3/27/2026 -I am a wahine surfer from Hawai'i who had never skied before. In March my friends and I…read morecame up to Mammoth to ski. My first stop was The Ski Renter for equipment. After making my purchases I asked if they could recommend a good ski instructor. They were excited to ask "a friend" - Randall Ross if he'd be interested - then proceeded to give me his phone number. - A couple hours later, I was receiving texts from the phone number with offers for lessons. (shop staff must've passed along my phone number) Wrong already. -I made a reservation with Randall Ross for the next day. He offered me a free lesson via text , but once I called him, he said he charges $60/hr but we can see where it goes? Whatever the hell that means. Already I should have seen the red flags. Saturday 3/28 - I arrived at agreed upon location at 9:30 - Randall ended up being an hour late. When he showed up he took me to the bunny slopes. After a few minutes on the bunny slopes, he took me up the lift and I went down a small hill successfully. Everything was going well and he was commenting how easily I was picking up skiing. After about 2 hours he said you're catching on so fast, wanna go to a better slope? I agreed and he took me to a run was called Downhill, which I later found out was an intermediate run. When we got off the lift, ski patrol advised us that the right was treacherous, so Randall took me on the left. The left was still a very steep hill. I was headed at high speed to one side, and couldn't manage to turn in time and "pirouetted" to use Randall's term. I lost control, and was spinning, falling and the top of my right ski got caught and the boot didn't disengage. - My right knee totally hyperextended in mid air and I heard it snap! -I lay there in pain and Randall quickly came to help me. He helped me get up, my knee was super unstable. A few times he commented how I'm standing so it can't be that bad, and encouraged me to try going down again. I refused. Ski patrol rescued me, taking me down hill on a toboggon to Rapid Care. I had torn my ACL, which has since required surgery. I have been out of work for four months and am still on crutches. I have no idea if Randall Ross is a certified instructor, or just some bozo friend of one of the employees at The Ski Renter. I have reached out to the owner, (Rob Davis) of The Ski Renter. He has ignored my calls. I was born and raised in Hawai'i and have given surf lessons in Waikiki to Island Visitors many times. If I have a client who does well surfing Waikiki there is no way in hell I would suggest we go to a treacherous break like Pipeline or Waimea. That would be a stupid and foolish. Not only would I be risking the life of my client, but I would be setting myself up for a lawsuit. Let this be a warning to The Ski Renter's owner and employees who works there. What goes around comes around. And for any female who rents from The Ski Renter, ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TRUST THEM OR ANY OF THEIR STAFF. Learn from my mistake. Mahalo.
