Popcorn Cod
Celina T.

We stopped by for a snack after farmers market and is dog friendly as long as you sit outdoors. The hop water was delicious; how generous of them to provide a glass for this. And my popcorn cod is becoming a new fav appetizer. I loved how well they fried it. My dog seems to be a fan as well. Service was quick, we had to order inside. No line though.

Back here again after 8 months to meet friends before a comedy show. Just missed the HH by one minute which ended at 5:30 but signs in different areas said HH ended at 6. We did not get the HH prices. The skewers are tasty but still pricey for the portion in my opinion. They do have a decent selection of beers and mead. Staff always friendly. Prices are 3.5 but staff and taste of food 4 stars.

Such a fun experience here! We were visiting from Portland and saw this in a reel and decided to check it out! The decorations are perfectly Nordic while still being modern and tasteful. We went later in the evening so it wasn't as lively but I'm sure it would have a really fun vibe filled with people. The servers were nice but maybe not the most attentive. Again, end of the night, I can understand them being tired. Now the most important part, the food, was amazing! I believe there was one guy cooking all by himself and he did a fantastic job! We got the popcorn cod as a starter which was so fun and inventive. Think crispy fried chicken bites but with fish. So yummy! For our mains, we shared a grilled skewer of pork belly with applesauce, a skewer of grilled shrimp, and a life changing grilled cheese made with goat cheese and lingonberry jam! The flavors complimented each other so well and it was just melt in your mouth perfection! I want another just writing this. We also got a flight of their meads which was lovely! The next time we come up to Seattle, we definitely want to coincide with one of their events! We just missed the cheese and pickle pairing class which would've been fun. Overall, such a unique space and restaurant idea. I wish more places were this creative. Definitely come here with a group so you can do family style. So many yummy bites to try. As for us, we were eyeing their huge pretzel with beer cheese. That'll be on our next trip.

This was the mead flight. So fun! Our first time getting mead. Very good!

This was quite the random experience for us. Our plans changed at the last minute and we jumped on Yelp to see what kind of food was around. Nordic food? Never tried. Mead? Never tried. A whole smoked sardine!? Never tried! I'm in! We got the mead flight since it's a beverage my husband and I had yet to experience. This was really fun. The 2.5oz pours were perfect for us since we had to drive home later. Each was unique in its own way and all were good. Definitely recommend trying that. We got the Jarls platter so we could sample a little bit of everything. I recommend this! Honestly everything was delicious! The smoked sardine (which was the one thing I REALLY wanted to try) was probably my least favorite *cries*. But it was still fun to try! The beat pickled eggs were okay. There wasn't much flavor there to be honest, so I wouldn't get these again. We definitely had fun. I love trying new foods and this was it.

This was a fun experience exploring the Nordic food and beer scene. My favorite was the meat ball Good spot to hang out with a group of friends. I liked the experience more than the food/flavour

Aass - Norwegian pilsner

Skal Beer Hall is such a cool and memorable Nordic/viking themed beer hall. I was trying to pass time before dinner, and no better way to do that than to get a drink at the coolest bar in Ballard! I love the Nordic decor all around. It was very clean inside (including the bathrooms), and the atmosphere is casual. The service was ok. There was plenty of seating, and they have a patio as well. I visited on a Saturday afternoon, and it was not busy. I was able to easily find a seat at the bar. There was a decent selection of Nordic and local alcohol. I ordered the Aass, the Norwegian pilsner. It was light, crisp, refreshing, and exactly what I was looking for. I wish I had room for the food because the pictures looked good. Just means I'll have to return and try the food next time!

This place is a Scandinavian dream. From the moment you walk in, the vibe is cozy, minimalist, and effortlessly warm--like stepping into a stylish Nordic dining room on a winter evening. The food is the real star. Everything tastes incredibly fresh and thoughtfully prepared, with simple ingredients elevated by technique and balance. The fish dishes are outstanding (perfectly cooked, never overdone), and the pretzels are dangerously good. You can tell a lot of care goes into honoring traditional flavors while still keeping things approachable. Service was friendly, knowledgeable, and unpretentious--happy to explain dishes without making you feel lost. Bonus points for a well-curated drink menu that pairs beautifully with the food. If you're looking for something a little different from the usual dining options, this spot is absolutely worth it. Cozy, delicious, and memorable--I'll definitely be back.

Cool first stop in Seattle! Visiting a close friend and we swung by Skål for a drink before dinner. I'm not familiar with Nordic culture but really enjoyed the extensive theming. We placed our orders at the bar counter and received everything within 20~ mins. The pretzel took the longest. GOAT CHEESE SKEWER: Don't sleep on this!!! Loved the chewy, flavorful cheese + tangy applesauce dip combo. VENISON SKEWER: Surprisingly not gamey at all. Super tender and savory, especially with the mustard (?) sauce. I actually liked mixing this with the applesauce too... PRETZEL: The biggest, fluffiest pretzel ever. Had a slight buttery flavor. Soft as a pillow. Great on its own or with the dipping sauces. More than enough for our group of 4. We split a couple meads which were delicious! I had no idea how diverse mead could be. I'd love to come back and try more :)

Skewers: venisin, salmon, pork belly

We loved everything we had from the beer to the food. I enjoyed my Cloudburst Simply Irresistible hazy IPA and hubby liked his Hellbent Brewing Kirby Krackle cryo-hopped IPA. We ordered the skewers with pork belly, salmon, and venison and couldn't decide which was our favorite. The chicken wings were delicious but the surprise highlight was the side of dill pickled carrots. We shared a cup of the potato soup which was thick and cheesy and almost the consistency of a dip. The warm rye bread on the side was perfect for dipping. A glass of mead was a perfect sweet ending. Service was friendly & attentive at the bar top.

First time checking this place out. The Viking themed ambiance is great. You order drinks and food at the back bar. Beer options are solid and they have a decent happy hour. I ordered the large pretzel which was probably overkill for two people. Burger and fries were average, but appreciated both items being on their HH menu. Service was friendly and prompt though they weren't super busy when we arrived about 5:30. 3.5 stars for food, 4.5 for service and ambiance.

The Jarl's Platter

We really liked this place. We will 100% be back to try more of the menu. It was such a treat to stumble upon this place after an exhausting evening of trying on a bunch of wedding dresses at nearby A&Bé Bridal. Loved the vibe of this restaurant and how it's pretty close to everything in downtown Ballard. It was more the exotic (to us) food options that we wouldn't normally cook or come across that really enticed our senses. The service was also quick and efficient, not super friendly but that's normal in Seattle. I liked the Viking-themed decor throughout, including a wall with a Celtic Tree of Life, "Viking?" weapons on the walls, and wood accents throughout the seating. The place is long, so there's a back area with bar seating and a fireplace to make it more cozy. Overall, I loved that they stayed pretty "authentic" (at least to me, since I'm not too familiar with Viking culture outside of what I hear in pop culture/media) to the Viking culture. We got lucky enough to try the HH menu this time, but ordering the Jarl's Platter covered most of the Skewers, so it's a good way to try a good chunk of the menu off the bat. You've gotta try the Norse Pølse, omg it was so good, we ordered a few because one just wasn't enough. We'll be back to try the Viking Cowboy burger, the Forager's Plate, and some of those mead cocktails!

Everything was fine until an employee came up behind us, reached over our shoulders, took my partner's still half-full drink, and threw it away. Didn't say anything. Didn't explain why. We were so stunned in the moment, we didn't think to argue. Even the other patrons sitting next to us also looked really startled. It was only when the initial surprise wore off that one of them spoke up and said, "I think it's because your drink can't be in the can. It has to be in a glass cup." Now, I wasn't with my partner when they ordered their drink at the front counter (I don't really drink much, and I was in the bathroom at the time), so whether the situation was: A) my partner paid at the counter and took the drink (still in the can), thinking everything was a done deal or B) the employee at the front forgot to pour the drink in the apparently required glass cup before giving it to my partner ~ I have no idea ~ Whichever scenario it was, what I DON'T understand is why the employee who took the drink couldn't have explained the situation to us and offered a glass cup in the moment? Or why an employee didn't stop my partner from walking away with the drink at the very beginning when he purchased it so that it could be poured in the requisite cup? Bare minimum: why was the apparent rule not explained at any point? I tried looking for signs in the patio area that stated the rule after the fact, but I could not see any. Maybe I'm blind?? Maybe this is a Seattle thing? But if it's a Seattle thing, why did the people sitting next to us (who seemed like locals) also seem surprised by the behavior? Even if at least some of them were maybe aware of the rule, at the very least they seemed just as startled as we were to witness an employee take away a customer's ~already paid for drink~ no explanation. Disclaimer: this was back in late February-early March of 2026, so if they have since added such signs - great, perfect, love it - but I only just got around to writing this review now. 7 months later. Because I suddenly remembered and felt the need to warn others who plan on going here (especially if you're from out-of-town and they haven't added signs): make sure your drink is in a glass cup or else someone might come up behind you and throw it away.

Their daily 3-5 happy hour makes it particularly fun to watch college football on Saturdays or NFL on Sundays. They have a dark and cozy interior with a lovely shaded patio on hot days. We typically order the same thing each happy hour - I love the fried chicken sliders (Nashville hot) and my husband gets the fried chicken basket. We always pair that with a vieux carre. Total tab is under $35 not including tax and tip. A complete steal in Seattle these days! Service is usually quick and thoughtfully-spaced with enough time to make a dent in the drinks before the food arrives. It's the perfect spot to meet up with friends, host parents, and watch sports of any kind (the mariners game is always on).

I went on a Friday for happy hour, which runs daily from 3-5pm. It is generally very challenging to make this timeframe but I had some time today to stop by right before 5pm. The happy hour deals are great - it is no surprise the restaurant is fairly busy, but at least there are plenty of seats and you seat yourself wherever you want. I got the 3pc chicken tenders and fries ($10) and a vieux carre ($7). I also got the 2pc buckeyes for dessert ($2) because it was only $2 - why not end on a solid dessert at minimal extra cost. The chicken tenders are nicely battered, flavorful, and so juicy. But I got Nashville hot and it was barely any spicy if at all! The fries were also pretty good, just a tad bit too salty but good to wash with a drink or water. The vieux carre was good - decent quality, a bit tiny, but that is how they can keep the costs so low. The buckeyes is basically cold chocolate and peanut butter but very satisfying way to end the meal and is quite sweet and pairs well with the cocktail. Service is generally good as the server was friendly and got me waters, menu, drink, and bill quickly, and made sure I was taken care of. However, there were times where the server asked me questions ensuring I got what I needed (plus points on that) but also the party next to me got asked what dipping sauces for the 3pc chicken tenders and fries and the server did not ask me that. I would have loved something not ketchup because I don't like ketchup so I ended up eating the dish without any dipping sauce, but at least the chicken tenders and fries were delicious enough that I still enjoyed it without any dipping sauce. I am aware dipping sauces are $0.75 extra but would've been a nice gesture to be offered the choice should I decide to get some to enhance the meal. To an extent, you get what you pay for, and the prices are so good especially in this economy that I must go back to try the other happy hour items when the timing works out!
