly for amusement, they do not speak elegance or create an atmosphere of elevated sophistication. But they are fun to see. For example, there is a sign where a tomcat says "hi bate" to a female cat. The female cat says "do not hi babe me, you told me that we were just wrestling." The tomcat sits four-legged with a smug and accomplished smile. The female cat has a fancy bow around her neck--- she belongs to society. The tomcat made her belong to the alleys for a night. A story is told by this portrait that is funny, superficially. But if you look at it through the eyes that one should have after the me too movement the sign is offensive. But this place has the sign so I encourage you to go with the eyes that spot humor at face value. Do not over analyze or you will be offended. I went there and I dropped a nearly empty cup of ice coffee. I felt bad. They had to clean up my mess. But they did not make me feel bad about it. In that respect this place is a classy joint. When I go- the move is the chicken nugget plate. It comes with plumb chicken nuggets and potato nuggets. They are not exactly crispy. But you can take them and make them as crispy as you want. I also get 5 corn on the cob. They warm them up, put some melted butter on top, and they are good! I eat them till every corn niblet is gone--- like I was a cartoon character and I used a type-writer method to identify and enjoy every niblet. I also got two corn muffins. They warm those up too. They give you choice of sauces. I go and get the honey mustard dressing. It is all decent. It is not a bite from heaven but it fixes hunger good and proper and all for under 16 dollars. And I think all I ordered can feed two people. This place is worth a visit. If you are not fussy, and can handle simple food that is done good enough then you must go here. Your tummy will be satisfied and your wallet wont' weep. But remember do not assume that this place is fancy. It is down-to-earth and sweet. There are a few places that serve this Eastern European sausage and I was so happy to see that this is an option on the menu. You can also try their mustacholli (pasta) as a side. Croatian food is difficult to find so maybe order the Croatian plate to get a sampler or order a la carte as a special request. Definitely try the Croatian items on the menu. The service is friendly and very patient in answering my questions about what to order. The owner is happy to please his customers. I would definitely add an order their potato nuggets since that is their specialty and their most popular item. I would skip the chicken nuggets as I found it to be tough, dry and overcooked. We'd walk up to the store, buy a "quarter's" worth of potato nuggets, (they would come in a small, white, cardboard container), and scarf that shit down!!! The potato's here are the FUC'n bomb!!! We order them a lot of the time for parties and family togethers. The fried chicken is out of this world too!!! It is slow cooked in a pressure cooker so when it's done, it's pure, unadulterated, fall off the bone, chicken fried deliciousness!!! (BTW... The chicken nuggets are pretty effin' good too. The best you'll ever have)!!! As for the potato nuggets, just be careful on the amount you order because they'll show you a tray and / or carry out container, give you a price, then proceed to fill that bad boy so high you could pole vault over it. All I'm saying is that you'll most likely get way, WAY more than you expected with your order, so don't be afraid to go smaller... The gentleman over the phone was really nice and even said if I was going to be late to call and let him know so he can wait for me. I got there before closing time and placed my order.
