    Portuguese Tart
    Sharna H.

After having breakfast across the road and rummaging in the bargain bins in Chemart just around the corner (seriously go there, good bargains in those bins!), I was procrastinating on what to have for lunch. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm thinking of my next meal as soon as I've finished the final mouthful of my last meal! I eat every few hours to fuel my gym training (and to satisfy my food addiction) so my stomach is like a well trained seal and gets hungry on cue. It was a toss up to try a new Banh Mi place or a piping hot pie. The pie won! This place was warm and inviting and if I had the time I would've dined in but instead opted for takeaway. I ordered a chunky beef & mushroom pie and my mum got the cornish pasty. Also decided on a couple Portuguese custard tarts. The Portuguese tarts weren't anything special. The glaze on top was weird. Not the creme brulee kind but a Danish glaze with a slight citrus hint. My custard was overcooked and filling was only around 3-5mm in height. It was also super sweet. The pie had everything going for it ( almost). I'm finicky with my pastry. It had the perfect combination of flake on the outside and that soft pastry that's absorbed some of the pie liquid on the inside. My pie did fall apart as I bit into it as the pastry was very thin. It had a fantastic meaty tasty flavour but the steak was very lean so ended up like dry hard chunks that didn't melt but stuck to the roof of my mouth. My mum is a Cornish pasty connoisseur and these were her thoughts on the pasty. The ratio of pastry to filling wasn't quite there. She found that the filling was minimal compared to her favourites. Also upon biting in to it you get hit with a strange aroma like off onions in the pantry. That being said the flavour was good but it could've done with more seasoning, in particular that peppery hint you normally find in Cornish pasties. After taking a bite myself I concur with her thoughts. Would I return again? Probably not. If I was in the area and needed a pie fix, then sure. It certainly wasn't an awful experience. I guess it's just hard to beat Red Door or the Willunga bakery.

A slight twist to this fresh bakery as they also make sandwiches, whereas other bakeries mainly do…read morethe usual baked goods only and...they also serve coffee, what a novel idea! And by the way..it's a wicked looking coffee machine! Clean premises with a green colour scheme plus almost all the interior walls are lined with stainless steel, it really is classy for a bakery as opposed to homely. Being located so close to the beach also ensures a nice cool breeze comes through the bakery but I think their air conditioning system is pretty good too. There's a large variety of baked goods and a selection of sale items on the rack. A cold drinks fridge to quench your thirst after a day at the beach or anytime really. From what I heard they were located in Henley Beach for five years and have relocated to West Beach and had their opening some time in November 2011. People are raving about their pasties, sausage rolls, Spiced Indian Coffee and everything else they make and bake. On the back of their business card is a 'Connoisseur' coffee card with the 10th coffee free. I am definitely going back for a closer inspection from the inside of my taste buds!

As far as bakeries go, this one is certainly up there!…read more Serving all the regulars and a few special selections, bakers edge is yet to disappoint and you certainly can't complain about the location - only a very short walk and your feet are on the sand! Certainly do try the nutella donuts - these things are the reason that I will never be bikini ready...but I'd rather nutella over a swim suit any day! The honey logs are delish too - try them...try it all!!! Appropriate for their location, Baker Edge also have a selection of gelato and sorbet, my favourite being the almond and fig...have I sold you yet?!?! Always tidy, with the friendliest of staff and a really cool style, this bakery truly stands out! Get around it, y'all!

I was chatting with Adelaide-based workmates this week about the 2025 South Australian Baking…read moreAward-winning vanilla slice from The Village Baker. When I looked at the website, I saw they also had a passionfruit icing option. I am a fan of passionfruit icing. My dream icing is pink passionfruit icing, but I've only seen homemade vanilla slices with pink passionfruit icing. When I arrived, I saw in the display that the "standard" vanilla slice was the award winner. In my mind, I needed to buy both versions and eat them. Both vanilla slices are superb. The pastry wasn't soggy. The custard was delightfully creamy and smooth with a vanilla flavour without being too sweet. The standard icing is okay. It's a bit thick for me and a bit too sweet. The passionfruit fudge icing, on the other hand, is fantastic. I love anything sweet and tart. Tarty sweetness makes my lips tingle and "sing". The passionfruit fudge is thick, but it doesn't "feel" thick in my mouth, and it's great to crunch the passionfruit seeds between my teeth. I ate the standard vanilla slice first because I wanted to finish with the tartness of the passionfruit fudge icing. I can appreciate why The Village Baker's standard vanilla slice won this year's baking award. I prefer their passionfruit fudge vanilla slice.

A HIDDEN GEM ON SOUTH ROAD…read more WOW! That's all I can really say.. My wife introduced me to this great little bakery a few months ago, and it's now become a weekend regular. Pulling into the little shopping centre in Blackforest, the place doesn't look like much from the outside, but don't let that fool you. This place is a hidden gem. They have a great selection of gourmet pies, pasties and sausage rolls. Beef and Bacon Pie! Amazing.. :) Also there selection of pastries and cakes are brilliant, and after walking in there today to find that they now sell CRONUTS! Sweet! :) This is a working Bakery and it is always packed, they are constantly refilling there pie warmer as they always sell out quick, so no day old footy pies here.. I would highly recommend this place next time your in the neighbourhood. :)
