Skala Bakery is located behind the Grote St Coles, outside the Central Markets exit, halfway down the arcade towards Gouger St. The yellow stall sells a big range of handmade breads for very reasonable prices. There are few good bakers in Adelaide, my favourite is the Mylor Bakery - who make excellent sourdoughs. But I can't afford eight dollars a loaf every week. And even if I could I wouldn't buy it every week just on principle!
Anyway, Skala Bakery strikes a good balance between quality and price. Their bread is certainly better than what you'd buy at Coles or Woolies, but not much more expensive. You can buy a bag of normal pre-sliced bread, but there is a lot more to choose from. First off you've got a whole lot of categories - rye, sourdough, high-fibre, lunch rolls, dinner rolls etc. Then you've got the special stuff - ciabattas, baguettes, or the more unusual caraway rye loaf. Oh, and there is tortillas, flatbreads, wraps. And if you were just after a snack - maybe you don't want the bread lecture - there is a bunch of ready to go pies and pasties. read more
