    We rented a car on-line from Europcar two months ahead of our trip. The return email said to pick…read moreup the car in the Gare (train stn) LeHavre Meet and Greet. A later email showed a map with the pickup point in the train station and again, stated it was the Gare Meet and Greet. Two weeks before our trip, I wrote to their customer service people using the Europcar web site to confirm the pickup location, but they never responded. When we arrived in France, the day before pickup, we called the English speaking Europcar number and they said to pickkup the car at the train station. There was NO Europcar office in the train station! We don't speak French so suddenly the stress level went way up. We called the office, but the agent did not speak English and hung up on me. After twenty minutes, an English speaker helped us get the address, and we took a taxi. There was only one agent in the office so it took about twenty minutes to pick up the car. As we did the walk-around the agent found a tiny (4mm, no exageration) scratch on the rear bumper and photographed it. That said to me that Europcar would be very picky when the car was returned. Then, the agent also pointed out the electronic back tailgate did not work, but she had NOT recorded that in the contract. That was a big concern for me. I asked for it to be documented, but she indicated she did not understand and went on to take care of another customer. Finally, an English speaking customer told her what I wanted and after a bit, she scribbled a hand-written note, undated, and gave it to me, but she did not make a note of it in the contract. That was a risk to me also, but we needed to get on the road. Before we left, I asked about paying highway tolls, she said "Google it." and went to do something else. We returned the car a day early and have written to Europcar about getting a partial refund. Of course, there has been no response. Next time we in Europe, we will NOT use Europcar.

Mind you, I had already paid for the vehicle in full online. The agent told me that he couldn't guarantee my car wouldn't be given to someone else. That was my first turn off. We arrive at the Avis office in Caen an hour and ten minutes past original pick up time. Luckily, they hadn't rented our car out. However, we received the worst customer service we had on our trip to France. The woman at the counter actually asked me if I knew how to drive because I asked her a question about the vehicle. She threw my contract at me when my opinion was different about what I had signed up for. She charged my account for something and then credited again, she couldn't remeber why. It also took her three unsuccessful attempts to print the contract. She spoke very poor English, which is surprising seeing as though most visitors to this area are there for the D-Day sites from English speaking countries. I could live with the poor English as I realize I am in her country, however her attitude was so horrible towards customers that I am shocked she works in customer service. She also rented us a broken wifi adapter for the vehicle. When it was time to go to the car, she pointed and said "it's out back, you'll find it"... When I asked her what make and model it was ( it was different than the one I reserved) she rolled her eyes and told me "it's in your contract!" Which she couldn't print and had to later email to me..We literally went behind the building and pressed the unlock button until we found our vehicle. You No guidance, nobody walked us through using the vehicle. Worst of all, our reservation ran until 1:05PM which took five minutes from her lunch break (they close from 1-2pm) so she literally slammed the door when we left and locked it. I met a couple in Bayeux who had a very similar experience as I did at the same office when renting their vehicle. This morning, I wake up to find a $168 miscellaneous charge on my card from Avis... The experience that just won't quit...

    I hired a car with Enterprise / Alamo through Opodo for a long weekend. The staff were really…read morefriendly and reassuring as I'd had some terrible experiences hiring cars from other rental companies in the past. I was particularly nervous when they showed me the brand new car that only had 4km on the clock. Sign out was easy (*see below) and then as the car was new, I had to fuel up on the way out of town. 20 minutes later, the car lost power and steam was coming out from under the bonnet. This was a brand new car, so definitely not the fault of Enterprise / Alamo but they couldn't have been more helpful in sorting the problem out, first sending their own mechanic and then bringing a replacement car. They have subsequently refunded the cost of the fuel in the first car and we've come to an agreement about the lost time spent at the side of the road. I will definitely defualt to Enterprise / Alamo when I hire again in the future and highly recommend them to you. I'm very grateful to the Caen office for being efficient and completely straight-up with the process of sorting out the probem. My view of a business has always been that it doesn't matter if things go wrong; it's how they sort it out that really matters and this is what Caen Enterprise / Alamo did very well. * As a general suggestion, unrelated to this hire, I've spoken to friends who hire regularly and they recommend doing your research only on comparison sites to find the best hire prices, but then booking directly with the hire company. This simplifies the whole insurance process.

At first we did not want to pay for a day we were not going to use it, so we walked away to have lunch. At lunch we discussed it and decided to go ahead and rent it so we could drive ourselves to the D-Day beaches. We were walking towards Enterprise and were passing Hertz. Hertz was charging double what Enterprise was charging for only one day and wanted extra for Navigation. We walked back to Enterprise and rented the car till Monday with an added fee so that we could drop it off in another city-Bordeaux. That would save us on the train fee to get to that city. The staff were very friendly and even advised us to purchase extra kilometers so that we would not get charged overage fees for using more kilometers than are given per day with the rental. (You get 250 km per day) We highly recommend this establishment over the others-Sofie and Yael are very friendly!
