Oh my, I'm two hours from home, and my tires are low! I searched for fuel stations, and this was the nearest. I drove here, and the place was closed. (What was I doing awake before 6 am anyway?) I didn't see the air hose here, so I went across the road to the Shell station and pulled up in front of their air machine. 25 cents. No coins in pockets. I went inside to ask for change. "Sorry, my air machine is broken. But theirs works -- and it's free." She described where, next to the ice freezers. I thanked her and returned here. I remembered that I had left my air caps off, returned for them, and came back here. Yes, the air hose was there, just to the right of the ice freezers. And yes, it's free. And yes, it even works when the shop is closed. And yes, I even remembered to replace my air caps this time. (Pause writing to actually replace them.) Air pressure restored! From the outside, the place looks like a useful little store. The cute wooden sign reads, "Chom's groceries hardware supplies". The big sign reads, "Chevron". The hours on the door read, "Chom's 7 am to 6 pm-ish". There's a great big pale green propane tank with a refill machine. Maybe I'll be back for more than just air. But free air when you need it, even when the place is closed? That's a five-star "Woohoo! Best ever!"

When you came storming out of that silly cave yelling at us - with your saggy boobs swaying in the non-existent breeze - there was a reason we gave you the one finger salute. You're a very old lady who doesn't like us "street racers" or whatever-it-was-you-thought-we-were taking up spots for all the other tourists. Even if our cars are way more attractive than any Winnebago that passes through this gorgeous stretch of highway. Take it from me and about a hundred other car enthusiasts: send your money a few hundred feet south to the Chevron station where the owners were more than willing to give such a large group a discount and not bitch at us for (oh my god!) pumping gas.

If you need to use the phone, they have a pay phone outside, which is good because there is no cell service on the highway. I love the seating area with the loveseat next to the firewood. It smells amazing, and is just so cozy! We went into the store part, which is so lovely -- beautiful wood throughout and so spacious. They had everything one could possibly need for camping, including firewood. They also had a decent selection of drinks and snacks. I know as they get further into running mode, they'll get more, and I cannot wait! But, more than anything else, I was impressed by the owners, as they were warm, friendly and super welcoming. Pardners had their generator up and running first so everybody was there getting ice, gas and necessities. Little did we know the grocery store would open or we never would have shopped here. The prices are absolutely outrageous and I know the little power hungry guy at the register was chuckling inside the whole time. He was rude to every customer in the store, wouldn't answer questions, said no a lot and was just generally horrible. Being visitors, we were in a bit of a panic, not quite knowing what to do. We had driven 8 hours to get that far and the thought of turning around didn't sit well with all of our tired bodies so we figured we'd get some food and hunker down for the night. Sandwiches would suit us just fine... hey, no bread... frozen sandwich rolls would be great once they thawed. (Remember, the entire valley is without power for an estimated two weeks at this point.) Power Boy refused to sell us the rolls stating they needed them for the steamed hot dogs. PERFECT! We'll take 8 of those steamed hot dogs then... no can do, generator doesn't operate the steamer... then we'll just take the rolls... no can do, they're mine and you can't have them! I was absolutely appalled at his attitude during the crisis of HIS town. He didn't want to help in the least, just wanted to ring up those sales. We walked out wondering what to do, what to do, what to eat (not what to drink, he sold us plenty of cold beer) only to discover the grocery store had opened! Wish we could have taken all our purchases back to Pardners... We visit Winthrop a couple times a year and have never shopped at Pardners and needless to say, we will never shop there again. Heck, it's a Texaco... may not ever use Texaco again... careful big corporations, these little town hicks wearing your logo and representing your company can give you a bad reputation. Note: I typically don't rant or rate low because of one employee or interaction and this one is no different. Every worker in there (3 men) was rude, disrespectful and "angry" with the customers. Maybe some training on disaster preparedness is in order...

It's usually on the average 4 to 5 cents (3.62 plus unleaded) more than in Wenatchee. The Food mart is stocked nicely. They have my favorite gatorade here, not like across the street were they only carry it as a fountain drink (yuk), or second choice powerade. The help is always rude for some reason. I really don't know why. I've been here a lot of times, and it's always the same. The guys across the street are waaaay too friendly. :: shrugging shoulders:: I don't get it. But I do always see a "help wanted" sign, and they sure need some help in that department.
