Unfortunately I had to cut my time with Slater short due to a job relocation, but they always made sure to respond quickly and professionally to any inquiries or needs I had. Everyone at their office was kind whenever I went in and even loved my dog. I even locked myself out late on a Saturday evening and Pablo himself was there within an hour with new keys to let me in. I had apartments close to the office so there was never too much time in between seeing someone from the office, which made it easy to relay information about the apartment. I've lived in two different apartments at the 4756 N Maplewood building and have dealt with problems at both. Both apartments had heating problems and the one bedroom had improperly sealed windows and a roach infestation that lasted 9 months. The reason I'm giving them more than one star, however, is because they were kind enough to let me break my lease without a financial penalty because of the roaches. I wish the problem had​ been resolved sooner but I can honestly say they showed effort to exterminate. Their apartments have a fair amount of problems but they appear to be reasonable people. read more

I was looking forward to moving in this place I got approved and was about to sign my lease and the company told me I couldn't move in due to the fact something happened to the apartment no warning no heads up nothing the only way I found out was when I reached out to them I paid for movers and everything and was looking to pick up my keys they wasn't sympathetic at all and didn't have a solution for me to stay somewhere just told me we would send you your money back they day I was supposed to move messed my entire plans and I lost lots of money because of this and I still haven't received my money from them definitely don't recommend read more

These people are shady scam artists. About a year after moving out, my roommate and I got a call from a debt collector saying we owed Slater $150 for oven cleaning charges. So, despite having our contact info, Slater did not reach out to us with this claim. Instead, a YEAR after leaving they have a debt collector in Texas call us. Well after we would have proof of cleaning and be able to reasonably fight the claim. We're young people with decent jobs, but we can't afford to challenge this in court -- especially so long after the case. And we can't afford hits to our credit score. And I am sure Slater knows this. So they hit us with a $150 charge to milk us for some more dollars knowing it was too small for us to try to spend likely more than that to fight it in court. So, if they're going to mess with us so long after the fact, I will post my thoughts on this management company. Thoughts I had hesitated to post a year ago because I didn't see the point in being negative. Pablo and Co will pretend you're buddies and that you're friends when you sign on, but then they will be incommunicative and unhelpful down the road. It took my roommate and I a year to get the correct laundry keys from them even though our apartment was literally around the corner from the office. The front door wouldn't close during winter, and a scammer came in asking for our electric bill. We told him to get lost, obviously. When I spoke to Pablo and Co about it, they just said, 'Oh, call the police.' They did not listen to me saying I did not even want to be in a situation where I would have yo call the police. I wanted the door to close, dammit. They didn't care. They didn't help. I am sure that door still doesn't close in winter. We are lucky nothing worse happened. When summer hit and we needed AC, plugging in the AC unit caused the old ass fuse in the apartment to blow out. When I called Slater for help, as now we were both hot as hell and in the dark, the first thing they said was, 'Well how much you got plugged in?' As if it was our fault they don't maintain the building. I had to call again with stern threats to get them to fix it. These people do not care. They do not want to help you -- even when they mess up. They just want your money, and they will bully you up to a YEAR afterwards to squeeze more out of you. Do not rent from them. read more

I lived in one of the studio units in 4031 N kenmore and couldn't have possibly loved it more. Everyone you see or meet in the building is extremely nice and very helpful. The maintenance and slater realty team are also super easy to contact and help you out as soon as they can. Which is more often than not very quickly! On top of all that the apartments are very well maintained and directly next to the Sheridan red line which make transportation to anywhere in the city quick and easy. Overall great experience living here and would recommend any slater property to all. read more

If you don't have any changes in your life, you might be ok but forget about your security deposit. My story is similar to the rest that gave negative feedback. We rented from Slater for 3 years, always paid our rent on time and left the place in better condition than it was when we moved in. We had to relocate during the 3rd year of our lease for work related reasons so I called Pablo at Slater to request we be let out of our lease 2 months early. He couldn't have been less understanding about our situation and kept repeating that "unfortunately"--he uses this word in almost every sentence and you will hear it if you ever meet him--"we are a business and in it to make money." We tried to make this move as convenient as possible for Slater under our financial situation at the time but Slater refused to negotiate and demanded that the lease be paid off entirely or they would sue us. Paying rent at two apartments was tuff, so we made it only two-months and then explained to Slater--with 30 days left to fill the apartment from the last rent check we sent--that we needed to be let out of the lease one month early because we could not afford two apartments at the same time any longer. Again, they refused to negotiate and demanded payment or they would take legal action against us. Again i wrote a letter and explained that we had been worry free tenants for almost 3 years, needed them to understand our situation and start looking for another tenant while there was time to fill the gap. We received another letter stating they were taking legal action and they did as well keep the security deposit. Remember, this company does not care at all about their tenants, no matter how long they stay, no matter if they pay rent on time, no mater how easy they are to business with. If you want to be treated well as a good customer should, stay away from these guys. read more

What can I say.. where to start. When I first signed up for the apartment I was a bit nervous because the unit I applied for was occupied by a dirty guy but the leasing company that took me to see the apartment ensured me that they have placed several of their clients in Slater buildings and the feed back has been positive. So I took a chance. I started out with a small studio and I began to outgrow the space so I upgraded to a one bedroom apartment, they made my transition very easy. I could not believe how response the company and staff are: 1. Onsite manager - Responds quick and even holds on to packages left in the lobby. 2. Addresses to any maintenance request that I have promptly and if the maintenance was over their head they informed the management office and they were all over it. 3. Heat to the building - amazing 4. Neighbors - Loved my neighbors 5. The maintenance staff, building managers and office staff were always friendly (however once when i was in the office i did overhear a stern conversation that they were having with from what i assume was a tenant but I guess business is business). However due to job relocation I needed to move out from the apartment while I was under a lease. The office staff was very helpful and informative with my options and provided me with some suggestions as to how I could release my apartment. Once again the transition was flawless, even though it did take a few applicants before one was accepted (their screening process is a bit hard). I recently signed a lease with Slater Realty and have been very happy with their level of customer service and professionalism. Now, I will say that I'm coming straight out of the most disfunctional leassor/leassee relationship that I've ever experienced ( their Yelp review is pending on receipt of my security deposit!) so I may be biased when I find genuine humanity behind a rental company! Slater Realty was recommended to me by some friends who were previous tenants and so far the recommendation has really worked out! The apartment was very clean when I arrived on move-in day with new blinds, new ceiling fans, and a fresh coat of paint. I would not be surprised if Slater Realty is involved in a class action lawsuit in the near future. These folks are petty scam artists. I had the same experience as several other 1 star reviewers--they charged my roommate and I for 'damages' but neglected to send us the bill. They had our emails and phone numbers and could have easily contacted us about the charge. Almost a year after we move out we get a call from a debt collector. At that point we could not contest the charge without messing with our credit (the charges were crap, $150 to clean a stove?) This is a pattern. I've been renting from Slater Reality for five years and have generally been very happy with them. There have been various things over the years that needed fixing, and when it involves the building managers, it gets done almost immediately. If I have to wait for someone from the Slater office, it takes a bit longer, but still gets done in a reasonable amount of time. I was told that they no longer allow dogs in their buildings because the son took over the business and decided it was better to only allow cats. It is because of this that I will not be resigning my lease, which is a shame because I would have stayed on otherwise. Slater Reality: You've got a great thing going, and judging by your yelp reviews, most of your tenants agree. But allow dogs or you will lose more renters! read more

These people are absolutely horrible landlords. It's next to impossible to get in touch with them, and when you do they are really sketchy. For example, once when trying to drop off rent, they lied about being in their office at a certain time and said that rent was late even though there was no one there to receive it. They will take any bit of money they can squeeze out of you, even going as low as sending debt collectors for cleaning fees even though there was absolutely mention of cleaning fees earlier. They take advantage of their tenants. Their Hazel building is not well kept. The front door to the building only closes half the time, and often strangers would get into the building and packages would get stolen. The buzzer doesn't work in the winter. The electricity would go out and the landlords wouldn't help with it. These people are scam artists who have poorly maintained properties. Do not rent from them. read more

We had to move to a bigger place, but were very sad to leave our apartment and the management company. They were very respectful of our time-- never any pop-in visits or surprise prospective renters. They told us at least a day in advance and would even call to let us know if the prospective renters cancelled. I have to say, you are always afraid you won't receive your entire deposit (or even your deposit back) after moving apartments. Not only did we receive our ENTIRE deposit back in 30 days-- we even received the interest on it. Considering we lived there for 7 years-- that is pretty terrific. Thank you Slater! read more

These guys are really nice and have always been really great about getting things fixed for me almost immediately after asking. The office is right below my building so it's really easy to pay rent, and they have been really cool from the start. I had moved in halfway through a lease and they allow us to sign a brand new lease without having the pay the move in fee. They certainly could have charged it but they were decent about not charging again for a fee the others who were living here already paid. The place I live in is very nice and definitely affordable. I'm about to resign for another year a expect the same solid living situation. read more

Building manager Gloria was always available, friendly, and helpful - she even helped me move my heavy luggage up to my apartment at 2 am on move-in day! Pablo in the leasing office was an angel. DO NOT USE SLATER REALTY. They are completely unreasonable. Here is my story. I moved into a one bedroom with my boyfriend and about 3 month in I we broke up and since neither of us could afford the place by ourselves we decided to do the only responsible thing and try to find a sub-letter for our place. We did all the leg work. We put of up a craigslist ad and set up showings and had many interested parties. However, the timing was terrible, my landlord there had major surgery and was pretty much out of commission for months. Her daughter started handling everything but she had just had a baby and was very busy with the new born. I have excellent credit, a great full time job and I am a very responsible person. I have never had a bad relationship with a landlord. When I applied for an apartment with them they insisted that I have a sub-letter already signed to our lease before granting me the apartment. They had absolutely no right to demand that since honestly it was non of their business. If I signed a lease with them I was still morally and legally responsible for that apartment. They gave me a day and a half to get a sub-letter and since that is impossible, they rejected me. To be honest after reading some of these other horrible reviews maybe I'm lucky they rejected me. read more

Slater is fine. The people who are giving them 5 stars must not expect much from their landlords. While Slater has been friendly, they certainly aren't stellar in terms of fixing things or taking care of their units. It is usually days before they shovel the back walkway, which we need to use t take out garbage, for example. There is a list of minor repairs that has not been addressed for months (such as missing domes on light fixtures and a buzzer that doesn't work). Granted these are not deal breakers, but I feel like that is the difference between 3 and 5 stars. If you are okay with a standard Chicago Slum-lord light, this is a fine company to be with. But they are still a big company managing properties for money on a contract basis. You will not get a really genuine relationship with them, and you will not get great, timely service. You'll get good enough service, if you bug them a little. read more

My boyfriend and I lived in a Slater Realty building in Buena Park for two years and didn't have any issues until several months after we moved out. We were under the impression that the non-refundable $250 move-in fee would cover normal wear and tear of the unit since there wasn't a security deposit. But five months after we moved out, we received a notice from a debt collector that was trying to collect a $250 debt on behalf of Slater Realty for alleged damages that we caused to the unit. Some of the charges were related to cleaning and we owned up to those, but more than half of the charges stemmed from painting on the walls of the living room, which we thought was a normal procedure that a management company would undertake to prepare the unit for a new tenant. Slater Realty claimed that we left black marks on the wall that required the whole room to be painted. When we asked to see proof of the "damage," the debt collector emailed us grainy black and white photos that were inconclusive. The company claimed that it wasn't trying to "nickle and dime us," but it's clear that's not the case. I ultimately was able to get the charges reduced to $200 after arguing that we didn't damage the toilet paper roll holder and was forced to pay it off so my credit score wasn't affected. We definitely learned a lesson and will be more careful when renting an apartment in the future. read more

I've lived at 4241 N. Kenmore Avenue for about a year. I was excited at first about this apartment but that excitement quickly faded. The number of issues I've had living at this building and dealing with the management is absurd. Between having to call over five times in a four month span to report my fridge not working to coming home and finding my closet organizer and all my clothes on the floor, the headaches of living in this place is not worth the payoff of living in Buena Park. I actually think the area is the only redeeming quality of this apartment building. 1. The website states the studios are 375 square feet. That is a lie. I measured my apartment several times. The entire studio is 11'4" x 19'4". That's about 210 square feet. I do not know what math this company used to calculate the square footage to come up with 375 square feet. There's a reason why the floor plan for the studio doesn't have the actual dimensions of the apartment. 2. The washers and dryers in the building are breaking constantly. The best part is that there are no signs when the washers and dryers are not working. I found out the hard way and I did not get my money back. 3. When maintenance cones, hide your toilet paper, Kleenex, and paper towels. They will use these items while they are working on your apartment and then leave them on your gas burning stove for you to clean up. 4. Another complaint about the maintenance. If something is wrong with your fridge, such as it stops keeping things cold or it starts to leak, and maintenance comes to fix it, make sure you haven't gone grocery shopping the day before because they will leave your food out on the counter and you will need to go buy new food to eat. Did the leasing office offer to repay me for the money I lost at their expense? No. 5. The front and back doors are incredibly hard to open. I've almost snapped my key trying to turn the locks just to get into the building. 6. You will hear EVERYTHING from your upstairs neighbors. Every footstep they take, every conversation they have, every dish they wash, every time they have sex, etc. It is an old building so it's to be expected. Maybe when a tenant moves out, the management company should look into making some improvements with the creaky and old floors. 7. Washing your dishes will be a hassle. I can barely fit a glass under the faucet because the sink is so shallow and the faucet is so short. read more

COCKROACHES!!!! COCKROACHES!!! COCKROACHES!!!! Slater realty and investments is the worst management company I have ever dealt with. Not only are they rude, but they do not take care of any problems you tell them about. I had seen two cockroaches in my apartment about three weeks ago and they said they'd spray and take care of the problem. Here I am again, with more cockroaches in my apartment. They are now telling me that I never reported cockroaches and that they will now follow protocol to exterminate them. I was absolutely told a few weeks ago that the problem was already taken care of! I asked to break out of my lease ONE MONTH early and they refused. The property manager, PABLO, insulted me and told me I was doing this because it's "convenient" for me. How is me having to move out of my home because of cockroaches convenient for me? He said it's a process that takes a while and still expects me to live there during that process. NEVER rent with this company. They are cruel and soulless and don't care even a little bit that their building has cockroaches in it. I tried to explain to him that if there is even one cockroach, then the whole building has cockroaches. He said that's my opinion. No. That is a fact. And they didn't come from my apartment because it is spotlessly clean. Again, DO NOT rent through slater realty and investment unless you want to live with cockroaches! read more

I don't understand how they have 4 stars. They're probably the worst management out there and I've lived all over the country. First off, the manager will tell you one thing but do another - quite frequently. I had an agreement with him regarding the last months rent and he agreed that it was my roommates responsibly to pay her share (although it doesn't work that way he'd mentioned and I understood the rules) Therefor, I wrote him a letter and asked if I could pay half of the amount and he said that's fine. I even called him after I had moved to LA and he reassured me that I didn't have to worry about it - that they would contact the roommate instead. I wanted to make sure everything was ok so that nothing outstanding was to show on my credit. Well, fast forward 3 years and I'm on the phone with a debt collection agency saying I'm 2000 dollars in debt! Because of a measly 400 dollars my damn roommate never even paid them! Had he told me that I was ,in fact, responsible for it, I would have paid it because I didn't want potential future apartment managements seeing this on my credit. On top of that, they never fixed anything. Kitchen floor was dirty and stained, took them a year to exchange the old stove that had a hole in it on the top right, the screen doors never worked and worst of all is that they only had 1 washing machine for the whole unit. I've lived in crappier places with managers who were more on top of everything and didn't lie about situations to avoid them. I highly recommend you don't live here. read more

DO NOT RENT FROM SLATER REALTY! I moved in after the first 2 weeks my refrigerator stopped working. THEN apparently the building that I moved into was not wired enough for CABLE so that took about 4 weeks to hook up! AFTER THAT my toilet broke and my PILOT LIGHT WENT OUT ON MY STOVE AND IT TOOK THREE CALLS TO the Slater Realty main office to FINALLY get someone over here to fix it even though my place smelled like GAS! Not to mention they had to come when I was at work and some of my things were obviously gone through when I was away! FINALLY TO TIP THINGS OFF I just got a letter saying that I did not pay my first months RENT of $700 when I handed a money order TO MY LAND LADY PERSONALLY 5 days before the beginning of the next month! DO NOT RENT FROM SLATER FIND SOMEONE ELSE IT IS HORRIBLE! read more

They were incredibly prompt with maintenance issues (once I called in the middle of the night expecting to leave a message, but instead talked to someone and had a maintenance man at my door to fix the issue before I went to work the next morning!) Where to start. Let's first talk about the realty group. They were ok in the beginning wasn't to sure about them to be honest. Read a bunch of mixed reviews but after seeing the unit figured can't beat the price well I was completely wrong!!! Now let's talk about the unit. If they try to tell you the windows are new, lie there old and hardly work. Water leaks out the bottoms and you don't even need to open your windows to get a nice breeze in the summer time. In the winter it's a different story. I had to stuff paper towels in the cracks then use removable caulk just to slow down the wind that was rushing through. Here's a real life example of how bad the windows are. I had plastic over the windows to cut down on the draft. On a really windy day the air was rushing trough so bad that it blew the shrink plastic off the window. Speaking of air in the winter time the furness will run continuously. The windows in my unit were that bad. Moving on to the bathroom. The bathroom looked great on move in day but it was a wolf in sheets clothing!!!The bathroom was so gross. There was black mold growing all over the walls above the tub and not to mention on the grout When told about the problem slater realty sent someone there the next day. There fix was to paint over the mold that was on the walls and caulk over the grout. This happened every time I complained about the mold problem. That I stopped complaining and figured that I'd just clean the walls with bleach and deal with it. Next monster of a kitchen gross gross gross....... When you here others says cockroaches that is so true. There will be this little guy that will show up at your door and spray for them in the warmer months. Which does not work. The worst part is he has keys to your apartment and will let himself in to spray without you being there. Which is a complete violation of laws. They have to give each tenant a 48 hour notice of when they need to enter your apartment. Unless for emergency purposes. The cabinets are old and hardly working. The floor looks like they got a discount on black and white tiles. The back door and window again leaks when you get a heavy rain. This brownish water will start to run down the door and window. Then there's the parking!!! Do not park your cars close the the building!!! I repeat do not park your cars close to the building!!!! Chunks of brick and mortar have fallen on my vehicle and caused damage. In the winter time there is no snow removal. You have to clean the center portion of the parking lot as a collective team with the other tenants. Also the back stairs use with caution in the winter months. They use this synthetic salt which makes the stairs slippery if not being careful. They are remodeling the apartments as tenants move out but I've talked to a number of them and there not happy with the work. Things aren't working as intended or break all together. If you see and add on any renters sight that states slater realty look the other way. There's better places for cheaper and better landlords. read more
