This place is the closest I've found to a Chicago style dog down here. I grew up in the Southwest suburbs of Chicago. A little place called "Joe's Hot Dogs" in Joliet run by an older man named Joe who always gave us (as kids) little Dixie Cups of milkshake after a long day of helping my dad clean up rental properties was my personal favorite. The fries there came in a paper bag and they were the skinny kind, piping hot and always greased up the brown bag a bit, but boy they were good. I should preface this review with the note that my dad allowed us maybe... seriously MAYBE going out to eat to 10 times in my childhood and it was places like Western Sizzlin and some place named Ali Baba's (where my brother and I also happened to throw up on each other after eating shrimp for the first time). Joe's was the exception, it was cheap and close to the rental property and I think my dad liked Old Man Joe, so we got to go there a little more often. Old Man Joe might have given us those Dixie Cup Milkshakes because my dad never let us get a pop (not when you had free water obviously lol). I don't know that anywhere can ever really live up to Joe's in my head, not Portillo's, not even Joe's that's now run by someone else. So when I say Skoogies is pretty good, well, that might be as good as anything will ever come to the simple childhood joy I got from Joe's Hot Dogs and fries. Skoogies has the option of cheese which isn't a norm on a Chicago style dog, but they have the poppyseed bun and sport peppers. I do remember Joe's being a little saltier and I like them that way. Maybe add a little more celery salt, a kind old man (the guy at Skoogies was super nice) and some nasally accents and you could find this place in Chicago. read more

Really, on the side of another building, behind Dunkin Donuts! Who would have thunk it. Small place, large counter, some tables in and outside. Just order and sit. But oh my, I had the pastrami on rye, the best, the best, the best. Lean and mean. Never had any as good, and I've been looking for a while. I saw this very hidden place while getting my coffee before work just minutes away. I finally stopped here around 12 for lunch and omg, I'm addicted! The menu has so many great options of warming foods for cold days. Even during the 2020/Early 21 pandemic, these guys are on point pumping out great food. I'm shocked they don't have a better location as the current building is shared by a chiropractor and Dunkin Donuts. I'd love to see a dedicated drive through location! Great Service, good food, big portions and low prices. Who could ask for more from a lunch spot?! It's a cute little nostalgic/ old fashioned place to congregate with your co-workers. A no frills type of place which I could easily frequent a few days a week. I had the Tuna Blt w/Seasoned Fries and a Lemonade. I will return to try out the hotdogs. My Tuna Blt was Better than most but nothing that floored me because I love fusion food!!! Maybe add avocado, some exotic spices even edible flowers. The tuna salad was nice! Moist and perfectly balanced with shredded lettuce,crunchy onions and celery, juicy beef steak tomatoes, salt and pepper on Rye Toast. The Seasoned fries were French fries with seasoned salt. Best Chicago dog outside of the Windy City. Fresh ingredients, snappy Vienna beef wiener, and a perfectly soft poppy seed bun that keeps all the toppings securely in place so each bite is a winner. Skinny fries in a paper bag brings back memories of the many lunches I had at Luke's in the burbs. I've been in South Carolina for about 2 years now but spent the first 38 years of my life in Chicagoland. I was very skeptical when I saw a sign for Chicago Dogs however I was pleasantly surprised. While they don't carry all the Chicago basics the Dog was great, a little taste of home. If they start carrying Pizza Puffs and gyros... I'll move across the street. I'll give their Italian Beef a try next time. If you're from Chicago you might be a little sticker shocked. A guy I was seeing had been raving about Skoogies for weeks so we finally went for lunch one day recently. It's a smaller place, totally authentic, with regulars ordering the same thing every time. I wanted to see the quality of the dog so I got the "boring" dog (according to him) with ketchup and mustard. I really enjoyed it and will be getting the full experience next time I visit. What's the saying..."Hard to find, tough to beat"? Describes Skoogies perfectly. These guys get it right. Quick service and a relaxed atmosphere. Known for their hot dogs, they offer quite the variety of toppings. My favorite is the chili "Home wrecker". It's the bigger version and is big on taste. They use only Vienna dogs like most hot dog stands in Chicago. In fact they tout themselves as the best deli south of Chicago. Not my idea of a deli as it's more of a sandwich shop. If you're dining in you definitely get the combo, dog fries and drink. I used to be able to finish the abundance of fries, but no longer. The menu offers other selections of sandwiches, but I can't pass on a hot dog. I took my mom here many times before she died. She loved it. She would always ask to go there when we were out running errands. Mainly it's a local stop but if you're anywhere near and want a good hot dog for lunch, head over. My daughter,who lives in a nursing home has been requesting a "hot dog" for some time now. I had previously tried other places in the area but found the lacking in taste or the buns were open on both sides wich allowed the contents to come through. Most authentic Chicago dogs in the area. Dogs, fries, Italian beef, and shakes are all great. The location is great for those traveling to and from Sullivan's Island. The space is not huge, but there is adequate seating with some picnic tables inside, bar seating, and a couple of outdoor tables. My only complaint is that they're only open until 4. Drove across town because we were told this place had a good "Chicago Dog". Meh. Not worth the trip. Only menu in the place was barely visible, taped to the counter and "Chicago Dog" isn't even an option. Instead, they push their "Skoogie Dog" "All the way" which includes things like sauerkraut and cheese which have no business on a Chicago Dog. Menu says "Poppyseed bun". Guess what? No poppy seeds. Tomato? One, pale, sad, half slice. At least the dog itself (Vienna) was quality. The fries were also good but credit for that goes to the fry cook rather than the basic Sysco crinkle fries. Great place to stop for lunch leaving Sullivan's Island Beach! We were greeted as soon as we walked in by each gentleman working there. They kindly answered all of our menu questions and after overhearing we were going to let our toddlers spilt a hot dog they came out to offer to cut it in half for our convenience! Came by several times asking if we needed anything else and thanking us for coming in. It was just a family-like, warm environment. ALSO, the food was FANTASTIC!! It's an institution on Coleman Boulevard and for a very good reason. It's the kind of place you would find in Chicago, a no frills, down to business kind of place, serving up damn good hot dog's and sandwiches. It's one of the few places in the tri-county area where you can get an authentic style Chicago Dog (or two). My standard order is usually a chili cheese dog with a side of fries. They carry an array of sandwiches but when I go to Skoogies I specifically want a hot dog so I have yet to try any of them. The place is seriously tiny with a bar running the length of the room and a couple of tables inside and out. It can get a bit busy during lunch, which is a testament to how yummy it is, and if there is no place to sit, it's totally the kind of place where you can just park and eat in your car or sitting on the curb. Why no green peppers, Skoogies? Being from Chicago, I find myself constantly craving the Italian beef sandwiches as synonymous with the town as the cold weather. Skoogies, thankfully, can handle that craving. The sandwiches at this little stand are quite good, though not quite perfect. They do have giardiniera and understand "dry," but there's no green peppers (a tragedy) and the bread isn't exact (but thats a tough one, I'll let them slide.) The fries are, however, a masterpiece of golden brown deliciousness. I can't express how much these need to be added to your life; they are perfectly fried and seasoned beautifully with just a little salt. What a great unexpected find. Definitely a no frills spot, but what a great hot dog. Being a Charlotte, NC native, few hot dogs compare to a hot dog from Wad's Soda Shop that closed in the mid 1990's. Skoogie's compares favorably and is one of the best hot dogs I've ever had.
