Portuguese Tart
Sharna H.

After having breakfast across the road and rummaging in the bargain bins in Chemart just around the corner (seriously go there, good bargains in those bins!), I was procrastinating on what to have for lunch. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm thinking of my next meal as soon as I've finished the final mouthful of my last meal! I eat every few hours to fuel my gym training (and to satisfy my food addiction) so my stomach is like a well trained seal and gets hungry on cue. It was a toss up to try a new Banh Mi place or a piping hot pie. The pie won! This place was warm and inviting and if I had the time I would've dined in but instead opted for takeaway. I ordered a chunky beef & mushroom pie and my mum got the cornish pasty. Also decided on a couple Portuguese custard tarts. The Portuguese tarts weren't anything special. The glaze on top was weird. Not the creme brulee kind but a Danish glaze with a slight citrus hint. My custard was overcooked and filling was only around 3-5mm in height. It was also super sweet. The pie had everything going for it ( almost). I'm finicky with my pastry. It had the perfect combination of flake on the outside and that soft pastry that's absorbed some of the pie liquid on the inside. My pie did fall apart as I bit into it as the pastry was very thin. It had a fantastic meaty tasty flavour but the steak was very lean so ended up like dry hard chunks that didn't melt but stuck to the roof of my mouth. My mum is a Cornish pasty connoisseur and these were her thoughts on the pasty. The ratio of pastry to filling wasn't quite there. She found that the filling was minimal compared to her favourites. Also upon biting in to it you get hit with a strange aroma like off onions in the pantry. That being said the flavour was good but it could've done with more seasoning, in particular that peppery hint you normally find in Cornish pasties. After taking a bite myself I concur with her thoughts. Would I return again? Probably not. If I was in the area and needed a pie fix, then sure. It certainly wasn't an awful experience. I guess it's just hard to beat Red Door or the Willunga bakery.

Estia Henley Beach - *Second* Best Greek Food of My Life. (After Greece!) Period…read more Went here for my birthday and honestly... I'm still thinking about it. Estia is hands-down the fanciest and most authentic Greek restaurant I've ever been to. From the moment we walked in, it felt like a getaway to the Mediterranean -- ocean views, warm lighting, and that relaxed Greek island vibe. We ordered the saganaki, chargrilled octopus, kleftiko lamb, and spanakopita -- every single dish was perfection. Like, flavour explosion, melt-in-your-mouth, zero-faults kind of good. The loukoumades and baklava for dessert? Unreal. Sweet, crispy, soft -- 10/10. Service was next-level. Super friendly staff, quick service even though it was packed, and they surprised me with a free dessert for my birthday! The staff made me feel like family. Not cheap, but totally worth it. The food, the setting, the whole atmosphere -- it's a special place. I'll be coming back for every celebration... or just when I miss Greece. Pro tip: Book ahead and try to go at sunset. The view over Henley Beach is unreal.

We were seated immediately and treated like we were long time customers. The food was great. We had shareables for two of us. Dip with pita, spanakopita, and grilled cheese with olive oil and lemon. The only thing better than the food was the service and the view of the ocean from an outdoor table was wonderful. We loved it so much we made reservations for next week to try the calamari that we saw passing through. Can't wait.

This restaurant is in a bit of a cheeky spot on Henley Beach Road and it's not easy to locate. Make…read morea bit of an effort to find it though because it's definitely worth the puff. Lovely intimate little place with open frontage and sea breeze, pretty bar and even prettier staff. The food was the best I've had in ages, and really good value. For $20 we got a marinara piled with fresh seafood, and my stuffed eggplant was delicious but so filling I did that 'so sorry I can't finish it really was delicious' apologising thing small serve eaters like myself have to do. It's a curse, it really is. The owner was lovely and attentive, checking in with all of his patrons regularly to make sure we were having a nice time. And we were! They had a great wine list and for a boozer like myself, this is paramount. There was a weird white sheet covering one wall and my mind was racing with possibilities of what it could be hiding: turns out they're renovating and extending the dining room. More Cucina Nuova I say! Piu Piu!

So after gazing out over the sea and then dancing at a wine bar in the afternoon with friends I decided to grab a dinner from Cucina Nuova before heading home. It's not on the waterfront, rather on Henley Beach Road but a quick and easy walk. Like many Italian style restaurant/cafes in Adelaide the menu is familiar sounding. Cucina Nuovo has familiar dishes, reasonable prices, and lovely staff. The food is nothing revolutionary but it's yummy and service is lovely. My waitress was a real gem. The only real bone I have to pick (the lack of originality is only a minor point) is that one of the menu items was listed as gluten free, as a coeliac I ordered the meal but asked my lovely hostess to specify to the chef that I really needed everything to be GF. I was then told that one of the sides which comes on the plate with this main (the pollo royale) actually contained wheat. It was an easy enough swap to rice and I was so glad they picked up on it but I don't ever recommend that an institution advertises a GF meal that actually isn't gluten-free. It's a warning to always double check for the consumer as well. After that issue the meal was prepared and I haven't been sick at all so they were very careful. The chicken was tasty and free-range but I would loved a teensy-little bit more moisture, the sauce was very nice (cream-based), the side salad fresh. I seasoned my meal with chilli oil which was lovely and it was nice to be able to add my own, personal level of heat to the dish. I can imagine coming to the beach with a bunch of friends, throwing on a cute summer dress after swimming, and settling down to some (gluten free!) pizzas and white wine.

Anyway, I've never been here on my own. I only feel comfortable enough to be there when I'm with my friend who is a Cibo regular (yes, he's a cyclist). I'm not sure what it is exactly. I don't find the red branding relaxing. I don't like the way everyone looks at you when you walk near the place. I don't like the way the people inside look across their newspapers with supercilious stares when my dog walks in accidentally......sometimes there is a long wait......and I don't drink coffee... Now for the positives.....what a great location! And dog friendly! That's probably enough actually. I regularly meet a friend on the beach who walks his dog too and we have a drink and some social time, then walk back. Sitting outside is great for the dogs and it is dog city early morning. Even beating the cyclists most of the time. That's one of the other benefits - it opens at 7am, which is great for the early morning walks. They have T2 tea, which I love, but they don't always get it right. Camomile drifting through the tea strainer/canister thingee to make a very textured drink....Chai lattes very milky and not enough chai.... One tip that a friendly staff member gave me, is that although tea only comes in one cup size, if I order it in a take-away cup, it's larger for the same price. The day she offered that i was so desperate for a big, hot cup of tea that I almost clapped with glee. Then I was too full to drink it all - that will teach me to be greedy. Another tip is to bring a jacket for sitting outside. It's the biggest wind tunnel IN THE WORLD (add in Jeremy Clarkson voice there) and there has been more than one occasion when my friend's Cappucino froth has joined the beach flotsam and jetsam in a gust of anarchy. There's free water accessible easily on the counter...and no doubt I'll be back!

This one pretty much smack bang on the beach of Henley, right next to the Square, had lovely outdoor seating and views of the ocean. There is parking real nearby, a lovely summer atmosphere and the food and coffee ain't disappointing. The staff are friendly, which they should be considering the location of their workplace. And the coffee is of the same standard at other Cibo's as well as the tasty brunch items and cakes. A good meeting place in a nicer beach than Glenelg etc.

And by the way..it's a wicked looking coffee machine! Clean premises with a green colour scheme plus almost all the interior walls are lined with stainless steel, it really is classy for a bakery as opposed to homely. Being located so close to the beach also ensures a nice cool breeze comes through the bakery but I think their air conditioning system is pretty good too. There's a large variety of baked goods and a selection of sale items on the rack. A cold drinks fridge to quench your thirst after a day at the beach or anytime really. From what I heard they were located in Henley Beach for five years and have relocated to West Beach and had their opening some time in November 2011. People are raving about their pasties, sausage rolls, Spiced Indian Coffee and everything else they make and bake. On the back of their business card is a 'Connoisseur' coffee card with the 10th coffee free. I am definitely going back for a closer inspection from the inside of my taste buds!

The honey logs are delish too - try them...try it all!!! Appropriate for their location, Baker Edge also have a selection of gelato and sorbet, my favourite being the almond and fig...have I sold you yet?!?!
