I've driven past Slap Fish on my trips to HHI for the past decade--was never sure if it was "fast food" or beach seafood shack or what...and while locals either love or hate the place, I was encouraged to give it a chance and it would surprise me. I visited during the last week of February, so definitely "pre-season" and there was no wait (or many patrons) at 6:00 pm. I must confess that I am a New Englander, so we take our seafood pretty seriously; I'm not daft enough to order lobster in SC, when it should be coming from Maine, so I passed over those options, but I was curious to try the "New England Clam Chowder". We also ordered the fried pickles w/ Jersey sauce, an order of the special Jax shrimp (akin to bang bang shrimp), 2 fish sandwiches, a shrimp burrito, and I had an ultimate taco. You order at the counter, grab your utensils and condiments off to the side, along with fountain drinks & iced tea. They sell draft beer, a limited variety of bottled beer, some Truly-type seltzer cans, but I had to have a Mexican Coke, even though it set me back $4.50. Sit in the dining area and the food is delivered to your table. First off: the NE clam chowder was hot and filling, but it was more like a loaded baked potato soup--too viscous (not dairy based), some clam flavor, but too much bacon. I spied some clams, and there was a spicy finish; truthfully, I could not finish it but folks unaware of how it should be wouldn't bat an eye. The fried pickles were large spears in a light, tempura-like batter; the group agreed we'd have liked them cut into smaller bites to make them easier to manage. But tasty. The fish sandwiches were piled high with fresh cod filets, lightly breaded and sitting atop a brioche bun piled with lettuce & tomato, served with seasoned fries (paprika-forward). We got a side of the homemade coleslaw, and everyone agreed it was fresh and delicious. The shrimp burrito took a bit of time to come out after all the other dishes, but it was large and half was taken home to finish later. My ultimate taco was fabulous! It arrived garnished like some sort of fancy-pants entree at a high-end restaurant--a huge surprise and very filling. It lived up to its description requiring two hands to hold it. My favorite of the night was actually the special Jax shrimp, which we added on a whim--shrimp was perfectly breaded & fried, all very plump & juicy. I'd have eaten another order of them if I'd had the room. I believe Slap Fish is worth a visit--perhaps several visits. If you discount the New England clam chowder (get a native in the back to show the cook how to make it!), every piece of fish was fresh and delicious. Again, I'm not sure how Slap Fish measures up in the height of the summer season, but I was pleasantly enlightened on my first visit. read more

My wife and I took an extremely short trip to the Savannah/Hilton Head Island area last week to check it out and got super hungry while doing it. We were driving down what I think was the main road through the island when we drive by Slapfish, liked the logo, and decided to come stuff our faces. This place looks like a fast food style restaurant for seafood and I had no issue with that (I did google it and find out both Utah and California also have locations so I probably wouldn't of come here if I knew it was a chain, but it was still good so oh well). The menu has fish n' chips, tacos, burritos, and a bunch of other seafood options to cure any hunger. For me? Well, I saw the giant shrimp burrito when I walked in and knew it was my destiny to inhale that bad boy like a whale eating crustaceans. My eyes definitely underestimated the size of the big shrimp burrito as it was absolutely massive, almost two burritos pretending to be one. It was packed with rice, huge pieces of shrimp, and some sauce that tasted phenomenal. I managed to eat the whole dang burrito (and get a nice slapfish sticker for doing it) and left being as full as I could possibly be. The burrito itself was absolutely delicious and probably one of if not the best shrimp burrito I've ever had. The burrito was also served with some seasoned tortilla chips on the side that I tried a few of and they were really good as well. Overall, Slapfish was an unexpected home run and a place I will absolutely be back to in the future. The food was absolutely delicious while the staff were extremely friendly. The restaurant itself was well decorated for the style it was and I have pretty much no complaints. Five stars for this massive shrimp burrito! read more

They recommended 2, but J was only able to finish one. The cole slaw was simple, but paired with tarter sauce. The in house tarter sauce was flavorful, with a hint of dill. There are multiple sauces. Fish and chip were "delicious " and "highly recommended." They use soda water instead of beer, creating a light and fluffy coating. Definitely a good place to come for quick and fresh food. Everything on the menu sounded fabulous. Locals picking up orders they called in recommended the lobster roll and lobster taquitos. However, if you are limiting your carbs, head for the salad. This was a great mix of shedded cabbage with a few carrots on primarily a bed of spinach. The shrimp were very good with a citrus sauce. The sauce from the shrimp helped to flavor the salad, so I barely used the dressing (which also had a great flavor). I would definitely return. read more

This is one of the rare occasions that a restaurant that looks like a chain but isn't a chain is actually damned delicious. Luckily, it was the first place I ate on HHI, so I knew where to go for the good stuff. I ate the gambit from the fish and chips, the salads, the tacos, and all the sides. Absolutely delicious! Visited for the weekend, we had always wanted to try authentic southern seafood and this is the place to visit. The service was prompt we didn't have to wait more than 30 min for our food. The food was very flavorful and fulfilling the portion sizes were very generous. I ordered the Surf N Turf Burger and kids grill cheese. Of course the marketing for this place was on point. I couldn't drive by a restaurant with the name "Slapfish" and a giant hand/fish calling out and not give it a try. And oh am I glad I did. After walking in and reading the menu I wondered if the name should have been "slap your momma" (that means something is really good in the South). But probably too many words for a sign. The fish taco and shrimp burrito caught my eye (pun intended), but then I discovered the lobster section. Lobster roll, grilled cheese, and a burger! But wait, there's housemade pickles (grilled or fried)?! I began to worry my entire time in HH would be spent here, sampling the entire menu. But alias, I had to make a decision. I couldn't say no to a lobster roll and the fried pickles were a must as well. I ordered the clobster grilled cheese (includes a creamy herb sauce) just in case I did not pass this way again. The question of quantity was quickly answered. I would not be leaving here hungry. But what about the flavor? And texture, you have to be gentle with lobster. As I rotated the three items (that's how I always eat) I knew the team that night had brought their A game. That thick, Texas toast bread for the lobster roll had the crunch and firmness I had experienced in the Chesapeake Bay. The fried pickles had the right amount of bite and snap, with a breading I won't soon forget. And that grilled cheese? It's like running into a childhood friend after three decades; you don't realize how much you miss them until they're right in front of you. Or in this case, on your plate. But you get the point. Be sure to sit outside if you can. The traffic is usually busy (it is HH after all), but the occasional whiff of ocean air will compliment your order perfectly. You can thank me later. read more

Some Covid protocols where in place with social distancing signs. They have all the indoor space open to the outside for fresh air. This is a come as you are place, very casual. Some menu items stood out more than others. The Bowls seem to be a whole different business than the Fried Fish. You can find much better Fried Fish at places like the Sea Shack and Steamers. I would steer away from items with Fried Fish as part of the dish. The bowls are a newer concept for Hilton Head. I hope they expand that area as it is fresh and healthy. Daily specials are written on roll of brown butcher paper to the right of the cash register. Constancy seems to be an issue with people ordering the same dish and it looking very, very different. Really solid food in a fun fast-casual atmosphere. This place is very eye-catching in a high-traffic location. I finally got around to trying and I'm so glad I did! I went in for lunch and I got the lobster grilled cheese and key lime pie. The grilled cheese is deliciously luxurious with the lobster addition and the awesome sauce it came with paired really nicely with it. This is my second time to slap fish and unfortunately today is because it was not quite good as the first. The tuna in the Poké bowl did not taste fresh and had an unfortunate fishy taste. I am appalled that David L would hire someone like Peter. I ordered the Epic Shrimp Burrito and was surprisingly disappointed that it was full of rice and very little shrimp. After having eaten half of the burrito, I had only consumed two shrimp. Peter was the person with whom I spoke to to express my dissatisfaction. His tone was rude, he was unapologetic, and he was unwilling to resolve the issue. Peter's exact words were "I don't see where there is a concern! We put the same amount of shrimp in each batch!" As a consumer, I would have appreciated an offer to remake my order and to add extra shrimp or another means of compensation for the dissatisfaction. Instead, he gave me attitude.
