If the 5m long menu board isn't overwhelming enough for your taste buds make sure you DO NOT LOOK at the food cabinet on the way up to making your order as it will just confuse you more. The first time I went here I was distracted by so many things on the menu that I went for the safe eggs and coriander on rye option. A bit disappointed at the cost versus size of the meal my experience was slightly tainted. But as I sipped on my Ginger Zinger drink that was like star anise and gingery lemon jesus juice in a cup I looked closer at the menu and at what people were eating. It seemed that their big pancake and their roti wraps are the way to go. Upon my return to give this place a second shot I ordered a vegetarian twist on a bacon and egg wrap and, despite a bucket load of sauce and a fair amount of oil, I was impressed. As Laura said though, aside from the Ginger Zinger, the other highlight here is the bowls of coffee they serve. Yes it is a bowl and it is filled with smooth, creamy coffee goodness for you to dip your whole face into. Also don't go past their gluten free desserts here! Their lemon curd cake is delicious.

I visit sleepy Semaphore quite a lot, as the old parent-shaped people live that way, and it was only relatively recently that I stumbled across this haven of Scandinavian delights. And I'm not just talking about the cute mustachioed barista. Complementing the birch tree wall art and Viking paraphernalia (I'm a huge sucker for Viking paraphernalia) is a tasty menu of baked goodies that are fresh, sweet and plentiful - as well as Swedish-inspired specialties like elderflower drinks and traditional waffles. Any country that has a TRADITION of waffles is all right by me. They seem to be undergoing renovations at the moment, but the place is still very cute, with kitschy Swedish accessories, some chandelier action, as well as the aforementioned radical Viking stuff. There always seems to be a queue here which is also a good sign - and, super importantly, the coffee is solid. ALSO: THEY SERVE COFFEE IN A BOWL. A bowl, people. We ordered and were promptly served out crepes and coffee within a matter of minutes and as expected fresh and tasty. I deduct one star from my rating because the cream would have been better served if whipped slightly and my berries were still cold from the freezer. It could only have improved my experience overall if they were fresh even if that meant reducing the quantity or maybe amusing a homemade compote sauce from the berries. The whipped cream is just a personal grievance. Price is well suited to speed, quality, hospitality and environment. Would recommend highly if you're in the area.

It was delicious and not sweet. My friend had poached eggs on toast and it could have benefitted from a bit nicer presentation and also the rye bread looked a bit more like a biscuit than bread. Just a bit plain. But the eggs looked beautifully cooked, with rich yellow yolks. The coffee came with fab coffee art and a friendly smile. We didn't have to wait long for our order either. On the counter there are self serve jugs to fill from adjacent sink and matching funky, rustic cups. And the best part if one over-indulges on cakes, is being able to walk it off along a stunning beach only a few meters away!

The pies here are incredible, and there's what 20+ flavours? Many of which you'll only find in grandma's secret cook books. Some of the one's I've tried: Lamb and mint, Beef and stout, Chicken, Chicken Korma, Cheese Cransky, Chilli Cransky, Vegetarian quiche. I also love how the soft drinks feature more than just a Coke or Pepsi range. Portello, Kola Beer and Creamy Soda are some of my favourites. The pies are so filling, and the chucks of meat within are huge! This place will make the Port Elliot Bakery taste like bin juice in comparison.

The upside is that Crossant D'Or Bakery has now decided to open every Saturday, which is great if you're looking for cheap pastries and coffee ;) My favourite is the almond croissant - full size for only $1!! That is not a typo - it's really $1. We also love the tray of 12 mini croissants (6 almond and 6 chocolate) for only $6, and a bonus is the good coffee (not sure if they stock soy milk - I had a very good long black). Croissant D'Or supplies cafes and the Central Markets, so is not really set up to be a stand-alone cafe - this is why the produce is so cheap, and why the seating is a bit daggy. It's a shame the Rendezvous Markets weren't sustainable, but I think this is because they concentrated more on the produce itself rather than the ambience ... and although this sounds shallow, ambience is a very important in making these sorts of markets popular. All in all, I think we will be frequenting Croissant D'Or quite regularly ... good for my wallet, but not necessarily for my waistline ;)

And probably being sold on for some considerable mark-up. This is one of these hidden jewels of the south, where you can grab a delectably flaky almond pastry and creamy latte for a fraction of what it will cost you at one of your more fancy establishments. It's worth seeking out this place early on a Saturday morning if only to grab a $6 tray chock full of croissant-y goodies; plain, chocolate and almond. And of course, you need to get one to eat then and there as well! The only downfall of this place (besides it's slightly difficult to get to location), is the general atmos. As I mentioned before, this is a working bakery set on an industrial estate. There are seats outside, but they are few and far between. The view is of the surrounding warehouses, with some old cracked cement pots with a few token plants for greenery. The music is also of some questionable taste at time - you'll have a few charming Parisian cafe tunes, but then mysteriously Zamfir will suddenly bust some panpipe moves. You can't help but think that with a little more careful planning, some more care taken with the outside decor and keeping up with the oh-so-French-chic musique that this bakery could become a real trendy hit with the Southerners. However, until then, I will continue to go for the amazing pastries, great coffee and friendly service. It's worth the trip through the sea of industry, for the best croissants in town. Hot dogs filled with ham, turkey, beef, bacon, onion, any condiment you could imagine and as much a cheese as could possibly fit. We did not figure the names of the two women who seemed to run the cafe, so we've dubbed them Patsy and Betty, and we like to believe they think our names are Billy and Todd. They were very friendly and even though we were in our early 20's, they treated us as nicely as one would two five year old boys. My partner had a baguette with was beautiful and fresh, as were the ingredients that were used inside it. Upon leaving we were asked how everything was. There were definitely no complaints. The shop is also situated where the sun isn't going to cause any problems. I mention this because if you've been to the Subway at Gepps Cross Homemaker Centre you'll know what I mean. On a hot day having that sun stream through the window can make for uncomfortable dining. Thankfully that's a non issue here.
