Dixie Chili beats Skyline Chili…read more There! I said it! Yeah, so it's true. Since the untimely demise of the classic "Covington Chili" parlor about 6 or 8 years ago, Dixie is tops in my book. Don't get me wrong, however. Skyline (or Gold Star, or Blue Ash, etc) is great. Both recipes are excellent, but Dixie's taste is a little bolder. And, when comparing macros to macros, Dixie stacks up better (more protein, less fat). BOLD FLAVORS: Note that one option for the Dixie's chili mac is the famous "6 way." A 6-way, is the standard Cinci/Greek "5-way," (Spaghetti, chili, beans, onions, cheese) with the addition of chopped garlic! Be careful with the 6 way...it doesn't take much garlic to overpower the other flavors. Atmosphere: Classic retro diner-ish vibes. The service was excellent also. Want the best chili is the area? Cross the river and eat here. 5 stars!

Cheese Coneys- These were smaller hot dogs stuffed inside a fresh, hot, steamed bun, then topped with chili and a mound of shredded cheddar. Super messy to eat. Taste was alright. The chili itself was not spicy, but had a lot of spices/flavoring in it. I could definitely taste a little sweetness (cinnamon?). Cheese Curds- These came out piping hot. I got my dogs first, then they brought these out to my table. These were freshly fried, great cheese pull...solid order of cheese curds. Service was straight to the point. Not a lot of smiling going on, but whatever, people are here to eat and get out of here. They serve everything pretty fast and efficient. Would I come back? Eh, maybe. I'd never crave these things, but if I were back in the Cincinnati area, and it was late at night, this would fit the bill. Would probably try the spaghetti next time with like a 3 way.

Our sandwiches were good, but that may be because we were ravenous when they finally showed up! My impression is that Family's Main St Restaurant is primarily a hangout for locals to catch up with one another while waiting for breakfast or lunch. While there's a place for restaurants like this, I do not recommend it to travelers who want to eat in a reasonable amount of time and go on their way.

He got a kick out of being able to read his name multiple times around the restaurant and was happy with his eggs and toast which is all you can hope for with a six year old, am I right? I got the pulled pork omelette and it was amazing. I'm not a huge cheese and egg fan so the omelette was just pork and egg, so next time we stop by I might add a veggie or something for a little texture change, but the flavor was great! They don't turn on their ice cream machines till 11 so we didn't get to sample the dairy goods, but I'm sure they will be worth a second trip. We loaded up on merch to wear back in our neck of the woods and chatted with some of the workers on break who got a kick out of the story behind my Kelly's name and shared the OG Kelly's name origin as well. We had known the place existed because we had friends who played volleyball there (they have a sand volleyball court next to the restaurant), but had never had the occasion to stop by. This place does not pretend to be anything else besides what it is - an unpretentious, locally-owned/locally-serving bar/restaurant where you know exactly what you'll get. I loved the old signage on the walls and the overall vibe. It's just a straight-up local comfort joint. Food was not anything to write home about but it also was exactly what I was looking for, if that makes sense; filling, short-order breakfast fare. I'm not coming to a place like Peewee's looking for bold gastronomic experiences - I want strong coffee and fatty breakfast food. Apparently Peewee actually came out from the kitchen as well and was greeting and joking with some of the regulars - super cool to see. I also like that they offer vegan chicken, which is a nice option for those looking for an alternative. Definitely worth giving it a try if you are in the mood for some hot chicken.
