From the very first day of working with him to plan and organize our trip of a lifetime, we felt we were in great hands. Phil's fantastic first-hand knowledge of the camps allowed him to create a trip that far surpassed the typical group package deals. Phil meticulously plans every detail of the trip, from the best places to stay to recover from jet lag before the safari, to every transfer. You are never left wondering where to go or if someone will be there to meet you. The camps he chooses are small and personal, where you are taken care of and treated like family. The safari experience is second to none, with personal drivers and guides who are excellent, highly skilled, and knowledgeable. If you want a safari experience to remember, I can't recommend Phil and On Safari-In enough!

We didn't know anything about going on safari, and Phil build a custom trip that catered to exactly our personal travel style of going to some of the more off-the-beaten-path places with fewer tourists, but still lots of amazing experiences (we watched a family of elephants chase off a pair of male lions!). Everyone we met was on their 4th or 10th safari and when they found out we'd never been before, they'd always ask, "So how did you even find this place?" Also I had no idea you could have a vacation with this much adventure and yet zero stress. Having Phil take care of everything and getting it all arranged for and paid in advance took a HUGE load off of us, which was so great as we both have jobs where we typically do a lot of planning and project management. By taking care of that, Phil let us go on an exciting vacation where we actually got to RELAX. We took literally THOUSANDS of amazing photos, but here are just a couple fun ones I shot with my phone.

The USS Nebraska's keel was laid down in May 26, 1987 ; it was launched on August 15, 1992 and commissioned on July 10, 1993. The sub is home to 1 of two crews for a typical deterrent mission under the MAD strategy for an average of 77 days. Each crew consists of ~17 officers, ~15 petty officers and ~122 enlisted men. The USS Nebraska has completed 18 deterrent missions as of September of 2010. This is the second Navy Ship to honor the State of Nebraska. Duty rotation for the crew is 18 hours with 6 hours at the primary duty station, ~6 hours of other duties. However, officers, however, typically are on for 14 hours or longer. This is the routine for the entire tour of duty. Aside from 24 Trident Ballistic missiles complete with MIRVs (Multiple Independent Reentry Vehicles), the sub features 4 forward torpedo tubes. 4 of the 18 Ohio class submarines are designed SSGNs and are equipped with cruise missiles instead of Trident Missiles. The tour allowed us to see the silos and torpedo bay including the control rooms for each. We also the Mess, the Ward room, the Petty Officers room, the berths of various personal and the bathrooms. The Control center and sonar rooms as well as misc machine rooms were part of the tour. The only areas pretty much off-limits to the friends and families touring the Nebraska was the engine room, nuclear reactor room and sail. We were treated to lunch which was 2 star food with 5 star service. During deployment, the kitchen is active 24/7 and the lunch we were served seemed to reflect what was served on board Kudos to the men (and soon woman) who go on watch on this sub. But this is a…read moresurprisingly neat and free visitor attraction, even if you don't manage to book one of the official tours. We passed through on Highway 20 and our curiosity was piqued. Newhalem is a tiny little Pleasantville of a company town, with rows of employee housing surrounding the main visitor area. There's a rest stop area with ample parking, a general store and deli with outdoor restrooms, a decommissioned supply train, a suspension bridge leading to a trail that takes you to the old powerhouse, picnic tables, and the new powerhouse and gardens. That's a lot! The restrooms are basic, but clean and well supplied. The general store is nicer than a typical convenience store, with fancy snacks and pretty decent prices. They have wine and Juanita's tortilla chips! They serve a minimal amount of hot food (pizza, popcorn) that didn't look very appetizing. The tour office seems to be closed (or yet to open?). It looked unfinished when we peeked in the windows, with cartons of "2015-16 Visitor Brochures" and half-built displays inside. Maybe that will open later this year. We didn't see any info about booking official tours anywhere. The historic train once conveyed supplies to the powerhouse, and the bell still works, so you should definitely yank on it and ring it. The suspension bridge is very narrow and wobbly, but it has a lovely view of the river, even if you don't follow the one-mile trail to the old powerhouse. A short distance away from the rest stop is the new powerhouse, which has a separate but small parking lot for guests. There is a small visitor center that you can go into and look down on the power plant, plus a historical display with some artifacts from the powerhouse's past that are interesting. It only takes a few minutes to go through here. You can't tell from the road, but there's also a steep set of stairs leading to a series of gardens, artificial pools and waterfalls! It sounds like they light them up at night, so that might be worth stopping for if you happen to be passing through after dark. The stairs are quite steep, muddy in places, and not recommended for anyone with mobility issues. But the waterfall is very pretty and you can get a good view from the first, lower bridge without having to climb up the entire stairway. Everything is free and open to the public, and it's more interesting than I would have guessed! Recommended if you like clean restrooms, getting out to stretch your legs, waterfalls, snacks, trains, or hiking. Which is pretty much everyone.

Kolby is an articulate, engaging weaver of tales, and her vintage costume added to the ambiance. She was armed with old photos of the buildings we discussed in our 1.5, one-ish mile tour. The photos were fascinating, because many of the buildings no longer exist, and the rest of them have been altered in the meantime. This was my second tour with Kolby, the first being a virtual tour of the Bayview Cemetery during Covid. My goal is to join all the tours at some point. The cost is well worth the value given, and it's a great thing to do when guests visit. Birthday present, anyone?

But still, co-owner and guide Wren Urbigkit felt compelled to tell us that cursing and cleavage are key components of the tours. Because some people have missed that memo. Those who see Bellingham as a politically-correct college town may experience strong reactions when they hear how the town came to be. Without sharing too many of the tour's secrets, here are a few insights: Working girls were seen as a necessary evil by some wives, to keep bearded, flannel-sporting young men away from their daughters. And their bosses, madams, were seen by colleagues of many male entrepreneurs. And for those who think Bellingham is experiencing crazy growth now, wait until you hear about the late 1800s! The tour wraps up with adult beverages at Stones Throw Brewery, which has a parking spot dedicated to one of the afore-mentioned madams, Miss Annie.

Our guides, Teo and Nick, were fantastic--clearly experienced, highly professional, and excellent at balancing safety with a great sense of adventure. They gave clear instructions, made everyone feel comfortable on the water, and brought a relaxed, friendly energy to the trip that helped calm any first-time nerves. And then there's Jesse Bean, the company's resident water rescue dog. While we didn't need rescuing (thanks to our skilled guides), knowing Jesse was on standby, complete with her own life vest added a charming and unexpected highlight to the day. Every rafting company should have a dog like Jesse Bean. The Skagit River is breathtaking: cold, clean glacial water, surrounded by dense Northwest greenery and mountain views. The mix of calm stretches and exciting rapids made it ideal for beginners like us, but I imagine experienced rafters would enjoy it just as much! All in all, Cascadia Rafting offers an extremely well-run and memorable experience. Whether you're new to rafting or a seasoned paddler, I highly recommend this team. Thanks again to Teo, Nick, and, of course, Jesse Bean for an unforgettable day on the river!

There's a total of 6 zip lines. They start at shorter and easier and increase in difficulty. I wouldn't say it's a very extreme zip line, there were plenty of young children doing it as well. Fun fact: the longest zip line is slightly longer than the Space Needle in length! There were about 8 people on the tour with my husband and I (not including guides). I think the only con is having to wait for everyone at every canopy which is understandable for a safety point of view but can take some time and I'm a bit impatient. But you're quite high up so I took the time to enjoy the views, peace and quiet of being in the forest! Also, a good opportunity to strike up some conversation with everyone else. The staff helped us get into our gear, get in and out of every zip line and gave us a velocity push when we wanted extra speed very kindly. Halfway through the tour, you even get freshly made lavender lemonade which was delicious. I would try to book this in advance if you're trying to go on a weekend.
