This story is better told timeline style: We start off with 5 stars: Liz seemed really nice in her emails and her portfolio on line was close to what I was looking for. I decided to hire her to do a dramatic look for my engagement before having my wedding trial done. The day of my shoot, we dropped to 1 star. How? Liz's way of creating conversation started off as uncomfortable and crossed over to unprofessional. For the uncomfortable part, it started with some preachy things about beauty products. That's ok--I can take a little of that since I could take better care of my skin, use more sunscreen, etc. I just don't believe in a complicated daily regiment for the sake of using products--we can agree to disagree on that. Moving on, it got a little testy when she told me threading is unsanitary and that it was a practice that originated in Japan--I'm pretty sure South Asia is nowhere near Japan. Sure it's popular now, so it's common in my many countries--but there is a reason why most South Asian salons offer this service, but few East Asian ones do. Before, after, in between, we played a 3-hour game of 21 gazillion questions, which increasingly got more personal. The "what do you like about your fiance" was weird, but then she asked me how much my photographer cost. No. That's where I draw the line--so I stopped and said I was not comfortable disclosing that information. Thankfully that was close to the end of our session, but I was shocked. I didn't realize how angry I was until I started telling my fiance what happened. We didn't have too much time to discuss it because we had to rush to our shoot. When I got home, I found an email from Liz apologizing for asking about the photographer's fee--I'll give back one star for that. Bottom line, for work alone, I'd give her a 3, but I've been told constantly that the most important thing during your wedding day is that you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible. I was referred to Liz by one of her colleagues who was going to be out of the country for the date that I had wanted to get my hair and makeup done. Liz and I emailed back and forth about what style of hair I was looking for, and also sent me a skin and hair questionnaire so she could prepare to get to know my skin and hair type, which I thought was fantastic. Her online portfolio was great so that was another plus, so I decided to book her for a wedding I was attending on February 16, 2013. Her home studio is easy to find and conveniently located close to my home, so that was another plus. She was professional yet personable and I could tell she knew what she was doing. I asked for a neutral yet sparkly shadow, and with fake individual lashes and cream black eyeliner, the end result was exactly what I had hoped for. Recently I just had a wedding and was privileged to have Liz and her team be in charge of my moms' as well as my hair and makeup. Liz did an AMAZING job. I contacted Liz fairly last-minute when we had a scheduling issue with our original stylist, and Liz was able to book us in with Tiffany and Caysi even with less than 2 months until our wedding date. Liz did a great job with both my hair and makeup for my city hall wedding. The whole experience was very easy and comfortable. It helps that she's very nice. On the service side, she was always ready on time, polite, and friendly, even after the job was complete. As for her technical skill, I typically don't wear a lot of makeup so I wouldn't be able to comment on technique, but I have a fairly critical eye and can be picky about how things look at the end. She did a great job! I took a self-portrait with my computer after the trial makeup session and sent it to friends. They oohed and ahhed and a couple of people were blown away. Liz did my makeup for our wedding and she made me look my best on our special day. The products that she used were ALL great quality and the makeup stayed on for more than 10 hours. I didn't even need to do a retouch! It probably would've stayed longer if I didn't decide to remove it before going to bed! I never got that "cake" look on my face. I loved what she did with my eyes... I wish I could have that stay on forever! Being Asian, it's hard to find somebody who knows how to work on Asian features.. Especially the eyes. When I saw Liz's website, I felt that she was the one... So I e-mailed her and asked if she could do a last minute trial makeup. The following day, I came to her place and it didn't take me long to feel comfortable with her. She's very friendly and easy-going. While we were finishing up and I was admiring what she did with my eyes, a crazy incident happened... The building right next to her apartment caught on fire and there was black smoke everywhere! We panicked but I realized one of us had to stay calm so I did. Plus, I had a pre-wedding photo shoot in about an hour and I didn't want to ruin my makeup! Hehe! We ran outside and stayed at the manager's unit, trying to calm each other down. The firefighters came and contained the fire. When it was safe to come down, she took me back to her place and did a retouch on me. Despite that very scary event, she managed to collect herself and finish off with a makeup that made me look like that incident didn't stress me out. She was very professional and she kept apologizing to me... I told her it was definitely not her fault and that she was doing a wonderful job... I remember telling her "Well, at least this is very memorable for both of us" and we just laughed it off. I felt bad leaving her right away but I had a photo shoot to catch. The pre-wedding pictures turned out really great, you couldn't tell that I was scared for my life few hours prior to the photo shoot! During the wedding day, I had a few minor problems that morning and was running late for my hair and makeup session. Liz was very nice and patient... She waited for me at the hotel and I felt so bad for making her wait. When we got to the hotel, she immediately went straight to doing her stuff and as expected, she did an amazing job on my makeup. She did my stepmom and my mother-in-law but because we were running late on schedule, they rushed her into getting the makeup done. I had to leave and I didn't know about this until my friends told me few days later. I felt so bad. They didn't really have to do that because I wasn't going to start with the wedding without the mothers. Anyway, she made the moms look young and pretty! I loved their makeup too, even though she had to do it in a rush. Sorry Liz. Overall, I would say she has all the great qualities to be a successful makeup artist. She deserves the 5.0 star rating that I gave her. Trust me. She does. I was so lucky that Liz fit me in last minute to do my makeup and hair for a party! Liz booked our appointment for two hours...which I thought would be way too much time...as I wanted a natural look. I found her to be a consummate professional, from the initial appointment setup to how she was careful to listen to my preferences, while still proferring guidance on what she thought would work best. She has a delightful personality that set me right at ease at her home studio (she also has a friendly cat!). She handled makeup, hair, and photography, which was wonderfully convenient for me. I went for a more natural look, and even so came out looking probably the best I've been. She also offers some light retouching, but frankly, if I hadn't managed to get lipstick on my teeth (I'm graceful like that), I don't think I would've needed any changes or enhancements at all because the shots came out great. I'm quite proud of the resulting photos and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Skyla Arts to anyone. I asked for a simple blowout for a wedding I was attending this weekend, but instead got hair that looked bad (too stick straight instead of creating volume, too much hairspray given that there was a lot of frizz even after the hairstyle was "done"...not at all wedding ready).
