They do not play enough Taylor Swift. The music acts are ok. Drinks are ok. It's almost always crowded. The local DJs are great. Probably don't get paid enough.

Now, I'm not from anywhere near the South, so I'm not sure if this is a "normal" bar.....we certainly don't have anything like this in the Bay Area, or in Haifa. First of all the place is HUGE. It's easily over 10,000 square feet, and they pack it. The $5.00 cover isn't really a deterrent, as people just keep flooding in as the night goes on. Drinks aren't too expensive, and there are plenty of bartenders. The front portion of this place was manned by a live country music band. They cover all the most popular country music songs, and the crowd really gets into it. I'm sure it's pretty played out around these parts, but we were pretty excited to hear a rendition of Sweet Home Alabama while actually in Alabama. We were wondering why people kept coming in and out of a door toward the far end of the bar. Was this the bathroom area? Nope. How about a massive dance floor with a full-on rap concert by a band that I swear could rival the black eyed peas. They went on for hours, and the place was going crazy. The energy level was probably elevated by the fact that Auburn had a home game the next day. Nonetheless, thanks for a great experience.

I was going to start this review by saying that nostalgia can't help everything when it comes to a…read moreplace from my past. I was originally going to say that nostalgia should take you back to your youth without having to deal with the youth that are now frequenting this college watering hole. But I decided when it comes to 17-16, I can't find anything else wrong with it besides having to deal with college students. But you know what, when you have a great "college bar", you really shouldn't expect anything different. Therefore I will let nostalgia from the bar I loved in college negate any of those negative thoughts. Although, I'm sure our group stuck out like the old alums that still hit the bars when they are in town. What makes this bar a great college bar? First of all, the bar runs on both sides and there are always plenty of bartenders. Making it very easy to get a drink. Not to mention college town prices are AMAZING. Also because of this wrap around bar concept, it keeps people flowing in a "lap walking" form. So even though it gets crowded, it doesn't feel that claustrophobic. There is also an outside area in the back. So if you want to get out of the crowded bar, this is usually pretty wide open. Would I frequent 17-16 if it were in my hometown? Probably not. But when I do my once in a blue moon visits and know what I'm getting in to, I can't think of another late night bar in the loveliest village on the plains.

I believe it effected some of the flavors of foods that were boiled in it, too. Gnocchi had some of the same off flavor. In addition, some of the flavors just feel way out of whack for totally unrelated reasons. Sauce that the duck came in was thin and overwhelmed by honey. The risotto it was served with seems like it should be rich and homey. But despite a crazy amount of added dairy still tasted thin and flat. Can't tell you why. Wonky seasoning? None of the dishes reflected any familiarity with acid to lighten or balance a dish. Fried green tomatoes were pretty mid despite a quality remoulade and a bunch of pimento cheese. Ingredients seem like they're decent quality. Desserts are legitimately top notch. Everyone recommends the peanut butter pie. And it is excellent, though pretty obviously not long out of the freezer. The affogato Is legitimately fantastic. And I'm not even talking about the pageantry of dumping the espresso on the salt ice cream. The combo is legitimately satisfying, like a well-rounded creamy candy. The plates are funky and cool and beautiful. The staff all seem like they're 19, attractive, and gregarious.

I started off with the Moon Over Madagascar, and let me tell you--if this drink had a fan club, I'd be president. The black tea and vanilla combo sounded like a weird dare at first, but it ended up being shockingly amazing. Whoever came up with that mix deserves a bonus and maybe a parade. Now, let's talk about the shrimp and grits, because these were not just "good." These were "call your mama and tell her you've tasted greatness" good. The chef is from South Carolina, and you can taste every bit of Lowcountry pride in that bowl. Perfectly cooked grits? Check. Pile of blackened shrimp? Double check. A sauce that made me rethink my entire life? Oh yeah. If they sold that sauce by the gallon, I'd be bankrupt but extremely happy. Erica, our waitress, was an absolute rockstar. Super helpful, incredibly informative, and somehow managed to keep the perfect balance of friendly and professional--even on the Sunday after the Iron Bowl, when half of Auburn is stress-eating. The place was spotless too, which is impressive considering the emotional damage that game causes every year. Bottom line: The Hound is a must-visit. Come hungry, order boldly, and thank me later.

The host who sat us was friendly enough. The restaurant is spacious with the expected Mexican decorations. Our table was not clean, and the host didn't notice. I asked the next person who came by to clean it, and she was happy to do it. It gave me hope that this was a minor issue, and we'd enjoy the rest. Unfortunately, it was the least of the issues. The server kept forgetting things we asked for and disappeared. We never got a refill on anything. He came back and apologized, but it seemed disingenuous. We were happy to leave, and unfortunately, we might not return - at least until we forget about this experience. Like: Quesadilla (flavorful steak, but one side did not have any on it); cheese dip (didn't get a refill on chips) Dislike: Hawaiian fajitas (great flavor; steak was tough with gristles); service (kept forgetting things, didn't refill anything, disappeared)
