Sky Camp site #6. Shady and private
    Michael D.

Sky Camp is one of the best hike-in campgrounds I've ever been to. I just got back yesterday. The sites are very spacious and private. The ground is a soft bed of redwood needles, and there were no mosquitos at all! I slept in a hammock without even using a net. Each site has a picnic table, grill, and bear box. There are two latrines and a spigot near the site entrance. There's even spots to hitch up and water horses, if you bring a furry, rideable friend. Despite the height we weren't able to find really spectacular views, just narrow glimpses of hills and sea in the distance. Maybe the large group site had a good view, but we didn't want to bother the group that was there. That was a little disappointing. It also got super foggy late at night, so everything got pretty wet between the moist air and the little drips from the trees. I'm posting two pictures of site #6, where we stayed. In one you can see my lantern hanging from a tree. I forgot all about it and it's still there! Enjoy if you find it, it's an awesome lamp.

From the Bear Valley Visitor Center, it is about a 6.5-7 mile hike, depending on which route you take. The Mt. Wittenberg trail is the steepest, and we went with the Bear Valley trail to the Meadow trail. From there you take the Sky Trail to the Woodward Valley trail, and then there is 0.9 miles on the Coast trail to the campground. In terms of surroundings, you go from meadow, to pine forest, to ridge line, down to the coast covered in chaparral. It's lovely. The campground is just 100 yards from the beach, but because of the large slope, you are protected from the heavy winds. That said, you still get a nice view of the water from sites 1-7. We stayed in site 2, which had everything we needed, including a bear box and picnic table. The larger campground has potable water, vault toilets, and trash bins. After we set up camp we went down to the beach, and walked a mile south to Sculptured Beach, which has lovely rock formations and tide pools. We saw anemones, urchins, and mussels.

I love music but it feels wrong to play music when you could enjoy the sweet music provided by mother nature! We stayed in the orchard hill loop, nice and quiet and further from the road. Creekside campsites look really nice but you are right next to the road and probably a lot more skeeters at night, also you don't get creek access. I would recommend campsites 48,49, 51, 52, 59 and all the lower 40's sites looked nice but the numbers i listed have long driveways that are perfect for sprinter van/RV or multiple vehicles. Definitely will be back. Cheers!

Staff was friendly with us and they even had a post office and little shop and laundromat. We didn't use any of these services as we were only staying the night. I do think it was nice they had it though. They also had a little horseshoes area, a small playground, and a couple poles you could sling a volleyball net up onto. They had a couple fixed bathrooms that were ok in terms of cleanliness. There were porta potties closer to our campsite though and the water was not pumping to those very easily. The actually sites themselves are super close to each other but come with a little fire pit and a picnic table. I had a great time being with my friends but overall the campgrounds themselves were ok. Nothing special, nothing really bad. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it or tell anyone to avoid it. He has a short braided thing of hair hanging off the back of his head, like he's a Padawan apprentice or something. "What, this?" he laughs. "Party in the back?" In a thicket by the creek, they sip coffee. Song of the thrush ascends. Seems to spiral to heaven upward like a shell. They gaze through a seven foot tall cow parsnip at the sky. The umbels are bobbing galaxies in a vast universe. Ever expanding. Wielding a magic wand, she identifies the plant: "Heracleum maximum!" It has gigantic leaves. Each one is connected to a thick, hollow, densely-haired stem. She steers the huge leaves on their thick stems in her slender arms. Swipes away the poison oak. "Found a path to the creek," she says cheerily. Clear water riffles and splits around a shoal. It's sandy with willows and cattails. There is a great blue heron in the reeds. The heron saunters forward deceptively, like a starlet at the Croisette, then recoils its long neck and strikes. "Bill stab!" he exclaims. He purses his mouth, throws his arm up and makes a fist. Taking a beat, she observes the scene, and says wryly "Sick, huge fan. What a bird." The impaled fish writhes on the heron's spear in the sun, scales glinting. It has met its immutable fate. The Owner, a person I would NEVER want to be be associated with. A real piece of work. Observed many times over the years shares entitled rude behavior with that of a tycoon. Two years ago, I'll never forget, this guy was complaining to ANY Customer who would listen about how he does so much to keep this place open and that people that complain about anything and everything are so ungrateful. It was really really colorful and downright disgusting. Excuse me? The people that PAY YOUR TAXES are ungrateful that you don't upgrade the sites they pay extreme amounts for? That you don't offer any amenities such as a shower or even that thing called...electricity? That you cater towards camping trailers with no water hookups? Mmmm, ok guy. Breathe. You do not provide toilets. Let alone ADA compliant areas for the toilets. You provide nasty ports potty that aren't even level on the ground. How is anyone supposed to wheelchair into the porta potty? They shake when you are in them. And they are disgusting. Your workers? blast them with a sudo washer and don't even take out the seat covers OR the toilet paper....and miss all the grossness. And then leave the residual water/product....that's just nasty. You blast gross stuff off the floor ONTO the toilet paper and seat covers because of laziness. I mean seriously....it's barely 50 outside and now I have to sit on a nasty went porta potty because your are too lazy to upgrade, let alone move paper until you are done? Penny pinch much? And what a concept of adding a smelly paper tree to remove some nasty stink. The photos are of the "handicap" porta potty. The others were gross, too. If not worse. These were after a "clean" too! You also do not provide electricity or anything that resembles comfort here. The grounds are totally unlevel on the camp sites. So, you won't be seeing many disabled folks here. OOOOO, all the dumpsters were FULL. Everywhere. It was a Wednesday. Majority of the camp sites are behind dunes. Unless you go to the seawall area, with no running water there either. Nothing to see but your neighbors getting drunk and dogs wandering everywhere. Fun. Never saw a "camp ranger" once. You have so many sites crammed next to one another so you can benefit off making money. 60$ for a pair of sweats? What? Like, woah guy. Ego much? Ohhhh, let's talk about the campers! Zero enforcement. Parking in other peoples spots and parking IN the roadways. Legit blocking people. And then have rude persons get defensive because they got asked politely to move their illegally parked vehicles from your purchased spot. So like, no, this place is not great. You get belligerent people and their visitors.....mmmmm, fun. This place is not worth it. Overcrowded, too. This isn'y Yosemite, and if it were, it would at least offer real amenities. This place does not.
