Sexist, dismissive staff + unfair charges I had a really disappointing experience with Ski Renter in Mammoth, and I would not recommend women rent from here. From the start, the attitude was off. When I tried to make casual conversation and asked if the mountain was busy on a Friday, the employee helping me responded with sarcasm, basically mocking me and saying it was like asking if Disney or the beach are busy. I politely explained that Fridays are often less crowded than weekends -- which is true -- but the tone stayed condescending. What stood out most was that the guys working there immediately treated me like I was a clueless beginner. I've skied Mammoth many times and ride blues and blacks, but they made assumptions instead of actually listening. The bigger issue happened when I stepped away from my skis near Main Lodge for about 10 minutes to use the restroom. When I came back, someone had taken one of my poles and left a different one behind. My skis were the only ones there, so clearly someone grabbed mine by mistake. When I went back to the shop to explain what happened, they didn't even consider that possibility. They immediately blamed me, saying I must have taken someone else's pole and that it "sucks for them because it's an expensive pole." They kept insisting the poles were different lengths and that "someone would have noticed" -- basically implying I was too dumb to know the difference. I had paid for insurance, yet they still charged me $20 for the pole. What's the point of insurance if you're still paying when something happens? So apparently I was wrong no matter what. To make it worse, they kept helping people in line behind me while I was standing there trying to resolve the issue. I was repeatedly ignored until the shop was empty. The whole experience felt dismissive, disrespectful, and honestly sexist. Instead of helping, they assumed I was incompetent and treated me like a problem, not a customer. There are plenty of rental shops in Mammoth. I'd suggest women -- and honestly anyone who expects basic respect -- go somewhere else. read more

When the lift & pass prices keeps going up and up, Ski Renter is the best shop to stay on budget. They were also able to offer an excellent deal on good demo skis that made it very worthwhile. As for the service, don't expect smiles out of a customer service stock photo; they're very chill and can just take a bit to warm up to you. read more

The ski rentals here are reasonably priced but the service was really bad. Honestly at times, the employees there felt outright mean. I am not a picky person but I felt very unwelcome there. The process to rent the skis was relatively simple and easy. They advertise 20% off on their website. You can also reserve them in advance on their website. Its a pretty good price for one day rental. I walked in to the left side benches and told them my shoe size, and was fitted with some snow shoes. Then I got my skis and poles. Worst experience here, the staff was very unhelpful and rude. When I came in with a few friends they didnt tend to us with a good attitude. Stating we don't have that size. Being very hostile, and when we asked if they had a different size, the worker turned around and complained about getting the other size stating "it's not the end of the f* world if we don't have a size". Parking: Located in a plaza with other shops, so there's a good amount available. Service: Everyone there is very friendly and helpful, but it's a fairly small shop, so it can get really busy and packed at times. We came both in the morning and in the evening, and they definitely had more time to help us out in the morning. I ordered my set online (20% discount), and they helped me select the appropriate sizes for the equipment. It was very packed at night. Thankfully, we were there to return equipment, so were able to quickly drop off, but I could tell it would've taken awhile to rent at that time. Might be more efficient if they could section off different times to pick up equipment so that they don't get rushed all at once. Overall, prices are some of the cheapest around the area and the staff were very helpful. If you're not in a rush and don't mind waiting a bit, highly recommend this spot! read more

We traveled to mammoth to teach my little sister how to snowboard, but the rates were so low that I ended up renting skis and a snowboard for her. She stayed on the board the entire time but I felt more comfortable having both in the car just incase she wanted to ski instead. To rent both was a luxury but the price made sense to me. While we were up there, I was also able to rent wrist guards for my sister and some overalls to protect her from getting snow up and down her back. I was going to ride my own board but after looking at their newer equipment I ended up demoing a new board, which I absolutely loved. The rental boots were older & worn in which felt great on my feet compared to the new boots I bought a few seasons ago. I decided I'll be reselling my equipment to get some newer stuff after playing around on a new Solomon board this past week. Overall, Christian and Rob were a ton of help getting us set up for the mountain. I can't wait to get back on the mountain and bring more friends to this old school ski shop- thanks guys! read more

Didn't feel like taking my stuff to Mammoth, so friends found this spot that had cheap rentals and near the lifts. We had a large group of about 10 or so people and had made appointments to get fitted and pick up equipment. When we got here it wasn't too busy and we got good service, but a few minutes later place got packed and service was sloppy and unprofessional. Staff needs to work on customer service skills Equipment was your typical worn down boards and boots, but pretty standard unless you get lucky with new products. Prices are some of the cheaper rentals out in Mammoth Parking is a good size lot so wasn't hard. At drop off they had so much stuff out, so we stacked our stuff in a pile, had it checked in and hit the road pretty quick. Overall if service was better at pick up I would of gave them a 5 star. read more

Rented for the first time last week with Ski Renter and had a great experience. First off did the reservation a day ahead of time on their website so saved a ton of time filling out paperwork. At the end of the online checkout experience just put in a note that will pick up the afternoon the day before our reservation started with no extra charge. It was busy when we showed up, but the process was quick and easy. Don was awesome got us set up with three complete sets of skis, boots and poles. We chose the base package as intermediate skiers and equipment was good. Saw some demo packages getting rented and they looked great! They told us we can return early and get credit back for unused days and if we needed to extend to just give them a call. Return process was super easy as well. Just brought equipment in and they gave my copy back of the contract. Note: They do not have much retail for sale here (small shop) it is almost all rentals. Right across the street is Footloose that has tons of clothing, boots, helmets, etc. Will definitely use them next time when back in Mammoth (especially since they are half the price!!!) read more

A blizzard hit while my friends and I were on our trip and they gave us vouchers to keep the gear extra days so we could hit the slopes after the storm blew over. The dudes working in here are fcking Radd and you can tell they are some powder hounds themselves which we love to see. Renting from the best at extremely reasonable prices. We rented from here twice while in Mammoth. They have 20% off flyers around town and on their website as well. I don't see any benefit to reserving ahead of time, because it seems more efficient to walk in. The first time we walked in, they were really busy. But after a short 10 minute wait we were taken care of and set up with snowboard and boot rentals. Yes, the gear was a bit worn, but if you're not an expert then it will be just fine. And if you're an expert you probably have your own gear anyway. They were helpful, and fixed the bindings on my own board that I had brought in. Be careful though, because he ended up charging me $5 for it. And double check to be sure they apply the 20% off if you bring in the coupon. The gear was perfect for our day on the mountain, and returning it was quick and easy. You can return it until 9am the next day at no extra cost. For $34/day boot and board rental (-20%), we were pleased and I think that may be the lowest price around. We came in the next day to rent showshoes. They quickly took care of us, and even recommended a great hike from Tamarack to Lake Mary to use them on. The vibe here is SUPER low key, so don't be taken aback. Also, better get your gear back right at 9 a.m., or the owner will charge you for a FULL day. We returned our kids gear at as soon as we checked out of the hotel at 10:30, and the owner wouldn't even prorate the second day. My wife and I rented cross country skis for two days this past week. The skis and boots were a perfect fit, excellent condition, and a great price. The shop was very busy and I felt the friendly, helpful staff did an excellent job of keeping customers safely spaced due to COVID. Everyone except us were renting snowboards and skis. I didn't see any issues with their rentals and the staff was equally friendly and helpful with them also. I will definitely rent my cross country skis here until I am ready to buy my own. Next time I will reserve in advance online, as it makes the return quicker. I tried to reserve on Wednesday for Thursday/Friday, but it appears you must make a reservation at least two days in advance. Not a big deal, I will know for next time. Best place to rent any snow equipment. Workers are great. They are really nice and willing to help with a smile. I came to this place to rent 3 board in March 2020 however the resort was close there next day and we weren't able to use the rental. Upon returning the board the staff knew we didn't use the board. He told me to keep the receipt and when I return next year or two they will honor the receipt. March 2022 I went back to the rental shop recently and show the receipt and they honor what they promise 2 years ago. What a blessing!! The staff was great! I wasn't sure about which length ski I wanted and they said to just drop them off and switch then out if I wanted plus I got flexibility on the number days. They also let my boyfriend use their tools to adjust his bindings and they gave us great advice. Such a great price too! It would have cost us about $90 a day to rent at the mountain and we got skis and poles plus insurance for $30 a day! Flexible, friendly customer service :) Will come here again. read more

We rent ski's here every year for our group. The staff is friendly and helpful. The store always has a hustle and bustle going in inside. Our large group takes about 45 minutes to set up. The guys know their job and set your stuff up while having conversations with the customers. It's about $30 a day here. The store is not flashy but they have what you need to hit the slopes. The boots we got this year had been new. A small section is available for shopping as well but they have limited items. The prices are great if they happen to have what you need. Located on the main road in town. We always pick up our ski's the day before our first runs. The prices here for rentals are great compared to other places. Open late during ski season to serve you. One year ago, a friend of mine came and asked for boots size 10.5 but the staff insist of giving size 9 instead and commented that this is normal to feel this right in the boots. Surely enough, after couple rides my friends's feet were sore as hell and ruined the whole day of riding. I'm not sure how the staff here can be so unprofessional. When he returned the tiny boots and the oversized board, the staff even made fun of him and making sarcastic rude jokes among each other... Worst experience ever. Went on a girls trip with my two friends and one of them needed to rent skis. We went through their website to place the reservation for the week but apparently they never got our reservation or payment. Yet checked my bank account and the money was taken out. Called ahead of time to confirm there wasn't going to be an issue, but when we got there of course there was! Three of the rudest workers I've dealt with, we named them Buck, Chuck and Fuckin Suck. There was so many issues with the way they were talking, very unprofessional and called my bank account a scam. When we asked for the Owners number to figure this out, they told us the owner never answers the phone, couldn't answer our calls or his workers calls. The skis weren't even good and had broken clasps, I would never go back there regardless of the cheaper pricing. It was actually a joke. Save your money and go across the street. read more

Why give money to a store that doesn't even want to help you. The gear is really used and it stinks. I had asked to switch my stance to regular instead of goofy, the guy looked at me and said, "don't you know how to do it?! You could do it yourself." Seriously, how can someone employ people this lazy? And the guy even had the audacity to say, "well this is how we do it in America" to some asian family in line. To top it off, the boots and skis that were rented for my friend kept on detaching, which made it difficult to ski. Seriously, don't waste your time.
