Open afternoons and evenings, it's a great place to catch up with friends or go for a quick pint before a gig or movie. The front bar is tiny and usually populated by grey haired men nursing a never-ending pint. If you walk down the corridor however, you'll find a cluster of cosy rooms with old velvet seats, copper topped tables and a roaring log fire. There's also a small beer garden which gets rammed in the summer - despite having no views, flowers or atmosphere! Upstairs there's a cosy reception room which local promoters sometimes use for live gigs. I saw Badly Drawn Boy play his first gig here many moons ago and was quietly blown away. If you're coming to a show, get here early or you'll have to choose between queing for a drink or trying to find somewhere to stand. Speaking of liquor, stay clear of the wine - it tastes like battery acid - and stick to their great range of ales, beers, whisky and bourbon.

On first sight you'd think there was hardly anywhere to sit and enjoy your well-earned beer, as the bar stretches from wall to wall. Follow the corridor to the left of the bar and you'll see several off-shoot rooms to find a cushioned bench or bar stool. Given it's December we headed straight to the room with the roaring fire and got a great seat in front of the flames. I loved it here. My mate loved it here. And we would have stayed but the fact we wanted to sample more than one establishment that evening. Really enjoyed the beer here as well - the bar manager made a recommendation (alas I've forgotten its name, the beer, not the bar guy, but it was very good indeed). Tip: If you love your whiskies, you won't be disappointed here either, they have a sizeable selection.

Cooper Hall is a really cool bar! FULL STOP…read more It is fantastic for groups as it hosts long tables, and seating wrapping around the hall. I believe it has capacity for 300 people. Not to mention, the amazing selection of European beers, such as the Tank Pilsner Urquell, but I am prone to a German Weißbier, which they serve. Fantastic! Cooper Hall also stocks IPAs and seems to have a frequent 2-4-1 Happy Hour offer on cocktails. What's not to love?! The Hall is situated in one of the Grade II listed buildings just off Dale Street, and is in the basement of the old textile warehouse with the namesake, I.J & G. Cooper Ltd, built into the building itself. The beer hall is quite open and relaxed, adhering to the more and more popular dark wood decor, but mixed it with leather seats and bar stools. It pays a lot of respect to the heritage of the building. My visit was around 9pm or so on a Friday night, and it was busy, but not enough where it was difficult for a small group to find a place to sit, which presented a very pleasant evening with a few good pals, with a few really good beers. Cooper Hall also features live music, so even cooler! If you consider yourself a music lover, beer connoisseur, or lover of 2-4-1 cocktails, then this place is definitely worth a visit.

Prices are fairly high but no more than you'd pay in any other city for the same craft beer - it is though always worth checking the price (and strength) before you order a pint of that rare, one barrel produced collaboration between 2 of your favourite breweries - it could be time to get a new mortgage! There's a large lounge room upstairs and beer garden out the back with ample seating for around 40. I'm sure you know the places! A diverse clientele of patrons of all ages and a pretty relaxed and unthreatening place to hang out. I can't really give it more than 3 stars unfortunately as I though the beer on pump selection was a bit 'old mannish' with just general bitters and some Belgian beers/lagers on - there wasn't really much for an IPA head like myself. Overall a nice little pub to stop by for one, if I'm on Ancoats or heading to Band on the Wall again then I'll probably pop in but it's not up there in my top 5 of beery places to hang out in the city!
