If you bring your own skates, make sure they're not road-used; they're trying to protect their nice floor. Though I really love it here, be aware that they have heat but no A/C. Plan accordingly for the weather and dress lightly on warm days. Although I still miss the convenience of having a skating rink right there in Rockville on Gude Drive from years ago... Honestly, Starland is better in so many ways. Music is varied and they mix some classics in with newer, even on kids nights. The staff are always so nice and gave us great advice and service for my husband's skates, giving them their first ever wheel change in 25 years. (And believe me, he quad skates a lot!)

Friendly staff, plenty of parking, convenient location and an inexpensive night out. Get ready to do the limbo, and listen to some of your favorite tunes. Great for the whole family or for just the kids to have a fun place to spend their weekend nights. My parents met in a roller rink, I have roller skated my entire life and we are blessed to still have roller skating venues like this to carry on the tradition.

The place is pretty easy to find though it is unlikely you'd just happen to drive by it, as it is kind of not on the beaten path. You can purchase everything ahead of time in terms of skate rentals and entry. It's pretty reasonable for one session mid-afternoon until close in the evening, you just need one entrance ticket/fee paid. You get your money's worth for sure if you are there for hours! You can bring your own skates or rent skates here- they have regular roller skates and roller blades. Both of these are in whole sizes, no half sizes, and both of them would be best on your feet with high socks that go to your lower calves, at least. Tying them tightly gives you the best skating, but that also pinches into skin if you don't have the right socks. They have an area for parties that includes a few arcade games, but mostly, you're there to skate. There are people there who are serious skaters going wicked fast and throwing some cool tricks, but we never felt bad in any way for not being one of the super talented skaters. There's a snack bar, too, with your classic fare like burgers, hot dogs, nachos, fries and funnel cake fries. Yummy snack junk food that makes the experience all the more reminiscent of young carefree days! They have lockers for your stuff, some don't even lock, but no one seemed concerned. There are benches for sitting and changing out your shoes to skates and vice versa, and people tend to just stash their shoes under the benches rather than get a locker. A good time all around and pretty affordable if you're there for a while!

I had my daughter's party at from 10-12 am Saturday morning. The time worked well for me. I booked my party on the website about a month out. There is a 200 dollar deposit that is non refundable that you pay at the time of booking. They said you are able to use it as a credit for another date if something happens and you have to cancel. They have a menu online that you can purchase food for your party. They have pizza, fries, mozzarella sticks, and assorted sodas. If you choose to bring outside food there is an additional 225 fee they will add on (75 for food and 150 for cleanup) . They allow you to bring a outside cake at no additional charge. We ordered pizza and fries for the kids. They used a Spotify playlist for music. Had a great time with the kids for two hours. Staff was friendly and helpful. Had a issue with the cake we ordered for the part not being delivered. Staff was very helpful. Even though they don't have cake they did give us a discount on some ice cream for the kids. The provided candles as well. They definitely went above and beyond to make sure my daughter had a great birthday.

There were multiple groups of 5+ teens/tweens holding hands, blocking anyone from passing by them. Occasionally they would slingshot someone off of their chain of people into the rest of the ice skaters around them. There were also skaters passing by so quickly my hair was whipping in the wind as they flew by. I'm all for speed, but they kept coming so close to me I thought they were going to take me out. On top of that, there were multiple spills and children skating sideways. The workers looked like high schoolers and did not appear to be concerned by the number of people on the ice or the big groups of people linking hands. The skates were also lower quality, and they offered no half sizes. My advice is go at non-peak times and bring your own skates. If you check in on yelp when you arrive, there is a coupon for a hat or gloves.

So... 4.5-stars for the actual Rockville Ice Arena (RIA), but really the reason I feel compelled to…read morewrite a review is to warn figure skaters away from the East Coast Pro Shop inside the Arena, which deserves no stars. If you have figure skates, do NOT get your skates sharpened here, no matter how desperate you are and how much this shop claims to sharpen figure skates 'all the time.' They did such a poor job on my sharpening (which, as a beginner, I unfortunately just chalked up to me struggling with newly sharpened skates rather than a botched job) that months later the sharpener at the new shop I went to (Replay Sports - Rockville) was exasperated; going out of his way to comment on just how bad the previous sharpening was (without me even mentioning my struggles). He ended up having to shave down the whole blade to fix it. Lo-and-behold, I had 0 struggles after this sharpening. To top it off, the Pro Shop charged $24, which was not mentioned prior to them sharpening the skates. I didn't doublecheck the price since a RIA employee had already told me three days earlier it was ~$12. When I mentioned the discrepancy at checkout, they said, 'Well, these are figure skates, not hockey skates.' Huh? For reference, I just have standard Mark IV blades... Despite their shop, I can't in good faith give the RIA arena any less than 4 stars, because overall the rinks are really nice, and I've had excellent experiences with the employees and adult group lessons here. I agree with other reviewers that the weekend sessions are insanely busy and should be avoided, but that's true for really any rink in this area. Yes, their weekday public skate sessions are at inconvenient times (usually 12-2pm, MWF), but as result, these sessions are sometimes virtually empty - so depending on your work schedule, this can be a real benefit.

Kind of pricey for basically 1h of skating. OK rink for introducing toddlers and young kids to ice skating if it's not overly crowded. They had a lot of penguin pushers, so that was nice Make sure you dress up warm! It was a nice atmosphere with X-mas lights up and the fires were nice if you could find space to sit near one. I booked tickets to ice skate on a Friday night about two days in advance. You MUST now reserve your ticket to skate as well as the type of ice skate that you need. For an Adult, it was $10 to enter and $5 for beginner ice skates , total of $15 (no taxes). Reservation times are every 15 minutes and you should arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled time to allow for COVID-19 social distancing practices. You must also wear a mask. By Friday we noticed that it was supposed to rain heavily during our scheduled time. I called the business number at 1030A and left a voicemail inquiring about skating in the rain and refund of tickets. I received a call back around 1230p that day (the business opens at 12p) and was told that the ice skating rink does Not close during raining periods because the ice is frozen. If the rain fall is too heavy for skaters to skate safely then they will stop, but that typically has not occurred. My friend and I decided to not skate due to the rain and I was offered a quick and easy refund. Over the phone, I received a text message confirmation that we cancelled our order and I would be refunded. I got the refund back in a few business days (and over a holiday). The business person was really nice and patient to answer my questions and provide a refund. Hopefully one day I will actually make it to skate at this ice skating rink!
